5 Reasons I feel the Godox flash system is the overall best choice for micro four thirds photographers at the moment and specifically the Godox V860IIO is my flash of choice. I also give three tips for on camera flash with Olympus cameras.
I made one mistake with a flash model in the video that I corrected with a text overlay but here is the AA model of the Godox v860IIO which is called the TT685O a.co/dSguh6s

I cannot even begin to say how useful this tutorial was on the flash units and in particular the use of fill flash. I have always tend to use natural light because I was not sure how to compensate on the flash. Now I will no longer have to struggle with this process. Thanks very much!!!

I discovered your channel this morning. Thank you for your excellent videos; clean appropriate videos of good taste. I am an old film mechanical camera guy struggling to learn digital and decide what I can handle in today's world. I still own a 9 volt hand held light meter and a Bronica SQ-B! (get the picture?) Another Great video. i had a 4/3 oly flash fl50r left over and used only a very short time on em1. i wanted to do more off camera flash and really didn’t like or trust the oly r/c system. I also was excited to go all out olympus. When I switch over to em1mii I bought 2 860’s and the x1 transmitter. Now I enjoy flash using the em1. I recently got 350 and love the size of it on camera it’s small size is a perfect fit. Now that I have three flashes that I control I wanting to learn and experiment as much as i can. Flash was always my weak link. Now it’s fun. Thanks for all you share with us look forward to future vid - your Great teacher.

Very informative video. I would love it if one day you did a tutorial on the flash menu in the camera. For example, what is 'slow limit" and what are the advantages to changing it from the default. Same with X-sync. When would we change it and why? Why would we choose any flash sync other than the highest we can use? Olympus camera manuals don't do a very good job of explaining this stuff. Maybe another viewer could comment on this.

An additional Kudo for Godox is that if you switch to another camera system, all you need to do is to 1. buy a Godox trigger for your new system or 2. buy a Godox flash which can be used as a transmitter for all your off-camera flashes. You maintain HSS and TTL if required and if the off camera flash has that capability...

Joseph, thanks for the video. My only experience with off-camera flash lately has been with Nikon units, but I am starting to shoot more and more (hobby only) with an Olympus OM-D EM1 Mark 1 and would like to do some flash photography. Based on yours and other videos, I'm considering the purchase of the Godox TT350o for on-camera flash since it is compact, and perhaps a TT685o for off-camera/2nd flash use. Am I correct that I can trigger the TT685o by means of the TT350o on my camera, or do I also need or should I get the X1T-o Controller? I notice that Amazon has these three items listed as "frequently bought together". Am I on the right track here, or would you advise just buying two of the same flash units, like the TT685o units for more power? Thank you so much if you have time to respond.

Thanks Joe. Have you been able to use any of the Olympus flashes for fill-in? The only way I have found to make this work is setting the flash to SLOW1 or SLOW2. The issue here is that either the shutter speed is too slow for portraits or the ISO needs to be too high for noise-free images. Are GoDox flash units the only solution?

The Godox triggers do provide focus assist as a switchable function.
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 6 лет назад
Yes they do, it was a nice addition to the XProO. I did talk about it in another video but I do find it's usefulness still very limited because you have to turn it on and off with a switch and the flashes themselves do not have that function. I would love an update to the v860IIO where it gets similar functionality to the strobes from Canon and Nikon where the AF assist light turns on to focus and off during the exposure.
@gg48gg

The tt350o does have a focus assist light built in, according to the manual. It supposedly only turns on in very low light.
@JosephEllisPhotographer

On DSLR cameras there is a light but not on Olympus bodies unfortunately. There has been some talk that contrast detect AF causes it to be ineffective but it’s a feature sorely missing for low light AF although the EM1x AF does pretty great without it.

