Hi The Financial Diet, I enjoy watching these videos on a daily basis. However, as a deaf student, I need captions to understand the content communicated in these videos. It seems to be hit-or-miss with many of the videos uploaded to the channel regarding whether it is captioned or not. Adding captions to all of your videos will be a huge benefit to not only me, but to entire the deaf community as well as those who appreciate having the captions with the audio, such as English language learners. Thanks!

Agreed about the English language learners (and the deaf). I have some ESL students that try and live outside of their means, and it helps them study English as well.

Great diet tips! I always had trouble with fruit because I live alone and it can be difficult to eat all of the fruit you buy before it goes bad. But I found a solution! I'll buy fruit when it's cheap and eat them while they're fresh. Once they start going bad, I cut them up and freeze them. This works for all fruits, apples, berries, stonefruit, you name it. Once I have a decent frozen bag going, I just make 1 cup frozen fruit smoothies in the morning! Now I'm not wasting any fruit while eating the right amounts of it.

One thing I’ve recently started to try is making the home more environmentally sound. We’ve switched to produce bags, cloth napkins, a filtered pitcher, metal straws, reusable makeup pads, and reusable beeswax paper. We’re already seeing the difference in what we buy at the grocery store and how much we’re saving by not constantly buying paper towels, plastic straws, plastic cling wrap, bottled water, and cotton pads/makeup wipes. It’s a small part of the big picture but it feels good to do something for the environment, eat better, and save money all at one time :)

daniamz We're doing the same and it's wonderful. Some things aren't cheaper for us but the environmental cost is way down and that's so important too!

I am getting a compost tumbler to help 'recycle' some of those things, too. Natural fabric scraps once those rags fall apart can go in. Paper waste in some forms can go in. Cotton pads and that beeswax paper? Chuck it in. Food scraps of the non-milk or meat kind? Yep, in there too, along with yard clippings and leaves. Turn it a few times a week and in two or three weeks you can have decent compost. After awhile, you could have a decent bin of it to start selling off.
@ellepwnzstevedaily
@ellepwnzstevedaily 6 лет назад
Lena H, I’ve heard you’ve gotta be careful about the amount of yard clippings and leaves you add to your bin? We have a homemade tumble bin (a 55gal plastic drum we got for free(!!!) with a metal pipe through the center, a hatch with a latch, and 1” aeration holes all around it), and I LOVE it. I vermicomposted for years, but once I went vegan at home (vegetarian away), the amount of fruit and veg scrap skyrocketed and my wormies just couldn’t keep up...unless I’d gotten multiple composters, and at about $150 each, that just wasn’t going to happen. I’d love to know how yours works out with clippings in it, since we definitely have plenty we could add! We’re also slowly making changes over to more eco friendly items, but have used reusable grocery and produce bags for years now...though sometimes I get a paper bag here and there if there hasn’t been enough junk mail to shred for the compost bin. Recently, I switched to Uncle Harry’s Remineralizing Toothpaste, because I was looking for ~something~ not in a plastic tube and not made in a coconut oil base like basically everything on Etsy. It’s about $10/jar, but for 2 people 2x/day, it’s gonna last my husband and I at least 3mos. I also recently invested in some glass to go containers with a divider, and I keep one in my stupidly big purse, and then 2 in the car. Folks look at me like I’m crazy when I pull them out, but it cuts back on TONS of styrofoam, especially if you KNOW you’re someone like me who ALWAYS has leftovers. I also keep glass of metal straws in my wallet and some in the glove box, along with little packets of silverware (one in my purse, a couple in the glove box) that I bought and filled from Goodwill. No more plastic silverware now, too! Oh, and random and unrelated to eating out, we switched to soap nuts! They’re AWESOME! And compostable! I use them in the laundry AND make spray cleaner to clean our pet rats’ enclosure and dogs’ items, too! If you’ve been thinking about soap nuts, pull the trigger; they’re amazing! Two things I’d LOVE to replace with low or zero waste alternatives are color safe shampoo and conditioner. I’ve watched a ton of RU-vid videos and just can’t find anything that does it for me. If anyone’s got an alternative they love, I’d LOVE to hear it!
@JennyWas13

daniamz yes! I use face halos now and estimate I have saved around $40 on makeup remover in only 3 months (I wear makeup every day). I also love my insulated aluminium water bottle as I bring it with me everywhere and even if I leave it in my car for hours i always have cold water ready to go and never need to buy any drinks while I’m out and about.

