In this week's video, we talk about the Fujifilm X-E1, A 10-year-old mirrorless camera that holds up incredibly well and can compete with somewhat modern cameras. I think the magic of the X-E1, is the sum of its parts combined, so these are my top 5 reasons to get one.

My X-E1 was my first Fujifilm camera, bought in 2013. I love it and still use it today. I've put the XF 27mm pancake lens on it pretty much full time and use it for street or travel. On my motorcycle, it's the best camera to take and I've shot gorgeous panoramas with it handheld. I doubt I will ever let it go even though I also own/shoot two X-T5 bodies, two X-T2 bodies, and a GFX 100. Cheers!

Its so easy to get caught up in the hype of 'tech progress' that the basics for the initial attraction to photography can be lost. This video was a very good summary. Thanks 👍🏻

there's no way the e1 sells for US$140 these days !! unless it's in a very shabby condition..i recently scored one in as new mint condition complete with box & accessories for $240 ! they're even more expensive in Japan and some parts of europe.

Wait until you hear what I paid for my X-Pro2 😂 Joking aside, it's interesting to hear about the prices, I think most of the comments on my videos about prices are from the U.S market, the U.S really likes to jack up the prices. The cost of used cameras will always be higher in Japan due to import fees, but you do have a lot more variety and options, we're talking orders of magnitude, which kind of makes up for it. Regardless, hows is the camera treating you? having fun using it? Curious to hear your thoughts and experiences with it. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to share a comment as well! I appreciate it 🙏🏼✨

I just picked up the x-e2 and just adore it. I had been shooting exclusively raw on all my Fuji cameras for over 6 years until this camera came along! Alongside my x-t30 II it gives me the best of both worlds when combining travel and street photography. I might pick up the x-e1 just for the heck of it.

Nice coverage! Here in Southern Ontario I rarely see the X-E1 (body only) going for less than 300. Luckily I got mine a few years back for just that, with the 18-55 f2.8-4 included. Great camera. One thing I rarely see mentioned when talking about buying Fuji used is ensuring you keep the firmware up-to-date. Almost all the bodies I've picked up over the years were on the og firmware, and with these early X-Trans 1 cams that severely hurts their usability, esp autofocus performance. Updating the firmware makes it feel like a new cam thanks to the huge performance buff.

Its a great camera with nice image quality. But I'm about to sell mine and upgrade to a newest system. XE1 has slow autofucus, doesn't have classic chrome film simulation, no face detection autofocus, and no wireless connection to transfer photos. But still, the image quality is legendary. One of the best cameras that ever made by fuji.

Due to an upcoming trip to visit a longtime friend of mine in California, I decided over the weekend to break out my Fuji X cameras again after a very long hiatus of not using them for photography. I noticed how much I was gravitating towards my X-E1 over my X-T1 and my X-T2. The X-E1 just felt immediately intuitive to use unlike the latter two, and I think it's because it has just the right amount of physical controls. Advanced functions can be added to the Q menu where it can be easily accessed but also tucked away from the exterior of the camera where it could present confusion for a casual user.

I've just sold my X-E1 after having it for a year. I have several other Fuji cameras but wanted something that would give me a rangefinder like experience with interchangeable lenses. This is a really great camera that gives excellent results but there were a couple of things that I couldn't get on with. Firstly, as you say, it is quite small and did not feel right in my hands. More importantly though, I wanted to use this camera with manual focus lenses. Originally the X-E1 did not have focus peaking but it was added later as part of a firmware update. Unfortunately it was not very clear and in white only which I find hard to see so I was missing focus a lot. In the end I traded it in for an X-PRO2 which is an astounding camera and solves both these issues. However these were problems very particular to me. If they don't bother you I would happily recommend this as a great camera and at a bargain price too (around £200 in the UK at the moment for a good one).

I really like the comments about the " organic film-like look". Chris Orange says a similar thing in one of his YT videos. This has really rung a bell with me. When I first upgraded from the x-T10 (X-Trans II) to the X- T20 (X-Trans III) something was lost and I couldn't articulate it. I chalked it up to the idea that I just had to adjust to the change rather than an organic film-like look I had lost. I have the X-T5 (X-Trans V) and the X100t (X-Trans II) and now have just purchased an X-E1 and am picking it up today. Can't wait.

Thanks for the video. Admit I sold most of my Fuji gear like XT4 and lenses and moved on from my X-E1 up to full frame Mirrorless cameras I still have my X-E3 which I like a lot. Sure it’s a newer sensor but still gives me all the satisfaction my X-Pro1 and X-E1 did. Other than the organic feel of the X-E1 it still offers all of the other benefits you mention. Take care.

Great videos Jorge, my copliments to your work and dedication to share. I own X-E2, X-M1, X-T30 and the X-Pro1. Of them the X-M1 has provided me with most photographic joy. I used it primarily with all sorts of manual lenses I've collected. The flippy screen is most useful in all around manual street photography and I don't complain about the white-only focus peaking. In fact I've used it winter time with snow around and I managed quite well. I've gotten the X-Pro1 as an investigative quest to see if there is any difference against the X-m1 in terms of color and renderings - I am not done yet so can not provide an answer. Have you noticed such difference between the X-E1 and X-Pro1? Is it worthwile to add another camera to the collection?