Joseph. I have been using the Godox units with Nikon's for some years. There is one aspect I not been able to replicate on the E-M1 ii and wondered if you had found the same. If I set my ISO to Auto with a range of 200 to 3200 and use the Godox it will always default to the lower ISO which results in underexposed images if shooting over a distance (say during speeches at a wedding). On the Nikon's the camera will boost the ISO if the flash output is insufficient. That is the camera and flash work together. Doesn't seem to be the case on an Olympus?
@JochenStrobel
@JochenStrobel 6 лет назад
Hi Joseph, the only little problem of the 6..-o series is that the auto zoom level is a bit narrower than the focal of the lens, which is a pity, especially because it works fine on the tt350 and it should be possible to get it correct with a firmware update. There is a lithium version of the 350 now for Sony, so hopefully they will make one for Olympus too.
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 6 лет назад
I had heard is a rumor about an Olympus version of the TT350 coming, should be an amazing little flash. Thanks for your insight on the flash auto zoom I haven't really noticed, I would guess mostly because I bounce my light at weddings about 90% of the time but good to know and hopefully we'll see an update in the near future.

I know I want a system including Good godox Ad200. My question is do I need a commander like the X2? I want an on camera flash option but might not use it all the time with the ad200. I need a system that will give me the versatility to only use off camera flash and sometimes on camera as well. Will the V1 'turn off' and still trigger the ad200? It will I need the X2 as well.? I was just using V1 as an example. If there is a better on camera flash for what I'm trying to accomplish, please let me know. Thank you

Joe...Thanks for the videos! I just sold all my Nikon gear and moved to an Olympus OM-D EM5 III and I love it! In the past, I didn't use use flash much on my Nikon so I'm looking for an affordable flash for fill. I mostly use it for family portraits inside. What do you use on your EM5 III? I'm considering the Godox TT350 or the TT685. I like the size and weight of the TT350 but I'm concerned that it might not be powerful enough. The more powerful TT685 would be preferred but it's considerably bigger and I'm afraid it will be too large and clunky on the EM5 III. I mostly use the flash on or just off the camera, usually inside with subjects no more than 20' - 25' away and I'm usually not in poorly lit environments. What's you experience with auto-focus without the help of the illuminator? What are your thought on which flash would be the better option?? Thanks in advance!
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 4 года назад
Hi David, if it were me I would get the TT350 and/or I might get two of them and keep one for only those times when I really want to set up a shot and use off-camera light. Most of the time one TT350 is going to be great for fill light or even bounced as long as you're not shooting too quickly and/or you're not pushing it too hard. For those times when you want to do something off camera the second unit can be controlled by the first and give you that extra stop of power you might want. As far as AF assist, I turned mine off a long time ago. The cameras already work down to something like -2 or -3 EV and even poorly lit rooms have been no problem. Now if I'm in a really dark dark reception and the band/dj isn't giving me any light (hardly ever) then I might consider using the AF assist because it does work but it comes at the cost of being distracting. More often if I'm stuck I'll use a video light or even my phone's flash light to focus if needed. I hope that helps.

I have the PEN F and I am looking for a powerful flash for the occasional portrait outdoors. I use a Nikon SB 900 right now in manual mode and on a sync cable. This is just for family and friends but I want off camera because I want my portraits to look good. I want TTL. Oh and mostly just want to take the shadows out from under the eyes and nose and chin while at the beach etc. I orinalry shoot portraits with my 75mm which means I am a few feet away from my subject most times. Not sure what the radio range is on those Godox.

terry breedlove Well it’s rated to something like 300 feet (2.4Ghtz range)... should be as good or better than the Nikon system. If I were you I’d probably go with the TT685O and the X1TO trigger. You get TTL, radio and all in its about $150. Crazy good deal.

You said the flash is going to control the background. I thought the shutter speed determines how the background is illuminated. The flash distance will also help determine how the background is lit.
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 5 лет назад
Michael Miller I’m sorry if I wasn’t clear, when using flash both the shutter and aperture will control the ambient light recorded. The flash may or may not hit the background depending on distance. Typically when using flash I will underexpose the ambient light by around -1 or -2 stops so that the flash will be the strongest source of light on my subject and I’ll still have some background light recorded. If you under expose the ambient say -3 or -4 stops then you’ll still get a nicely exposed subject but a very dark (black) background. I hope that helps.

Hi Joseph Ellis, greetings from Italy. I really like watching your videos and you convinced me to buy a Godox TT350O for my EM5 Mark II. Everything works perfectly in TTL but I can not make the flash work manually when it is mounted on camera. I can select manual values on flash but camera values override flash settings. In addition, the camera disables the manual mode among the selectable functions when the flash is inserted. Does the V860IIO also behave the same way? Thank you for your nice and informative videos.

