The reason you go to a pro is you haven't watched enough RU-vid videos on doing it right the first time. Literally, cerakoted a handguard in my garage. And! Took off the anodizing before doing it. Because I'm RU-vid certified.

The reason why I'm doing it myself is 1) I have to Break it down anyways. 2) I have access to all the necessary equipment. 3) I'm not paying the same price as the gun to get your "pro" mill thickness 4) I'm not waiting 8-10 weeks to get my gun back.

I think what some folks misunderstand about the "professional" term isn't so much someone who does it for a living as it is someone who is competent. Cerakote isn't paint. If it's not sprayed correctly, it might as well not be there at all. Worse than that, now the original finish has been removed from your firearm, and has been replaced with an inferior substitute. I've seen projects come out of Cerakote shops that look like crap, and DIY stuff that is right on the money. Knowing what you are doing is the key. Good video.

If a person is reasonably intelligent, detail-oriented, has the proper equipment, and can follow directions they can do a decent Cerakote job. It's not that hard it's just something that you must take your time doing and get it right the first time. There are a bunch of instructional videos on youtube that can help you get it done. I only have a little home auto body experience and I have finished several rifles, scopes, bipods, and magazines that turned out great. Just watch a bunch of videos, follow instructions prep, prep, prep, and go for it. Start out with a couple practice pieces to get the hang of it.

C'mon! Obviously this guy wants to sew doubt in our minds so we can hemorrhage our money to him and let him do it! Why do it yourself for 100.00 when u can take it to an FFL, pay them a fee, let them ship it to Chad here then pay Chad 300-400 to do what u could have done at home, and have the satisfaction of a nice project. I cant understand the logic here😂😂😂

Gota keep em scared to DIY right? Hell I'm a Tattooer I know all about the "JOB SECURITY" approach. None the less 👍Thanks for the tips man.
@tattoojosh1
@tattoojosh1 3 года назад
@Egalitarian 4life Are you a troll???? Because it's very straight forward Got to keep them scared to DIY. Right??? If it's job security by keeping them scared to DIY, then clearly I am not encouraging anyone to DIY any tattoos. If you know anything about tattooing you would understand that China making it possible for any mindless party to get there hands on tattoo equipment, along with the complacency of Tattooers world wide. Has made it possible for people to DIY tattoos. I made this reference to the video because any self respecting tattooer would do what is necessary (ie. Instill fear by showing said party photographs of diy tattoos that went horribly wrong) in order to preserve the tattoo industry(what's left of it). Hopefully I cleared that up for you. I apologize for being condescending if you are not a troll.
@Todd66
@Todd66 3 года назад
@@tattoojosh1 I respectfully disagree with your overall statement. Instilling fear will work for a few, but the rest are going to find someone that just uses simple logic. A genuine Tattooer is a artist and can simply point out that being a artist is the real reason one should go to a professional. To apply more logic, one would remind the potential client of the health risks of getting a DIY tattoo compared to a professional in a professional setting. Fear works for masses, but the individual is intelligent enough to be influenced by facts and character. The fact that you believe that you have to lie to people to “preserve” the business would be a identifier of the real problem...your perspective or attitude. Not only do I have tattoos, but I also have friends who are professional tattoo artists. Just to put my opinion into perspective. Always remember that when company’s compete, the customer wins. But if you want Chinese products to stop their domination of the American market, vote people in who have a strong stance against China.

So when doing patterns using stencils are you going for almost a dry spray thickness after your base coat is laid on? Generally how wet should the stenciled coats be applied?
@BransonCerakote

Still a wet coat, just much faster. You spray just heavy enough to cover the color underneath.

