Definitely the last two I need some time to digest and work on. Actually, you should probably not publish any new videos for a month or so while I work through this one. LOL, just kidding (about you pausing of course). Amazing video for terminology, analysis, and tips.
Definitely no4. The hip rotation. Probably not textbook but my no1 takeaway thought is turn my trail hip back and up. The shoulders seem to follow automatically giving me depth. Following on is keeping my arms well extended in the backswing. These two elements have helped me to bring a more powerful and consistent strike. Cocking my wrists and trying to develop lag is another plus for me. Thanks for the insights 👍
Club is maybe too open at top of backswing and too steep in downswing… will try slightly stronger grip and the club shallowing drill that you demonstrated!
This guy just perfectly explained every important part of the swing. It took me 5 years to figure this out lol. Everyone should bookmark this video and any time you’re having trouble with your swing Watch the video until you figure it out. I guarantee the answer to your problem will be in this 10 minutes.
Giles, it's your resident spokesman back with you again. A comment by Bryan Gonzakes says it all. He states emphatically that your videos are like a $1,000 lesson. That might even be understating it!! Your drill in this video with the elastic band is a wonderful idea. An even better one you gave in a previous video was "The Belly Button Drill," attaching the butt end of the club to your belly button and extending back past parallel. This, as you stated, steadies the players head but also generates an INSANE amount of coil. After achieving this dynamic backswing position, it is easier for the kinetic chain to flow naturally. Your extra emphasis on having the player adjust their grip will bear fruit for those with "opposing " Another marvelous video. In my opinion, you have raised the bar in on-line instruction.
This video is crazy comprehensive. It covered all the issues I had at many points of my golf swing throughout the years. Hope everyone watches and learns from this!
No kidding. It made me want to buy an online lesson from him. He explains concepts relatively quickly without tons of fluff or blabbering which makes this video awesome. I'm very impressed with this lesson.
Thanks for the tips Giles. You’ve covered something I’ve not come across before and I’ve been watching videos on golf tips for 2 months now. I’ll be taking this out onto the range in a couple of days.
I did the chopstick drill for about 5 minutes at the range before playing- very helpful. Also the big move, and it was very simple , was moving my grip more to the base of my fingers away from the palm. My club face is now more square. I hit some very solid irons in todays round- I have been around the 80-82 scoring range- today was 77 due more to my iron play. Today was close to 50% GIR - I have been averaging 31%. Keep the great videos coming Giles- I have a renewed fervour for the game. Excited.
Loved this video, great drills. I just had an incredible range session I noticed much more consistent contact. My favorite tip was when rotating feeling the right hip travel up it seemed to make my transition effortless and improve my tempo as well. Thanks!
#5 shallowing drill is so simple and a great way to promote correct feels and mechanics. Keep the instructional videos coming. Have a great day Giles. 👍
I love the straight to the point approach, so sick of having to fast forward 5 minutes in to get anything interesting, thank you. I would like to see a rotation video.
hello First video I watched of yours, very grateful, because of the 5 reasons, there was one, which was the one that was destroying the game, since I reviewed videos of my game on the field and there was that error, thank you very much, may you receive many blessings for the good you do, already subscribed, greetings from Caracas, Venezuela, Pedro
@@Gilesgillgolf Hello, do you have a video on how to correct hitting behind the ball, sometimes it happens to me on the course two or three times and the club falls a little back in the backswing, like John Daly, thank you and good luck, I am handicap 14
Need to practice all , do you rotate the chest not with the arms ? Also get stuck in the downswing my legs get planted and think the need be twisting up ward ? Your videos are very well explained , thanks
Great video I’ve been joyed your work, a lot… The biggest problem I’m having after a round of golf is my left hip joint is absolutely killing me. Not sure what I’m doing on the finish of my rotation to create such pain. Is that something you think you can help with.
Thank you! You’ll be shifting too lateral in the downswing and stressing the hip joint. Work on rotating open to no stress the hip. My next video will help a lot too
Nice discussion! I think my problem might be lack of depth. I’ve mostly solved the width issue. Feeling the weight of the club head in the shallowing is intriguing. Appreciate the explanations and the corrective drills.
for me its definitely the straight arm and the depth -- but I have also noticed that the first move from the top where I concentrate on nothing else but swallowing the club, has made me much more consistent even if my arm isn't straight even if I have little depth-- now I'm excited to go out there and try and work on all these techniques
My biggest problem is during the downswing I often feel I’m too close to the ball, so to get the club to impact with a straight left arm, I instinctively “back away” (early extension). I have 35” arms (which might have something to do with it) I find it difficult to rotate just before impact and tilt to raise my left shoulder as you prescribe. Thanks 🙏🏻 and keep up the good work
Love this video Giles and also your rotation video. I am confused about the tip on poor shaft pitch when you advocate turning the left thumb clockwise - does this not open the club face - it’s like rolling the wrist open?
