#quit #quilting #sewing #2024 I am making this year the best it can be by purging things that don't add to my happiness! Creators to Watch: @theidiotquilter @sleigharts @QuiltMeetsWorld @MPQS
Way to go Stephanie. I needed this video. It's time to take back control of what really gives me joy, and stop letting others rob me of my joy. There are things I need to quit that take up time I can be quilting. I'm with you girl❤
I watched sewbecca, she called it quilt bankruptcy. If it didn’t bring her joy, she gave it away, donated it etc. Good for you and can’t wait to see what you have in store for us.
I never did get into the box subscriptions for two reasons, one the cost and two, someone else is picking out your fabric. The concept of getting a present in the mail each month is great. Quilting is expensive, and I need to use my money wisely.
I am curious about what makes a quilt pattern. There is a thing called simultaneous creation where people have the same idea at the same time. Then, there’s me who will think I’ve invented something only to find it’s already been invented. From what I can see… you can consider yourself a quilt pattern creator even if the same design has been put out by others. In the flavor of nothing new under the sun …. Aren’t we just recycling existing blocks and changing color schemes etc? Other than the appliqué picture blocks, I feel like I see the same blocks. And yet… your newest candy quilt!!!! OMG I’m in love. I make baby quilts black and white with pops of color and this pattern is PERFECT!!!
I loved watching you become so successful 😊.. I am quiting some things this year too... subscription boxes are one and taking orders for quilts is another...I want to make what I want to make, not deal with people 😂. If people want to buy a quilt from me it will be one I made that made me happy...I know that sounds selfish but I am retired and I don't want to feel like I am at work😂...I quilt to have fun and enjoy the process
I fully agree with that! You should make what makes you happy and if someone likes it enough, they can purchase that one. Custom orders can get taxing as they don't allow you to be creative. And your quilts are so beautiful...people should be flocking to what you already make!
Good for you to move on from what isn't bringing you joy. You are definitely ready to be at the next level of quilting creativity. We are all looking forward to what is to come from your talents.
Good for you Stephanie, I use to get the mystery quilt from Cotton Cuts. I bought all the fabric up front, I'm in Canada. It cost me $800.00 Then they refused to send me the pattern each month that was to be emailed. They said Thanks for your money. What a lovely company! I agree with you that there are many companies out there that just want your services and your money. Thank you for your video.
Oh wow! I am so sorry that you experienced that with Cotton Cuts. I have lost all respect for them for so many reasons and this is just another example of why. Hugs and here's to better quilting experiences for you in the future!
I’m right where you are. This year is my year to Swedish Death Cleaning. I am using what I have first and only doing intentional buying. So nice to hear you putting yourself first. ❤. Life is just so short. We all need to focus on what brings us joy. And yes…it is okay to discard what doesn’t bring you joy.
I made my 1st Kaleidoscope quilt & one of the 12 blocks was a wedge from different areas & not 6 stacked like the other 11. I tell everyone I ran out of fabric but instead of saying it's a mistake I say it was a signature move. LOL. I truly love it & why not, it's my 1st. Thx for the school of hard knocks. You make alot of sense to us quilters.
Yes!!! Way to go Stephanie!! Do what gives you joy and happiness. It's not right for companies to take advantage of you, so you are so strong and no longer letting them walk on you. So proud of you, you are amazing. You have taught me so much, my quilting skills have gotten much better because of your help, thank you. You have inspired me to take on a quilt that might be a challenge, you walked me thru those difficult quilts, thank you. I am just one of your close to 20,000 faithful followers. We love you Stephanie, this is going to be an amazing year for all of us!!
Most excellent, Stephanie! I think you are so wise in the decisions you have made this new year. I had no idea you did sample sewing, and ghost pattern writing ( I didn’t even know that was a thing). You are one of the most accomplished quilters that I have seen on RU-vid and you should have your name at the bottom of quilt patterns that make it to market so to speak. I enjoy crafting as well as quilting, but I tend to go in 100% to the exclusion of my other joys. I think this year I am going to spend time doing whatever hobby is calling my name at the time and not feel guilty if I’m not sitting at the sewing machine every day. Thanks for the video !
Empowering yourself year. Excellent. You’re very creative and knowledgeable. Time to show your true self. Can’t wait to see your patterns You go girl!!!!
Good decisions……..There is nothing more rewarding than working for yourself, especially when you are very talented, you WILL BE very successful…God bless you!🥰
Good for you Steph! I totally got shafted on the ghost writing. No more! I can relate to all of your comments on this video. I wish you a very fruitful and joyful 2024 ❤
Thank you, Stephanie, for your insights on why you're initiating these changes. I'm looking forward to seeing 'Rock Candy'! And remember, 'Don't make a fuss!'