I had all my cerakote done professionally, 2 of them came that way.. had maybe 4 sent off.. and every single one of them chips super easy and gets scuffed with even just the tiniest bit of pressure cleaning it. I recently bought a glock that came cerakoted and within 2 weeks all of the edges (glock) have chips and every single corner has chipped off...and thats before I even shot it. With the Rifle I got, I took it to shoot and shot literally one mag. The upper has a huge chip in it, and my rail has 2 massive long chips on it from, ...well idk what from honestly.. all I did was hold it, shoot it , and sat it down on a mat. I think the issue is that claims cerakote makes are total bs. I feel like my factory stock annodize holds up way better., as anything I've ever had after market annodized as well just comes off with even the lightest use. and if you scuff or chip factory black anno you can at least buff' or polish it out, or even just fix it w perma/super blue.. but u cant fix cerakote without redoing the entire piece. If they could find a way to fix chips it would probably be worth it but I am curious ... has anyone ever had or done themselves a cerakote job where it actually lasted "a few years" like they claim? Where it didn't chip really easy and actually held up? Like on black anno trijicon u can throw those across rocks and theey dont chip... I touch my cerakote stuff and it chips off. I feel like they claim its the strongest most durable and resistant thing in the world and ya like I said my glock slide had about 15 chips on it before I even shot it, just from handling it and racking the gun and basic dry fire stuff.. Even all the cerakote jobs I've seen have nicks and scratches and it ends up looking like crap within a month. It's a amazing we can fly and walk on the moon.. we can shoot missles across the world and hit a exact target 10x10 feet. We can do so many amazing things but when it comes to paint we cant even get the color to match exactly or make it scratch proof... seems like that shouldn't be hard to do... Even my DLC or ion bonded stuff is toast after like a few mags.... its honestly all worthless. I think u just have to accept if you use a gun its going to look like shit.. It sucks because it kinda defeats the whole purpose of making guns look cool/sexy... They only stay that way til you use them . I am curious if anyone has had cerakote actually hold up even half of what they claim?

I feel like the place I went to failed at every step. Chipping, feel ridges, failed at the desgin I wanted and probably didnt even put my gun back together right. The trigger feels weird, the loaded chamber indicator flops up and down like a window opening and closing when it didnt do that before. I feel like I prayed this place to ruin my gun. This is suppose to be the best place in southern California too, makes me wonder about the shit jobs all the other places do.

Send it to a professional? A professional is just someone who gets paid to do something, doesn't mean they know what the hell they are doing either. If someone is willing to obtain all of the "required" equipment to apply Cerakote in the first place, they definitely should not be afraid to try it, its not magic, its just a coating.

I used to buy 50-60lk cars, and I use to buy 500-600 jordans... cause they looked so sexy -- like these cerakote guns...They were great for a bit but they end up getting so beat up its like whats the point? I spent a whole bunch on this thing to look good for a week or two? Now I drive a 15k car and $ 60 sneakers and let them get beat them get treated like hell and I dont care about fucking them up and honestly its way less stressful and I dont have to feel shitty about wasting all that money .as It sucks to spend 50k on a car and then within a matter of time someone is going to open their door into yours, or youll go too far and scrape your bumper on a parking spot, or rock chips... and same w shoes they are going to get scuffed and stepped on and its a shit feeling spending so much money on something that looks good to just have it thrashed in a few weeks. I made the decision to not buy anything for looks and been much happier since then. Whereas I used to feel great putting on a new pair of shoes, or driving my new coupe... I would get depressed when they would get marked up,.. spend forever trying to clean it and its pointless it just happens again.... Now when it comes to stuff like that and guns that are going to take a beating and look like shit anyway eventually I don't spend the money for looks and I am much happier cause I dont have to deal with ... well there goes $$$$$ down the drain after 2 weeks... After my experience with cerakote, and knowing their claims... its laughable. they just claim oh you didnt do it right... I guess no one can cause I've never seen a cerakote job actually hold up, have you?

Why would cerakote bubble in the oven ?
@user-me8hc3bs7i

Didn’t prebake so oils are trying to out gas from the metal pores and getting trapped in the coating. This leads to the small bubbles.

That guy nailed it gun settings. Also a good hvlp mini will make a hell of a difference. I use all CA technology and WTP guns for everything from automotive painting and clear coating fiberglass stocks, to duracoat, gunkote, and cerakote. Spend a little money and get a quality HVLP mini because it will atomize the material in your cup 10x better than a $40 harbor freight gun

@JoeWayne84 2 года назад
You use a test Object with you gun setup and your distance and overlap in mind and use a wet mil gauge . Coatings or 50%science 50% art\experience. Some people just can’t paint some people you can explain to them one time what you want and they’ll paint 50,000 sqft a day at 10-12 mils of epoxy haha it’s just a feeling thing I have a industrial coatings company and have painted custom cars since I was 14 for fun I’ve pretty much tried or done every type of coating known to man from zincing navy ships to epoxying the inside of water softeners you could put a house in haha. With coatings you need to read up on your coating your using understand the makeup of it the amount of solids and what reducers it’s using and then go from there and develop a plan of attack for the job you want to be a robot when applying the coating and focus on consistency of your movements more so than your eyes . Cerakoting a firearm is a very simple process and having high mils would be a negative you want good wet coverage with proper tooth in your prep I’m pretty sure I could show anyone in a few minutes how to spray cerakote on a firearm it’s definitely not to hard to do and if you didn’t like it you could always wash it before it dries with brake cleaner and then lightly blast it again there’s no way to mess up so bad that it should be a worry for a diy project.
