1. Increased sensitivity to salt 2. Chronic muscle stiffness 3. Numbness / tingling 4. Mental fatigue & mood swings 5. Insomnia If you are cramping or getting stiff during a workout it is most likely a potassium issue. If you are cramping or getting stiff a few hours after a workout it is most likely a magnesium issue. Tips: 1. Add sodium to your water in the morning and in the evening before going to bed. 2. @@lowelldagdag5504 You didn't ask me, but may I suggest that the best ways to get your sodium is wrapped up in minerals? The salts that provide that are available at health food stores and some whole food stores. Two examples are Celtic gray salt that have 84 minerals and Himalayan pink salt that has 74 minerals. Sea salt is pretty decent too. No refined salt with only sodium and chloride plus iodide is good for you. These contain anticaking agents and have been bleached of their health promoting abilities. Worse of all the free use of it contributes to the epidemic of high blood pressure. Hope you find this helpful.
I’ve been having palpitation, insomnia, fatigue, and the leg stiffness when I work out. Went to the doc, I’m low in potassium. This was great and very helpful!!!!
My son had a seizure a few years ago he was 15 we don’t know why, thought it was anxiety. Took him to get a brain scan and testing and they said they believed his potassium was low. They told me potassium is a very important thing and very small room for numbers to go up or down. Crazy that potassium is that important
I am sodium and potassium deficient, and Thomas is right, when you replenish those and other electrolytes, the symptoms of the deficiency lift quickly. It is quite marvelous. Great video.
@@mackosajt86 I struggled to get just 2000 - 3000 mg when I first tried to build up my potassium levels. I spent hours every week going to the store and trying and preparing many different foods - and like so many other people, I was just about ready to give up trying to reach that goal of 4700 mg .... when I accidently found that there were High Levels of Potassium in salt substitutes. I then looked up where to find salt substitutes aka Potassium - and found most grocery stores carry several varieties next to regular salt. I use 'No Salt' in a granular form to mimic the usability of real Salt. I often blend it into V8 ... or other foods. I even blend it into warm Water during the day to avoid breaking my no food "Intermittent Fasting" period. Just don't use too much on an empty stomach as it might cause irritation.
This is such important information. I was hospitalized last fall with critically low potassium levels / Hypokalemia. My situation was unique as it was as strange chain events that led up to this medical emergency-being on a non potassium-sparing diuretic, having surgery (IV fluids deplete your K+ stores) and then having a mild heat stroke days later-leading me to overhydrate, further depleting my potassium stores. I was mildly symptomatic in the months that preceded this and therefore was diligent in supplementing with electrolyte powder but it just wasn’t enough and the events that followed nearly caused me to lose my life. Electrolyte imbalance is no joke.
I was hospitalized for 5 days because of extremely low potassium and sodium levels. From the hospital they sent me to a rehab facility in a nursing home for 18 days. The doctor said I came really close to death.
Be careful Jeff, don't self medicate, or try to fix the problem yourself, unless you know exactly what you're doing. The same thing happened to me as well.
My dr didn't do anything just sent me home. Went to er 3 xs nothing. Changed dr and I got an copy of my blood test saw the low potassium. I asked about it , the new dr said yes low potassium. Why didn't they tell me?. She helped me. So now I use potassium citrate 3 to 4 times an day if working hard up to 6 gm an day. I also added B1.
@@silverfullbuster9177 I dint cook with it I use an but of water mix 1/2 teaspoon and down it. Now I take with foods, potassium can be hard on the gut. I also ordered in bulk and keep nosalt in car . But take it with water
He literally messed up the entire action potential explanation. He started off crappy and then started putting his pea-brain spin on it. Kudos to him for being successful tho.