Reusable straws are icky, but I am glad I bought Thinx. They were more upfront, but I bought them once and I haven’t bought pads since. Not buying pads for 4 years, they’ve probably paid for themselves plus they’re comfy and no more leaks staining clothing and bedding, so they’ve definitely paid for themselves.

As a piece of honest feedback, I think you guys mention the “side job” as a solution to everything way too often. There are a lot of people in this country, and I’m sure in this channel too that are inmigrants in visas that don’t allow them to have a “side gig”, not even if you’re doing it for free. Getting a little more creative in this matter would be great, as I always feel a little hopeless when you say things like “everyone should have a side job”.

@camagnuson6108

Agreed. They're using it as an easy answer for everything. Plus, many, if not most, people will never find a "side job" / "side hustle" that will produce any kind of money. (edit to add) plus, the go-to "side hustle" is to sell your own posessions, a recommendation is that has an obvious limitation to it.

Absolutely. I don't know how it works in the US, but in the UK you'd be expected to register as self-employed with HMRC and then file your tax return every year (and that's exhausting enough when you're full time self-employed). I also don't think it's fair to undercut the people who are trying to do your side gig as their full time thing- how much can you dedicate yourself to something you're only doing part time?

Had a friend post a picture on Facebook that had a burger and a salad with $2 and $12 labeled respectively and saying “this is why I don’t eat healthy” and I just 🤦🏻‍♀️. Yes if you’re buying fast food, healthy options will be more expensive. But if you’re shopping at a grocery store or at a normal sit down restaurant, the healthier options are usually less expensive in my experience. I don’t think a lot of people ever actually learned to shop for and cook their own food in a healthy and budget friendly way and that makes me really sad.
@lanaeglover818
@lanaeglover818 6 лет назад
I think it depends on whether you already cook, and how much time you can invest in cooking though. I definitely spend more to eat healthier. Lean meats and fish usually cost more than fattier meats, for an easy example. And the easiest cheap foods are mostly empty carbs - Ramen, mac & cheese, rice, potatoes, etc.
@thevoxdeus
@thevoxdeus 6 лет назад
Some healthy options are cheap. You can get lots of protein from beans, canned tuna, eggs, peanuts, etc, but it's relatively expensive to buy enough fruits and quality veggies to fill up and get your nutrition that way. You're correct though that it's MUCH cheaper to prepare food at home than to buy it at the drive-through. That's true whether you're making hamburgers, or salads, or preparing a more complicated meal. As some one who likes to cook and is pretty good at it, I feel stupid when I get in the habit of eating out, because the food is more expensive, less nutritious, and it's not even GOOD compared to what I make myself. But some one like my mom, who despite her best efforts, can't seem to cook anything more complicated than a frozen pizza or a boxed cake mix, she's got more limited options. She still eats healthy, but it's more expensive/less satisfying for her.

This is my go to recipe for eating healthy and yummy. I call it taco rice and you can basically do anything with it. You can make it with meat, beans, tofu, veggie ground round etc. Eat it as a side dish, in a burrito, in a hard shell, in a taco salad, as nachos etc. My recipe should last you a week or more of meals for 2 people. 1. Use the biggest pan you own. Cook your protein. 2. While that cooks, make your rice (preferably brown rice) 3. Rice some cauliflower by either using a cheese grater, a blender or a food processor. 4. Once both are fully cooked, drain the grease from the protein and mix in the rice and cauliflower and a can of diced tomatoes. 5. Add in veggies you like. I use peppers, celery, onion and garlic. 6. Add in plenty of taco seasoning 7. Let simmer for 10 minutes, stirring to distribute the flavour. 8. Enjoy!

I would bring a nuance to the canned vegetables: the heat from the canning process destroys most vitamins. Freezing fruits and vegetables, however, protects them during transportation until they're consumed. So fresh (ideally in season like you said) or frozen would be better options than canned. Great video! :)

But you need to cook frozen veggies, too. Take a good mix and add some multivitamins to your diet. When eating fruit, the main benefit is not the vitamins, you can take pills. The main benefit is the fiber and the secondary plant molecules.

