If you live in a big city, you are likely familiar with the phenomenon known as hyper-gentrification. It has led to the disappearance of the mom and pop shops that make cities special. And it’s happening here in New York City, the home of Great Big Story. But there are old-school businesses and institutions that are surviving and even thriving in this challenging environment. From Delmonico’s, the legendary restaurant founded in 1837, to C.O. Bigelow, the oldest apothecary in the country, we pay homage to these irreplaceable New York City gems.
This Great Big Story was inspired by Genesis.

Welcome to the New York City edition of our newest series, “City Roots.” We’re going old school in the city that never sleeps. Join us in paying homage to the New York institutions that have stood the test of time.

how to have an iconic business: be a third generation owner
@phuongnguyen-yd3bn
@phuongnguyen-yd3bn 4 года назад
It’s not easy to keep a business up to the third generation, even keep the second generation stay in New York is not easy too. I have seen many restaurants in Chinatown just last for 40 years max, could say the owners ‘ sons keep the business just because they can’t find good job else where.

@@phuongnguyen-yd3bn it's starting to happen everywhere in NYC, the culture is always changing so businesses almost always go out of business after a generation.

My favorite NYC business would be a cafe I went to once. I forgot where it is, and sadly now it's gone. I know that my mother and grandmother went to it regularly, but I could only be brought once before they closed down.
