Ye Wenjie turned into a complete cult leader and an easy girl who would sleep with anyone after just two glances. Where has my charming BIGSHI gone? Where did the shot of the nuclear bomb go? Where did the money go? Is this all Operation Guzheng? Slow and rough like a B-movie The artistry of the original work has disappeared, just smells like American fast food
I agree. The Double, one of my favorite books by the Portuguese novelist Jose Saramago. It was adapted into a film called Enemy by Denis Villeneuve. That's the only film that was equally as good as the book.
I like sci-fi especially sci-fi that can sell future technology and makes it believable... this show started off strong but went down the toilet pretty quickly.
I've read the Three-Body Problem and I'm nearly done with the Dark Forest, loving the books so far. I think I'm on episode 20 of the Chinese version, I like how they go into the theories and add more detail to what took place in the book. Right now I recently finished episode 7 of the Netflix version, and HOLY CRAP is it good. Despite the changes that were made in the show, they haven't affected the story in a negative way, because the plot is solid. While yeah, I was apprehensive at first, I watched a review done by Quinn's Ideas (the channel that introduced me to the Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy). The review has solidified my faith in the series, and I can't wait for the next season.
I am glad you liked it. I am watching it now, and I find it very different from the book. Which is fine, as it is engaging. But the book is much more profound. But Netflix show is for pure entertainment I guess.
@@NorthernDiariesI made it until episode 7 and just gave up midway. The series is horrible, the book was butchered but the worst is the dialogue. Holy crap does it cringe the soul out of me. I genuinely feel second hand embarrassment every time a character opens his mouth. Liam Cunningham did not deserve this nor any of the other (very few) good actors of the show.
I watched Three Body Chinese serie, and 1000000000% more times better as Netflix shi*t. Perfect proffessional cast, professional direction and special effects were top-level, in the series don't differentiate between genders, everything is measured and produced to the highest level. The series was an action-oriented opera. I watched the entire series in russian translation until the end. Netflix sucks whole masterpiece of China. The netflix version has no professional acting, directing, and effects, all of them are bad, and the series itself is based on feminists.
Usually, yeah. The only film that came close, in my opinion, is Enemy by Denis Villeneuve based on the book The Double, by the Portueguese writer Jose Saramago.
I have not read the books, but I have seen both the Tencent and Netflix adaptations. Where Tencent takes its time, Netflix condensed all the elements into a fast-paced show. Tencent builds on the mysteries in its 30-episode arc, ending with the destruction of Judgement Day. Netflix rushed through all the mysteries, gave us bullet points, and moved beyond destroying the Judgement Day ship. However, for me, I think Netflix managed to do a lot of things right while leaving us without any thrills or dreds. Netflix wanted this to be a banger, but in doing so, they missed out on a lot of the mysteries. I still like it, though. I am anticipating both shows to get their second season, hopefully.
I definitely prefer the Tencent version more. I like the Netflix version for visual effects and some of the historical stuff which were tame/ non-existant in the Tencent version.
I listened to them on audible & kept on having to relisten to segments to get my tiny brain round it, they are fabulous & book 2 is my favourite. Greetings from Yorkshire & I'm very happy you are making content again. Many thanks
Yes. Book 2 is my favorite too. I remember I was reading The Dark Forest in a railway station in China, waiting for the train. When the Dark Forest theory was explained, I had gooseflesh, and I looked up at the sky from the railway station's window. I felt so much that I couldn't put it into writing. I love it when a book or any art does that to me. And, thank you for your support. I will make regular content from now on :)
Judging from the trailer, my worst fear may have come true: the coolest and interesting concepts have been taken away from the Chinese, while the disgusting and trouble-making concepts have been left to the Chinese characters. I don't say any speculation about racism, but at least there is insufficient respect for this book and its author Liu Cixin.
I can't comment on the race aspect of it. But one thing that made the book special for me, is how deep rooted it is in Chinese culture. Already from the trailer I can see that that won't be the case. I understand on some level. Netflix doesn't want to alienate global audiences, but then why choose this book. I don't want to comment too much, since I'd like to give it the benefit of the doubt. Let's see tomorrow :)
If I may, respectfully-- Please don't assume that racism is present with zero evidence. This does a huge disservice to Chinese people who are fans of the book, fans of the Tencent adaptation, and fans of the Netflix adaptation as well. Have you spoken to any Chinese folks about this adaptation? Are you aware that the book's author, Cixin Liu, has given his blessing to the Netflix adaptation to internationalize the cast, and is totally onboard with what Netflix is doing? If you care so much about Chinese representation in media-- have you watched the Tencent version? Do you even care what actual Chinese people think?
