@@Jorge-Perez I really enjoyed the experience and being able to travel with a smaller, discreet camera (I had the black version) was liberating. The manual focus is ok with focus peaking. Like you said in your X100 review, treat it like a film camera: you know you'll miss a few shots, but the trade off is that you slow down and think much more deliberately about composition/moments, which is a skill that's worth honing

Agreed! it's the gift that keeps on giving 😂 I don't use my X100V as often, mainly because I need to test and use the gear I review extensively, but also because there is a clear/noticeable difference between the new and older sensors (at least to me). Totally agree, a variation of the back button focusing basically. For me using the AF-L is the best way to properly focus, wait for subjects to walk into the frame or quickly recompose. Works very well. How's the X-E1+18mm combo treating you? and have you considered using the 27mm lens? I think it's similar in size and compactness. @@Jorge-Perez combo works just fine for me, supposedly the 18mm isn't too sharp, but its sharper than the kit at 18mm at 2.8, and gets a stop brighter. I'm more of a 28mm guy anyway. I had a 30mm (45mm equiv) back when I shot with a NEX5T, and it was too close for me, I like to get more of the scene, and often I'm indoors standing closer to something so wider works better. You can get decent blur if you are close to something and the background is far with the 2.0. The only thing is to keep humans center ish to avoid them being distorted on the edges. but that sorta happens naturally anway.

I still own the XE-2 and 18/2.0 and the 27/2.8 27/2.8 is apparently more compact and makes the XE-2 a X100 alike. But I personally think the images from 18/2.0 have more "perspective" feelings. 27/2.8 images are kind of flat. I am not sure if it is because my skill is not enough to squeeze the best quality from both.

Like you I thought it was because of the limitations of my own abilities. When I used to shoot film and also with my smartphone, I like the wide angle perspective of a 28mm equivalent and your comment plus the previous comments are gold in helping me make a decision, so thank you!

Well, it's so affordable that you might want to pick one up and just leave it as a specific simulation camera, or B&W only or JPEG only, etc. The back button does work with the X-E1 so that's great, you may feel right at home with it, The only somewhat negative (at least compared to the X-pro2 o other cameras of the same gen) is the focus peaking, If you mainly want to use manual lenses or manual focusing, then the X-pro2 is so much better. I own this little one as well. Even it is not as sharp as XF series, but I think it has a very "film like" color and less "digitalized", which I like it so much. It is amazing they can produce such good quality body and lens in such low price.

@@pitiwong1 I compared it side by side with my A7c and so long as I used custom white balance on the A7c, they produced near identical colors. The level of detail was easily 2x on the A7c, though. Which to me is a home run for Fuji. Like a decade ago they were putting out an aps-c camera that can ride with a FF camera from 2019. I ended up having to return my X-E1 due to dead pixels. Picking up an x-e3 next month and super excited to get back into the Fuji ecosystem.

Interesting to hear your thoughts, I find the peaking very lacking on the X-E1, and I am curious to hear if you have any issues with it in fast-paced scenarios like weddings. I guess the flash can be helpful for things like that, but my focus on my camera reviews and on this channel is always street/documentary photography, so I refuse to use a flash 😂 It's good to hear other people's experiences with the camera and how it can be more flexible depending on your photography type. @@Jorge-Perez growing up, my introduction to photography was sports photography on an old rebel. With everything fully manual, I definitely developed that skill of quick anticipation for finding focus. Also, with it being in black and white on the Gen 1 sensor, I'm not worried about it being pristine. I have the xt2 and xt30 for nailing that digital perfection. More capturing a mood and adding nostalgia to a gallery with it. I do appreciate your video and you definitely have some great views on such a cool camera!

