The X trans original does, not only have, unique color compared to the rest. It also has more detail and way better processing. There is something special going on with this sensor. It renders skin detail way better as well. The Xpro1 & X-e1 both have 12 bit raw vs 14 bit for the 2,3,4 and still has better everything ! Like i said. Something very special going on with the original X trans

I wholeheartedly agree. I am on my second XE1. I do like the XT2 as well, I have 3 of them, but I use the XE1 more for fun. My first XE1 I bought new and when it finally died...shutter had 270k on it.

Hey man! Great review! It's interesting how colours can change the feeling of a photograph. I already own two x-t3's but recently picked up a x-t1 to play with. And I really like it. Somehow the more saturated look looks more interesting. Sure you can add that in lightroom but it's cool seeing that through the evf already. I might pick up an x-pro1 too to try the first version :)

I've got xe1, xe2, xt3. xe1 - is great, there is something magical when I look into pictures from it. At the same time low res evf and screen makes it hard to use, especially if you wish to use manual focusing. And that's the reason I sold it, so my go to camera is xe2, it lost some magic, but paired with vintage glass and speedboster makes great results. Finally xt3 stays on shelf most the time. It's very good, but feels like lost all the magic

Used to have trans1 & 4 and have tested them side by side. I found the render under the sunlight is where the most differences are. So indoor shot may not notice the differences but outdoor where the sun cast in, it really does look more nature and pleasing on the trans1. Also like the slightly low contrast on the trans1.Trans4 however looks kinda purple..pink-ish tone in some scenarios and makes the color kinda flat overall.

It would be interesting to compare, say, two X-T2's to each other to test the consistency of the sensors and whatever else might be revealed. Also, has the latitude of the files improved as the file sizes enlarged. You don't get the same image from a 35mm negative and a 4x5 negative. I also think, if you have Photoshop, using the color picker to get the numbers of the colors would help. You can't argue numbers.
@Kim_Alexander

Your response is great as it acknowledges the technical curiosity of the commenter while also highlighting the practical challenges and your perspective on photography. Here's a slightly refined version of your answer: "Hehe, I love how we're diving deep into the technical side of things! Getting two X-T2s specifically for this comparison might be a bit much for me, but I do have three different cameras with the X-Trans 4 sensor, which could be interesting to compare. However, it's important to remember that numerous factors can influence the results, like varying daylight conditions, cloud movements, flash quality (only high-end flashes have consistent color output), and light frequencies from different sources. We'll see where this exploration takes us. Personally, though, I'm a bit skeptical about how much these technical details matter in the grand scheme of creating compelling images. After all, photography is as much about the art and vision as it is about the gear and numbers!"

My main camera is the X-E3 since 2020 so I’ve been pretty much familiar with the colors produced by X-Trans III sensor. Just recently I bought X-E1 which has the original X-Trans sensor, and wow, I immediately noticed the color difference, I really love the colors straight out of camera, it has different looks to it, different feel that I decided to shoot jpegs only with my X-E1.

Great comparison, thank you! What triggered me here is that it is difficult at best to see a resolution difference between 1/2 (16MP) and 3-5 with increased resolution. Very surprising, though that may be due to RU-vid compression, who knows. I don't think 16MP is a bad thing (I took pictures with the X100T for years) but it doesn't give you any latitude for crops, so for that alone, I would go for the 24MP sensor cameras...

I am half way through but wanted to comment. You say more magenta, more ... etc and I see it differently I see the X Trans1 is a "greater density" of colour. This is especially noticeable with the Red wall on the wooden building at the beginning and the Red first aid bag. As for the Green of the first aid cross it is not more dense than the 5th but it is certainly more than 2, 3, & 4. Just thought I would comment.

yeah, switched from x70 to x-e4 for performance and resolution, but figured out how many awesome photos I made with it. even comparing with x-h2s photos I definitely see more accurate colors in x-h2s, but those magic of old xtrans sensors, you even can't describe. I've done similar experiments at home with different cameras, but difference is more noticeable when you use it on photoshoots.

Yes. Spot on. I backtracked to using a couple of X-T2s instead of an X-T3 and X-T4. The only paid work I do these days is a few weddings each year. I found that my older X-T2 actually gave less noise at high ISOs indoors (e.g. churches, etc.) than the X-T3 or 4 in low light. Therefore, I spent far less time in post removing chroma noise on shots taken at say, ISO 3200 or 6400. Of course, IBIS on the X-T4 is a complete waste of time for shooting people. Let's face it. No one stands perfectly still, so all that a slower shutter speed gets you is blurry people! I also prefer the slightly smaller body size of the X-T2.

