The bolt action rifle should be chambered in a round that can be used on medium to larger game. Thus no 5.56's. .308 Win is perfect all around.
@royjohnson465
@royjohnson465 9 месяцев назад
@@MadFox-jr6by ~Exactly correct!! My friend got a new bolt-action Mossberg MVP in 5.56 in the bush for a survival type weapon. That is a very dumb move because a person wants a caliber that is good for hunting medium Deer sized game. Either a rifle in bolt-action ‘or’ lever-action 7.62x39, 44 Rem Mag, 30-30, 6.5 Creedmore, 243, 260, 7mm-08, or 308 is a minimum for hunting medium Deer sized game and larger. Especially when we also have Moose, Elk, and Black Bear here.

You mentioned something you just can't overemphasize. Casual shooters need to know that training doesn't just mean taking a course. It means practicing frequently. I had extensive training and over 50 years of shooting experience. When I was forced into retirement by a heart attack last year, I just could not shoot for well over a year. The first time I got back out to the range, I couldn't even hit the target. I didn't even realize for a while that I had slipped into using a grip, stance and shooting techniques I haven't used since the 1970s. My breathing was wrong, and I couldn't stay on the target. All my old instructors and buddies were right - shooting is truly a perishable skill. Another important point is having a few .22s to teach your kids. I was glad you included that. All of my kids learned on .22s.
@JD-tn5lz

Firearms have been part of my professions since I was 17years old. I'm in my 50's now, and I still live train three of four times a week...and 75% of what I shoot is .22LR. It gets the reps in and frankly, fundamentals are fundamentals whether you shoot .50AE or .22LR.

I love your message at the end about being a positive change. The last damn thing we need is the gun community leading the charge in to crazy town (like many have been for the last several years). SHTF preparation should be something we aspire to do, but never use. Not something we do, then aspire to find an excuse to use. We need to be the reasonable people in the room, not the assholes agitating conflict over every single culture war nonsense issue, then screaming about our guns whenever someone disagrees with us on something or something doesn't go our way.

SHTF preparation comes in real handy when a tree falls on your house, or you lose your job, or you have a major medical issue, or a hurricane floods your property and your house is condemned. Assuming of course that one's SHTF preps didn't start and end with an unhelpful number of AR15s and ammo and armor.

That's really good, man. You don't need to necessarily disassemble/assemble super often with your firearms if you're doing a breakdown/cleaning properly, but it's great to build familiarity. Idk what kind of firearms you have, and no one needs to know, but I hope you're not stressing the budget if you have higher priced calibers. If you want to work on marksmanship, I would suggest higher volume at the range with a .22. With a high quality rifle, you can fire any .22 ammo without problems. I personally have an hk416 and it has Always shot sweet. First 500 rounds were total budget bullets and not a single one misfires, whereas with my ruger .22 LR pistol, I would misfire on 4 of 10 rounds with the same ammunition
@clintkees6158
@clintkees6158 9 месяцев назад
@@TheMistaneff i know they dont build things like they used to and my ruger is older than i am(which sadly means it wont accept anything over the 10 shot mags... without becoming a jamfactory...) but even with the ejector having busted and kicking about half of it some time back it still fires reliably and cycles just fine after i put it back to the correct facing(had gotten backwards at some point and was sticking out the back of the receiver?) didnt know much about the rifle growing up and aside the most basic of cleaning it had never had a full tear down and deep clean till some years ago at which point i decided to look up a diagram of it to see what this weird lever looking bit was only to find out it was what was left of the ejector haha. cant say on their pistols as mine is an ancient rifle but it has never given me trouble with misfires even with rounds that a buddies curious bullpup .22 wouldnt fire.
@dwarven1
@dwarven1 9 месяцев назад
@@clintkees6158 If your ruger has a busted ejector (and from the 10 rd mag comment, I'm guessing it's a 10/22), CALL RUGER. They have one of the very best customer service programs in the industry, and they'll fix your Ruger no matter HOW old it is. Failing all else, (if it's a 10/22) buy a new Ruger BX trigger group and drop it in - two pins - it comes with the extractor installed. But I'd call Ruger first. Heck, I'm an FFL, and when my wife's Mark II broke the hammer strut assembly I called Ruger to order a new one. They told me to send it in because it needed to be fitted by a gunsmith, and they tightened up the whole gun while they had it! (gun probably had 20,000+ rounds through it by then; she'd gotten it used). shoots great now.