@@Gilesgillgolf So I think I understand the thumb was indicating the feeling for the forearm but the wrists remain more vertical with thumb pointing more to the sky ?
@@davidmarshall6941 no you let the thumb go with it. You’re just allowing the shaft to move into a shallower position. You can use your wrist to open, close or keep the face square from that position. Just depends how you move them
Rotation is major. Collapsing arms would be my major fault. I use a closed stance & this summer I was experimenting with a closed trail shoulder too. When I went back to level shoulders I started to pull the ball left again. As far as rotation goes, I would be interested in your thoughts on closed stance & closed shoulder & their effect on rotation.
Hi mate I seem to take the club away fairly well but start to cup my lead wrist ever so slightly and open the face making it hard to square on the way down. Any ideas I have a neutral right hand and strong left (right handed player)
Finally someone who explains fully why actions and movements matter - so many coaches try to over simplify things so you don't learn to think about cause and effect.
This is the most comprehensive explanation of the golf swing that I have come across. Yet simple and lucid. I had abandoned the range as a fruitless exercise but now I feel I can revisit it with a sense of purpose. Greatly appreciate.
I think I've started getting some hip rotation just recently, though I haven't had anyone look at it to check. What seems to be helpful to me is to get so twisted around that I have no choice but to "unwind", so to speak. I think #4, depth, seems to be the closest to that. Getting a good result also depends a lot on keeping the left arm straight, which seems to be #3, width. Interestingly, it was compression that I was trying to work out that led me to this point. I'm a senior golfer.
I think I finally understand what is meant by “dropping the club in slot”, which is a tip I heard but was confused. The changing and lowering of the shaft pitch on the down swing was never something I ever did, preferring to robotically keep everything in the same plane top to bottom (and required hand strength). My question is whether your shoulders and hips are locked together through the rotation, or do the hips rotate first leading the shoulder rotation through the swing? Or put another way, is the source of rotational power through the swing coming from just your legs keeping trunk square, or does it also involve moving obliques?
Great vid. Thanks. But for the very confused like me, how do you rotate as advised in item 4 whilst, at the same time, keep your hands/arms/ club head in front of the ball - my arms appear to be dragged inwards and behind which I understand to be a no no.Thank you
The right elbow can easily fall behind and get stuck when dropping the club behind on initiating the downswing. Any tips on still keeping the arms in front of the chest and maintaining that triangle on the start of the downswing? Thank you!
Most of the time this is caused by poor arm structure at the top of the backswing. Then from there chances are you’ll be working the arm internal and steepening it
I do typically draw the ball. Wanted to focus on the lowering of the club at the onset of the downswing, you described. I noticed that there were times when I let my arms drop below parallel, I would hit behind the ball. Does think make sense as to why I was suddenly hitting behind the ball? I had to make sure the drop was subtle. Your teaching is terrific. Videos are simple, clear, and precise. I will continue to follow.@@Gilesgillgolf
Your prompt reply is amazing. Your comment seems spot on. I will make sure to rotate more and give myself more time to shift left. I always end on the left side, but sometimes I get there a bit late. @@Gilesgillgolf
Left arm doesn’t have to be straight but if it is excessively bending then focus on having clubface square, turning through impact and squeezing elbows together
I think the key to moving the. trail hip backward in the backswing is to try to push the trail foot forward while the foot is engaged in the turf and cannot move forward,. SO this action so moves the trial hip back.
Do you hit with your left hand or right or both? My trail hand is my dominant side and overtakes the downswing ruining what you’re teaching here. Any help in this area?
@@Gilesgillgolf grip is good, dominant right takes my path outside to in. I have to concentrate to swing with left arm/hand to bring it inside but I don’t feel any power that way.
If you throw your arms at the ball from the top the weight and force of gravity will outrace any chance to rotate in balance. Stand up to counter that force or fall over.
@@Gilesgillgolf I wrote " at the ball". That's the catch. What you describe as you rotate is great action but the problem as your video title describes is why you can't. I explained why you can't. You explained how you can. It's all good. Buts it's a fine line between great and horrible. Arm positioning is critical. For proper impact and rotation it's a bent up feel of the right arm at impact even though it's straightening rapidly. But for arms players who don't rotate correctly is gonna feel really bent. Like your hitting with the entire right side with a bent right arm.
I’m surprised nobody seems to look at the mental block reason. Perfect practice swing and then a jabed half follow through worrying about where the ball will go
