Homeschooling is all about choosing good curriculum. My mom was not "a doctor or scientist or something", we were homeschooled because we are the fundamentalists you make fun of, but we love you. But the curriculum was rigorous and prepared us well for college. And we were taught secular objections to the faith, and how to answer them. Whether your child is in public school or homeschool, YOU will have to teach your kids the things that matter yourself.

But thank the Lord above we all know how to do the Pythagorean Theorem and know that leaves are green because of a chemical called ChLoRoPhIlL! This might be sort of a non answer... But I think the best way to view it is that God gives what gifts he will to who he will. Even as a protestant I believe Joan of Arc was given visions from God. I think most people who think they have gifts don't. Like.... the vast majority....overwhelming majority even. But I do think God works miracles into people's lives in both subtle and obvious ways.
@thomasc9036
@thomasc9036 Месяц назад
@@spiffygonzales5160 That's not what the Cessationism vs Continuationalism debate is. There are two types of miracles/wonders. The first type is God's direct miracles like the flood, the resurrection of Jesus, 10 Plagues, or Sarah's pregnancy. God works these miracles to direct the world. No "true" Christians debate this other than Christian Liberalism which isn't even Christianity. The second type is the Supernatural portion of the Spiritual Gifts defined in passages like 1 Corinthians 12:1-31 or Romans 12:6. This type of wonders is the debate between two sides. The Spiritual Gifts are given to build up the church. Your point of about Joan of Arc is not a Spiritual Gift performed by a person. If it is true, then it falls under the first type. Does that help?
@spiffygonzales5160
@spiffygonzales5160 Месяц назад
@@thomasc9036 I didn't know that so I appreciate the info. But I'm more saying that God does what he does. So if a person gets gifts from God cool and if another person doesn't, also cool. Like I said it's a non answer.

My mom gave us rigorous learning material (I got a full scholarship to a secular college), and she tried to allow us to take extra time to explore our interests and make learning fun, not just a chore. My mom also had a masters degree in education. So there’s that.

Communion should be done with wine because: a. There was no grape juice 2000 years ago b. Temperance or the idea that drinking is sinful is unbiblical c. It was the historic practice until Welch’s grape juice came to the scene Ps. The bird should be named Chungus
@Grapefruit79
@Grapefruit79 Месяц назад
to be completely fair, some people have major issues with drinking. not because they think it's sinful, but because theyve seen what too much drinking can do and don't want to be sucked into that in any way, so they drink grape juice. my church has grape juice and wine available.

@@Grapefruit79 having issues with something in the bible isn't an excuse not to do it. if people can choose to replace communion with grape juice because "i dont want alcohol" then why can't people enter homosexual marriages simply because "i don't like the other gender"? in either case, you're welcome to do both. but it's not biblical and actually goes against the bible. Jesus said that the WINE was His blood, not the grape juice. if you use grape juice you aren't receiving communion, you're receiving grape juice and false hope.
@TheStarshipGarage
@TheStarshipGarage Месяц назад
People drink grape juice instead of wine as many people have a personal conviction not to drink alcohol due to knowing themselves or knowing people who have lost themselves to alcohol and do not wish to follow the same path (I am the latter), and other people simply aren't of age to drink, but still want to take communion. In my opinion, it doesn't matter what you do it with, the point is the reason WHY you are doing it.

