Many stock plugins, at least the ones I use, which are the delays, the compressor, the EQ the DeEsser, the reverb, are fantastic! Avid’s reverb, the plate setting is a fantastic sounding plate. It’s kind of a secret weapon! Do you know how many people I know that when they’re using Pro Tools like the stock plate? It’s really popular. And if you’re using side chain compression on it, it can get even better still!
I think the reason why I try to push using stock plugins at all is because, I want to encourage you to make music!
My job is to help you and mentor you in the best possible way I can. I’m not one of the channels going “You’re doing it wrong!” That’s not my job. I’m not telling you a bunch of bologna because I’m looking at the waveforms and saying “Look it’s out of phase!” What does it sound like? Listen, don’t look at the music.
With all that in mind it I feel it is my responsibility to encourage you, not to tell you off! I make mistakes every single day of my life. I’ve done videos where I’ve made mistakes! I will joke about it and I will wear it. It doesn’t bother me because that’s how people grow. We make mistakes.

After I bought all of the popular third party plug-ins, I realized that by combining two or three stock plug-ins together, I could get the same or similar results. It was really a matter of learning EQ, Compression, Saturation, Reverb and Delay before I could apply the different mixing techniques to get a good mix. Not necessarily the plug-ins. Thanks!

As Warren says, the best plug-in in the world is a good recording. Stock plug-ins work very well on good recordings. 3rd party plug-ins mostly save time. My mixes didn't start to sound good until I started recording good performances with good sound selections. Now I'm using both stock and 3rd party plug-ins that I understand and know how to use very well.

You can watch RU-vid and surf forums all day and gather data, but you only gather experience by doing! Getting better comes from listening critically to what you've produced, played, etc. What was good about it, what could use improvement? The tough part is getting the "ears"/experience to know the what, where, and how to improve the results. Especially at the beginning when you don't know where to start or what to fix first. Getting some one-on-one, professional, critique and feedback is well worth it. One tailored, private lesson is worth 100s of hours of trying to figure it out yourself in the beginning.

Possibly one of your best tutorials, even over all the hands-on technique stuff. I think the best argument for stock plug-ins is the ability to open the session up on other systems. Yes, how can you even think of final mixing a song before the vocals are done? Yes, give the vocalist anything and everything they need to feel comfortable. I have audio feeds to little mixing stations so they can dial up their own balance of instruments. I had one guy who was only able to sing while he was driving in his car. I recorded him sitting in a cushy bucket-seat chair and placed a large round object the size of a steering wheel in his hands, dropped a mic in front of his face and away we went!

Hi Warren, another great video! You spoke briefly of templates in this video. Would you consider doing a short video on basic starting point templates for guitar, bass guitar, kick, and snare? You have separate videos posted on how to eq bass, and drums, etc....but I would love to see a video covering the major rock instruments all in one video. I totally agree with what you said where there is really no magic template, because every song is different...but it would be extremely helpful to have a video that goes over basic starting points for EQ for the standard rock instruments. Thanks again for sharing your experience!

Great point about the stock plugins. I came to Ableton Live 9 having built my abilities with other sequencers, bringing my 3rd-party plugins with me, and I could kick myself for how long it took me to realise how many fantastic effects and features were just sitting there under my (turned-up) nose. Everything stock looked grey and utilitarian to me, and I just ignored it in favour of other things with high price tags, which is ridiculous given that I got going in the first place with the simplest stock plugins and equipment. When I realised my mistake, I dedicated weeks to going back through everything, watching RU-vid videos about them, and I learned more than I had in years. Hopefully, with Live 10 nobody makes that error again, given that it's telegraphing the quality of its stock suite now. And of course, every sequencer has its own secret weapons. Seconded about Klanghelm, too - can't recommend them enough!

Thanks for the video advice Warren! Soon, I will be uploading a RU-vid video on Rob Chapman and Rabea Massaad of Dorje and Chapman Guitars recorded with Rob Chapman’s permission at the Guitar Center in New York City. I used the iPhone 7 for video recording at 1080p/60fps while connected to the Zoom H4N Recorder for Audio Preamplification at 96kHz 24-bit stereo sound. The sound is awesome and clear. I could hear clear vocals and clear guitar tones from the Chapman Electric Guitars. The video is clear as well but not perfect since the iPhone was recording the video automatically. I could see the difference in the white balance, autofocus, and EV levels but the sound recording made a big difference since the iPhone builtin microphones are not studio quality. Cheers, Flood!