@@DarkMatterElixirsHi - I am not sure if your response is for me or the original commentor. Your response is exactly why I said I cannot comment on the race aspect of it since I don’t know. Also, yes, I have been living in China for many years and this is a topic of discussion with me and my friends for awhile now. I have seen all of Tencent’s adaptation, which I thought was fairly close to the book. Faithful adaptation except for some of the sensitive historical stuff. I am still skeptical about the Netflix show despite if Liu Cixin gave his blessings. It is highly ambitious and an extremely abstract. That being said, I will be glad if the show succeeds. We need more hard sci fi
@@DarkMatterElixirs the Netflix adaptation is out. If you have think to say? Regarding the race of the characters? This is a U.K western cast with diversity, not international. Sense8 is an internationalize story and cast. In 3 body problem only in ep8 that we finally got USA and some others countries alliances/involvement. Like the others 2 unimportant Wallfacers. Before that we got only glimpse of the others countries like Japan. Ironically enough the supposedly "international version" isn't any bigger in scope than the books modern China storyline. We should stop gaslighting others that the Netflix adaptation s1 is a better global story because it is now locate in U.K instead of China.
@@snowshock8958well, i was responding to the parent comment which brought up the issue of racism. I think that's a totally ignorant and foolish take. @zhizhiwang-cx4sy was the commenter I was responding to. Let's not get too off-track here. Anyone who thinks the netflix version of 3BP is racist against the Chinese is at least somewhat ignorant. NETFLIX WAS NOT PERMITTED TO SET THEIR VERSION OF THE SHOW IN CHINA. THEY WERE NOT ALLOWED TO FEATURE A FULL CHINESE CAST. And that's a good thing. This was not netflix's decision, but China's, because Tencent did not want the Netflix version to be too similar to their version, out of fear that the netflix version would steal viewers from the Tencent version. So Cixin Liu and Tencent were totally on board with Netflix internationalizing the cast -- but of course Ye Wenjie's backstory had to remain Chinese -- also out of respect to Cixin Liu. Anyone who accuses the Netflix version of "whitewashing" or "erasing" the Chinese element of the story is, frankly, extremely misinformed or blinded by ideology. But if what you're getting at is the distinction between "international", "western" and "global," then in my opinion we've lost the plot. It is impossible to actually represent an "international" vision of anything that actually includes every nation in this world. Anyone who thinks they can achieve is simply ignorant of the true diversity of the human race, and the sheer number of different cultures/peoples out there. You mention Sense8 as international? Well I say i don't give a flying fuck about that show, if the cast being international is viewed as one of its assets - they don't acknowledge my home country. Very few films/TV shows ever do. So I don't really much care for those labels, as I find them painfully inadequate in almost all cases. "Global" might be the best term here -- the cast comes from a wide range of *places* globally. In short, the Netflix show may be flawed in terms of pacing and have some issues with the adaptation from Liu's vision, but in terms of racial diversity/representation it couldn't have been done any better, and I'll debate anyone who thinks otherwise.
I completely agree. Netflix did what they always do and make everyone black, brown and gay for no reason. They abandoned all the complexity and cultural foundation to the story. The show is a shallow, dei hollywood watered down flop.
Wonder what Mandarin version 2023 three body is like. Saw some but didnt have patience for subs right yet. Im still watching Netflix version do may go back to it once im done. I think its more like the book
This is my favorite book of all time. Three Body Problem by the Chinese science fiction author Liu Cixin. When I first read this book many years ago, I felt like my mind was forced open to inject new way of thinking. I've always thought it can't be made into a movie or a TV show. It is better left as a book. I've decided to share my thoughts on my favorite book, being made into a Netflix show. Have you read this book?
I completely agree, I think they would have to simplify to much and drop a bunch of characters and plot points to cover such an intricate story. I think it will be visually stunning and I look forward to being proven wrong but I don't have a lot of hope for this one... but we'll see!
Watched the first two episodes, they made it much dumber than the book. They removed most of the side characters, most of the sci-fi portion was replaced with no explanation at all, they made every person there younger or female or otherwise "diverse", added their stupid western politics to it, and of course everyone is fucking each other or trying to. It's just sloppy and feels like the creators of the show did not read the books but only a wiki page about them.
My read on your review is if they cannot nail every part of the three novels in a 8 part season one of an ongoing series they have failed? It is a three novel series and they are making a multi season TV series out of the trilogy of novels. I think you are setting too high expectations.
Yeah, I wasn’t talking about just the first season. The whole show in general with the multiple seasons. It’s more of a doubt. I still can’t imagine how they would visualize what happens in the third book.
Basically they did what Netflix and Game of Thrones guys do: flushed great book in a toilet. Except Li Wen Jie story arch ( even though her motivation is changed from the book ) all the rest is dull and unnecessary changes to fulfill modern agenda.
It's not about visual vs words. The ideas in the book and some of the themes are hard to represent visually. So, anyone who's not reading the books are missing out. But that being said, I am happy that this is reaching more people.