I appreciate your careful pondering of all these issues. Really thought provoking. Here are where I fall on the issues, feel free to disagree or ask questions! 1. Continuationism 2. No to Apostolic Succession 3. I Homeschool 4. Completely forgot about headcoverings! at this point, no opinion. 5. Grape juice is fine for Communion. Ok, a bit more on each if you want to read: 1. I grew up with lots of Miracles and demonic in Africa, to deny that entirely would require some impressive explaining of my childhood. On the FLIP side however, I grew up with a lot of AG influence, and so 1 Corinthians 14 was a MAJOR shock when I read it as an adult... 2. I just don't want to limit God to a methodology if it isn't defined in Scripture, that being said, I think Apostolic succession is helpful in just discernment in general. Random Bob starting a random church isn't automatically wrong, but it is a red flag. Random Bob not having ANY sort of connection (or heaven forbid a negative relationship) with the longer standing elders in a community is a huge red flag! 3. I could write a book about why I homeschool over Public, just a few major points are: it's a better education, it's more well-rounded, socializing as a child with a diverse spectrum of ages is a benefit to everyone, and so many more reasons. I absolutely understand the reasoning of my kids being "salt" and "light" to public schools and more socializing with their immediate peers, but to me those benefits are hardly enough to sway me. Also, I just have to be intentional in finding other ways my kids can socialize with their peers. 5. A study found that grape juice off the shelf can have up to 0.086% Ethanol. Despite our pasteurization and preservatives. Grapes start fermenting really quickly after being pressed, so unless you go out of your way to remove it, grape juice will have alcohol. It's silly to say Biblical character didn't drink wine, as they would have had to miraculously remove the alcohol from their drinks. But it's also silly to say Grape juice isn't acceptable for Communion, as you are really just nitpicking percentages and modern definitions....
@BoondockBrony
@BoondockBrony 25 дней назад
Here's my two cents on apostolic succession. There's some leeway you need to have with it if you're a protestant if you are a strict complementarian and going high church. Most magisterial Protestantism now has some level of women being ordained and this is especially if women can become bishops. Otherwise you will see as most priests as invalid in some places, I think it's Norway I think that has more women clergy than men for example. Also not all Lutherans have episcopal polity some sects do, some don't so even *if* you have a conservative Lutheran church in the LCMS chances are if you are strict on apostolic succession guess what? Nothing is valid since some were not ordained by a bishop that was an episcopal leader. Biggest thing I noticed with some Romanists and EOs who look into protestantism is this issue, there's not many of them who go high church but there's enough you can see the issues they have.

My main quarrel with Charismatics and speaking nonhuman tongues is that many times these churches will say that if you can't speak in tongues that you aren't saved. Paul explains there is variety of gifts of the Spirit. Meanwhile 1st Corinthians 12:7-11 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b] 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

i agree with this!! i love how being the bride of Christ also points to the veil. Christ is the head and we are the body. i think of the veil as Christ over our heads, offering us protection. the husband is the head over the wife bc Christ is over the man. so i kinda look at it like that :) also, i like how it shows that by wearing the veil we are separated from the world and belong to Christ. it it's a symbol of modesty and humility to Christ. so i just think it's really sweet. i don't think it's a command in the way it was in that particular church due to prostitution going on then. i REALLY want to start veiling but i'm scared to. i don't want people to think i'm being legalist about it because it's NOT like that for me at all. i do feel that God has lead me to veiling, though. do you have any tips on how to start? i also would like to veil in church and outside of church :)

In regards to academics, I will say I went to an evangelical Christian school and our science class specifically was known to be the most rigorous in my part of the state. Our teacher was a seventh day Adventist and staunch evolutionist, but made sure we knew every possible theory of creation so that we could come to our own conclusions. I think the problem with public school is that it doesn't just expose kids to atheism and bad morals, but that it completely surrounds them with it. As a homeschooler, my parents didn't refuse to educate me about other worldviews, because you're correct. That just leads to leaving the faith as soon as you face even the most basic objections. So the best middle ground is to homeschool, but not shelter your kids from what non-Christians believe. Then they will have a firm grounding in truth and what others believe.

