Olympus proves that they are the leader in innovation with this tiny little flash - FL-LM3 that comes with most of the OM-D cameras. This flash is compact in build but packs in quite a punch. It allows full swivel and tilt head for bounced flash photography that can dramatically improve your flash shooting. You can also control the flash in full manual and use it as a commander to trigger wireless off camera flash units for creative lighting effect. Furthermore, the FL-LM3 is also weather-sealed against dust and splash! If you want to read instead of watch the video, here is an accompanying blog article: robinwong.blogspot.com/2020/0...

Robin, FANTASTIC!!! Agree with you 100+1% It is brilliant things from Olympus. When I saw it for first time, when I opened box, I was surprised. Why? What is it? In few minutes I realized how excellent this tiny thing. I do not use flash a lot, I very very rare used built-in flash on other cameras (even if it had it). So lack of flash on Olympus body was good for me at the same time, having few extra grams in my bag with ability to bounce it from celling, use it as commander for big brothers and carry NO extra battery is blessing. Rotating, Tilting, Fully controllable and 50 grams! Thanks a lot for video!

FYI for anyone who had the same panic I did that either the hotshoe or the flash was broken: the flash will NOT work in any Silent mode. If you move to Auto or go to a different mode, then it's golden.

I totally agree! I use it quite often when I don't need massive power, especially indoors, I live in the NL and virtually every home has a white ceiling, so in most cases this is all you would need for general photography. Obviously I bring more gear for a portrait shoot, but this one is always in my basic day bag for always carrying around. The best flash is the one you are carrying :)

Excellent video. It's a great little flash and you can move it off camera with a cord made by JJC. I have made a bracket that allows it to sit on the lens hood of the Oly 60mm macro so that you can use it for 1:1 macro (or greater with rings, teleconverter, accessory lens). A guy on DPReview pointed out that the little plastic butter containers that you get in restaurants are a push fit and make a good diffuser! It was genius for Oly to put a 4th power contact on the hotshoe enabling the unit to be so tiny. My whole macro flash setup lens, flash and diffuser now weighs half what it used to!

When I changed from Nikon to Olympus with the main reason to reduce my load , I got an E-M10ii with a build in flash. I've never been a big fan of these flashes. But then I saw this mini Flash and manged to get one on Amazon. I'm amazed at just how powerful this thing is ! Basically you control it in exactly the same way as the build-in flash. Not having to make any adjustments on the flash directly is a major plus. And the size and weight !! It's always in the bag, just in case :-)
@over-x-poser6289

You capture my thoughts on that flash. I put it back in the box when it came with the Em1 ii as "useless accessory". When we started to appreciate the cam more and more, it took just one thorough look at the flash to realize its strengths. I dub it the best compact flash on the market. Only downside is not being able to put it anywhere else without tinkering... which is sad, because the little extra plastic is a great solution to keep it rock solid on the hot shoe. Wanted to keep it & sell the ii for a iii, so we get one extra to chop "it" off. Since iii doesn't come with it, we keep the ii and buy another LM3... :) Cheers

Got the FL-LM3 the other day for my E-M10 II after having seen this video and your blog post. I have the original FL-50 for my trusted and still perfectly functioning E-1 from 2003, which by the way also works fine with both my E-M10 and E-M10 II. But for many occasions it is too big to carry around unless the situation really calls for it, besides looking and feeling quite disproportional on top of an E-M10. This little guy is indeed amazing in its refined simplicity and the perfect fill-in flash with its swiveling head. I have now tried it for a couple of days and it was love at first sight. Thank you Robin, and greetings from Sweden!

Of course I am giving you a thumbs up, i always enjoy your videos because you always seem so cheerful! 😊😊😊 I am just getting back into photography after a lot of years, and so I bought myself a beautiful instrument called an OM D EM 5 mk ii! Having always had a love of fine optics and elegant precision instruments,.it really couldn't have been anything else At the same time, since I learned my photography on a Zenith E with a scres in 58mm F2 lens, and since mg last camera was a OM2 sp,I must admit to being somewhat frightened by this one! I am totally in awe of what it can do and learning about this little gem is really stretchkng my intelect! I only hope that my creativity is equal to it! Just ordered one. I recently bought the Oly 12-50mm; primarily for the macro/close focus mode. I was shooting with extension tube; but DOF was too narrow. That lens is a nice lens, but in Macro mode the largest aperture is f6. I need more light; especially if there is a hint of wind outside. I have LED light box, but it is inconvenient. I think this little guy will help a bit. In my experience, using flash versus fixed lighting seems to counter subjects that are moving (bugs moving, leaves shaking). I'll have to rewatch your macro video.