I have not used the X-M1, but I would say that on paper looks very similar to the other fuji fist x-trans cameras, sensor and image qualitywise, that being said you do lose the viewfinder, dials and knobs (I don't see a dedicated shutter dial, maybe there's a customizable dial on the top right side of the body?). The viewfinder is something that I particularly need, I absolutely hate staring at a screen while taking photographs, the viewfinder lets me concentrate and get "in the zone" if that makes sense. If you need dials and a viewfinder while still trying to keep your setup as compact as possible, then the X-E1 might be the best bet for you, if you don't need any of that and you just want a pocketable camera, then the X-M1 or the X-A1 might be the right choice. What do you value the most for the cameras that you have? that might help you indicate what's the thing that you need. Thanks for watching and for taking a moment to share your experiences. @@Jorge-Perez The X-Pro2 is everything I want in a camera; it's X-Trans III rather than II, not quite the jpg colours of first gen but has Classic Chrome, which I use with colour +2. I still have a lot of love for the old X-E1, though, and I still enjoy the slower experience from time to time. Cheers!

I 100% agree about the difference in Image quality and tones, I was skeptical at first, initially, I wondered how much of it was just people repeating something that they heard before and how much of it was actually true? but it's so noticeable to me that I don't feel like using my X100V that often. Interesting to hear about your experiences, how was shooting with the M3? I've always wondered what's like to shoot with Leica cameras 🤔 And doing street photography as a team sounds like a really fun experience! @@Jorge-Perez I have sort of a love/hate relationship with Leica film rangefinders. They are exquisitely built and just the tactile feel of the controls is a joy. Once you learn how to focus they can be lightning fast to achieve focus, but it is always focus/recompose. Shutter noise is but a whisper and I have used mine in situations on TV and movie sets where that was a requirement. There are quirks that requires accepting. The M3 doesn't have a rapid rewind like newer M cameras. Loading and unloading can be tedious, especially when compared to my Canon film cameras with quick load. For me, though, the Fuji E series has almost all the charm of my M3 in a modern form. They are almost exactly the same size. I feel I'm producing work with them at least as good as my M3 work. I did look at digital Leica, but I can't justify spending that much. I'm glad I went with Fuji E cameras instead.

@@Jorge-Perez Tran 1 sensors as you mentioned in the video definitely has a magic to it. The built in flash contrary to comment is actually quite handy. To avoid harshness, one can manual tilt and hold the flash to point at the ceiling.

I agree with you, especially the focus peaking with the X-E1/X-Pro1, it's less than ideal. I think it's enough for using manual lenses every now and then and having fun, but if you plan to shoot exclusively with manual lenses, then these cameras will be a headache. I still have my X100V, so in terms of the shooting experience, I think that is the best for me and my photography style, I just don't enjoy the look of the files, feels a little off and very digital to me. When I look back at all my best photos or the ones I like the most, are mainly X100T & X100F images. I'm considering what my options are, not only for me as a shooter but also for the RU-vid Channel as well, I'm thinking about potentially reviewing all the cameras, It takes time, I have to sell cameras before I buy other ones, but I think I might be done reviewing the first-gen cameras for the most part. So I might continue with the x-pro2, x-e2, x100s, etc To be honest, I wanted to try more things and lenses, and that's why I don't use the x100v as much, but I keep going back to the same lens with every camera that I test, so maybe the x100 series is all that I need. And for the people that say that those are not "professional cameras", All the photography work that I have done professionally in the past, was with the X100T/F. I'm speculating at this point, but the X-pro2/X100F might be the sweet spot for people like me. I want the flexibility, speed, functionality and ND filter of the x100v or x-PRO4 (when it comes out) with the organic look of the first 2 x-trans sensors. 😂 Thanks for watching man, and for taking the time to share your thoughts as well, I really appreciate your support for the channel! 🙌🏼✨

@@Jorge-Perez if you want to do cameras by generation, I would really advise you to go with the sensor / CPU generation rather than the number on the camera. X100 is its own generation, nothing before nothing after First gen X-Trans 1 is X-Pro 1, X-E1 and X100S Second gen X-Trans II is X-E2, X-T10, X-T1 and X100T Third gen X-Trans III is X-E3, X-T20, X-T2, X-Pro 2, X-H1 and X100F Fourth gen X-Trans IV is X-T3, X-T30, X-T30II, X-E4, X-T4, X-Pro 3, X-S10 and X100V Fifth gen is only X-H2s for the moment, but I guess we'll see X-H2 and probably X-T5 as well in the future

