Last year, I published a video which focused on how the hips and pelvis function in the golf swing. This is a topic which I'm keen to spend time working on and speaking about, so this is an extension to the previous video. Take a listen as I dive deeper into the details and elaborate on key points.

Trust me. After playing the game for 25 years and countless lessons, this video and Harrington's advice on how to clear your hips/lower body and turn up/lift to finish is THE key to becoming a very good ball striker and consistent player. This is the key to the golf swing!!! No exaggeration! Paddy - thank you for sharing what countless pros and so called experts either don't want to or can't tell you

Padraig Harrington is creating the best series of golf instruction videos on the internet (I have watched hundreds). In addition to the exacting clarity of his tutorials, it is Padraig’s joy in golf that sets these videos apart. He has placed the crazy idea in my head that I can break 80!

I've played golf for a long time. I struggle with sliding my hips. I watched this video a couple of times and practiced in front of a mirror. Today I played, no warm up as the range was closed. I hit the driver great and it was longer. Iron play has always been a weakness. Irons were one club longer and I hit some really good shots. Paddy is now my teacher. This is the best video instruction I have used and I've use d a number of them and live teachers too over the years. I am going to own this technique and play good golf. Thanks Padraig! you are the best!

At the risk of being revoltingly sycophantic, our man demonstrates so many fab qualities when he says, "He told me, and I believed it - but it's only now I understand it." Padraig is a model of gratitude, curiosity, humility, hard work, creativity and balls. Can you imagine actually standing over a ten footer for the Big One - what a blast that would be :) Thanks Padraig; for someone trying to get the last few strokes off you're an incredibly articulate coach as well.

Padraig Harrington has always been cutting edge in his thinking and now in his teaching. He probably could have win more than three majors if he hadn't experimented so much. Or maybe that's why he won three majors! Experimentation within sound fundamentals make this great game even more fun. Now that he's on the Champions Tour, Paddy is tearing it up with plus 180 ball speed. Speed training and sound technique are the Golden ticket for every player. Nobody currently playing golf knows more about the swing than Padraig Harrington. Simple as that. Simple as his instuction.

This is mastery, manifesting experience of the inside forces and anatomical movements/relationships in the swing. It's like having Jigoro Kano explain a judo hip throw. Many teachers will show one or two parts of the motion, but they hardly ever connect the pieces for everyone to see at once and show how and why they're linked. Padraig doesn't have the time to do a 500 part series with a little snippet every three days, so here it is, the whole hip/torso shebang, with no ornamentation or distraction. Hips don't lie!

Paddy, I'm now 62 years old. Started trying to learn golf late in life (mid 20's) and was never able to play much at all over the next 35 or so years, due to work and familial commitments, and financial restrictions as well. I've recently been able to retire and now have the ability to play the game regularly, and so I've taken to really studying the game in every aspect that I can, via videos such as yours here on RU-vid. As a single man, I have a golf mat in my kitchen, which allows me to hit full shots into my living room, into two heavy woolen blankets hanging from a curtain rod. I've found that finding the top position of the backswing (for my body) is easy. It's everything that comes after, that tends to be difficult. Your video here has, I think (I need to take it to the driving range) unlocked the final piece of the puzzle that I was looking for, to get my "timing' just right. Thank you so much for making this video (and others; I'm now a subscriber), to help an entire world of duffers, play better golf. God bless ya' Paddy. Press on and play more great golf! You have a new #1 fan! :)

I have watched so many youtube videos on early extension. There are 100’s of them from ‘coaches’. Paddy doesn’t even know/ use the term ‘early extension’, but this is the most compelling and easily understood video of the issue. So good. What I love about this lesson is how Paddy explains the 'why' of these movements. I can't recall hearing an instructor say that you need to get the right hip higher because it facilitates the weight shift into the front leg. As someone who subscribed to the idea that you need to keep that right knee flex constant throughout the backswing, this video has been a revelation. Much appreciated.

Lot of respect for you Paddy! I'm on my way to 66. Last year I started prepping for retirement golf. I had not played regularly for years. Experimented and do the exact opposite of what you say. I actually bend my knees at address, then initiate my swing by bending my right leg more. The whole swing is leg driven. I play off the regular tees, have since I started playing regularly beaten my longest drives ever on many holes and succeed in breaking 80 now and then. I thought I must look odd but see many pros addressing the ball with bended knees and then bending the right more in the backswing. You preach what I suppose is textbook but there are many odd balls out there who do ok. Keep up the good work!

I would like to echo Brian's comment just below. I have played for over 50 years off 4 or 5 handicap for almost all of it and have never heard this level of clear analysis of what we should be trying to do (and WHY) with the hips, hip flexors, glutes, the right leg on the way back and on the way down, the left leg through impact and WHY you shouldn't just straighten the left leg at impact in an attempt to look like a good player .....unless you want a very sore back and knee surgery! Also his explanation of the hips staying CONNECTED to the upper body, but LEADING the upper on the downswing, while not racing so far ahead that they are completely disconnected is super-helpful. This is one of the great RU-vid golf gems. Brilliant Padraig, thank you.

I can say that I've shortened my backswing (shoulder issues) after fighting to lengthen it and thought I'd just have to live with hitting it shorter. NOT! I'm LONGER than I was ever and I'm 58 now. Why? Hip motion AND an under the plane (shallow) delivery aka Sergio. This hip rotation, bump to start downswing and the resulting shallow delivery is unreal how much more consistent I am and way longer. I'm 5' 7" 145 lbs and outdriving my 6' 220 lb buddy! I was legitimately asking him if he's playing crap balls or smth cuz he was pumping his drives but always behind me. I couldn't understand it. All I know is Paddy is bang on. Higher hip on backswing, little bump to start downswing, back to target as long as possible, shallow plane for club path and explode under, through and up. Damn wish I knew or was taught this decades ago! lol

This is an excellent explaination of the complex biomechanics involved in rotational movements. The most difficult thing for most people, experts included, is how to actually prepare an individual's body in a training or S&C scenario, to respect the mechanics of what is being explained in the above....if you think the mechanics of a squat, or a deadlift, magically translates to these rotational movements, you are well wide of the mark! The concept of the body coiling or the cross pattern connections of muscles from the upper body and lower body is trained most effectively using Functional Patterns....light years ahead of what most trainers/coaches/therapists use to address/prevent pain/injury or increase performace.

This is by far the best explanation of how the hips move during the swing on RU-vid. All these other “Pros” tell you to do the opposite of how he describes it. He also explains it in an easy to understand way along with what you should be thinking and feeling. Thanks Paddy 👏🏽👏🏽

I’m not at all surprised that Harrington is an excellent teacher. This is a very logical, organized, and effective lesson. What an effective communicator. Well done Sir!

Padraig, this is the first time in 12 years I’ve actually had my butt stay against a “wall.” This is literally the only video people need to watch to help with early extension.

Brilliant video. I had no idea Paddy was such a good teacher. Not only the how but the why. Great teachers can distill down to the critical elements to simply and demystify complex learning. I have watched thousands of golf videos and I. My opinion this is one of the best

These videos are great because they explain what’s happening behind the visual impression you see. For example, the left leg is straightened because the body has raised up, not the body is raised up because the left leg has straightened. Tanks, Paddy!