@JosephEllisPhotographer 5 лет назад
Hi Danilo, Well first I just tested my EM5MKII with the TT350O and I can't seem to recreate the problem your having. My camera is working as expected using he manual flash powers on the TT350 and nothing is being overridden. Can you describe your settings more, what are your exposure, drive settings etc.? Maybe I can help. As far as the V860IIO, it works mostly the same way at the TT350 and yes, you should be able to use manual flash power at any time.
@danilocandiotti
@danilocandiotti 5 лет назад
@@JosephEllisPhotographer First of all thanks for the quick reply. I was completely wrong and the TT350o works perfectly even manually: I had not considered that its GN is much higher than the small flash supplied with the camera. The 1/128 shots were very similar to those done in TTL mode at 0.0 of power and I never tried before to shoot at 1/1 in manual. What a big light comes out from this little flash. Sorry for my shallowness. At this point I take this opportunity and I ask you if you know what the fourth configuration parameter of the flash called c.Fn 43-off means? There is the bl-10, id-off, st-on and the last (43-off/on) that is not documented. Thanks for your patience.

Thanks for the very helpful video. I have an FL600r Olympus flash but don’t use it because of the bright flashing white light that repeats when the flash is in slave mode. I use off camera flash a lot, handholding the flash. But the flashing bright light is just too annoying. Do the Godox flashes have a similar flashing light? If not, I’ll order the smaller Godox (mini?) and a transmitter. Thanks!
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 6 лет назад
r111k The Godox flashes have a repeating light too but it's a a dim red one instead of white and I've never found it annoying. Two things though if you haven't already I’d check to see if the white light can be disabled via a custom function. Second if you do go with Godox you'll need two units, either two flashes or a commander unit + a flash to get radio triggering. Any of the flashes I mention in the video/descripton are great and if you go for a trigger get the brand new XProO version. Good luck!

Joseph Ellis Thanks for answering. I haven’t seen a way to turn off the FL600r flashing light but I’ll keep looking. I use a Pen F so I would like a small flash and small transmitter. But if you think the newer (larger) transmitter is better, I’ll check it out. Thanks again.

@JosephEllisPhotographer 6 лет назад
Right but you don't have TTL correct? I'm pretty sure Yongnuo doesn't have any flashes specifically for m4/3 like Godox although I do think the YN flashes for around $60 are a great value. TTL isn't a huge deal for some photographers (maybe you included) but I really like to have that as an option for weddings and events when things can be very fast paced. Also I pretty sure Yongnuo doesn't have a rechargable lithium battery either, whether or not that is important... YMMV.

To be honest I haven't tried it on a legacy body BUT I do know the legacy flashes work on the new bodies so I assume the TTL is basically the same and in that case I think it should work perfectly. Not 100% on that but if I were a betting man I'd say that it would work as advertised.

@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 6 лет назад
Happy to help - the flash comes with a plastic attachment that has a thread on the bottom which will work with any stand. Do keep in mind if you buy a Godox flash that you'll need to also get a Godox transmitter (Godox XProO) to make your flash work off camera. If you buy an Olympus flash you can use the flash built into the camera to trigger the Olympus off camera flash but it won't communicate via radio but rather via a pre-flash of light which limits it's reach and reliability. Good luck!

Great video. I have a question though...what max shutter speed does this flash support? I just bought a Nissin and it's max speed is 1/250 and I feel that is way too slow. I'm new to flash so maybe I am just totally uninformed?
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 6 лет назад
The max shutter speed for normal TTL is 1/250 which is a number set by the camera. 1/250 is actually the standard for most if not all professional cameras. Now to get around that limitation a lot of flashes including the Godox flashes have what is called 'high speed sync" which allows you to use shutter speeds beyond 1/250. This mode does come at a cost however of reduced power so it works great for fill light as I describe in the video but not so good if need a lot of power. I would imagine your Nissin also has high speed sync but I can't be sure, your're going to be looking for a little lightning bolt with an H next to it.. or check the manual :)

