This is smart lol, I want my house to be interesting and artsy, an full of things that make me feel cozy. One thing that more people should think about, how does your home make you feel? How do you want it to make you feel? Obviously comfortable or more productive, it depends on the person not the trend or group. Don't waste stuff on things you don't want or have use for, or stuff that you KNOW you'll never use but just want to look good.

Something she didn't mention -- I think a big part of this is knowing yourself and what truly brings you happiness. I can use an iphone 6 happily for the rest of my life, I don't need cable or fancy gym stuff but I use my VitaMix almost everyday and rooms that are decorated and organized properly keep me sane. I don't think you should write these things off as unnecessary, rather be more thoughtful and realistic about your purchases.

Diff people have diff needs. I use my waffle iron and deep fryer at least once a month. I use my stand mixer enough during the holiday season alone to make the money/space costs worth it. I don't however use all my pie dishes and cake tins on a frequent bases, but the times I DO use them far make up for the times I don't. She never said "don't buy ever" but "think with your decision making brain and not your status/looks shiny brain and determine if the use>(cost+space+upkeep ) if it's not then you find work arounds (like a metal bowl and a wire whisk for a stand mixer or a cast iron pan for deep frying) like don't buy a fancy camera if your not going to use it for your job/extensively as a hobby when phone cameras are fairly equatable these days, however if you take thousands of pics with your camera, spend the time editing and processing them, and always think "if I had a better lens I could do x" or "I wish my phone was capable of y" then spend the money on a decent quality camera and a small fortune on lenses. If not then just make do with your phones software and save yourself a few grand.

@stephaniejane306

Agreed. Things like birth certificates, passports, even deeds of cars, houses etc need to kept physical on hand. Perhaps a safe that can double as a filing cabinet or a specific "emergency" or "go" folder that contains all important documents. I have a specific folder that I can just grab in an emergency that has my birth certificate, citizenship stuff, christening stuff, tax file number, working with children check, and a few important can't be replaced photos like my deceased grandparents in it.

I find number 8 to be an odd one because in the UK the sitting room is just that, a place with sofa's that you sit. It can be used socialise, watch TV, read, play on your phone ect. My mum had two, one for the children and the nice one that was mainly used by adults. Both were used regularly but the 'adult' one had more rules if you wanted to be in it, mainly so that the furniture/rugs were kept in better condition.

@gray_mara
@gray_mara 7 месяцев назад
It was a bit jarring to me, too. Here a sitting room is a casual room where you spend 90% of your waking hours at home. Unlike a formal lounge or a formal living room, a sitting room is always informal and for daily use by the whole family. Maybe it's an American thing, or maybe it's just the presenter.

There is something to be careful about regarding used furniture, especially pieces that were found on treelawns or dumpsters: bedbugs! If you bring in an infested piece of furniture, you will find yourself spending hundreds of dollars on extermination and replacement of furniture items. So, it may pay in the long run to buy something new if you live in an area where bedbugs are a problem.

The only items in my house that were bought new are 2 of my couches and my bedroom suite. My couches are almost 10 years old and look brand new because I spent more for a better product. The bedroom suite was heavily damaged 2 years ago by movers (there's a waste of money!). I'm still using it, and I've fixed most of it, although much can't be fixed because it was my first new furniture buy wheni was 20 and it's not solid wood.... Although it looks it. As far as used Furniture goes, my house is full of it. I'm pretty sure I'm overspending on house and contents of Furniture, but thrift, yard sales, and stuff given to me is much cheaper than buying anything new. It's also much better made. I inspect everything and if I'm not sure about it, it goes into the detached garage for 6 months or more. Some people actually do this for a year just to be safe or they use a storage unit (although that's not money conscience either).

