Daniel Barenboim | 5 Minutes On... Brahms - Piano Concerto No.1 (D minor)

Barenboim was inspired to create a new piano after playing Franz Liszt’s restored grand piano during a trip to Siena in September 2011. Struck by the vital differences in sound of an instrument constructed with straight, parallel strings rather than the diagonal crossed ones of a contemporary instrument, he set out to create a brand new instrument that combines the best of the old and the new and offers a real alternative for pianists and music-lovers in the 21st century.

My very first classic LP was around 1970,the Brahms piano concerto n.1.On the cover there was the picture of a young prodigee boy, named Daniel Baremboim.Now,52 years later the Maestro is still here, playing his piano, Brahms is still here,my enthusiasm is still here with a hint of nostalgia.Congratulations for the splendid carreer, from Milano.

Thank you Maestro for taking the initiative to use modern channels to reach out and introduce people to the endlessly wonderful world of classical music. Of course 5 minutes are not nearly enough to be able to talk satisfyingly about these masterpieces, but I understand and applaude your intention of kindling interest in people not too familiar with this music yet. Gracias!

I believe you because it happens to me too. Only tow concertos but Brahms wrote teo gigantic masterpieces. Not because of a big orchestra but for the structure of the music. The harmony the counterpoint the musical language. Brahms a great genius.

Also to me because before there this huge orchestral introduction very powerful that creates this climax, and then it's start slowly to do a decrescendo until that only the timpani do a simple rithym and then the piano comes with this beautiful and sad theme

I recall many years ago a TV series where a young Barenboim in turtleneck shirt explained Beethoven to a young audience. It had a huge impact on me, and helped to shape my understanding of music. Having Daniel back telling the youth of today what they can find in the classical repertoire and how it relates to all the music we love, no matter the genre, is a gift to be welcomed. And thus, more than a specific piece, I would love to hear you explain things such as musical impressionism, the genius of Bach or how Beethoven approached his composing. Thank you, Daniel, for the music.

Maestro, Brahms finished writing his Piano Concerto No. 1 in 1858. He was very young, about 25 years old. Interestingly, when you recorded it in 1967, you were also young and about 25 years old. :-) I really love your 1967 version. It has given lots of pleasure throughout the years. Many thanks.

M. Barenboim, thank you so much for these videos. You are an important pianist to me; I remember being 16 years old in the mid-80's, listening to your DG recordings of the Beethoven sonatas, especially the op.106 fugue, over and over and over. I have no request for pieces; maybe my request is for you to give us an insight into the piece we might not have had, even if we already know the piece. This is what Bernstein always managed to do. He showed us something new, even when it was Beethoven's 5th. Anyway, I will be listening!!!

I am sorry that Barenboim (or his editor!) has put a quote of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata in the introduction, (the "title page" so to speak), it is so weird, not a good idea. But otherwise the description of Brahms is so interesing, catching, informing, spot on the expressivity of the masterwork by Brahms.

Happy again!!! can't belive!!!! my favorite one (from all piano concertos)!!!!!:))))))))) the most impressive performing of it for me (but can't find whole recording here) was Yours, in Athens (theatre Odeon)...especially inspiring was harmony of second mov. and nature around...the air, sun light, sounds around....I felt something immortal that never changes...also the tragical suffer and straggle in 1and 3 mov which was very organic with the most significant place, where the fight of human being with fate is shown, from the ancient time....maybe with no hope and he's defeated , but never gives up....! I have listened and watched it on TV long ago, but still remember the power of this inspiration and catharsis... thank you...