I've been dealing with an electrolyte imbalance for years. The only symptoms I ever have are insomnia, and headaches. It recently got worse, last night I laid in bed from midnight, until 6am without so much as a single yawn. Wide awake, as if it was daytime. About 10 days ago I stopped eating any snacks with sugar in them, and for some reason it has made my electrolyte imbalance much worse. So I got out of bed and started researching what electrolytes were in the snacks I was eating, and discovered that magnesium is in chocolate. So, I went downstairs and ate a handful of dark chocolate chips, a glass of milk, half a banana, and a teaspoon of liposomal magnesium, and within 10 minutes my headache was subsiding enough to try sleeping again, and managed to go to sleep within 30 mins, and slept for 3 hours. I have noticed that salty meals have been increasing my heart rate more than they should. I fast a lot, and I only drink coffee in the morning, and it often makes me urinate way more than it should. Some days, I'll urinate 7 to 10 times within the course of just 3 hours after drinking coffee, those are the worst days for me, and they seem to follow nights where I drank way too much water, which I've been learning to regulate my intake. It's almost like my kidneys are overactive. My urine is almost always foamy, which I've learned is protein that isn't being properly absorbed.
I had dangerously low potassium from a diet I was following years ago. It was the scariest experience of my life. I got rushed to the hospital with two IVs in my arm. I take potassium everyday. I can’t stress how important it is to listen to your body and look for the signs!
@@Lucky-xs1nk Different sides of the body for muscle cramps. Think interconnection and interdependence for these minerals and possible symptoms. For example, Sodium-Potassium are like Yin-Yang, also Zinc-Magnesium, Chaga-Reishi, etc.
Not sure why anyone would give a thumbs down. Every bit of what you said is 💯 on the mark! I did keto first 2 years lost weight felt great I mean better than I ever had in my life. But between my mom in hospice and then Covid. N95s and not being able to drink water I got really dehydrated and really felt like I was one ball of cramp. Even dealing with inflammation or gouty arthritis. ISO gowns. I just couldn’t restart. I’m hoping that this little pack will get my electrolytes back and I can dump some swelling. And start back two weeks after just balance eating. I ordered the sampler hope it helps
Cream of tartar, a byproduct of wine making, is high in potassium. I just add it to my morning smoothie, and also supplement with magnesium for balance. No muscle cramps ☺
Hi, Sheri... Can we just mix 3-4 grams of COT with 2 litre of water and sip through that throughout the entire day? I was actually wondering whether can my body absorb potassium in this form especially if we add it with water.
@@rajdeepmahajan8943 I take my smoothie with other supplements, one of which is magnesium for balance with the potassium in cot. I'm not sure how well it would dissolve in water or if the flavor would be tolerable in plain water.
After several months of carnivore I found that I was Potassium and Magnesium deficient. I was taking in plenty of salt but still didn't feel right. These do come in meats but nowhere near the amounts needed on a daily basis. So I had to incorporate avocados, lettuce, and an occasional fruit. On certain days I also needed to supplement these. I felt a huge difference after doing this. Blood pressure stabilized and energy levels increased. Glucose control also improved
Not to mention a carnivore diet isnt sustainable long term. Any diet that's unbalanced isnt gonna be sustainable long term. Keto, carnivorous, paleo, OMAD ect ect are all diets that target specific things, they don't ring all the bells. You'll be efficient in one area but deficient in like 3 other areas lol
@@johnsterling5533 I have tried multiple diets over the years. Like you said each one has its own benefits but also many disadvantages. Humans are monogastric omnivores, meaning that we ate pretty much anything and everything over the course of human evolution. In my journey I've come to the conclusion that I was focusing too much on the macronutrients when really I should have been focusing more on the micronutrients instead. The biochemistry processes and pathways all require essential and semi-essential micros in certain amounts. Most chronic diseases are a result of deficiencies that go unrecognized. These diets supplements are "tools" that we all can use to reverse diseases and optimize health to what our goals are. There are too much dogma and myopathy in each camp. Some diets are better than others, but each one has its downfalls. Are they sustainable? They can be if done right and micros are taken into account. Most people do not address the micros requirements unfortunately. I found that out with my insufficient daily intake of K and Mg being on carnivore. Keto is a more balanced way of eating in my opinion, but even that has its drawbacks if micros are not taken into account.