Man, you only realize the limitations of modern video frame rates when you see someone wearing a shirt like that on said video. Trippy af. Great videos, btw. I love your insight and how straightforward, knowledgeable (and yet humble when called for), and honest your videos are (and that little Bowie thing I always see in the background - "inspiration" I'd like to think). But saying all of that is boring, so of course it took the shirt to get me to comment. heh.

My favourite plugins modelled on hardware from waves are seriously resource intensive and force me to work in different ways to get from A to B. I would love to be able to drop an active instance of scheps 73 freely on as many tracks as i like. But i can usually load about 5 instances before noticing trouble on the horizon... However with stock plugins i can load so many instances that i don't even need to think about it. This is where bus channels for certain things and sometimes bouncing midi to audio has come into play in my case. :)

I goof things up, and really can't hide most times I goof something up. It's a hard thing to get used to, but I really had no choice a few years back. I had to figure out a new way of interacting with people so that they would let me acquire new skills and methods the only way I could: with practice. So now every little flub is not so mortifying to me. I usually want to rectify it as soon as possible though. 😁 It's like falling down.

It's like asking, should you use a particular type of phone to make calls. Use whatever is available that gets the job done. I never use stock plugins only because I use several DAWs and I'd rather use one type of eq, comp, limiter, etc., in all my projects regardless of the DAW. I can afford it, so I use paid plugins, but for budget-conscious individuals that aren't fortunate enough to afford much, free ones are also a good option for the same reason.

Warren - the question on the vocals with reverb / delay etc. they may have meant to not put it/ allow it on the Tape/recording/wave file - not the vocalist head phones or what he/she wants to hear ?

reverb or delay WILL affect the way the singer sings and that's the point...their voice will likely sound clearer to them and more inspiring and likely lead them to sing better, plus the final mix is going to have reverb so they should sing in a way that makes the reverb sound good. If you're singing in a genre that is going to use a LOT of auto-tune on the vocals, it may be good to hear how the pitch correction will affect your vocals as you record... kind of like mixing INTO your bus compressor and not just slapping it one to what you think is your finished mix

Thank you so much for making such awesome videos! It is really inspiring. Sometimes I get a bit lost in the world of mixing with plugins and technic. It is good to go back to the basics with a mix. It is very tempting to load so many plugins on one track but in the end it doesn't sound any good at all. Than I disable them all and start from scratch again. Any tips to prevent overdoing plugins on a group bus or a single track?
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 6 лет назад
Hi Martijin, I agree 100%! We've all been guilty of that! The biggest issue for me is not how many plug ins, but how drastic each move is. By that I'm suggesting that if you were to boost a huge amount, then cut similar frequencies etc several times you might be best just pulling everything off and seeing what you have without so many moves. I hop that helps?

Hi Warren, thank you for this video. I have become overwhelmed by the vast amount of plug-ins that promise to help make my mixes more "professional." . The stock "Reaper" plug-ins have been my staple and I have also added the Focusrite Eq and Comp plugins that came with my Focusrite 2i2. I also just found the forum in PLAPS that has helped me make some sense of the sea of plug-ins.
@revolutronic
@revolutronic 6 лет назад
in contrast to a lot of other DAWs, reaper comes with EVERYTHING! how many times did i search and find an expensive plugin only to realise that reaper has a better one already built in. i just wish they had GUIs sometimes but you are right the sheer amount these days is overwhelming.

great advice after a 2 year runaround trying all the plugins, yes some sound clear some sound coloured, the stock ones have gems, ive spent countless hours with all the guitar stuff no names, but the cubase stock old blackmore amp vst has a vibe that beats them all, hidden away because some think expensive plugin is better, not the case, back to the song back to the daw, happy days, i dont think hendrix worried kramer was multi tracking and bouncing loosing quality its vibe man

Hi John, thanks for the marvellous comment! Interestingly enough though, many of the most expensive plug ins are of course emulations of pieces of equipment Mr Kramer would have used with Jimi!

Love the points being made in this video. On the subject of experimenting - and I'm sure you've answered this many times before - how much would you experiment in the engineering stage? Say you had a band session coming up, and had a technique you were wanting to try; would you try that technique in the session, or save it for when you can bring in a drummer or whatever to experiment in your off time?
@Producelikeapro

I LOVE experimenting to create unique sounds! It's all about balance and knowing when a sound might be supportive or featured!

Great stuff, as always, WH. Do you have any advice for recording and mixing harmonica, especially amplified harmonica? (I'm guessing you've recorded some of Steven Tyler's harp playing.) PS Give us more Ace stories!

