Today I’m back, and I’m back with a slightly controversial video! Today I will be discussing some animals that I DON’T particularly enjoy owning. There are plenty of reptiles out there that I love, but there are also a few out there that I’m not a big fan of. Let’s find out what they are!

I think this is a really cool type of video that I'd like to see more people doing, not only because I think it's very honest and it's a good thing for people to see possible downsides before running out and acquiring an animal but also because it's very interesting to compare. I actually have always been very into bugs but I started in the reptile hobby with a couple lizards as a kid because I was never allowed to have anything else. I only just recently started with invertebrates and I'm shocked at how much more I prefer it. I don't even know why I like it so much better but aside from maybe a handful of specific creatures I think I'll probably be out of the reptile hobby for good in favor of invertebrate keeping.

I actually agree with you in terms of gargoyle geckos-I love mine, she’s very pretty and nice, but she’s much more reclusive than my crested geckos, a lot jumpier, and just overall a pet who would be a fantastic display pet except for the fact that she hides a lot. I tend to forget she’s there outside of taking care of her. I’ll keep her for the remainder of her life, and I don’t regret getting her, but I won’t own another.

thank u for putting your feelings and thoughts into words! I was a little bit between gargoyle and crested geckos for my first, but I held a crested gecko for the first time this past weekend at a reptile expo and absolutely fell in LOVE with cresties!! Learning more about gargs makes me feel more confident in my choice :)

If you don't enjoy them, someone else would . Find passionate homes for them .

I don’t mind continuing to care for the animals that I already committed to owning. There’s already plenty of ball pythons/geckos/sand boas etc that are in need of new homes. I don’t need to contribute to that when I’m still able to care for them :)
@FS-qk5uq

@@EmmaLynneSampson NO. Rehome them. Just because you don't "mind" taking care of them doesn't mean you're giving them a good home, and that fact was extremely evident when you were talking about ball pythons. Ball pythons are are extremely curious semi-aboreal snakes. You finding them "boring" because they're always hiding and not doing much shows YOU have FAILED as a ball python owner. As you said, you have a lot of pets and have apparently spread yourself too thin to give them an appropriate and engaging environment. Being capable of keeping them clean and fed is the bare minimum, it does NOT make you a good owner. Rehome the pets you don't enjoy owning and focus on actually spending quality time with those that you do; not just having a large collection and collecting more like they're Pokémon cards.

I love Kenyan sand boas I am actually getting one really soon I probably wanted another snake but my parents wanted a small snake and my aunts friend is giving me and my aunt two for free one for her one for me so that’s really the only option I have because before in my life I have always been told no even though snakes bring me so much joy but the more I look into sand boas the more I realize how much I love them and can’t wait to own one but I respect your opinion ^^

Sand boas for me too. I had two and ended up giving the female to my mother who adores sand boas. So I know she is well cared for. I kept the male because he's small and all my other snakes are larger species so it's nice to have a little dude around but I wouldn't own another.

My Hermann’s tortoise. Not personable as was told he probably would be. I’m feeding, regulating temps for, bathing daily an animal who runs to his hide whenever he sees me. Much preferred my friendly bettas. And the torts live from 50-80 years.

"Boring" reptiles and inverts are useful as first-time or younger keeper pets. But, unless that person just decides those things aren't for him/her at all, at some point they are going to desire a little more challenge and interaction. I'm at that point right now with my Leopard gecko (1st, and only reptile). I think I want to branch out to either an Emerald or Black tree skink. I want some challenge from both the animal and the environment. My Leo is fine, but it seems that from Nov-Feb, he just drops to about 1/2 speed. I don't see him much, he drops to about 1 feeding a week and really has little curiosity to roam the tank or climb up my arm. Just hangs out in the warm/humid hide most of the time. Gets better once we get into spring, summer and early fall.

Mine is pac man frogs! I love interacting with my animals and watching them but my Pac-Man just… does nothing. Like at all. Nothing wrong with having a preference on animals you like to keep and look after!

After keeping different types of reptiles, amphibians, and inverts, I’ve realized that amphibians are my favorite! I love my Pac-Man, I would have so many more if I had the space. It’s funny how different people in the same hobby can be haha. For me it’s my bearded dragon and gargoyle gecko. I don’t enjoy caring for them very much but I do love them very much

To be fair to these animals..reptiles are not something you should own if you want something super interactive. Almost all of them want to be left alone. It makes me worry that you might be over handling your other animals.
@EmmaLynneSampson

I never mentioned anything about handling in this video. I honestly rarely handle any of my reptiles. I prefer animals that are active in their enclosure that I can watch and observe. None of this has anything to do with handling. Some of my favourite animals are my poison dart frogs and my chameleons which are pretty much unhandleable