@@JYAN2852 yea i know, ive done keto twice now and lost over 100 lbs the first time and around 80 the second time. But i always end up stopping cause i start feeling with crap after a while and i dont sleep much when im doing keto for some reason even with melatonin. It's great for weight loss i cant deny that, but i get kinda screwed over on a lot of other things. Being vegan is another diet you cant really do long term. It depletes you way too much.
@@johnsterling5533 That's awesome on the weightloss! My goal was mainly to reverse health conditions that my doctors were not able to do with their pills. The weightloss was a bonus of course for me. I could not agree more on the vegan diets. Humans have an acid base digestive system and a short colon to ferment soluble fiber. I don't understand why anyone would deny ourselves of nutrient dense foods and essential amino acids that our stomach had evolved to break down and absorb. Sure they will argue that they can get all the amino acids they need with plants, but this goes back to the need to supplement. I think fasting is wonderful and necessary to heal and detoxify. But doing so also depletes us of essential micros, especially electrolytes. Most people doing keto/carn/paleo have incorporated IF into their routine without taking minerals into account. Me personally I switch diets around according mostly based on the season. I find that doing so works best for me personally to maintain proper balance. I do supplement when I feel I need to when I know that certain foods are lacking. This method has worked wonders for me. I get a lot of criticism by both carnivore and keto community members that their diets are perfect and should not have to supplement. To each their own of course. What works for me may not work for others and vice versa. Supplements are another "tool" that we can use if available. Just as how driving a car is not required but everyone drives.
@@JYAN2852 Hey buddy. Thanks for the detailed comment. Would you like to share what types of supplements you take on daily, weekly and monthly basis? And in which form?
Yes me too as my legs and ankles completely stopped cramping in bed and I didn't get so much as a twinge, like a warning of cramp coming with certain ankle movements like before I started taking Apple Cider Vinegar.
I agree as one who practices OMAD that it’s difficult to keep potassium optimum daily especially when supplements only have 99mg per pill. Thank you Mr DeLauer!
A very simple way to get enough potassium in your diet is to use a potassium chloride salt substitute such as Nu-Salt. I add a quarter teaspoon of Nu-Salt to my drinks and smoothies throughout the day to space out my daily consumption of potassium. A quarter teaspoon of Nu-Salt contains about 800 mg of potassium which is the most you want to consume per serving while trying to achieve a daily intake of 4700 mg of potassium per day (minimum daily recommended dosage). I also sprinkle it on food in addition to regular salt with Iodine. Your body also needs Iodine which is not in many sea salts and regular table salts, so I buy Morton’s special salt that contains Iodine.
@contrarian717 our grandparents didn't eat the way we do. They ate natural foods, the way we're supposed to. When you eat real foods, you naturally get the nutrients you need, in the correct ratios you need as well.
I had symptoms 1-4 for 20 years before I went LC which coincided with also focusing on nutrition. I eat much more salt now and I mix my salt about 2:1 with No Salt which contains a lot of potassium. No more cramps, no fatigue etc. Sleep has never been much of a problem for me.
another sign of potassium deficiency is high blood pressure, when you can feel your heart, very unpleasant feeling, few seconds after eating avocado that feeling was gone...
I’ve always had very high b.p. But drugs have not helped at all, only made me I’ll. the worst given by a specialist was a beta-blocker, and after a few years on it, just collapsed in the drs surgery. Then wheelchair ever since - about 34 yrs.
I used to have really bad fluid retention and taking sufficient potassium didn't help. As well, I used to wake up at the crack of dawn feeling 'starved.' The paradoxical thing is that I was too low on sodium which was the reason for both these phenomena. Now I'm doing keto and taking in more sodium and the swelling, joint ache and early morning 'starvation' has stopped completely. I sleep so much better now that I have enough sodium in my system.