We have been on a strict budget and my husband and I both make room in our budget for his gym membership ( Cheap & not fancy at all $14.00 per month), yoga and fitness classes for myself ( $200. per month ~ I am always more expensive!) And we walk Every. Single. Day. Together. FREEE! We just got back from a trip to Victoria, Canada and Seattle, Washington and we literally did not pay for one Lyft, Uber or Taxi! Walking is fun a free people! We put away money each month to pay for our trip so when we got home we wouldn't have to deal with stress, anxiety or shame for over spending. The travel piece is complex for many people, I think. Even lower budget travel adds up when you include costs for pet sitting/boarding, childcare and eating out. We've stuck to driving almost everywhere in the past 3 years, only flying when it's over 15 hours of driving. It still adds up. Once we're finished paying off our consumer debt and have our $20k emergency fund in place, I think we'll be more free to take short trips.

Wow! I love this video, Chelsea! Thank you for sharing your thoughts & journey. For a while I, too, was hesitant to joining a local spinning studio, but I am so grateful that I have joined the studio. I have connected with community, made friends, and feel more healthful & stronger with every class I take. Also, I have a small capsule exercise wardrobe, and when I need new pieces I buy them very gently used (most of the time brand new!) on Poshmark. (I firmly believe that no one really cares what you wear!) I completely agree with you about diet - Thank you for bringing this topic to light. My husband & I are whole food, plant based vegans (no oils, added salt, processed sugar), and we are the healthiest we have ever been. We eat the food that loves us (and the planet) back! From our focus on healthful eating, we prepare & cook our meals at home. While we spend about $800/month on organic food at the grocery store (we love Trader Joe's!), we spend a very, very small amount of money on meals/snacks out because we have a focus on healthful eating. Over time we have found that we just do not feel our best after eating out. We know we are investing in our future selves - We're not going to spend our later years in (and money on) Dr.'s office visits & medications for completely avoidable lifestyle-related diseases.

This channel is promoting tons of useful tips for money saving, earning and thinking about money flow! Thank you TFD for all the advises - I wish, I found this channel a bit more early, it would save me a lot of costs and mistakes when planning my budget, spending, money buffers etc. Although I live in Europe and some of the questions are less relatable, most of suggestions are useful and I can catch them, think about them and implement easily in my life. This channel is definitely underrated - something like this should be learned at schools, promoted and made as a social norm - to be responsible grown-up person with understanding how money flow works and what you can assure with your own reasoning of this process and actions/steps you can make. We are not just "homo-consumerus" - we are people who have to learn how to manage finance questions. It is as important as survival and running from dangerous predators was few billions of years ago - the modern battle with every day raptors, enemies and traps and how to avoid them, but just in the environment of money. Thank you TFD! You have shown a better way how to be secure and more confident about my own finances with myself, friends and family! Good luck in finding new topics and sharing the knowledge! ;)

“Americans are working longer hours than any other developed economy” - erm that’s what I thought before I moved to the US. False (at least on my field)! When I moved to the US I realised that Americans are spending their money differently than we do in Europe. In Europe we spend on traveling, buying good ingredients for cooking or on our house. Americans seem to spend their money on buying LOADS of stuff, generally speaking consumerism was invented in the US I think - most people have several credit cards and using all of them actively. Also Americans have several trips Starbucks per day and eat out a lot more than we do.

Wow! You've got good tingly thrifting senses! I used to be like that, but I've noticed that the Goodwills in my area have started substantially marking up the name-brand and quality items because they recognize the value as well. It's hard for me to get anything good for that cheap anymore. Then again, I do live outside a big city. So that may be why.

For the staycation idea. Check your local library. Some of them have tickets you can check out for local museums. My husband and I plan on using these in order to see the city we live in on a budget.

Alot of times I live to listen to your videos in the background and get other work done since there isn't much going on visually in your videos. I think a podcast where you get to go into greater detail will be so much fun too

Do you guys get annoyed with so many people telling you what to do in the comment section like you're stupid and haven't been doing this for years? Love the video! Very true for the most part, except that some jobs don't offer vacation. As crazy as that sounds. If you work while you're in school, you most likely need those extra hours you get on school breaks for the extra money instead of time off requests.

My cheap fitness tip: calisthenics. Many towns & cities have built designated parks for calisthenics. I would recommend getting gymnastic rings or (diy) monkii bars for a home workout as when working out at home, the barrier to doing it is much lower and it is a good option for people with no calisthenics park in range. It is really cheap to do and delivers serious gains if done right. The information needed to do it right can be found in huge quantities on the internet.

Hi Chelsea! I’m loving a lot of your videos, they are great! No matter if they apply only to “Americans” but I try my best to take the necessary information and use it as my advantage!. I would really like to follow your advices as a “side job”, but here in Italy, where I live we have a very high tax rates. We pay almost 53% of our income in taxes that gets higher the more you earn, and we pay them in advance (not by the end of the year), yes we have public health care, public retirement plans and unemployment support for 2 years, but it is almost impossible to do side jobs, i tried but many times I had to return most of my extra income in taxes. It is very frustrating 😔... i feel the less effort you do, the more you earn...

