The immortal John Hancock! I want to make it clear to you first and foremost that I like every video you've made that I've seen so far. The content premise basically guarantees positive likes for many reasons, but that's not why I'm commenting you 😅 Please 🙏 consider the following and no I'm not being sarcastic or insulting (text comment interpretation can go anywhichway) Okay so if you're actually reading and hopefully you are and don't write me off as some online toxic offender etc, but when watching your video and enjoying it moderately I couldn't keep from noticing the very significant and quite numerous times you repeated your exact dialogue. Not just in the video, a number of them, essentially all the ones in this series I've seen do far, have you repeating yourself and frequently too. In this video during the "the crow: city of angles" you listed off the various issues with the game at the beginning of the review then you literally repeat every single complaint again when the game screen transition to the next scene. Of course I don't know your personal methodology when making these but as honest advice for purely wanting to help raise quality, I think you should consider writing the videos script out first if you're not doing do already, it seems like you're just saying whatever you recollect from previously playthroughz. If you infact, already do script it out first then I highly recommend using a thesaurus which is immensely helpful. Once again, hopefully you don't take thus the wrong way and I look forward to future content. I just think there's a considerable amount of interest and enjoyability yet to be had from the same content with thus minor addition. However, if you have no interest in charging anything whatsoever, I completely respect that decision. Thank you for your time and efforts.

The second movie isn’t bad. The rest go down hill in a hurry. Now, on the topic of Branden Lee’s death and the series continuing; the series was written as a way for the author to cope with the death of his young son. Dealing with loss is a MAJOR theme of the work, so I honestly don’t see a huge problem with making more movies based on the graphic novels.

Mid 2000s was a good era for football games as both franchises were critically and commercially successful. 2K, however, was gaining ground selling more every year and had established itself as the only real worthy alternative to Madden. “Destroyed” is a strong word, but EA was plenty worried and tired of losing cash and mindshare to competitors. Battle Monsters was by developer Scarab, who's first game was called Survival Arts, made in 1993 for the arcades which was a poor attempt at trying to mimic Mortal Kombat using live action digitized models in a 2D fighting game. Then two years later they would make Battle Monsters for the Sega Saturn which as shown was yet another attempt at cashing in on the MK craze with them using 2D digitized live actors in a fighting game. Then a year later, made the PS1 exclusive fighter Killing Zone, which had a very similar motif, almost making Battle Monsters an indirect prequel of sorts. Like Death Mask, Killing Zone even had its own Frankenstein Monster named Vilken. Killing Zone was also never praised for being good but it didn't use digitized sprites like Battle Monsters did as it actually used 3D character models, so I'm not sure why Scarab opted to make the change from 2D pixelated digitized live action sprites; maybe it was to help with the fact the Saturn wasn't as good at 3D modeling as the PS1 was? But its not like Killing Zone was taking full advantage of the PS1 3D hardware either since the game wasn't all that great and the characters did not move in a 3D plane anyway. But then in 1997, Scarab's later Saturn fighting game inclusions: All Japan Pro Wrestling Featuring Virtual in 1997 (which also got an arcade port two months later) and that was a pretty good 3D wrestling game which showed they could really make use of the 3D tech on the Sega Saturn despite the known drawbacks the Saturn had with it compares to the PS1. The game later on got two sequels for the Sega Dreamcast titled Giant Gram: All Japan Pro Wrestling 2 (and 3) as well as the Dreamcast port of Fighting Vipers 2. So either they improved greatly or got newer staff.

I like Tank controls. They allow the devs to force you to see a certain perspective. Much like how a movie sets a scene, tank allows you to move seamlessly between scenes. Devs could create tension with off screen enemies, or being scared of what’s ahead. Or feeling disoriented as scenes switch. But tank keeps you oriented. There’s something compelling about the devs forcing you to experience the environments from a fixed perspective. The environmental storytelling can be amazing. And the tension and disorientation can also really work well for some titles. The first 3 Resident Evil, and first 2 Silent Hill, are games I couldn’t imagine playing in full 3D. They’d be unrecognizable, playing so differently.