Good for you. Be yourself abd build your own business up. I quilt sew sampler a few years ago, just to much stuff i did not need. Love blades, fabric and rulers. Nothing more. I tried BOM, one you mentioned. Colors were great but alot of the fabric was not the quilting fabric i thought they should be putting out in BOM. I do like one lady who outs out subscription box of fabrics but it’s a bit pricey.so i hold off and just watch her unboxings. I think you are busy enough and can niw choose to built your own brand. Good luck 2024❤
Good for you. They are some youtube quilters that I used to enjoy, but now I feel their under pressure to promote STUFF that isn't quilt related. If someone points out a mistake to you say, I did that on PURPOSE to show that life isn't perfect.
Thank you, Stephanie! Many of us needed this and are thankful for you being real honest and sharing. People (companies) will take advantage when they know you've got something positive going. You are appreciated and it's good that you are taking back your time to focus on what's important to you. Thank you!
Bravo! Hooray! I’m so proud of you! I’m in A BOM that I hate-and with all the stash, kits, patterns, etc that I have, I’m wondering why I’m Spending time on it, especially since I’m getting older, the hands are giving out, and so on! Also-yay for you concentrating on your own designs! You’re fantastic, a great artist, and I’m glad you will concentrate on furthering what you love and your career. One more thing: As the children get older, the more activities that they are in limits time. You’re a great mom and I know that you realize that’s the most important thing. Love you! 💞
Although I do not do New Year resolutions I did commit to taking the month of January to get my stash and sewing room under control. I have a lot of fabric and kits that I no longer want or need since 2019 when I first started quilting. Not to mention the additional side projects such as Cricut, Embroidery Machine, and Accuquilt I have acquired along the way. All connected to quilting but require space and additional accessories and supplies. I have also downsized the subscription boxes to 2 (FWFS is a keeper). I will continue to review the project boxes but decide at that time if I really need that box. Im happy that you are moving forward!
I just found you a few months ago; best thing that ever happened! I"m so glad you've decided to give up those 5 things! I can't wait to see all your new patterns that we can get to support you. In the beginning of last November I started going through fabrics I had bought years ago and gave it to a prior work sister. She was so excited! I also started goin g through patterns I had collected; free on sites and wasted paper and ink on because I thought I'd make it one day. Going through them I found that they didn't bring me JOY! I've decided to stop doing that. I'm proud of you Stephanie! Your 2024 is looking amazing and I'm sure it will be filled with JOY!!!
For the new year I donated a boatload of fabric that sat for a long time or just didn’t enjoy. Now my fabric can breathe and I can see it. I also spent eight hours cleaning up my sewing space. We are both getting a fresh start. Stephanie I am looking forward to seeing your work in the new year. I kind of dropped off your channel the last few months but I think your changes are going to be reflected in the joy you bring to future videos, programming and merchandising.
Another great video!! I feel all 5 things that you are quitting. I picked up my first sub box and already planning to just get fort worth when its available again. Your patterns are amazing! Im looking forward to seeing more of them.
Good for you. It sounds like you have a great plan in place. I love all the patterns you’ve made. I can’t wait to see what patterns you have planned as I will be waiting in line to purchase. Have a wonderful week! 😊
Hi Steph..I know exactly how you’re feeling and can commiserate. I’m in the process of culling, going through so much fabric, tools etc, that I realise were just impulse buys, because they looked so pretty or could be so useful. Some of the fabric has to be twenty years old at least! No joy there! Thanks for your inspirational video as usual. ❤️🇦🇺
Good for you, Stephanie! I get only the Sew Yeah box. It’s overall a good one, except for some of the notions which I usually give away. I’m not sure I’ll keep going with it this year-we’ll see. I like choosing my own fabrics, but I enjoy a good surprise, too! Emphasis on “good”. Hoping you find a lot of joy in what you do in 2024!