@@logical_lb3059 My body went into "starvation mode" and that leads to fluid retention which is what happened to the prisoners in the concentration camps; they had ridiculous amounts of fluid retention despite their sodium deficient diet which was too low in all nutrients.
@@josephin521 thanks, how are you taking in more sodium and how do you know how much is enough to consume daily? I don’t know if I have fluid retention but my eyes are always puffy (in the mornings esp) along with some dark circles. Could it be low potassium? Also my eyebrow hairs fall out all over and are thinning out, they seem to be weak. Don’t know the reason.
I just started on a blood pressure medicine yesterday “ Lasartan Potassium”. Over the past 3 years I have been to urgent care with muscle spasms and labs came back that I was extremely low potassium. I asked the ER doctor. What do I do about it and they just said I guess you take some potassium. No suggestions about dose for why I was deficient. The last year I’ve had high blood pressure. And then I see the medicine that I started yesterday has the word potassium in it. I am not a person that has ever added salt to my food so I’m very weirded out about the high blood pressure. Anyway, I realize that my primary care doctor knows nothing about vitamins and minerals. I’m sitting here, not knowing whether I need more salt or less salt. I’ve never been one to want to take medicine. I wish the medical establishment knew more about nutrition as you. Sigh….
I knew it !!! I just said to my son the other day, after reading up on Potassium, I said, " I bet that the pharmaceutical world are putting potassium in a tablet, to make money out of it. Ever since the disgusting covid jabs, I've lost all trust in the medical profession. Which is why I'm searching for help to get off a couple of meds. I bet we've been getting ripped off by them for years.
Have you ever heard of salt sensitivity hypertention. My husband has been dealing with the same thing. It's not that you have to much sodium but the imbalance of sodium to potassium levels. We need 4700. mg. Of potassium. It's best to get it from foods. There are some video's that explain this well. Dr. Berg does a good job of explaining also.
FDA put a 99mg on Potass supp for this reason. But if buying powder it can easily be overdone if not careful. But that would require consuming the entire cannister or bag in 1 day. Potass is rich in leafy greens. Vegans I imagine are taking in way more than the RDA of 4700mg and they are fine. But yes anything in excess can be harmful. Even too much water, fat, protein, can have bad outcomes
the relief of anxiety from consuming coconut water is significant not to mention my breathing seems to have improved on the treadmill i noticed my heart rate is lower whilst doing the same work out as if my heart has become more effcient
5:46 damn, just saw this after having numbness in my hands when waking up for about a week or two now. Last night I had a headache and drank an electrolyte drink before bed and noticed that I didn't have numbness in my hands after waking up this morning. Now I think I know why. Going to see if keeping my potassium intake up will keep that from happening again. Great video!
I had potasssium deficiency arm/legs cramps during sleep was my symptoms. It only occurs at night when I sleep. I thought it was magnesium for a long time so took magnesium supplements. It worked for a while but then it stopped working, until I found out it was actually postassium. My doctors are useless because they couldn't figure it out. It didn't show up in my blood works
And yet it's dr's who give the RDA, recommend a LOT of potassium (4,700 mg/day!!!). You'd think they'd be on the lookout for deficiencies. They're taught that Americans have fabulously healthy diets and don't likely lack anything lol.
Thank you for explaining this so well. My cramps were so painful, I could barely walk. I went for Physio before I thought of nutritional deficiency. Once I started putting electrolytes in my water, everything disappeared and a felt so much better. I also drink S Pellegrino water which helps.
Something he didn’t mention is temperature regulation. If you have problems with being to hot with covers at night, and hard to get that just right temp to sleep, probably not enough potassium. Also I have slept for a couple of hours and cannot get back to sleep with some potatoes or something with potassium.