QUESTION: I have heard a lot about ETTR and I was wondering if this technique is necessary when using a flash. I have also heard that professionals don’t use ETTR and this is only an ‘amateur photographer’ thing. Is that the case? Keep safe....Cheers, Keith Pinn (Barrie, Ontario)
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 4 года назад
Well first ETTR is definitely a tool many pros use and while it’s effectiveness varies based on the sensor/brand of camera you use for Olympus it’s a real benefit. Now as far as flash ETTR can work but it would be better handled by increasing your flash exposure compensation and not by using aperture/shutter/ISO. Try adding +.5 to +1 flash exposure comp and then bring down that overexposure in post and see what you think. I hope that helps and good luck!

Thank Joseph for your quick response. I was participating on an on-line webinar this after and I asked the same question and the leader basically basically put his hands over this face and said " professionals don't use this technique...only amateurs" . I think he didn't know how to respond to my question and this was the easy way out. Never-the-less, I didn't feel great. Keep creating great Olympus based content. I have learnt so much from your channel. Keep safe! Keith

I have a possibly silly question. I own an Olympus EpL5 and a Leica v lux 1 (which has lumix flash electronics). Do you or anyone know if these flashes will work in all aspects with both cameras? I went to the Godox site but I didnt see any type of wizard for choosing the right flash.

Hello Joseph, One question I have an Olympus OMD M10 Mark III camera, I want to buy a TTL flash, but I do not know if I need to also buy a transmitter trigger to be able to use the flash outside the shoe, I see in the manual of the camera that RC brings for the flash , but I have the doubt if the camera is connected to the flash or if I really need the transmitter Trigger. Thanks for your help.
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 5 лет назад
Hi Rafael, OK so this is a tiny bit complicated. You have options... If you buy Godox then you'll need a Godox flash and a Godox transmitter or a second flash (used as a transmitter) to use that system off camera. It will give you TTL, high speed synch etc. but it's a proprietary system and it doesn't mix with Olympus flashes. Now if you buy an Olympus flash then you can use the RC system which is optical slave tech (not radio like Godox) and with that, you can use any Olympus flash including the built-in units to trigger an off-camera flash. The downside here is that optical triggering isn't as reliable as radio and needs line of sight between flashes to work. Lastly, if you buy the newest Olympus flash the FL-700WR then you have both Olympus RC (optical) tech and the new Olympus radio triggering but to use it you'll also need another flash or the Olympus trigger. Olympus radio is the most expensive option but it is weather sealed, reliable and also gives you a built-in LED light for AF assist. So to sum up you either go all Godox or all Olympus for your flashes and triggers. I hope that helps!

@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 3 года назад
It can be triggered by the FLLM3 but only via optical pre-flash which isn’t as functional or reliable as the radio system of Godox. My advice is to buy a second Godox flash to use as a trigger or buy the Godox XProO trigger.

Everyone seems to be raving about this flash. I was so excited to receive it but as soon as I put it onto my camera I found one major problem. No one seems to have mention it and in my books it means that I can't use it as an event photographer. The head does not lock. I use the MagMod sphere and bounce and as soon as I put it on the head collapses down. Has anyone else come across this?

Adam Soller Photography I use mine with my Rogue Flash bender and grids all the time without having it fall which is why I didn’t mention it. Sorry to hear about your trouble but that must be just above the weight limit for the tension which honestly surprises me.

Adam Soller Photography Well mine is pretty stiff, I would think it could handle Magmod no problem so it might be worth trying another sample if it’s not possible much trouble. Or maybe you could see if anyone at Magmod knows anything about it?

Do you use some type of modifier on the flash when using for outdoors fill?
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 6 лет назад
Plimpton Sometimes but usually only if I plan to also use the same flash as a main light in other images and it’s already set up with a modifier. When you’re just using a strobe for fill it’s usually a lot less necessary to have it be soft since it’s not creating much (if any) shadow. This is assuming that it’s firing 1.5 to 2 stops under ambient and it’s hitting your subject close to on axis with the camera (as I usually do).
@edgarsteele
@edgarsteele 6 лет назад
Joseph Ellis thank you for the quick reply and info. So when you're using it on camera, you're typically using it in ttl; exposing for the ambient and then adjusting exp comp to fit your needs?

flipbooks by flipbook project When you buy a Godox flash you buy the version for your camera brand. In your case that would be the ‘c’ version like v860IIc or TT350c. I hope that helps!