Saying No to things and people is so empowering. I'm a people pleaser and can feel the pressure slide off my shoulders when I say no. Self care is so important. Hugs to you for your stance on 2024!❤
I have been on your number 1 and 5 train for the last couple of years, it was fun getting all the new and pretty stuff but you are absolutely right it is a bit overwhelming with all the extra stuff that is not getting used. I am also going through old projects and either finish them or donate them. I can’t wait to see what you have going on for this year. ❤
I wish you were close enough that I could hug you right now! Best video of 2024! So great to hear you say what we all have in our own hearts but can’t say out loud Thanks
Right IN! All of this sounds healthy. I'm gonna quit keeping projects I've lost interest in and will never finish, and I'm going to stop putting my quilts and my style down and play to my strengths while trying to learn new or better skills but if it never happens... so be it! I want to enjoy doing what I love. Lastly, will try to be less afraid of FMQ but if I can't get the hang of it - then more big stitch quilting which I enjoy, as I do handwork. Thanks for your list. I love it that you are going to stop doing for others and do for yourself and what you love in your quilting
Thanks for all you do Stephanie ! Love the videos . I too am pairing down subscriptions. 1 more year of See Yeah ( building my stash) and the next CCuts will probably be my last for awhile. I have built more than a few of my own ‘ kits ‘ with fabrics I’ve acquired and want to focus on those. I’ll just do a least a block of the month to work on patterns I chose with fabrics I ❤ .
You are so correct in not supporting these companies. I have heard other utubers say the subscription boxes they pay for contain repeat notions they received by the same company. The fabric quality is inferior too. You are so right in telling us not to point mistakes out on our own quilts. .
I’m quitting putting my projects on the back burner so I can help others finish theirs. When I go to retreat I take projects to work on but they hardly ever come out of the project box because someone always needs something. I don’t mind helping a bit here and there but I tend to end up doing a lot of their cutting, etc for them. So I decided 2024 is going to be for me to work on my projects and finally finish some like the quilt for my bed that I finished the blocks for in 2019! I put the blocks out and arranged them, took a photo to see if I need to rearrange any and hopefully I can get some sewn together this week. I too need to quit things that don’t bring me joy. Thanks for the encouragement 😊
Life is hectic enough without doing things that don't keep you in a positives mood. You have to do what is right for you. You've done well with these 5 decisions. Have a great year and keep on smiling,
Good for you I second your goal of if it is not bringing you joy quit it. I look forward to seeing how far you can go concentrating on you and what brings you joy!
I've always been a huge proponent of making only what makes you happy. I have a couple projects that are likely never getting done because of that and I'm more than ok with that
This all sounds like a plan for a more productive & happier life for you and your family. @Marla Pavelzik and I were just talking about the same things. We deserve kindness to ourselves as much as giving it to others.
Hi Stephanie I just opened my package 📦. I love it all. I've been down sizing projects I work on. FWFS is an amazing company, and I'm staying with them. Murder Mystery Quilt 2024 I'm in my 6th year with them. I of course will be following your channel and your 3 birthday/ retreat buddies. Cheers to a great new year 🎉
I am quitting subscription boxes, I find that it’s basically the same thing in each box. A pair of scissors, pins that I don’t need. The fabric is cute and the pattern. I don’t watch unboxing because most of the reviews (IMO) aren’t honest.
Thanks for sharing!! I agree with you that there are a lot of folks out there that don't give their real opinion (although I always do and have taken heat for it!) so I understand why you don't watch unboxings!
It is called impowerment or taking back control of out lives. I am a semi retirer nurse so quilting is a hobby that i have enjoyed on and off all of my life but recently plonged back in when Covid hit the world. It must not be easy for youtubers who do not just quilt as a hobby to find your niche. There is a lot of competion out there. I recently discovered you via Steven and Walter. Thank you for the insider look at subscription boxes. I have often been tempted but as i live in Canada i feel that they are too pricy and am a believer of purchasing what you want or need and not what someone else thinks you need. Thanks for the honest commentary. Good luck!
Hi Stephanie. I’m so happy to hear that you’re going to be focusing on yourself this year. I, for one, will support you. I can’t wait to see and buy your patterns!!! I’m so excited for you!😃
Good for you, Stephanie! It’s always best to do what makes you happy and kick to the curb those things that don’t. I am going to quit buying patterns. I have so many free ones that I downloaded. I just don’t have any room for them and I will probably never make most of them so I’m going to clean out, my file of patterns. I’m also going to stop watching the Sew Yeah live shows. I love them but I am just too tempted to buy their stuff. I am going to concentrate on more sew-a-long projects to use up all my stash scraps. Then next year I start thinking about getting rid of the things I have made! Happy New Year!
Hi Steph.. I hear what you are saying about the subscription boxes. Some of those extra things you could send out to that Native American reservation that is in South Dakota. I think I got the name from you actually. I have their address if you need it. It really is crazy that these huge companies take advantage of you and your time. It is time to stop. . Good for you.. oh..don't buy into those advent boxes anymore. These companies are just giving you things that have been sitting around. Some of the companies are actually taking pre orders. NOW for 2024 Christmas. It is absurd.