I feel like the 9mm PCC should have been mentioned. It's SUCH a versatile platform. It can Essentially replace the 22LR. Cheap 9mm ammo runs about 25cents a round. They're small, lightweight, easy to shoot and they can do everything from training, plinking, defense, even Hunting if you know what you're doing. And small enough you can stuff one into a backpack and go unnoticed. I have a ton of firearms for different purposes but I feel like the PCC is a pretty viable 1 gun option.

I live in an area where you should make the assumption the other person is armed. An armed society is a polite society. I called out a tree trimming guy, he comes out and has a gun on his hip. A/C guy, same. It is safer that way, most people are good people and in the event a bad person does something the more people with firearms that know how to use them safely the less likely the bad man is going to get away with victimizing anyone.

I can agree with everything except the Mossberg Mav 88. I don't think I will ever repurchase another Mossberg. I bought a Mav 88 Security a few years ago. The 3rd shell I fired through it, the extractor broke. I called Mossberg to see if they would replace it and was told no, it had probably failed due to improper maintenance and storage of the firearm. Mind you, I bought this shotgun at a gun store and immediately took it to the firing range inside this gun store. The time between purchasing the firearm and the extractor breaking was maybe 20 minutes, at the most. After battling them to get them to stick to their warranty for a few weeks, I shot it with my 300 win mag a couple times and cut it up into pieces. Spend the extra money and buy a Remington 870 express tactical. usually in the $400 range.

I was a small business firearms dealer from 1982-2002. I sold all brands and by far Mossberg shotguns had the worst failure rate due to poor quality parts, finish, and workmanship. They had almost non-existent quality control. That said, there are many of them out there that are work horses.
@craigbean9124
@craigbean9124 5 месяцев назад
@kevinkelly1529 I understand that things break. Sometimes it is the user's fault. Other times, it is manufacturer error. But it was the customer service that turned me away from Mossberg.

It's not a bad idea if you really think about it. Everyone is carrying 9mm mostly, but it's not bad to have a few Hi-points in other calibers if...IF something happens to the 9mm supplies and all you can find is other calibers. The Hi-point CF 380 is identical to their 9mm Hi-point, except for the barrel and spring. Even the 9mm mag is identical to the 380 mag. You can pick up the barrel and spring for 25 bucks, allowing you to convert the .380 to 9mm without buying a whole new gun. The 10mm Hi-point can also fire the .40 s&w without any mods. All Hi-points are +P rated too.

1:28 Man, honestly I was afraid of my first pistol, too. As soon as I turned 21 I went to my local Academy (live in Texas) and bought myself a Springfield XD9 Mod.2 with a box of Remington white box FMJ ammo. I wanted a VP9 but couldn’t afford it so I settled. I was struggling with loading the magazine, and then once I got it loaded I was too afraid of loading a round into the chamber. Once I studied more and found channels like yours, Garand Thumb, mrguns&gear, Lucas Boykin, and generally other channels that I felt weren’t trying to “gate keep” the firearms market I got more comfortable, practiced more, and now being 28 I know a worlds more about guns, ammo, ballistics, etc. People that are scared of their firearms simply don’t know enough, yet. I love channels like yours that also attempt to educate people because sometimes that’s all folks need.

Nice list Chris. I love your opening comments on self protection. 💯, people are their 1st line of defense. This is one reason why, back in December of 2022, I made the decision to be a law abiding concealed carrier. To go, ALL in. Train, Train, Train some more. In ALL aspects of EDC carrying not just shooting. Well rounded in shooting, basic ( 1st aid ), hands on, and even knife training. I see it and hear it, ALL the dam time. Many people buy a pistol and put it up, never get out and train with it. Yes, the mantis dry firing kit is great, people still gotta get out to their local indoor and outdoor and do the real thing. Especially shooting on the move drills. My FAVORITE. I trian more on that than anything else. I know if I can get and maintain GOOD shot placement with my heart rate up. Stationary shooting be no problem. Bottom line is. People NEED to train, if they make that decision to own a firearm.