So much of the game is trial, error, and randomization. Take for example the REWARS you get for beating the first boss. Normally you get this neat little lamp which makes it easier to see in a few darker places. Then you have the super lamp that shines even brighter making it super easy to explore darker places, but also makes it easier for enemies to find and attack you. But then you have the THIRD Lamp... a Cursed lamp of Darkness. The lamp covers you in darkness making it harder for you to see, but its curse prevents you from changing any equipment until you purify it. But hilariously, this lamp also makes it harder for Monsters to see you letting you avoid most anything. I know the game has some issues, its camera can be pretty silly and many parts of the game feel unfinished. [The minecart, for example, says it has a weight limit... but it really doesn't.. ] Depending on your difficulty settings alot can change such as starting with a full map, or a completely blank one. The graphics look a bit messy by today's standards but it was one of the few games that showed your equipment on your character. They key difficulty in the game however, and a major source of frustration is the fact nothing starts off identified or even really examinable. The only way to know what something is, is to use it.

100% Correct I absolutely LOVED Virtual Hydlide as a kid. For the reviewer to claim it's "one of the WORST games on Saturn" is a complete joke. Sure it has lots of problems that could have been ironed out before release, but for it's time, going from playing the SNES to being able to play a game like this was truly mind blowing. I spent at least 15 + hours enjoying the game. I doubt he would have been shitting on this game if this was 1998 and he was playing it for the first time.

John NFL97 took the name and logo of Sega Sports and thrashed it. Passing and running doesn't comply with known physics. The Saturn launched in North America without a football game and I wonder who thought that was a good idea.

Scary that someone thought the map of the graveyard area of Virtual Hydlide needed to be a copy and paste of a level from E.T. for Atari.

Maybe this is a stupid question but why the "immortal" John Hancock? I've wondered since first learning about you years and years ago from metal jesus. Love the videos, you are definitely a legend if not immortal.

Drunken Master Paul came up with the name for me when visiting my game room. I decided to use it to differentiate me from John Hancock insurance which was already on RU-vid.

I have that NHL game and I don't remember it being that bad, though to be fair it's probably been over 20 years since I last played it lol. I was also a sucker for hockey games back then and could enjoy pretty much any of them, so it was most likely the hockey fan in me that made it seem like it wasn't that bad. Seeing the name Sergei Fedorov brings back some memories too, he along with Steve Yzerman were probably my favorite players growing up.

John, what I'm about to say is exactly why showing off even the horrible games is a good idea. Some may be interested in trying them out anyway, and what does it hurt to do so? Now, I know this is going to sound crazy, but that The Crow game really appeals to me despite it's awfulness. The thing is that I love beat-em-ups and adventure games, and this game combines the two. Also, the graphics look great for the time! So even if it's terrible, how can I say no to trying it out? Don't worry, I'll play it through emulation first, and if I actually decide to buy it I'll be sure it's super cheap! Hit detection looks horrendously bad, but I can get used to the tank controls thanks to having much experience playing the PS1 Resident Evil games as well as Silent Hill. And no, I don't expect to enjoy the game much at all, but who knows? Maybe I'll be shocked and actually like it! But I'm mostly just curious. Also curious about that Hulk game. Thanks, John!

Virtual Hydlide is a very good game and I had finished it before on a PAL Saturn. It obviously uses only one cpu (as with most Saturn games due to difficult programming),if it was proper coded, the framerate would be normal.

I wish I could remember the name of an NBA basketball game I had. It played like NBA Jam kinda, but the load times were absolutely the worst I've ever experienced in any game over the decades. It was so bad that any enjoyment that could be squeezed out from the actual game play wasn't worth it by a long shot. I'm pretty sure I eventually sold or traded it away.

Fighting games with bad controls and camera angles are terrible to play. I still love the digitized actors in Battle Monsters. It's just beautiful looking to me

I am one of the Virtual Hydlide fans. I liked the digitized graphics, the pseudo open world, the general weirdness. Better experience with an emulator as you can customize the controls for a more modern control scheme with twin stick movement and strafing.

One of the first fistfights I ever got into was in fifth or sixth grade , can’t remember exactly which, but it was over the Saturn. I loved sega and asked for a Saturn for my birthday and this kid in my class kept shitting on it saying PlayStation was better lol. We threw down. Even 5hough the ps1 did go on to be far more successful and I did end up getting one years later, I still have a special place in my heart for the Saturn.
