Phily, the quality and content of your videos is exceptional! You have a really engaging presenting style and the production is awesome! Keep up the great work!
@@PhilyBowden I'm assuming your account is eligible for 'Super Thanks'. Is that something you'd consider enabling so we could show some appreciation direct via RU-vid? If you've already considered it and decided against, don't feel you have to reply why etc - I know youtube takes a hefty chunk. but it'd be good to have the chance to give something spontaneously rather than a patreon signup. Thanks again!
Great advice, having only done one marathon last year I broke it up into 3 sections 10 miles, 10 miles then the final 10k and that helped. I also ignored what my watch suggested as a time and just thought treat it like a super long run, with the main aim being to finish without stopping.
I ran my first marathon only last month and what you covered really hit home, particularly half way is 20 miles and that it will hurt. Can't underestimate the come down afterwards either. Really good video.
Really excellent advice can relate to everything you said from my marathon running days and new marathoners listen to this advice Phily is 100% correct, also format of presentation brilliant so easy to listen too and keeps your attention.
Something I've noticed in doing 8 marathons is that someone who "looks" less fit or much older than you *will* overtake you in the second half! (In fact, I should now be that person. But I'm not).
Really enjoyed this one. I remember when training for my first marathon I would become ravenous 2 days after my long run and would eat everything in sight. 😂
I came back to running last year age 61 after a 30 year break (was still cycling ) Managed Belfast marathon 3.13.21 and planning Sub 3 at Dublin in a few weeks .I think knowing your body and listening to it helps lots. And as you say not being a slave to plan.Keep up the good work 😊
Great tips Phily! Running Run2Paris next week which should be 4 half marathons over 4 days but 1 of my teammates pulled out so will be 1 Marathon and 3 half marathons and I’ve never run a Marathon before 😬😬
Great video. I’ve not run a marathon yet, a half was painful enough! I’m tempted to skip road marathons entirely and do a 50k trail run (slower with better fuelling). Thoughts? Do you do any trails or would that be bad for your track and road races?
Oh interesting take! I’ve not really raced any trails no, cross country would be the closest to that. Love doing some easy runs on the trails though I think a trail marathon or 50k would see me off.. I’d probably lose concentration and fall flat on my face 😂
That's exactly what I did, and I don't regret it! A 50k might be a bit longer than a marathon, but the training and races themselves are so much more relaxed. Running a marathon in the road isn't high on my list, it'd have to be a very cool race. I wound up running a trail marathon to get my mojo back after a DNF on a brutal mountain 50k, and it was mostly a blast though!
Here's one for you Phily half way around a marathon is mile 20 (brickwall)... true But when you run your first ultra - there is no brick wall at mile 20... (get that thought in your head and you will not struggle at mile 26
@@PhilyBowden I was so irritated trying for a marathon the Tissington Trail and lockdown stopped that so after all the training I ran 7 laps of the near town... each lap is 7 miles I asked lots of tips of Ultra runners, and they all said its in your head... you know you can run, crawl and walk them all, and all of a sudden run again... well thats an Ultra... and the Ultra is only at its minimum 31.06 miles only 6 miles more than an a marathon.... and the tips I had where its only 6 more miles..... can you run and easy 6 after a marathon (then thats an Ultra).... or can you run it at a progressive pace - which is what I did.... 4:47:04 the fastest and first Ultra I've run ..... then ran 2 more that year ..... we all have doubts in ours heads thats the only hurdle - get out there!!
Phily I just found your channel from Harry’s top park run video, these are great tips and I will try them as I prepare for the Cardiff Marathon. Thanks
Great video Phily and great advice too . I have the TCS New York City Marathon in November have done 7 marathons up till now and it's all about how you are on the day . Keep up the good work and good luck in night of the 10ks 👍🙂
I don't care how much I hurt, I'll take a warm bath over the ice! 😆 Great tips and info! I only do trail races now, and trail marathons aren't as common, but anyone who can run a marathon can run a 50k. It's a completely different world, not focused on pace, and so much fun!
Double the amount I have! Definitely not an expert here but I worked with a sports dietician in my build up which really helped make sure I was getting enough calories for the training, especially carbs and protein!