I bought three of the Godox TT685o for wedding work. They all have an infuriating problem both with my Panasonic and Olympus bodies. When used on camera and direct the auto zoom does not correlate properly to the focal length set on the lens. If I zoom my lens out to 12mm these flashes go to 14mm. If I zoom to 14mm they go to 17mm. If I zoom to 17mm they go to 25mm. If I zoom to 25mm they go to 35 and so on. If I use the flash like this then I get dark edges around my frame like a vignette. Infuriating! I hoped that a firmware update might fix this. There has been one so far, but it doesn't. I've conversed with others on forums. Apparently the V860iio lithium ion powered model has the same fault. Unfortunately, Godox customer service is non existent so absolutely no joy contacting them! Beware if you are buying for on camera use!
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 5 лет назад
Thanks for the heads up, sorry for the frustration, it does seem like an easy firmware fix. I guess I never really became aware of this because I almost never use direct flash on camera, 99% of the time I'm bouncing either with or without the Rogue Flash Bender. Do you use a lot of direct flash?

Can I use the TT350o off camera with my em-1 or do I need a remote commander on the camera?
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 4 года назад
You’ll need either a transmitter or another Godox flash. If you have the budget I’d go for a second flash to be the transmitter since it can act as a commander and give you more lighting possibilities but the XProO transmitter is also very nice and it has a very easy to use interface. If you’re really stuck you can also use the TT350 with a camera’s built in flash by triggering via optical preflash however it’s not as easy, reliable or configurable as the normal radio based wireless system.

Owen Auer Yes but you’ll be losing all the great functionality of the Godox wireless system. You’ll be forced to use a manual flash power and you need to have line of sight between the flashes, but yes you can get it to fire.

@JosephEllisPhotographer

I turn off the exposure preview because with many flash exposures I'm using the flash as the main light and underexposing the ambient by 1-3 stops. If I left the exposure preview on then I would be staring at a very dark image while trying to compose my image. I use the S-OVF function mapped to a Fn button so that I can quickly go between the two modes. I hope that helps!

Does one need the separate transmitter to use just the TT350O off camera?
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 5 лет назад
Well to get full TTL and HSS yes you do but they are quite affordable, the one I like best is the Godox XProO at about $60US. You can use a built in optical sync to get the flash to fire off camera with for example the cameras built in flash but only in manual and without the reliability of radio. If you're thinking about getting a transmitter maybe even a better idea would be to pick up a second Godox flash all of which can also act as a transmitter and then you'll have more options overall than if you just had one light and a transmitter.
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 5 лет назад
One more word to the wise... the interface for wireless control on the TT350O is a bit hard to use because the unit itself is so small. It's doable but not as easy or fast IMHO as the larger units which have more buttons and screen real estate. The XProO has an excellent design but again it's only a transmitter.

Just for clarification- Can I use my pop-up flash to optically trigger the Godox tt350o? If i do this the camera's auto exposure system will not function at all? I ask because I have been using an small optical slave to trigger my old Metz 45 CT-4 for tabletop images and it appears to work well- It must be the sensor built in to the Metz that is controlling the exposure? Does the godox tt350o have a similar sensor if TTL is not possible without the triggering device? Thanks
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 5 лет назад
Yes you can use the pop up flash on your camera with the Godox and it will fire in slave mode. The cameras exposure system will continue to work but it will not control the amount of flash being output by the Godox so TTL would be a no go you'll have to adjust the flash power of the Godox manually. I'm not familiar with the Metz but in order for it to give you TTL it would have to be working with the Olympus protocol of optical pre-flash?
@raybohn7
@raybohn7 5 лет назад
Thanks for your help. The Metz is no longer in the picture :(. Based on your information, it seems to make sense to purchase just the flash for now, use it on optical and buy another Godox later if I feel the need. Thanks again, this has really helped. Ray