I’d like to make an argument for the sitting room: We live in a town house, and the living room is the first room you walk through when you come in the front door (which is true for many, if not most apartments). We have had a giant TV in this room for years. Here’s the problem: I hung out in this room all the time, which meant all my “hanging out debris” - comfy couch, cushy rug, blankets, remotes, gaming consoles - were the first things I saw any time I walked into my house. Not only that, but all this comfy stuff was crossing paths with our shoes, jackets, handbags, mail, etc. My relaxing area felt way too close to my front door. So we moved our giant TV up to our spare room, which we’ve now made into the TV room. Since then, I’ve been able to keep my new “sitting room” clean and inviting for guests, or to sit and enjoy coffee and music in the mornings. It’s the first thing I see when I walk in my home, and it makes me feel like my life is a bit more together. I even watch less pointless TV now. But I get to go hide away in my much cleaner TV room once I am ready to bunker down. TL;DR it can be really nice to separate your hangout space from your entryway, if you have the option.
@StephanieGraska
@StephanieGraska 5 лет назад
I feel like a "sitting room" is a much more outdated concept (as far as homebuilder layouts) but should be one that should be embraced. As a child in the South, I grew up with one and it grew to be my favorite "quiet place" to play, draw or read with no distractions. As an adult, I don't have a room in my house to designate for a "sitting room", per say, but have found that my screened in porch provides nearly the same function and even am drawn to the quiet security in the coldest of months (plus I get the boost of nature!). The other tips are great but I have to say that every home benefits from a "Zen" space; quite honestly, that is the true heart of the home.
@alexc2265
@alexc2265 4 года назад
Yeah, I see aesthetic reasons for having one too. We might like how having it affects the rest of a home layout. Sometimes a sufficiently large foyer might do the same work of making the tv chill area not too close to the door, but still.

Stephanie Graska I currently have an extra room in my house designated as a sitting room and used for exactly this purpose. It has a digital ban: no devices are allowed. Purely analog. It’s the smallest room and it took forever to figure out what to do with it. It gets the best light in the house though. Very comfy with a small built in inside the closet that I’m leveraging as a bookcase and storage for writing/art supplies. It’s nice to get a break in there and just be.
@RIXRADvidz
@RIXRADvidz 4 года назад
I'm on that, it's a space ready to receive guests, clean, neat, well appointed, the Sitting Room is where you show your best to your guests, art, furniture, design choices. most NYC apartments don't have a designated sitting room, you all call it the main space, where the couch/bed, chair(s) and table are not part of the kitchen or bath.

TL;DW Buy what's necessary, for frequent use, with no sufficient alternatives. And use what you do have. List (with reasons): 9. Elaborate exercise equipment and machinery (buy what you will use, can do most exercise without, building habits is better than feel-good shopping) 8. Kitchen gadgets and appliances (usually rarely used, hard to care for, takes more space) 7. Very specific ingredients and foods (many are replaceable), overly prepackaged (overpriced for most purposes) 6. Cable TV package (internet services are cheaper, see: cordcutter) 5. Paper organization containers (scan of organize digitally what you can) 4. Cleaning products for home and body (cheaper and diy alternatives are good enough) 3. Perfectly matching, brand new, themed items - furniture, dishes etc (overpriced and harder to replace) 2. Unused (guest)rooms (space is expensive, find more valuable use) 1. Phones, laptops especially if tied to contracts or other financial services (care for and fix what you have)

Dr. Bronner's soap is a multi-tasker! It's good as a body wash, face wash and shampoo, and so much more! That bottle will last a long time because you dilute it with water every time you use it. I saved foaming soap dispensers to fill it 1/3 with soap and the other 2/3 with water.

To all the pillow commenters: If you like how pillows look and they have aesthetic value for you, their cost per use is incredibly low since their 'use' is looking nice. They aren't strikely necessary but neither is decor in general. Their value is subjective, but I think we can agree that living (or working) in a space that looks nice is pleasant and valuable.

Many of the ideas Chelsea is talking about require a shift in the mindset, which suggests there should be some mental work done before you set up your perfect home, so you can take shopping decisions later on in life freely, equipped with the new mentality. After you've sorted out your mental space rationally, it gets really easy to look at material objects from another perspective and organise your home in the most efficient way ever.

My biggest item i think you dont need to buy is NEW fancy occasion wear when a new occasion comes up. After formal and during uni I developed a small collection of nice, decent quality, and not overly distinctive occasion wear (mostly black and neutral colours, nothing too insanely formal, nothing too uncomfortable, and nothing too bright or otherwise distinctive) Since then, whenever occasions come up where most people would feel they HAVE to buy a new dress, I can just revert back to my little occasion wear collection. You can dress things up or down with accessories and completely change up your look with makeup, hair, accessories etc. Developing this little collection early on has saved me so much in the past few years, any time a work event or wedding comes up I have something to wear. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BUY A NEW DRESS FOR EVERY OCCASION. I often see people selling their nice occasion wear after only 1 wear which i suppose makes financial sense in the short term but its a terrible decision in the long run. Generally they can only sell it for 50-80% of the original value, and then next time an event comes up, they have to go and buy something at the full price again

Affordable kitchen gadgets that you didn't know you needed: Rice Cooker (use it for beans, barley, and stock too), Stick Blender (no need for a full size blender if all you want is soup and smoothies), and a Salad Spinner.(Buy your greens by the head, wash it and dry it. Save big $$. Use the basket as a strainer and the whole contraption to dry off anything including delicate clothes.) Things you think you need but you don't: coffee maker(use a french press), gourmet mixer (a $20 hand mixer makes excellent egg whites and whipped cream, for everything else there is elbow grease) and a whole set of $$ knives (one $$ knife that fits your hand and keeps a good edge with a honing steel.)