@@Jorge-Perez The X-E1 is the only Fuji I've used where I find the peaking useful. On the others I've owned (X-T2, X-Pro2, and currently owned X-H1), noise is about as fine and prominent as the peaking dots making it hard to tell what's what. Not an issue on the X-E1. Add in the ability to punch in by pushing in the rear scroll wheel and I can nail focus no prob. The vid was both entertaining and useful. I always appreciate those who cover older cameras since they're still relevant and can be a blast to shoot with.

Yes, most of the in-camera settings apply to the JPEGs only, so if you're shooting raw you don't have to worry about those. That being said, I prefer shooting with intentionality, which means setting everything I want in-camera. I always get comments from people that shoot raw and preach that, but they seem to have forgotten what it means to forge the image that you want, from vision to execution, Of course, raw will always have its place and favour particular types of shooting, all I'm saying is that most people would be surprised about how good the JPEGs are if you master your settings and the craft. Which one do you prefer using more casually? the X-E1 or X-E4? I love the usability, speed, and overall build of my x100v, but I like the results from the older cameras. @@Jorge-Perez I applaud your intentional approach to creating the image in the planning and moments leading up to pressing the shutter. This is how we SHOULD be shooting. For me it starts with composition, judging the lighting and aperture - that may take me a while and I might choose various compositions and exposures for the scene but that’s usually all I do. Composition, lighting/exposure and aperture. You see I’m a photographer in my 50s and I started with a manual Praktica SLR that my parents bought me as a teenager because I loved photography. It had a 50mm f/1.8 lens (has because I’ve still got it and use it) and once you got your composition right the exposure guide came from a swinging needle in the viewfinder. Choose the aperture for image you want to create and then adjust the shutter speed dial get the needle where you want the exposure to be based on your judgement of the scene. Every image was very involving. Yes you should still shoot fast but the process involved thought. The reason why I’m still embedded with the digital negative (raw) is that history. I shot slide film (very little latitude to get the exposure wrong - you had to absolutely nail it in camera) and black and white film. I’ve still got all those positive slides and negative film stored and get them out on the light box from time to time or put them through the scanner. By my late 20s I had my own enlarger (still have it) and darkroom equipment for making my own prints. Here you learn the second part of the image making process in the darkroom. The exposure of the photo paper to the negative image on the enlarger bed. Adjusting that exposure to the image you want to create. Dodging and burning using your hand or fingers to give the paper different exposure on different parts of the image. Watching your black and white print come to life in the developer bath is something else. You see it’s a few years since I’ve done it, but even today I can get those negatives out and make a new print, a new version of the original negative 30 yrs after I took it. I’ve got digital negative raw going back 18yrs and I can do the same. I have a library of books dating back to the 80s where I can take a book from the shelf and re-read it. The book is the same but the experience is always a little different with the intervening years. As far as the X-E4 vs X-E1 experience goes, it’s early days yet but I’m carrying the X-E1 as I go about my daily business and take opportunities to make photos while I’m walking between meetings etc. the X-E4 naturally is much more responsive, particularly the AF. Most of my photography is landscape, architectural or street but this morning I was trying to photograph a black dog up close in a dark lane way. Unlike many animal he was being cooperative but the low light a the low contrast subject really was difficult for the X-E1 with XF 18mm f/2. All I had was that one dark eye to focus on and I got it in the end with just one photo but I know the X-E4 would have handled the AF better however the warm, contrasty from the E1’s sensor is lovely. And it’s fun. I shoot these cameras for their small, discrete form factor. My big Pentax K-1 full frame technically would do a better job. It has a broader dynamic range and is amazing in low light and detailed large 36mp images that is great for landscape, architecture, low light detail and it’s ergonomics frankly are better too, festooned with buttons for everything and feels great in the hand but it’s bit and obvious and it’s not suited to my casual street work. I love all my cameras for the different things they offer. One other thing I’d say about raw versus SOOC JPEG is that 15-20 yrs ago the in camera image processing wasn’t nearly as good as today. Even the raw converting software on computer was progressively getting better. Those 6mp raw files didn’t have the detail or dynamic range we expect today and the JPEGs were worse. Yes you had to nail the photo technically but sometimes the best version of the photo didn’t come until a better raw software came along. This was before Lightroom existed.