This video was refreshing. Thank you so much for your honesty. If it's not for the joy, then it becomes a chore, and I have enough of those already in my life. I am looking forward to seeing your next video
Thank you Stephanie for this video. I have to agree with you. Sometimes I do things I don’t enjoy doing and I have stopped that as of this year, so go us.!
Great video. I think your list can be summed up by saying you are going to use your time and talent to invest in yourself. I’ve never purchased monthly subscription boxes, but I used to watch RU-vid unboxings. I stopped watching them because I knew the video maker was not likely to use the items even though they praised the box contents. This year I’m going to buy less fabric. My husband is going to be retiring, so it’s time for me to use the stash I have accumulated in preparation for this new point in our lives. Finally, I’ll say that I agree with not pointing out flaws in a quilt unless you are doing it for teaching purposes. My son is a musician. When he was in elementary school and he made a mistake during a solo performance, he would “make a face.” I told him that his face pointed out the mistake. We used the phrase “don’t make a face” throughout all his school years. He’s grown now and still keeps that phrase in mind during performances and in his non-music related work. So, everybody, don’t “make a face” when your work is praised; just say thank you. Thank you, Stephanie, for the inspiration you provide.
Love you! Love your content! Absolutely quit all of these things that steal joy. Selfish companies? Gone! Invest in self? Yes! Best wishes for a fantastic 2024 and beyond.
Good on ya! I'm quitting procrastinating, and hoarding. I will work a while everyday, and not leave so many UFOs. Im going to finish and give away. Thank you for the inspiration and for sharing this with us.😊
Who that's a lot to take in . I will support your channel and the changes that will make you happy. Look forward to seeing your patterns that you write.. Happy New Year and catch you next time xx 😊😊
I also quit my subscription boxes for the same reasons you mentioned. I also am spending more of my quilting time making the things I have had in my stash for years, and or decades. I am getting older and I want to leave finished quilts behind instead of fabric that my kids would not sew anything with.
Good for you. Do what brings you happiness. You are so talented and so willing to share your knowledge. You are such a good person and folks take advantage of that. ❤
You have really got me thinking 🤔about my subscription boxes. I stopped the Sew Sampler box in 2022 and started back up again for 2024. I've been quilting for almost 3 years now. I still consider myself a beginner. I can honestly say that I have come a long way in my work. Wow! #3. That is mind blowing to me. That is not cool. YOU GO GIRL! I'm patting you on the back. And sending you a big hug. I think I need to stop buying fabric and start using my stash! I actually started parting with fabrics and notions that I know I am not going to use or just have doubles etc. That's going well for me. Looking forward to your next video! 🌻
OMG I just found you and I cannot wait to go back and watch ALL the videos! Your honesty is so refreshing and I so appreciate it. I often feel almost obligated to buy what other quilters are selling on their channels because I feel like I "owe" it to them. I am not doing that anymore. It causes me more stress than joy for financial reasons and because I just don't need more stuff! And thank you for speaking to those of us that don't take the compliments but downgrade all of our hardwork by pointing out flaws that NO ONE else will notice! I can't wait to watch more of your videos! Thank you!
I too am going to get rid of some projects that don’t bring me joy in hopes of relieving the pressure I feel regarding completing them. Thanks for sharing ❤
I need stuff i am struggling with trying to get fabric and notions, and other stuff i need to do projects and starting my channel But I want to say thank you for trying help others by giving away and having giving aways ad making these tuff decisions
I pay my pattern-writer $35/Hour AND her name gets put on the pattern as the writer with me as the designer. She does it way better than I ever could and I appreciate her so much. I'm sorry you got taken advantage of in this way. I'm so glad you're standing up for your own well-being. Many of the things you've mentioned can take the joy out of your passion. Much Love😘
I have had quilts that don't make me happy so they are hard to finish so I really looked at them. One is a wedding ring quilt that I really want to make it was my first quilt LOL ya I know. But anyway a lady at joann's helped me pick the fabric out, Well helped me pick the fabric she thought would go. I hate most of them and one of the fabrics is falling apart. So I looked at it got rid of the fabric falling apart picked one I liked now I deciding what I want to change and I will do it as a leader ender project. I a going through all the quilts I haven't finished and going to do the same thing or put the fabric back in my stash or donate it. The ones I keep is going to be my leader enders or my hey I just want to sew today and not work on my current project. Thanks for sharing this. It;s my First time here. I subbed.
