It's 2024 and Officials Institute (OI) is back with new 5 Play Challenge videos. Each video will highlight five plays involving the every officials favorite topic, Block/Charge. You get a real time, full speed version to start off, with a declaration of the ruling by the original officials. Then we zoom in and slow it down for a second look. Lastly we slowly analyze the play even closer and determine what the ruling should have been. Remember, these plays are block/charge plays and any other rule that may be noticed should be ignored. And, as always these video are dedicated to educating officials on the rules of basketball.
The OI 5 play challenge is not set up to explain the rule in detail but will give reference to certain rules as the final analysis is given. This is done to provide context to the decision making process of how we should get to the proper ruling in the play. Every block charge video we show in this segment is clipped from actual footage of high school basketball games, involving high school athletes. The goal is to provide as much possible information to assist the way we see these types of plays in the future. The more plays we see, with detailed explanation, the better we will get at identifying the correct ruling more consistently.
0:00 - Intro
0:28 - Play #1 - Defender gets hit by the ball handler at the top of the three point line and a player control foul was called. Watch to see what the correct ruling is.
2:02 - Play #2 - No call on this crash at the basket. Were the officials right to pass on this contact?
3:12 - Play #3 - Fast break transition ends with a block call by the Center Official. What do you think?
4:34 - Play #4 - Drive down the lane and bodies on the floor. No foul is called.
5:45 - Play #5 - Double whistle on this play with the Trail calling a charge foul. Watch and see what the correct call is.
7:00 - Thanks for taking the 5 Play Challenge.
Watching video clips is a good way to hone your basketball officiating skills and retain your learning for future use. We believe the most effective way to assist in building a correct understanding of rules and how to apply them is by watching videos with annotation, diagrams and shading to highlight key teaching points. Taking away and remembering specifics on a rule is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand.
The Officials Institute, and the 5 Play Challenge segment, creates videos in a fun and interesting way to test your ability to properly recognize specific plays, but don't leave you guessing about whether there was a foul, violation or not. Even though we cannot officiate in slow motion or freeze frames, by watching and reviewing video video in this fashion, we are able to "retrain our brain" so we can start seeing plays more accurately when we do see them in real time and increase our ability to get the call right.

Almost a "blarge" on play #5. Lead started (but never completed) his signal. Is that the deciding factor? If a "blarge," I believe we assess both fouls and go POI. Great content. Thanks.

The first foul is very clear and it’s shocking how incompetent the ref is