@@Jorge-Perez Thank you for your feedback! I totally agree, that one doesn't need high end technique, also if your are an advanced user. And additionally, elder gear might also offer specialties the newer ones don't, like a special look in the frames, This is for the X-E1 in my opinion, too. It is not so clinical, although you're using a good lens like the 23mm F2, which I also do mainly. But I love my funleader 18mm F8, which offers in the bnw mode a very analog and quirky look. Pergear offers also a good quality I believe after using the 35f1.6 and the 10f5.6 fisheye. Also adapting vintage lenses is great altough the focus peaking is not ideal with the X-E1, but gives a very meditative experience. Yeah, I agree, the peaking can be stressful, especially if you mainly shoot with manual lenses. But for using it every now and then, I find it okay. @@Jorge-Perez yes actually. I bought an xt1 with less than 1800 shutter clicks with a 7art 35mm 1.4 for 300. I figured i would give the xtrans ii another try. I love this camera. I had one a few years ago and im very happy with the image quality.

@@Jorge-Perez My Fuji is in excellent condition. Almost new because I am very careful! Thanks for your videos. They are excellent and relevant. People's problem is that they are persuaded to take better photos because they have the latest camera on the market. You have to know your camera well and shoot again and again. It is better to invest in photo lenses. Best 🙂

That camera is a trooper! haha, these are quite cheap nowadays, so it might be a good idea to keep that as a memento and just get another X-E1. And that's partially how I feel about my X100V, I love the camera, I love using the camera, the speed, the build quality, how reliable it is, the weather sealing, etc, But I don't really enjoy the results from it. I know some people out there shoot only raw and perhaps they can eventually get the look that they want in post, but in my case, I shoot and get what I want in-camera. So the older sensors have a magic that is hard to describe. If only we could get a camera with the responsiveness and beauty of the x-pro3 or x100v with the image quality of the first x-trans sensor 😂 Thanks for watching! @@Jorge-Perez X-E1 helped me to re-discover joy of photography once again. Since I got this camera I practically NEVER leave the house without it. Which I can not say the same about GFX50R. By the way it’s like X-E1 on steroids - everything just bigger but very similar form factor and user experience. I would love to bring GFX50R with me everywhere I go - but I’m afraid to do so because it’s an expensive beast. Definitely the quality of the images is different - more resolution, more details, more tonal gradation. I thought I’ll love the images produced by GFX right away. But somehow surprisingly they just don’t excite me that much. They are kind of sterile and more digital. At least with my GF50mm/F3.5 Perhaps another lens (like GF80mm/F1.7) would open the potential of this camera in different way. Its an amazing photo camera. And it’s one of the “cheapest” options if you want to get into digital medium format. It’s great for commercial work for sure. But I use it for documentary work and I wanted that “medium format look” and film feel. I’ll try to adapt some vintage full frame lenses to it - it might mellow the image. • However browsing through my X-E1 photos I realize every time - you just can’t beat how X-Trans gen1 sensor beautifully renders photographs. (GFX btw is not X-Trans sensor, it’s made by Sony and used in Fujifilm and Hasselblad 44mmX33mm medium format cameras)

Agreed, I think it's fine to use manual lenses every now and then, but if you're planning to use this camera primary with manual lenses, then yeah the peaking will be very frustrating to use. I think the sweet spot may be the Second gen cameras, X-pro2, X-e2, etc. might continue with the reviews until I go through all of these cameras 😁 Thanks for watching, man! I pretty much gave up on focus peaking with the E1. I press the back button to zoom to set focus. I'm an old film photographer and learned some focusing tricks along the way.