Yes! I get hot flahes during the day and especially at night in bed when I'm low in potassium. I have to bring the temp down in the house otherwise I can't sleep at all :(
best electrolyte source: coconut water! Go natural :). Here are the facts: low in sugar and contains a variety of electrolytes , including sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. At 46 calories per cup (237 ml), it's also a healthier alternative to sodas, juices, and traditional sports drinks
@@ropeyarn Really carrot juice is the best and that's why carrots never quit at the grocery store. Coconut I have to water down, it's not got enough of something in it that makes it like too much sugar. The island and tropical people just want to sell it. Root juices can't be beat.
@@ouivalerie I agree with you on carrot juice. And it even has a little extra sweetness so you can add something slightly bitter to your juice. "Root juices can't be beet." , missed a good pun there.
If the recommended daily value of potassium is our guide, even the foods "rich in potassium" would require unrealistic consumption amounts to reach this. Even the mentioned electrolyte LMNT contains just 6% of the recommended daily value per serving. So, how much potassium really needs to be consumed daily?
This continues to puzzle me as well. If I do plenty potassium foods I still don't come close to the RDA, and then my protein intake goes too low as well.
I would like to see an examination of B Vitamins deficiency since these vitamins are essentials because they escape your body every day through the urine.
For a long time, I endured muscle spasms, and even cramps, mostly in my legs while in bed. People used to tell me I shake a lot. At one point, a heart arrhythmia landed me in the hospital. Needless to to say, the allopathic practitioners at the VA have virtually no veritable nutrition training. After I started sprinkling a little Nu-Salt in my drinking water, it started doing wonders. I rarely have these problems anymore, all Glory to the Lord, for educating us via great teachers like Thomas DeLauer.
You can bet that our Healthcare $ystem$ would prefer people spend a fortune on doctor's office visits, prescriptions, hospital stays and tests - rather than educating people as to the symptoms of low levels of basic inexpensive nutrients like Potassium, Magnesium ... and even vit D, and Omega 3 ...etc
Symptoms of low potassium: • Muscle weakness • Difficulty breathing • Constipation • Cramps and twitching • Arrhythmias • Hypertension • Fatigue • Alkalosis • Insomnia • High pulse rate • Pulsatile tinnitus Top potassium deficiency causes: • A lack of potassium in the diet • Junk food • Vomiting • Diarrhea • Diuretics • Stress or Cushing’s syndrome • Sugar and refined carbs • The keto diet (initially) • Drinking too much water • Fasting • Low magnesium • Laxatives • Injuries or surgery The best sources of potassium: 1. Beet leaves 2. Leafy greens 3. Avocados 4. Squash 5. Lima beans 6. Salmon Bananas, oranges, cantaloupes, honeydew, apricots, grapefruit (some dried fruits, such as prunes, raisins, and dates, are also high in potassium) Cooked spinach. Cooked broccoli. ---- Raw Potatoes. In fact, potatoes rank highest for potassium content among the top 20 most frequently consumed raw vegetables and the top 20 most frequently consumed raw fruits. One medium potato (5.3 ounces) with the skin contains 620 mg of potassium. One medium potato delivers roughly 17% of the daily value (DV). That's about 40% more potassium than you'll find in a banana, which only contains 422 mg, or 9% DV. In addition to potassium, 1 medium potato provides 5 grams of fiber, 4 grams of protein, vitamin C and magnesium.
I checked LMNT has wrong sodium - potassium ratio: sodium 1000mg, potassium 200mg. From what I know we need a few times more potassium comparing to sodium. So the ratio is totally wrong. Also: sodium you can get very cheaply by adding Himalayan salt to water. So effectively you pay a lot of money just for sodium - being the main ingredient, effectively wasting your money. This is a common problem in various electrolyte products. Be aware of it and look carefully for good electrolite. Good electrolite should have 3 times more potassium than sodium. Thomas - I am very disappointed you are promoting a bad product ..