Couple of things: keeping documentation printed and organized in folders is very normal and useful because, according to law, an original document is original only if it has the original signature. A scanned document is no longer original. 90 percent of documents in my binders and folders I actually MUST HAVE. Anything that CAN be scanned, like annual gas bill settlements, can actually be shredded and thrown away after a year anyway. Besides, all those Dropbox and Google Disk providers are third parties with zero responsibility... so you would have to make copies of copies of copies of those PDF files... Putting the documents in a folder is much more practical... As for the unnecessary food ingredients, they are not THAT expensive and if one often has people around and makes impromptu dinners, it saves a lot of energy.
@blah914

Right, so my signinficant other decided he was gonna make burgers for dinner. Sounds ok, right? Except he wanted to try something new. Nothing fancy. Two burgers ended up costing over $50. We could have gone to a nice restaurant and gotten the best burgers in town. He will literally spend $800 a month on food. Not special food just... food. He's hopeless. All the little thing he "just wants" and "just gonna try" adds up in a big way. I spend max $300 a month. I put my foot down with his spending a long time ago and we have separate food budgets for obvious reasons.

Our couches and dining table were actually free, we just needed to rent a van for a couple of hours to pick them up. Then over the years I’ve changed most items one by one, investing sometimes a little more money or energy in fixing/custom making beautiful pieces (I’m à Sunday DIY kind of person). After 4 years we’re almost at the place I want style-wise! It feels adulty, and I value everything so much more than if it was all matched. That would feel kind of soulless.

Actually gym equipment isn't expensive compared to a gym membership. Homegym's are far cheaper. It's like with cooking at home compared to eating out. It also really depends how you train and what your focus is and get the stuff you want and need only. If you want to do Zumba or something alike, then a DVD will do it. If you are into running, then get a running machine. If you are into bodybuilding, then get weight plates. Make sure to check enough online shops to compare, so you don't buy the first thing you see that might turn out expensive. Not only will you save a lot of cash with a proper homegym, compared to a gym, but also save time that you are not wasting going and coming to the gym. The time you save you can use to be productive in other ways. P.S. you can do save even more if you know how to make a DIY Equitment. As in the military abroad we (Soldiers and the families) use plastic bottles we fill with sand and put them in plastic bags, then tie the plastic bags with a rope to a wooden stick. Easy made barbells and they easy to leave behind or wrap up, instead always carrying heavy equitment. Same with tire flips that are popular now, came from the military. Just take old truck tires, you can find them for free or small fee at the car junk yard.

When my partner and I met and were struggling to live in the 2nd richest town in the U.S. we learned this. It's also a resort town where the population around Christmas swells to ~20,000 (up from the regular 6,000.) Wealthy people who *did not like the trim color of their new $280 jacket* their brother chose for them ended up in the thrift store!!! We found an almost brand new TV --still in the box) sitting in a condo parking lot next to the big trash can.

loved this video! some really good tips! I'm seeing a lot of "oh you have to be rich to find this useful and/or relatable" comments, and while i agree, i also feel like these kinds of videos are necessary, because i find that often it is the kids of middle/upper middle class that make this mistakes because they never knew how to keep a budget because their parents could and it was a different time and then they end up being the ones with bigger credit card debts, etc. People from lower income backgrounds grew up knowing that some of these things are not necessary and how to better stick to a budget, so of course this kind of advice doesn't apply to them. I agree that there needs to be more content for them, but it doesn't invalidate these kinds of videos.

I had to buy several things when I started cooking korean food. But I cook Korean food really often these says so I definitely use the ingredients quickly. And speaking of the food storage I had a special situation: a particularly unhygienic neighbor led to a roach infestation in my half of the building. So if I wanted my food to remain uncontaminated I had to buy food storage to keep the bugs and the treatments off my damn quinoa.

