Hi, there, If you have or had gestational diabetes, I would love to know in the comments section below which of these common mistakes you've made. Were there any that I left out? Let me know. Looking forward to hearing from you.

I am failing with my numbers miserably and yes the dietician is having me load up on carbs, I advised her my numbers look worse than when I was eating without the extra carbs and all she keeps saying is oh you may not have gotten enough carbs the previous day 😡. I hate waking up to this everyday and don't know what to do because I can't get this under control and it feels like I'm eating all day on this new plan. She's telling me 45-60g of carbs for lunch and dinner. 15-30g for snacks in between and my numbers are through the roof. Can you name some of the carb veggies you recommend because I have been getting the carbs from the sources that raise sugars apparently.

I just got diagnosed with gestational diabetes two weeks ago and it was really hard for me! My whole pregnancy, I've been craving carbs. Muffins, cookies, bagels, pasta. Just everything I'm not supposed to have! It's been a really hard adjustment, but luckily my numbers have been in range since I've started testing!

This was the first i have heard about eating in a certain order! My stress level was through the roof from anxiety after meeting with the nutritionist. They wanted to limit everything. One seriving of protien, as much non starchy veggies as i wanted, but still limit it, limit fruit since it is a carb, limit carbs 30-45 per meal, 15-30 per snack and on top of it mix up the carbs, starch, dairy, and fruit. They can't all be the same carb for the meal/snack. Plus 1-2 servings of fat, plus water intake..and they didn't care about fiber. Document it all plus the 4 blood sugar checks 2 hrs after the first bite of food. Plus it should be less than 10 hrs of fasting from bedtime snack to breakfast. I told my MD that it was all too much and i had already started eating healthier about 1 month prior to being diagnosed with GD and i felt that i could control it on my own (i had been checking my levels for a week by the time i explained this to her). I was afraid i would be hungry if i was limiting all of my food to proper serving sizes. My example was that if i still felt hungry, i shouldn't feel guilty for eating an extra piece of grilled chicken. i didn't agree that i should limit my protein that much. Since my levels were good, she agreed that if i kept my sugars under control that i didn't have to go to the nutritionist anymore. 4 weeks later and i am still doing good and less stressed!

Thank you for your content. It’s unbelievable how misguided some information out there can be, even from dietitians who mean well! I managed my first GD pregnancy completely with advice like this. Now in my second, I don’t have GD but am still eating this way. I feel great and am 10lbs down in between pregnancies from original starting weight, without ever counting a single calorie.

Hi Dr, Travy. I love tip no. 5. Anot focus on the food you cannot eat. Focus on the b-food that you should eat. This is a good mindset for me not to be felt deprived of foods. Thank you so much

I don't have a bad attitude over the sweets. I have a bad attitude because I was already living healthy. Exercising and eating right. I don't like soda, candy, pasta and things like that. I only eat whole grains. If you're supposed to prevent it by being healthy then how did this happen? I've been good and get GD anyway? I don't understand it.

Genetics and 'advanced' maternal age is also a risk factor. Generally the older qe are at pregnancy, the higher the risk for it. Being pregnant itself puts the body in a state of relative insulin resistance so a risk factor or two can tip the scale to cause GDM.

More than half of women who have gestational diabetes do go on to develop diabetes. This is not the end of the world! When you’re not pregnant, it will be easier to control your blood glucoses, and there will be more options for medication if needed. If you are overweight, try to lose weight and exercise after the baby comes. This will lower your risk. Good luck!

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 28 weeks, I got on the diet they gave me and now my blood sugar keeps going higher.. my fasting levels were 90 now they are 140.. I will try to cut down on the bread.. how much should I limit my fruits? I am craving fruit so much..

Dorina, Glucoses really do rise as you get closer to delivery. It's frustrating, I know. Cutting back on bread and potatoes is a smart move. You can eat fruit, but stay away from fruit juices, which are more concentrated in sugars. Your best choices are berries - strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries. These are higher in fiber and lower in sugars than most other fruits. If you eat apples or pears, leave the skin on.

If I cut out the snacks how can I eat the recommended amount of carbs (180g/day)? I could do it with 4 meals of 45g carbs per meal or 3 of 60g but that would definitely increase my blood sugar...
@DrTracyPapa

There really is no upper limit for carbs. If you are eating plenty of protein and healthy fats, maintaining your weight, and your blood glucoses are controlled, then it sounds like you're doing it right!

...My thing is I love grapes and watermelon, on top of carb-heavy foods... I'm trying to make my last couple months in Prego-land count so I can try to avoid a c- section. Is it too late for me? It's definitely not too late to make a difference. If you have gestational diabetes, you have to make up your mind to manage your carbohydrates well. If you are checking your blood sugars and they are normal, you have more latitude to include more fruit and starchy foods in your diet. On the other hand, if your blood sugars are elevated, or if you are gaining weight quickly, you have to make a plan. What usually works well is a diet plentiful in protein, fiber, and healthy fats, with fruit and carb-rich foods in smaller amounts, eaten at the end of your meal.

How much cow milk can be consumed while on GD?
@DrTracyPapa
@DrTracyPapa 2 года назад
It varies from person to person. Experiment with 1 cup at a time and see how your glucoses do.