Interesting hack/tip! And I agree with you about the falloff, It's hard for me to get punchy/contrasty photos with my x100v, even exposing for the highlights doesn't necessarily achieve that look. The beauty of these older cameras is that they match how I like to shoot, get everything in-camera, don't edit the files, and shoot with intentionality. I'm sure some people disagree and think I'm leaving a lot of image quality on the table because I'm not playing with curves and doing some heavy editing, but I'll let my photographs speak to that. @@Jorge-Perez I don’t edit my Fuji photos at all. I focus on composition, light and content.

Mainly the Fujicrons, the 23mm f2, the 35mm f2, and not the 7artisans 25mm f1.8 for manual focusing. The fujicrons work great and definitely help with the focusing speed of older cameras. Yeah just got it used from someone, but you can also find it in several camera stores here in Canada as well. They do add a little premium to the price, for cleaning, checking it and giving you 3 months of warranty, but you can find it a lot cheaper in the used marketplace. @@Jorge-Perez hi! at first I was hesitant to do conversion on my trusty xe1, that is why I bought a $100 xe1 to my friend and had it converted to full spectrum for $120 and buy IR filter for different results.. now i'm so happy and my one xe1 can rest for awhile🤣.

X-E1 for sure, the A5 does not have an X-trans sensor, which defeats the entire purpose of owning one of the X series cameras. If you're looking for something affordable maybe consider an X-70 or XT-10, hope that helps! Thanks for watching and for sharing a comment as well! Cheers 🙌🏼✨

Depending on where you live, places like B&H Photo, KEH camera, and others work well in North America. Here in Canada places like Henrys & The camera store also have used equipment from time to time. But realistically, finding these cameras and low prices are most likely on the used marketplace online. I have a dedicated video of camera stores in Japan if you ever plan to visit, Hope that helps! Funny thing I had the same way. I owned X-E1 many many years ago. After long journey with many cameras (incl. full frame cameras) i bought last year X-E1 with XC35 plus X100 1 gen. Now I do not feel any reason to follow new cameras. Love the pictures out of the camera, love the in-camera raw converter.

I agree with you about saving some cash, I think that is an accurate summary of the current camera landscape, get the speed and ease of use with the new cameras (X-pro3, X-T4 etc) or image quality and fun factor with older cameras (x-pro1 or x-e1 etc). I have the X100V, and I've been using it less and less since I started reviewing older fuji cameras, mainly because I need to use the cameras I review as my first main camera for months at a time, but also because I don't necessarily love the look and results of the clean clinical new sensors. I want the look of the X-Pro1/X-E1 with the speed, reliability and ease of operation of the new cameras 😂 How's your X-E1 treating you? curious to hear your thoughts. @@Jorge-Perez love both. For sure X-E1 is faster and smoother in operation. On the other hand X100 is very universal, leaf shutter and built-in nd filter are very helpful. As per image quality the X100 in black&white (not only but...) is hilarious. The great is thing how great pictures you can get from both with built-in raw developer. I do not need any editors such like Lightroom. I have had about 20 cameras (mirrorless and dslr) in last 10 years. Come back to X-E1 made me extremely happy

@@Jorge-Perez This video was like my first touch with this camera. More vids would be very helpful. Your basic settings are great. And I am trying to test most of the recipes I can find. But using the B/W+Y simulation brings me back to my analogue times. I started loving fotography with a used Canon AE-1 in 1986. A teacher at school offered a fotography working group. We had a darkroom and he always got expired Ilford Pan 400 films from local dealers. That's how it started. The X-E1 brought me back to this times. Analogue look, but "modern" technique. If you want to see samples, I can send you a link. Next I'll try to find is the XF27 Pancake. But it is even used expensive... Cheers!