I cook at home nearly every day and I spend about 10 euro's on groceries (for two people) and about half an hour to cook every day. I find I spend less when I buy for more days at once. I don't like reheated food so I don't usually cook big batches (but sometimes I'll make enough for two days because a lot of recipes are four servings) but when I buy for a week I tend to get bigger quantities of ingredients and combine them in different ways.

By the way, Citibike and other such bike share programs are an excellent, low cost, healthy way to get around cities (for urban viewers.) They also often have reward programs which in addition to having the social benefit of helping to redistribute the bikes, if you get a certain amount of points, you get a week extension on your membership, up to 4 weeks! Then they pay you $1 for ever 10 points after 80 points. Not all reward programs are worth it, but this one for Citibike definitely is. Also, have people make sure that they take advantage of discount programs offered at work. Most people aren't even aware of such things to even use them and unwittingly pay loads more. : )

I don't know if it's where I live but I find the most expensive protein sources to actual be the non animal product ones. I agree that eating healthy is actually cheaper than eating crap. I bought 3 days worth of veggies the other day for under ten dollars and my mom was shocked at who little I spent on it because I had bought asparagus as well. I typically consume half of the bulk of my food in a veggies and produce so $10 of junk would have gotten me 1/4 for one day, but I made it stretch to 50% of 3 days!

If you have the option between canned and frozen produce, try to buy frozen. The produce is picked at the height of it's freshness so it's more nutritious, and also has more nutritional value than canned. The process used for canning does compromise some of the nutrients, just like cooking veggies in boiling water does (the nutrients leach into the water), versus steaming them either in the microwave or on the stovetop.

my affordable luxuries: visit to a thrift store/used bookstore, one cafe drink/pastry (about once every 1-2 months), getting a chunk of fancy cheese, buying some discounted flowers.... don't have to be big luxuries or anything recurring, if just a couple dollars are enough to make your day :)

Blue Jedi just take weekend vactions. I dont know where you live but just reseach and ask around.Or do what i did with my best friend once...just get in the car with a few items and drive we ended up in lodi at a cute little b&b with a winery nearby. Look for places not to far unless you have miles stacked up on your credit card. Take the weekend off or if you have saturday and sunday off try to leave early friday. i do them all the time and its so relaxing get a small bag or backpack,and go to the nearest city or something. I dont know where you live but i live in sacramento california and these are some examples of what we do. Me and my husband take trips to Lodi (great affordable wine tours,less than 1 hour away) NAPA(a little more expensive, but so romantic or you can make it a girls trip which many places have discounts for, an hour and a half away) Tahoe(great weekend get away in the fall...it can be hot in sacramento and when you get up to tahoe its snowing, about 2 hours away; 3 if we stop on the road 😉) The bay area (has San Fransisco, emerald city, oceania, and plenty of things to do if you want a beachy get away)

Regarding cooking and shopping in bulk: Where does it all go? I know you live in a small NYC apartment. I also live in a fairly small condo and storage space is at a premium. I also live in a city where groceries are pretty expensive. Costco tends to represent the most significant savings, but I just don't have space for the huge quantities.

Also, might as well share my favourite cheap and healthy meal: An omelette. Eggs are dirt cheap and high in protein. Throw in whatever leftover meat you might have (if you want), whatever leftover vegetables you might have, a bit of shredded cheese, and you have a full meal that's satisfying, really healthy, and cheap. Not so great for vegans, of course.

My difficulty with food is that I've become dependant on homeless food services. They feed me. Quite well, and it's actually quite good food, but it's not always as good as I would like for my health as I want to start aiming for a career in physical performance arts. I wanna figure out how to spend as little money as possible on food that can complement or sometimes replace what I get at the free services, so that I actually make sure I avoid sugars and I have balanced meals all the time. Maybe just a little prepped snack thingy that can replace desserts or other things I shouldn't be eating. Plus, some days, I can't find the time to get the free dinner. I need a way to feed myself on those days without putting a big hole in my very limited income. Paying my appartment, internet and phone, as well as bus fares, it hurts a lot. I don't really have anything left for food. I need a way to fix that.

I'm always just a bit thrown off by how bright everything is. If that's intentional, totally fine. If not, you should stop down your camera a couple of clicks and see how that looks.