That's the way it works in the US also. You get season 1 for free but have to buy season 2, etc etc. Netflix is not terrific, but it's better than it used to be. I got rid of Netflix and have Amazon Prime, which includes Amazon Video. No one ever talks about the fact you can get local channels with an antenna. I got one for $6 off Amazon. It's a little square thing about 8" X 8", and it just hangs on the wall, and I get ABC, CBS, PBS, Fox, and some crap I dont watch.
@phantomkate6

Kathy Radford Prime Video is even worse than Netflix here in Canada (and if you're about to suggest Hulu, we don't even have that at all). Sounds fine for Americans, though. I used to use it when location-spoofing still worked.

Really at the very most all you gotta do is buy a projector for like a hundred bucks, point it at a blank wall or hung up bedsheet, then hook your laptop or game console up to it. Then you can play video games and stream shows on a ''screen" that can be as big or as small as you want it. Still totally optional, but if you want a bigger viewing surface it is a lot cheaper than most TVs.

surprisingly the useless "Bathroom for (nearly) every sleeping room" was not in the list, even when bathrooms are one of the most costly and single use rooms in the house/appartement. In most cultures parents share the bathrooms with their kids.
@waziotter
@waziotter 3 года назад
Wait, this is a thing in the US?! Even a upmarket house in the UK will only have one bathroom, with an additional toilet downstairs in case someone needs to drop the kids off at the pool while another family member is in the shower. VERY occasionally you will find an en-suite shower room off the main bedroom,but that is viewed as ridiculously extravagant.

Sittings rooms are often useful when guests come over, it's a place to be able to chat and hang out without having to go out of your way to make your bedroom more presentable. It's also useful if you need to talk business or something in your house. And also a great place to have the family wait when wanting to go on vacation (aka if you are ready, you wait in the sitting room so that it's easy to just go without having to wait outside in the cold/heat and everyone will be together so it's easier to get out quickly).

I still have my iPhone 5 (my first and only Apple product) that i purchased brand new in 2012. I recently have not been upgrading the software when there is a new ios rollout cos im concerned it will slow down the phone. My only gripe at this point after having the phone for over 5 yrs now is that the battery tends to drain so much faster now. And since i havent upgraded, my phone doesnt recognize some of the new emoticons. I can still do facebook on it. I can still do my online banking, monitor my investments, even traded stocks a few times before. The bottomline: it still does all the things i have set out for this phone to do when i bought it in 2012. Here's the most interesting part: today is January 2018. Last Christmas 2017, my dad had offered to give me an iPhone X as a present (the newest iPhone as of this writing) but i declined. Call me crazy but i said, i feel like i'm in a contest with myself in owning this phone for a while and i feel like i'm winning. So there...

I still have an iPhone 4s (!) from 2012! I will ride this thing until it dies or the lack of software support becomes too detrimental. And yes, that battery does drain fast now that it's in its old age, but as long as it gets the job done for what I want it to do, I'm sticking with it. Really the only reason I'm excited to one day get a newer phone is that the newer ones have much better cameras in them.
@chinitocutie
@chinitocutie 6 лет назад
thatjillgirl When u do decide to upgrade your phone, please dont fall for the new business model of carriers now which is equivalent to leading a phone. With at&t, it's called the Next plan. Other carriers have something equivalent but had another name for it. Just buy your phone in cash and then same as usual, own it for as long as possible!

chinitocutie I thought I was the only one, I have been using mine since 2011, and everybody have been on my case within a year saying I need a new one, no I don't. my phone does everything I want so why waste money, I will rather give the money to somebody that genuinely needs it instead of lining multi-billion dollar company's pocket. Also, I bought my phone cash and got sim only package with unlimited internet, local and national calls , texts and 2000mins mobile calls that I pay 'coffee' money for every month. People need to appraise their lives especially financial regularly, at least annually

Yay, a video where I'm already abiding by all the things. :D Well, sort of. I have a few more kitchen gadgets and odd ingredients than the average person, but I do actually cook a lot. Regarding the gym stuff, a suggestion and a caution. One piece of equipment you should get (if you don't have something makeshift in your house already) is a pull up bar. A good one that goes into wall studs, not a door hanger/breaker. Even people who do strictly bodyweight stuff need something to pull themselves up to. One item to never get, even if you find a great deal or they're free: adjustable dumbbells. Trust me, I've never experienced a set that didn't unscrew itself during normal use a pose a fall-on-your-foot-or-face risk. You're better off getting two or three pairs of the most common weights you'd use in the solid form, or better yet bands which take up practically no space, than screw around with those things.