Agreed! I recommend the snappier Fujicrons F2, just to try to offset the slow autofocusing speeds. But most lenses work great, manual lenses are decent enough If you can get around the peaking of the camera. Which lenses are you shooting with? Interesting to hear your thoughts... thanks for sharing. I ended up reviewing this camera because I think more options are a good thing, and I will probably end up reviewing every gen of Fuji cameras 😂 I've been planning to give capture one a try, but most of my images (90% or so) are not edited at all, everything is captured in-camera, including the simulation, aspect ratio, etc. So I really don't spend a lot of time editing images. But constantly learning and evolving is a good way to approach the craft, so I'll give it a try at some point. I know there are some cheaper fuji options out there, but I need a viewfinder 😂 can't shoot without it, I absolutely hate taking photos with the back LCD screen, that's the reason why I returned my brand new X-T3 almost 2 years ago, I rather have a rangefinder-style viewfinder. And last but not least, yeah prices are going up, every single camera is going up, and every single camera is out of stock. Right now a used X100V goes for a higher price than a brand new one did a year ago, and the same thing goes for the X-E4. Everything is sold out, everything is out of stock, and people just jack up the price like crazy. @@Jorge-Perez Hi Jorge, yes. The semiconductor crisis. Hopefully comes to an end into 2023... Everything is getting more expensive. Sad, but true. I need a viewfinder, too. Can't work with a phone as "camera", it's only good for the casual or unexpected shot. But no experience like real gear, when you set your aperture, your iso, and shutterspeed. ;-) The X-T3 is still king into 2022+, a fine DSLM. But i am quite happy with my T1. Way good enough, does all what i ever need. No fancy video features, too. I only shoot pictures, not video. ever. :-) Keep up the fine reviews, Jorge ! A great day, Marc

Great to hear your perspective and how others see the points that I make, thanks for sharing! I think in general, I talk about my experiences, how I learned & how I do things. That being said, I do agree with you that this way is not compatible with everyone. I think that the very few people that watch and enjoy my videos, understand that this is just how I do things, not necessarily how things should be. I have played with the raf's before, so I understand what these files are capable of, but I have never used raw files in professional shoots and paid work. I simply choose not to, it's not for me, shooting the way I do creates accountability and accelerates the learning curve, I mention this in detail in my street photography philosophy video. My training comes from a decade of working in the film industry, where you meticulously think about every aspect of the frame and craft the image that you want, In cinema you control the light, the weather, the actors, the script, everything. Shooting with intentionality is key. And that is how I approach my photography work, although funny enough, with street photography I don't control the light, the weather, the subjects or their actions, The one thing I control is the settings, and what my vision is, and Raw files hinder that process. I choose the aspect ratio before I take the photos, I don't crop in post, I choose the simulation recipe before I take the photo, I don't believe in dragging and dropping a B&W lut onto a colour image. It's not elitism, It's just the way I like to shoot, with intentionality. What I'm looking for is, understanding, what do I want to capture? What do I want my photographs to look? What memories I want to create? If beginners make mistakes and mess up their files, (like not exposing properly or similar things) and can't magically fix the photo because they don't have a raw file, then they will never forget that mistake, accountability like that accelerates the learning curve. It not the cameras fault, the weather, the moon, it's their fault, they need to master the settings. Regarding the flash, I think it comes down to the type of photography you are doing and your needs. My focus is mostly street/travel photography, so I would never use a flash for that. But if you're shooting in studio, portraits, product photography, or just a nice photo of your family, kids or pets, then I understand why it could be beneficial to have a flash. Other than that, I would never use it, even if you paid me. A great tip for people that find themselves in that situation or have the same approach, thanks for sharing! For me, however, it's a no-go. With my street photography/travel photography, cinematography and composition are everything, and a flash gets in the way of that goal. But I can totally see your tips working for people that want to shoot that way, or just for family photos, etc. Thanks for watching and for sharing your thoughts as well! The X-M1 also seems like a great choice, I personally like having a viewfinder, but I could see the X-M1 being very popular and getting great images as well. @@Jorge-Perez I really liked the images together with XF35MM1.4 and 7artisans 35mm1.2 mark2 aswell. I think when I'm finished with my one-camera-one-lens-one-year project I will glue on the 7artisans 35mm1.2 mark2 on it and make it my pure monochrome camera