Hi Warren. Do you use the something like the Waves WLM Plus when you're mixing the audio for your videos to get it at youtube's standard loudness level? Do you have any preferred settings or even presets you could share? Also, could you do something like a "top 5 session management tips" or a video on how to keep up your studio skills when you're not working? I've just got an internship in a recording studio after not working for a while, and it's painful to realise how out of practice I am!

Hi Warren! Could you please tell us what record labels look for in a band(in general)? I'm currently 17 and I want to write a heavy metal/hard rock album to then get a band and get signed but I'm not really sure about all the details... Cheers from Winnipeg!

Warren! Another great episode! For the musicians among us- does the quality of the recording matter if it's a good song? I mean, obviously for radio it has to be of a certain quality/standard, but other than that does it matter?
@cl9826
@cl9826 6 лет назад
Absolutely. I would think it wouldn't matter if it's a bad song.

my wife little sister gave me a origional beatles 1969 reocrd of a live preformance in gernamy. it was a really rare record but when i recorded it ind played it it was ver low in quality. i bet they didnt have a shitload to work with but it goes to show in 1969 they were tyring to acomlish the same shit were are now at our o pace
@DaveChips
@DaveChips 6 лет назад
To be honest... It really depends on a song to song basis and on personal emotions. Back in the day I heard some super badly recorded song from Frank Marino wich I listened when I went thru some hard times. For me that song will always be welcomed regardless on fidelity. Music is very subjective subject.
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 6 лет назад
A great song is a great song! So technically the recording 'quality' shouldn't matter. However a terribly recording could be detrimental, so our job is to capture a preference in the best way we can!

Great video bro but i hv a big problem i am using a pro tools 10 i mix one song with stock plugins and it cm out great every one is using wave so i went and get me a copy and i try mixing a song but for some reasons i keep getting a CPU overload error so i think it was my mixer firewire i order a new one.... receive it today thinking all is well put on my digi 003 mixer my macbook pro 2015 open pro tools 10 and when i hit the play button guess what error pop up i was hurt lol i really need ur help do u think its the waves plugging making me get the CPU error?
@ReeWebster
@ReeWebster 4 года назад
Was always under the impression stock plus use less CPU. And many are just as good, if not better than some third party stuff. I could roughly narrow it down to logic's stock comp and eq on almost everything, fab filter for specific surgical stuff, waves non-endorsement for clean, waves endorsed CLA/SSL/Pultec/etc for colour. There's obviously way more to that, but isn't there always lol.

I have a quick question, for example, pro tools 3-7 eq over time I have saved presets for one reason or another so now I have a couple of hundred presets saved, How do I clear them out?

maybe give them a choice to leave and watch what they´ll do? will not work in a one room flat with a marshall wall

I used to have a combo amp on pretty low settings because I lived with my parents, now they're renting me out the bottom floor of the house and I'm getting a tube amp to boot. The problem was that they were all scared of even the very quiet combo and always ran away when I played. They calmed down when I put my headphones on though.
@revolutronic
@revolutronic 6 лет назад
ah ok , so they really don´t like it. is there a chance for them to chill at your parents or in the garden while recoding? or maybe build a soundproof amp/drumroom?
@aleksanderdjuran8010
@aleksanderdjuran8010 6 лет назад
I was thinking about letting them into my parents place, but that's only a temporary solution. Im thinking of building an isolation cab or putting the one I have into a closet and recording that way, but that's just off the top of my head. Another thing I can't stand is when I'm in the recording room, my dog scratches the door and you can just about hear it in the recording. Solutions have been elusive to say the least.

WARREN ! Amazing as usual. Question. Your thoughts on Event brand bi amplified near field monitors? also. Maybe you could do a decent length video on reel to reel sound on sound old school tape delay. And the people that invented the concept and used it early on with rockabilly and sun records , how it’s used as far as explaining the signal chain and hook up As well as the pros and cons Also digital delay VS analogue pros and cons diff And maybe then use it in your studio on some mixes to add context for usage Don’t forget the major influence reggae dub in the early to late 1970’s with their usage of tape Delay dubbing effect I don’t find there are many good examples of a true documentary level video of the history and usage You and Pensado need to get a video together also ! Cheers

I find that about 3 fab filter plugins can slow my system down as much as an entire mix full of logic plugins...and it sucks because they are so powerful and flexible. Pro Q-3 is great, but am I really lacking anything with logic's EQ (except the dynamic compression)...for simple tasks, I find it easiest to go for what I know