OMG! This video has helped me sooo much! I honestly thought that it was all in my head because I swear to god sometimes I took a tablet and BEFORE THE DAMN TABLET HAS EVEN REACHED MY STOMACH my brain fog almost disappeared. I told this to my doctor and they said I was just imagining it! ?!?……. I feel so validated right now listening to you I could cry. 😆 What started to happen to me was I was drinking loads of water and I was still dehydrated. I had no saliva coming into my mouth. I have gastroparesis and I constantly, constantly battle with deficiencies (and my useless doctors) Actually it’s the opposite for people with gastroparesis in that, when you eat CARBS your electrolytes deplete so I have to remember to eat mostly proteins.
I have experienced calf cramps for 4 years after 5-10 minutes of excersise. Now I can excersise for hours without getting cramps. Taking Electrolytes really changed everything

Ok, that drink seems good, but What is the kind of magnesium and potasium in it? Like - is it magnesium carbonate? glycinate? What s the the potasium source? Is it 200 mg elemental potasium or is it 200 mg of potasium citrate?
I’ve been suffering from low potassium while pregnant and it’s horrible fatigue plus feeling more tired and being tachycardic is horrible hopefully consuming more potassium will help
I've been to the ER for Hypokalemia, very low potassium levels. They said I had acidic blood. They told me that my levels were at 2.7 and they said you run a serious risk of heart failure at 2.5. it's scary because you almost feel like you're going to have a seizure because your whole body is starting to contract on itself and starting to seize up. And that brain fog.... boy oh boy... 😂 Regardless it was because of my own stupidity (alcohol). I drink basically nothing but Powerade, Gatorade and Body Armour for electrolytes. And water, even got an app for tracking my water intake and make sure I'm drinking enough by reminding me. Lol but still battling the yeast beast. Nowhere near how I was. But I have had some symptoms that lead me to believe, I might be on the verge of Kidney failure. Had acute pancreatitis twice and almost had my liver start bleeding. But I'm striving to stop and get my life back. 29 years old and I can tell I took years off my life already. I want to cherish these years I do have left and I need to be sober to do it.
At a young age you have some resilience. If you stop messing around and take good care of yourself, you might just bounce back to where you should be. Good luck!
Good to hear your taking your soberness seriously this might help you maintain the course remember your drinking does not effect only you. My daughter drank herself to death as well as my brother. I miss those people but I could not get them to stop. If you've got a grip on it please please don't let go.
I was also in the ER for hypokalemia my level was 2.9. I was constantly nauceous, hard time breathing, felt like I was gona pass out. I still have iusses now on and off. I eat healthy over all and work out, but started taking pottasium supplements, and try and eat foods high in potassium . I also think I have an issue with my adrenal glands, still don't know exactly what Is happening and it's frustrating .
I am glad I found your channel. You explain in great terms, unlike most M.D.'s. WHY DO M.D.s not have the same info that you do?!?!?! Long story short, I wanted P/K supplements from my doctor at 45% - 50%, and was granted after 2 years of debating. The prescription was only for 30 days. Inside of 2 weeks, MOST of my problems of old age disappeared! I slept better, no Restless Leg Syndrome, digestion was better, etc. This video enhances my disdain for the medical industry for the simple reason is that I am an avid Homeopathic researcher and client. Homeopathy is frowned upon by the allopathic industries. Thank you for this info! I hope you AWAKEN many more!
I have neuropathy and Havel been taking potassium daily one pill 500 for numbness was working great but now numbness back and you can take too much potassium same problem numbness so how do you know how much to take?
I found a solution. Giant's organic section has Bok Choy and Red Swiss Chard on the cheap. One cup of Swiss Chard has over 900mg potassium, Bok Choy has over 600mg potassium per cup. Just Wolf down about four to seven big leaves plus stems of either vegetable and you got your daily value. I personally eat avocados for the healthy fats, not the potassium. I can only stomach maybe one full avocado a day, to get your DV from avocado you'd need to bloat yourself to high heaven, but organic Swiss Chard and Bok Choy are delicious, fibrous, quick to eat, and enable you to focus on other things than belly aching about if you're getting enough potassium.
