Today we are talking about five compression mixing tips! These aren't the most straightforward ways that we use compression. For some of you they may seem that way but these are the more interesting things you can do with the compressor!
1. Side Chain the guitar to the lead vocal 1:37
2. Use a compressor to sculpt the room mics 4:42
3. Set up your compressor like a transient designer 6:47
4. Side chain overhead mics to the main snare track 11:12
5. Duplicate the track and nudge it backward to setup “look ahead” compression 13:44

I'm the first to make mistakes. It is the hard way to learn. I have so much respect for your work, so, please, never say again that you're not an expert. By the way, do you have any trick to raise the volume of gosth notes on a snare drum without have to much compression on the hard beat? I mean without automations or editing? I've found a way that i would like to share. Thanks

This was much harder to do back in the day w/outboard gear connected via side-chain w/cables… back to ADAT tape or hard disk recorders . I need to start using side-chaining more in my DAW super quick & easy to do. Btw are you using those iLoud monitors & how do they stand up? Thanks Warren.

Brilliant tips Warren! Thank you so much ! Tip 2 is one of the best ways I've found to control mic bleed. The only way that is better than this is using the de-bleed feature in Izotope RX. But if you don't have access to that, the compressor method is a good option :).

There's another very easy way of mixing a vocalist and lead guitarist together, which is just using the same room reverb on both, but give the guitar a bigger room size so it sits more in the back, while the vocal sits more in the front

Side chain overhead mics to the main snare... wow.. WHY did I not think of that before? I always hate the influence of the snare on the overheads when we're recording with the band in our practice room.... It determines the sound too much for me. Great tips again Warren (all of them of course :)). Thanks! I did once side chain the bass guitar to the kick drum track because the bass took too much "space" of the kick and I did not want to EQ anymore to make room for eachother. So the kick controlled the volume of the bass guitar. Worked fine actually :)

I must say that you are absolutely spectacular for sharing this great videos. From saturation, to delay, to reverb, now compression. Warren, can you make a voice using an mp3 beat with an artist singing over it. I always have artists come to my home studio and say they have their beat (mp3 file) and they want to sing over it so I should record them after which I will mix and master it. My challenge has always being with trying to make it sit properly in the mix.
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 6 лет назад
That's a wonderful question Tammy! Yes, typically when you have an already mixed and mastered instrumental that you are singing over it is difficult to make that work with an overdubbed vocal! You'll have to compress the vocal very heavily and reduce it's dynamic range so it feels great against the two track you're working over! I hope that helps?

That lookahead compressor trick is gonna change a lot for me. I know quite a few tracks on an upcoming album I'm engineering for that will need that. Also I find it interesting that when you use the stock Avid compressor it doesn't make Pro Tools slow to a crawl like it does for me, no other plugin does that... my mac must be getting outdated. Also, you forgot to enable the sidechain button on the Avid compressor, that almost cost me an exam in audio school once!

I need some help. I love all of these videos when the vocals are already recorded and the post processing info is great, but I am having some issues getting there. How do you set up the gain on the mic vs. the gain on the compressor? And do I want to use something like an 1176 if it has a lot of character or something like ableton's stock compressor? I want to know the steps to get to an equal leveling of a dynamic vocal take that doesnt sound compressed all to hell when it hits hard, and doesnt raise the high end so much it sounds weird? (aka the audio file looking consistent in peaks and valleys) How do you set all the faders so that when you need to raise how loud the vocal is, you're not just pushing that one fader up? Like when you adjust gain do you increase the audio file size, or the fader, or the gain on the compressor? What are you guy's tricks? I have a TLM 102, apollo twin, 1176 and la a2 Uad plugins.

On the CLA-2A, what does the Analog 50Hz/60Hz/Off do? And what's the differance in result between 50Hz and 60Hz? i would obviously be biased towards 50Hz, PAL for the win.

Cheers Warren, no problem, after all these years there are still times moving knobs and realise they are disengaged :-)

Not clear what your doing with the ducking. Did you put a compressor on a insert or send of the guitar track? I assume a insert? If its on a insert do you put it in the signal path after or before your other plug ins? I assume before the other plug ins? The vocal output is then sent to a vocal ducking track?