Out of those issues, I feel most qualified to talk on Homeschooling. When I was in highschool, I was a volunteer lobbyist in the Congressional Action Program (CAP) of the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA). So I got to learn all kinds of things about the realities of homeschooling. One, that overall, homeschooled students out-perform Public Schoolers in every measurable scholastic category, even though a large number of homeschool parents chose to do so because their local public school couldn't adequately accommodate their special needs kid. On the other hand, due to stories of a few terrible parents who abuse their kids and take their kids out of public school to hide the evidence, many government representatives are reluctant to budge on insisting that every kid should be in public school. Your family is going to be unique. You'll have to make your choices based on your unique kids. Out of the 4 kids my Christian parents raised, the eldest was public schooled all the way to college, remained a strong Christian throughout, and has a stable loving family to this day. The second eldest went to the exact same schools, wound up in prison, abandoned Christianity, divorced, estranged from two of his three kids, and is now happily married to a second wife. I was the third and probably the most dangerous. Started a fire in my middle school. Was homeschooled starting halfway through my freshman year because both the local public schools I attended in the 1st and 2nd semester were completely swamped with drugs and warring gangs. Both in public and in homeschool, I was able to figure out how to game the system and do the absolute least amount of effort and still wind up with 4.0 GPA. Had WAY more friends in homeschooling than in public schools because I knew I didn't have to spend all my attention on simply surviving the gang wars when surrounded by students and faculty you can't trust. I don't want to think what kind of monster I would have wound up had I stayed. Questioned God all through public school and Christian homeschool, and the faculty of the conservative Christian college I attended had very weak "Take it on faith" answers to my questions. But eventually renewed my faith after a life threatening illness. The youngest of us was pretty much a perfect angel, homeschooled starting in the first year of middle school, and is now everybody's best buddy. Doesn't regret "missing out" on things like public showers after P.E. in the least. All this to say: there is no magic bullet. A kid's chances of making it to adulthood as a toughened special forces Christian taking the public school rout are probably pretty slim on average. Most people wind up resembling the people that surround them, public schooled or not. But every kid's unique. And so is every environment. Maybe your kids'll be the ones to chase the drugs and gangs out of your local public highschool. Or maybe they'll be little monsters that need the local public school kids' angelic influence to keep them from going off the rails. Best of luck figuring out the best fit for your unique circumstances. But if you wind up with a kid like I was... probably safest for all the other kids to you take him out of public schools.

To me the one about public schools is a no-brainer... I was homeschooled in a Liberal part of *Canada* and despite the shortcomings, especially now being 32 years old homeschooling 4 kids of my own, I wouldn't have it any other way. Even if you believe in institutional reform, it's absurd to think that *children* suitable warriors for the front line, especially when those children are depraved by nature, lol. It's a lot easier to not overshelter than people think; school actually limits your experiences, not just academically, but because it is not a reflection of most of the real world.

Richard, I would put myself in the Presby-costal category. I am familiar with the Presbyterian Charismatic Communion (PCC - 1966 or 1967), which evolved into the Presbyterian-Reformed Ministries International (PRMI) - the organization you were referring to. I have worked with them in the past with both the PCC (at Princeton Seminary) and PRMI (later in my ministry). Their material I have on my shelf is the best material on a Reformed perspective on the spiritual gifts I have ever run across. Thanks for this video. Keep up the good work, sir.

Homeschool is needed to build up strong believers who are ready to go and to battle with the world, to NOT retreat. You cannot expect that of children, absolutely not for kids below high school. Homeschool done right builds faith and prepares for the real world. Organizations like Stoa deliberately prepare them to answer the questions the world will ask. I agree that retreating is not the right call, but you don’t send your kids to the front lines.

There is one underlying presupposition with the cessationism vs continuationism debate: that all we see in certain Pentecostal and Charismatic churches today are actually the works of the Holy Spirit as in the book of Acts. However, among the fruits of the Holy Spirit, the last but not least is self-control. If something causes people to lose their mind, why do we blame the Holy Spirit for this? The gift of the Holy Spirit has certainly not ceased, as many faithful people pursue their primary vocation as Christians with the help of the Holy Spirit. Those so-called "spiritual gifts" such as mindless gibberish or fake healing performances are tricks of the magicians at best, and blasphemous and demonic at worst.