I usually have low blood pressure. So when I was supplementing potassium I was feeling faint & dizzy, so I stopped. Even though I'm positive I don't get 4,700 mg a day. I feel much better now. I do notice the dizzyness when I don't get enough salt too. If I don't take mag at night I often get leg cramps, esp. if I cheated that day with too many carbs. Or too much calcium eg: the amount of mozzarella in a couple slices really mess me up.
I watched back to back videos and two different electrolyte products were promoted on each video , he will literally promote anything that has a pay check attached to it !
i'm feeling very irritated after my workouts, i have eye twitching on my right eye all the time and mental fatigue and about a year ago i had VERYY painful calf cramps. potassium, magnesium, sodium is so underlooked within the fitness industry
If you read Nutrition Facts labels, you might realize most of us are K deficient because the electrolytes are almost NEVER balanced: we should have AT LEAST a 1:1 ratio of K and NA. The LMNT product that is adverted is the perfect example of why most of us are all K deficient: for every 1mg of sodium consumed, we should have 1mg of potassium... we actually evolved consuming K:Na ratios that were more like 1.5:1... another good indicator that you are K deficient is menstrual cramps: the uterus is another muscle and it gets cramped like any other. The more stress in your life, the more K you need.
Thomas - much thanks and deep appreciation for ur indepth explanation on the lack of Potassium in our body. It has helped me piece the jigsaw now, as to why I have been suffering from fogginess n heavy fatigue n pain in my legs - God Bless 🙏😊
You da man Thomas! Thanks to you and Dr Berg I’ve lost 3 waist sizes and in the best shape in a long time💪 Don’t care for any of the sports drinks on the market can you recommend a keto friendly one?
I make my LMNT in a shot glass and then chase it with water. I find it MUCH better than drinking a whole pint of diluted LMNT. We call it our salty shot and have one every day. It is actually decent this way.
I heard along time ago that bananas are good for pottasium and they are super convenient....But that might conflict with someone's keto regimen because of the carbs....But eating a banana before ,during or after a bike ride can replenish carbs......I think I was very low on pottasium so I just ate two bananas ....I feel better now ...a little less brain fog ,lethargy and fatigue...my heart feels better
My potassium tends to be on the low side with cramping in both calves. I take a tsp(5.69g) of NuSalt in 16 oz of water. It clears up the cramping in about 5 minutes. If the cramping still continue I take magnesium, which takes about 45 minutes to kick in. I do not know why the potassium chloride kicks in so fast. Maybe some is absorbed sublingually, but even so that seems to fast. I speculate that the body has a way of signaling that a new supply is on the way, so then let's reserves be used.
🌱🪴🌷my understanding of potassium in-balance; could occur drinking too much diuretics - coffee, tea, sodas (dehydration), diarrhea etc., overindulging processed foods, eating high Omega 6’s (on low fat high carb diet pretty much exclude whole plant foods like veggies, beans, healthy nuts, moderation of fruits); don’t be afraid of 🌊 🧂 (it’s your best friend).
I wake up with horrible charley horse cramps in my legs at least every other week. I'm not an athlete - far from it. My exercise "regime" is walking 1.1 to 2 miles, 2 or 3 times a week. I take a multivitamin, an extra D3, and a B multi every day. In a Dr. Berg video, he stated that if you can hear your heart thumping in your ears, it probably indicates low potassium, and I used to have that much worse, but now I drink electrolytes most days. I also try to take a magnesium pill every night before bed. Even then, I'll still get cramps sometimes. It's horrible waking out of a sound sleep with my calf muscle knotted in an apple-sized lump. So painful! I started tracking my macros on myfitnesspal on April 2nd, and I haven't reached the RDA of 3500 mg of potassium a single day (doesn't include counts from the vitamins, just from my foods). I'm usually only at about 2000, or 57%. Most days, I also exceed the recommended limit on sodium by a 1000 mg. Sure not doing myself any favors. I'll give the LMNT a try, it has higher potassium content than the electrolyte mix I bought recently at Whole Foods. Little concerned about the amount of sodium in LMNT, though. Thanks for making a sample pack available. When I just purchased it, it included 7 packs and 3-5 day shipping is $5 to the US.