Weird, I've watched a number of these videos on different Fujifilm sensors, but almost everyone comes to a slightly different reason why each looks different. your conclusion is same as mine. The only one who stands out as different is the x-trans 1 witch also host a 12bit color sensor compared to 14 bit in the others. actually even if you set the camera at the same value they are slightly different in the raw converter. If I adjust this so that the value is the same the colors are more off. Therefor I just set the value in camera so that it's same on all cameras and left it as is in the raw converter So no need to redo anything

Which version of the IV sensor did you use, the X-T3/30/100V(gen1) or X-T4/Pro-3/T30 II(gen2) sensor? I had an X-E1 indirectly compared to the X-E2S I use for landscape, the X-trans I sensor had slightly more pleasing sky tone, but the greens were a bit mushy. A few months ago I got a solid deal on an X-T30 & kind of prefer some of the profiles of II sensor(classic-chrome off the top of my head) better. Greens in landscape might be a bit more pleasing on the IV sensor(gen1) than even the II sensor.

x-trans 2 is my favourite. I love the punchy contrast and slide film look. I also prefer my skies to be blue more than green as seen with the x-trans 1. I would probably end up cooling my whitebalance down too much trying to get blue sky in the x-pro 1, and then making everyone's skin too cold. The newest sensors look a little too warm and like they're struggling with skin tonality especially in the highlights on your foot.

@Kim_Alexander
@Kim_Alexander Месяц назад
this is probably a boring answer but they are all good.. And in practice if you put on the the same lens on every sensor your not going to notice any differences that mathers.. There is some though who says that x-trans 3 is softer. Personally I'm not sure I agree with that. The x-trans 5 though remind me of a medium format look where the amount of details are high but without that digital sticky sharpness. Thats why the x-trans5 is my favorite sensor. It feels slightly like gfx or even the digital backs I used in the early days of digital photography. Regarding tonal range x-trans 1 only outputs a 12bit color yet. I feel like the luma range is the same as any other x-trans sensor. Out of my experience with all this sensors and using them in real world situations , shooting around 20 tb of fuji images the last 4 years i can't really give you a good answer. It's to technical for me and I don't think it would affect my shooting experience or choice of gear in any way.

On the first test with the sky, I really don't think the later cameras look magenta, I think Xtrans1 looks yellow/orange. This might be where people think it looks "filmic", because when a photo is washed out by those tones, it gives a "vintage" feel.
@Kim_Alexander
@Kim_Alexander 9 месяцев назад
thanks for your comment. There is defently more magenta in the sky of the newer sensos. This a think for new sensors in general. This is simply because blue and purple wave lenght of light are near each other so the sky have tones of magenta witch newer sensors picks up bether. Its not like the sky look magenta they just have a slight tint of magenta. I order to manipulate this I change the tint. Witch adjust the balance between green and magenta witch is opposite of each other in the Cmyk / rgb spectrum. Therefore it's not yellow tones that are more dominant. Witch we also can see by looking at the green leafs and grass witch actually leans more towards yellow than actual green. This is one of the reeaon why some call it more filmic since alot of analog film in menay situations leans more towards a green tint

x-trans 1 and 2 are not the same sensor. Fuji added phase detection and 14 bit raw with the x-trans2. The first generation cameras also host a different prosessor than the second. Even if the cameras are built upon the same sensor from the shelf Fujifilm classify them as two different sensors I shot with fixed value WB and Exposure as mentioned in the film. I was always told the X-Trans II is the best for film like colors. Where the newer X-Trans III has exaggerated colors and IV have better Ture to real life colors. I have a XT3 and wonder if I should have bought a XT1 since I don't plan to use the 4k video or hybrid functions that are on the XT3. Folks may say who cares, but when you dive into the color science of other manufactures, I think Fuji color science look to be more realistic to what I see in real life. Canon and Sony colors do not appeal to me, and Nikon and Fuji do. I don't know why, but when I see Nikon or Fuji picture I feel more at home with color and just prefer it over the others.
@Kim_Alexander
@Kim_Alexander 5 месяцев назад
when It come to fuji the sensors that stands out in my opinion is, the first and and x-trans5 the later for that some of that refined softness yet high details like you would see on a medium format sensor. Film like I don't know, what film stock are you talking about? It's nothing like a kodak portra but perhaps similar to something else. But in all honesty film and digital is fundamentally different. I would rather use an xt3 over an xt1 I don't mind that slightly more refined AF Regarding colors Fuji stands out for its consistency something that other brands that I not Hasselblad or Leica don't do. the difference between different models are quite big. one of my all time favorite camera is Nikon Df, yet the classic Canon 5D has a unique character as well something that the 6Dmk1 got to. Then we have the Nikon D700 with a fundamentaly different sensor made by Panasonic and a unique character. Comparing these 4 cameras to the other camera even from the same years shows a big difference within the brand. Sony in the other hand have a bad rep for Magenta tints. However the first A7 is an interesting exception and later down the road with the release of the A7iv the nailed the colors pretty well, while. A7ii & A7iii was not so good. , The issue is that this cameraa have computer like feeling in the hand. The rabbit hole is deep when it comes to colors when it comes to fuji I think that it don't matter they are all great and share simular recepts simulating all kinds of film. stocks. Some newer models. makes this better since you have more refined control hiwe highlights witch ia good since negative film is knowed for great highlight retention. You also have the ability to give your custom setting a unique name so you remember what the simulation is.