When it comes to speaking in tongues from my understanding it's one of two things; being given the gift of speaking in a different language or just an "angelic tongue" What I will say is I am not an interpreter of tongues but occasionally when people speak in tongues I recognize my own language (lingala) and I hear people say "Aza na yo" which means "He is with you" and "Yesu nzambe" which means "Jesus is God" so I genuinely believe the "gibberish" could be interpreted (if you have the gift) but some people don't have the gift and fake it. HOWEVER, I know someone once heard someone say "God is dead" in greek😐so it's 50/50

Speaking of schooling, I'm from Poland, which is generally considered to be 90+% catholic (not true btw, especially in my generation), and I've attended a catholic school. Not because it was catholic, but it was (and still sort of is) one of the best schools in our country. I'd say it's not true, that there is less secularism, and progressivism in catholic schools, I think 75% of people in my class were eighter atheist, or non-practising. The difference, however is in the fact, that people in my school were really open-minded, converstaion focused, and generally respectful. My best friend is an atheist, but we like and respect each other, and agree to disagree in questions of faith. I think that the better the school, the more intelligent the students, the more respectful and considerate the people will be. And I know there are a lot of disrespectful and inconsiderate people in my country

As to your comments about public schools, I know it's a hard choice. I went to a non-denominational middle school (technically only 7-8) and it was a lot like you were saying. Sheltered kids, poor academics, an "atheist factory". But then I went to a Lutheran High School and it was amazing. I live in Nevada (which isn't known for it's schools), but my high school was regarded as the best school in Nevada. Amazing academics, pretty good (but not great athletics), superb arts, abounding in opportunities. You took a theology class each year (amazingly taught) and in your senior year you learned apologetics/how to logically argue for Christianity. My high school was FAR better funded, and I think of lot of the educational quality has to deal with that.

On the Continuationist v Cessationist debate I didn’t have a choice because I was speaking in tongues as a new Christian BEFORE I even knew what it was or had even heard of it. I was on my own in prayer and these words started flowing out of my mouth. I told my Christian friends and they told me what it was. I am however still on the cautious end of the charismatic movement. Sometimes spiritual gifts can be abused or taken too far. I’ve never prayed in tongues loudly during a church meeting. I speak in tongues only in private or quietly under my breath, as I’ve never felt there is an interpretation available. My current church is both charismatic and Reformed, but doesn’t really lean that heavy into the charismatic side of things at present.

Headcoverings: the reason we don’t understand this is because no one wears hats anymore. Both men and women usually covered their heads outdoors, and men uncovered indoors. But there was a permanent grey area for children and unmarried women. Children because it is difficult to keep the hat on them, unmarried women because the goal was to get them married, so showing some hair was a tasteful way to express that they are seeking marriage. But some folks bent the rules in either direction. For the woman to uncover symbolizes intimacy. Women tended to use hoods/scarfs, which can’t be removed so easy like hats, so these stayed on indoors. Standards and fashions obviously played a role, but this has basically been universal in every culture that married women conceal their hair. Thus in Church the symbolism is that all women are “married” in the sense that they do not come into the church seeking the intimacy of other people, only intimacy with the Lord. Hence the head covering is the final piece of modest dress: it does not make any sense to add a veil to cover the hair when skin is visible. For men the same principles apply but it has the opposite effect: the male removes his hat because of his intimacy with the lord (there is no risk of this being seen as attracting the intimacy of others). The lesser clergy retain their hats when seated and when preaching, and for the psalms, but not for the most solemn prayers. The superior clergy maintain their hats even for certain solemn prayers. You’ve sort of come full circle: the women cover their heads in church to signify that they are (as the natural law dictates) private creatures. Men uncover because they are the active/public principle. But clergy begin to cover again to represent how they become more separate from the world and hopefully more intimate with God. Another reason clergy cover is because the Church is a bride.

As a Pentecostal Christian, speaking in tongues is more of a sign of the Holy Spirit. When someone is filled they possibly can speak in tongues. Not everyone can, and sometimes it is incoherent babbling. There are other times where there are interpretations in the congregation (referencing the 1st Corinthians passage on interpretations), and when that interpretation is spoken it truly is an awe inspiring moment. Ive been to Pentecostal churches where the majority of the church spoke in tongues, but there were no interpretations, as opposed to others where it's a rare occourance and you feel the presence of God when it is spoken.