This is an honest video, and I appreciate it! I definitely have some guilt for loving some of my pets more than others. You don't have to answer, but I was wondering if you've ever seriously considered rehoming the pets that don't bring you joy? There is a lot out there that can guide you to helping your snake's welfare that helps them to fulfil their potential and move away from being 'pet rocks'. I really encourage you to take a look and take in this informational decide how you will allow the science to guide your husbandry practices going forward with your snake. Here is some resources based on scientific evidence and research. Going back to the science tells us so much about snake behaviour, and really speaks for itself. Ball Python behaviour can be greatly affected by factors that are explored in these videos and a scientific approach to husbandry can provide answers about your experience with a 'pet rock', and how you can change that for the better. These videos are all science based, and often include keeper experiences as supplementary, but all the evidence *is* based purely on the science, keeper stories are just additional. Ball Pythons really are semi-arboreal: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fYpIk2pKOxE.html Why UVB is essential for health, behaviour, feeding and much more: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fa6YSREtV-Y.html Why you can see your snake more, when they live in a more complex environment with more places to hide: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3xPrMqYXSnM.html

So I feel the same way about gargoyles! Don't get me wrong, I love my girl and I'll have her forever, but I don't find them as personable as cresties. Obviously, as you know, my garg is very skittish and doesn't appreciate handling at all; she hides 99% of the time & often I only know she's alive cuz her food is eaten 😂 I know that not all gargs are like this, BUT it seems to be more common for them to be reclusive than with cresties and some other newcals. I also have zero interest in keeping a leachie 🙈 For ball pythons, I have a theory that they're more boring when you have multiples. I only have my 1, and I can focus a lot of attention on him and take him out and cuddle with him. But I've found myself thinking that if I had any more ball pythons, I might find them more boring because my time would be split up between them and honestly I might even end up not spending a lot of personal time with them. Idk if that makes any sense whatsoever 😂

If you don’t enjoy owning these animals why do you still keep them? Surely it’s better to keep animals that you love and enjoy owning so that it’s better for you and your animal? I think the video is good. Please just stress if an animal is bitty/nippy, it is because it is I instinctual. Same boas very similar to tree snakes are that way because of the pray they hunt or they have to be due to pray may be scarce when it does finally come along. Its a part of that breed of animal and has to be taken I to to consideration when owning that type of animal. Thanks for all you do.

@Creatureexotics
@Creatureexotics 2 года назад
@@anne-lenebakken5827 huh? Because you never 100% know how it will be keeping a pet until you have it for a few months at least. You can have certain expectations for sure but sometimes you just realise maybe it’s not for you. That doesn’t mean giving up on them or not caring for them, it just means that you maybe wouldn’t get another of that animal in the future. Some people for example get rats, but the loss of them so young puts them off continuing to keep new rats - nothing wrong with that! :)

I feel like you making a video putting down animals and discouraging hobbyists from getting something that they might really enjoy because you don’t. I think the title should be “Animals I should have researched more before purchasing”. I think the issues are in you not the animals. So sad to see influencers trying to manipulate the hobby. I hope some of your sponsors see this and shake their heads in your direction.
@EmmaLynneSampson
@EmmaLynneSampson 2 года назад
Saying an animal is just not for me is not discouraging people from getting an animal they want? I specifically said at the start at the video that this is not me saying these animals are bad pets at all, just that they’re not my favourite animals to keep. I got a Kenyan sand boa 5 years ago, did plenty of research and decided it was what I wanted. Now, 5 years later after I’ve kept and worked with dozens of other snakes, I’ve realized that Kenyan sand boas just aren’t my favourite anymore. lack of research is not the issue, sometimes people just learn and grow from the time they’re 17. All of these animals are still taken proper care of, and live good quality lives, I literally just prefer other species more and won’t get these ones again.

I think the factor you are forgetting is the influence you have on people in the hobby. I have spoken with others that agree with me but do not want to start a discussion with you about it. I do not think you intended for it to come across this way but it is how some people are seeing it. I guess it’s the price of fame. 😀 I wonder how many breeders with be effected by your video? I think it’s more the need to put a list of bad animals video up in the first place that startles me, I know these videos get RU-vid hits and that’s important to someone trying to see if you can make a living from this.
@Hope-Dasher
@Hope-Dasher Год назад
@@gregnikitin8954 you made your on point it’s better for people to hear and view honest criticism to often newcomers have a unrealistic expectations and only listen to things that agree with their line of thought, true unbiased research is a plus in any endeavor, videos like this will and should make a potential owner of these animals look harder at the care requirements and personality issues that can arise after the honeymoon phase wears off, it was actually this video that made me subscribe to her channel as I was doing research on getting a gargoyle gecko and realized it wasn’t for me and got another tokay gecko instead, not liking an animal doesn’t hurt breeders in as much as it protects these creatures from owners who if unhappy with their purchase may not be as scrupulous as you may want and disposal becomes a factor ☠️ and not everyone will seek out or has access to someone who will take these animals in,but I really think you already knew that, when you hop up on a soapbox you have more than one angle it’s ashamed that honest substantive opinion is now frowned on