I totally agree. I wish my Nikon Z camera came with something like this. I use a Metz ring flash for macro, and the FL-LM3 is perfect for triggering it. Since popup flashes have fallen out of favour with manufacturers, they should all be including a little commander flash like this.

It is nice alternative. I would like to see similar flash for Pentax as they removed pop-up flash from all recent hi-end bodies, which I consider to be very stupid idea. I have multiple flashes, but not always I carry some of them. I even got very small METZ MB26 which operates with 2xAAA batteries. But when I recently added EM5III, I got it with this little flash which can do a lot. Current cameras have quite usable higher sensitivity levels, so even a small flash like this can help a lot. Powering it from camera is great as I do not have to take care about batteries. The only sad part is, that it does not work with my other Olympus cameras like XZ-1, XZ-2, Stylus1s, EPL-6..

Hello from Indiana, USA! I prefer an external flash (such as the Godox 350 or larger for two reasons. 1) more flash power 2) the LM3 uses the camera battery for flash power, meaning that battery will need to be charged/replaced sooner. If I know I am taking a number of flash photos, I'd prefer the larger flash. I do agree that it is a nice little flash that takes little space to carry, and it has come in handy a few times. Unlike so many built-in flashes, this one can turn for bounce - as you indicated. Didn't know it was also waterproof.
@robinwong
@robinwong 4 года назад
If you need to do a lot of flash, an external flash makes more sense. But the tiny flash is a solid backup, and can be useful in many situations (travel, or casual environment)

Nice product. It sounds like a better alternative for a pop-up flash. And it is smart to combine it with the camera sale. Otherwise, people looking for a flash will go for a more powerful model. Although using it as a trigger is a nice extra.

The more powerful model is also larger, heavier, needs batteries, and not many people do serious flash photography these days. The tiny flash helps in some situations and can make a difference.

thanks to you Robin! for me the small flash is one of "bells and whistles" i really love on my e1 MII. For all reasons you explained here. By the way one of the reasons why i did not change to the MIII. If I give my MII away at eBay, everybody expect that i give all to the camera what is in the kit. Meaning if i change to MIII, I have to purchase the flash again. not that it is too expensive, but I'm am kind of offended. And yes, it is a weird decision from Olympus to take the flash out from the standard bundle.

I have 4 of them, this is not a problem for my em1 III I love it and save the shot when I'm indoor for bouncing

Is flash enough to take pictures in the evening? (in a nightclub). It would be used with the em1 mark III

@@romainprovost7164 not possible sorry... But in a large room with white walls no problem. You can bounce on the wall near you

@@mimstyle Thank you. And for a family party in a fairly large party room (but with soft lighting), would that be okay?

Hi, Robin do you know, why my flash suddenly doesn’t fire although my camera recognized the flash? Thanks for help.

I shoot a lot of indoor sports with my E-M5ii, namely roller derby. Most of the venues have enough light, barely, that I can get shutter speeds of at least 1/160-1/250 without a flash and without pushing ISO like crazy, mostly because I use fast primes. After a season of shooting roller derby like this I tried using this little flash, as it came with my camera, and I found myself at a venue which was simply too dark, but thankfully it had a low, white drop ceiling to bounce the flash off of. This little flash performed WELL above and beyond what I thought is possible. I have since upgraded to a Godox TTL350O, but still use this little guy when I don't want to deal with the weight and bulk of the Godox. Great little flash! Only shame is that it drains the battery.

About how many shots before you get serious battery drain ?

Thanks for sharing Robert, your experience with shooting indoor flash was beyond my expectation. I'd recommend a dedicated external flash for that, but you have proven that minimal gear can go a long way.

@@robinwong thanks! I was shocked at the capability of that little flash too, but after shooting one game of roller derby using the little Olympus "baby Yoda" flash, I upgraded to a Godox TT350 which i typically over power by about an extra stop and then bounce it off the ceiling and it took my indoor sports photography, especially portraits, to a whole new level. Would a FF camera be better? Sure, but I can't afford two systems and my little Olympus does EVERYTHING. A true Swiss Army Camera!

@@douglasallen511 I can't say for sure, when I shoot roller derby I usually shoot 2-4 60 minute games (running clock with a halftime) in a row and don't think much about my batteries since I carry 5 with me and that has never not been enough to get me through a day. If I had to guess, I'd say that the battery life loses about a third on my E-M5ii if I use the flash for every shot. Obviously that depends on a lot of factors, namely how much power you're requesting for the flash, but while the added drain on the battery is certainly noticeable, it isn't devastating.

@@robinwong and for what it is worth, even my big $80 Godox flash can't rotate and angle to all the angles that the little Olympus FL-LM3 can. Can't believe they didn't include it with the E-M1 Mark III, it's a MUST HAVE for any Olympus user I think! So versatile!