Hi, thank you for your report with a lot of demonstrations, what the different sensors with their software delifers. I remember to the E2s model. It is more usefull to snapshot fotografie than the M1/E2. Autofocus works in avaible light very well. Espezialy with newer optics as 35 mm / 2.0 even fast. Facedetection helps in case of moving children. Colors are realy nice. I prefer pro negative high, it controls the more punchy outcome and produce nice skintone. My son has a greater enthusiasment than me and invested in x-pro 3. But than he missed the analog look and treated his fotos with a software filter to come back to this older look.... I first bought an XT1 that fell in water. Then I bought an Xe-1 and I like it even more, especially because it's more compact. I bought an 27mm for this reason and I had the chance to discover the incredible versatility of this focal length with looks very "natural" to me. I first regretted the lack of the Chrome simulation but I really like the results I get from the Xe-1. I almost forgot what post-processing means despite I still make very little adjustments occasionally. I'm not precisely a street photographer but I can't go out without a camera and the Xe-1 is very easy to carry around. I don't regret it and I don't feel the need to upgrade. I really like your approach on gear oriented on the uses rather on the specs. I'm more interested in the practice and the culture but I guess there's something here to look at on these subjects and I subscribe!

good point of view. As per your qualitative minimalism and low cost approach, you've didn't mentioned the X-M1 with X-mount Lens which has the same sensor as the X-PRO1 and the X-E1. Compromise: loosing the viewfinder Avantage : damned smaller and lighter which gives you more occasions to have it with you therefore to engrave beautiful situation you wouldn't have had the occasion to do with bigger camera. It's a must have on top of your favorit cameras ! If X-trans sensore is not something you really want you have cheaper for the same 16Mp resolution with the X-A1. For the price difference go for the X-M1 Seen forward I've experiencing it for 10 years now with awesome build quality. Couple it the 27mm 2.8f Lens and it's a perfect match for ready to shoot any situation AT anytime Oops was to the point to forget it has a very qualitative orientable flash

I do have an X-E1 however I prefer the upgrade in overall performance in the X-E2, the speed is more than enough for my needs compared to the lightening fast current models and the focus peaking for manual lenses is streets ahead of the X-E1. If the X-E2 had a tilting screen it would be my perfect Fuji. I've hunted out a lot of bargains on the older models and I have no intention of ever parting with any of them as they will get scarcer over time. In their own ways they are all fun to use and provide a slightly different shooting experience.

I always hear righ-eye dominant people complain about the placement of viewfinders and I always found that odd, as a left-eye dominant, because I never rub my nose against the back of the camera. And then I realised that I actually look up into the camera when I'm shooting, kinda like a Kubrick stare but with a camera in front of me 😅 Also I would like to defend the case of the Leica Q2 compared to Fuji X100 series. The Leica Q2 has a 47MP full frame sensor and one of the sharpest lenses ever brought to a consumer camera, and Leica is very well aware of that as they have implemented some crop features where the camera crops in the image to replicate different focal length (35, 50, 75 and 85, not sure about the last one). High res sensor and sharp lens means that you still have very usable images even at the tightest crop setting (and if that doesn't please you, you can always get the full picture in a photo editing software). So even though, the Q2 is similar to the X100 series as it has a fixed lens, the Q2 is much more versatile in my opinion (also cost an arm and a leg)
@Jorge-Perez
@Jorge-Perez Год назад
Clockwork orange style? lol, I do consider the viewfinder placement very important, I could try to say a lot of things that sound smart, but it's mainly about being comfortable to use 😂 I know what you mean about the Q2, but most of my photography philosophy is to get things in camera, and although the Q2 can crop in camera and remove the need of having to do it later in post, it's still a crop. I rather not, but that's just me. I'll keep both my arms and legs thanks 😂 Thanks for watching friend, and for sharing a comment as well, cheers 🙌🏼✨

Used to shoot with the o.g. x100.... sold it. why? sticky aperture... then the xt1 xt10 came. bought each of those. sold the xt10... why? I am in the events industry, being unable to shoot with flash or strobe on continuous mode is a big no no. So stuck with xt1. Happy with it? yes and no. Yes, happy as the skintone and general color output SOOC is really good. the image is a lot sharper than my ageing 2011 d600. i have been a nikon shooter since 2005. No not really happy... reason is lack of dynamic range. If i shoot metering the highlights especially in somewhat dim venues... i end up having dark contrasty image. even with flash. So have to shoot in raw in order for me to be able to recover those really dark and shadows and contrasty portion of the image. Now comes 2016... i got me my 1st xpro2 then xt2 then another xt2. bid goodbye to the xt1. Havent upgrade to xt3 xt4 xpro3, as my current fuji camera lineup is more than enough to the task. =)

I would suggest a fujicron prime if you want to use autofocus or back-button focusing, those lenses are snappy and that does help with the slow autofocus of this older camera. That being said, you don't "need" a fuji lens, viltrox and 7artisans have decent options for both manual and autofocus lenses I well, But I appreciate how small and lightweight fuji primes are. You CAN sit down in post and 'make it better'. Ansel Adams had a quote: "The negative is the equivalent of the composer's score, and the print the performance." Of course he was way before digital, but it is still true in a way. My apologies I really don't want to start a conflict, but hugely disagree with what you said starting around the 4:10 mark. I just think you are wrong there and it came across as maybe even a little condescending and might make you sound uninformed to those that have a lot of experience. I personally feel I would be missing a lot if I shot jpeg only. I'll frequently work with the files and interpret the same image different ways. I enjoy the film simulations but I always shoot with RAW also whenever I use them.