I've had similar cramping issues, and also muscle twitching. (Do you get muscle twitching as well?) These improved very much when I increased potassium intake and decreased sodium intake.
I tend to be low in potassium. This manifests in cramps. When this happens I'll take potassium chloride in a glass of water and within 3 to 5 minutes the cramping stops. One time this didn't happen quickly. So I took a magnesium supplement. This took about 45 minutes to kick in.
During the last week I always woke at 3-4 am with palpitations, frequent urination and unable to fall asleep again. A real nightmare. At first I tought "stress!"... but then I noticed that even in a day when i was doing nothing but playing videogames it happened anyway. So I started sperimenting with supplements right after I woke up in the middle of the night, and I found out that potassium put me right back to sleep in like 20 minutes untill 8 am !!! 8 AM !!! I've always taken electrolites in the past, but apparenly in keto I need like DOUBLE the amouth of what I used to.
Regarding the electrolyte packet, you recommend LMNT. I noticed the sodium level is much higher than the potassium. It’s my understanding the body needs twice the amount of potassium as sodium. Is there a supplement you suggest that has a higher ratio of potassium?
just recently got these and I have to admit that I no longer experience wierd heart rythms in my chest or the feeling of exhaustion during long fasting periods
I had extreme Restless Leg syndrome, potassium and Magnesium fixed it within days. Was also causing extreme panic and anxiety like symptoms. Have a construction job in the so cal desert heat and it gets the worst in the summers from the sweating all day.
i'm potassium deficient and so i ordered some from amazon last night. i get night time calf cramps and foot cramps and i have like all the symptoms Thomas mentioned. Also, i've been on Blood Pressure meds for several years; really hoping to be taken off them one day.
@@becksbitofblue i've started taking potassium citrate - two 275mg capsules each night. My leg and foot cramps have disappeared! i also try to eat an entire avocado at least 3 times a week. And i LOVE Dr. Berg videos!! Also love Dr Ken Berry's vids! Peace!
The information here seems solid and helpful. There's something about all those _okays?_ (and _rights?),_ combined with your delivery speed, that makes me feel nervous, though.
I knew I was low on Potassium when my heartbeat thumbed in my ears at night to the point I couldn't sleep no matter the position I slept in. Thanks to a Dr. Berg video I started eating one banana a day problem solved.
Wow, did Dr. Berg recommend banana for low potassium? That surprises me. 🤷♀️ There are so much lower glycemic, with higher potassium content, options.
@@katk1958 no he did not recommend bananas that was my choice. I am not a fan of avocados and one banana worked for me. I do fast mostly every day. I am 5' 2" weigh 100 lbs so caloric or glycemic intake wasn't a concern and I like bananas. My preference not his recommendation and it works.
My father always carried a can of sardines in his pickup, as do I. I eat then after hunting or cutting firewood. But it wasn't until recently that I realized that if I ate them, I didn't get bad leg cramps later. I wasn't potassium deficient when I was young, so the sardines in olive oil were just a good source of protein to rebuild muscle & electrolytes. It appeared that as I got older that I was to be cursed with bad cramps after exertion and had assumed it was because I was not as active & out of shape. Nope. I started eating a banana, potatoes & eggs with an avocado for breakfast & sardines for lunch when cutting firewood in the fall, and magically, I stopped experiencing horrific leg & back cramps afterwards at night. Yahoo! I'm not just getting old! I bought some potassium & calcium supplements with Vitamin D, C, magnesium manganese, copper & zinc & keep them in my truck to take with the sardines as extra insurance. Another benefit to repleting my potassium deficiency is that when I wake up in the monning, I'm not groggy like I was for years. I'm wide awake when I get up. And I don't feel bloated when I eat (rarely) a meal at McDonald's. I assume that I was sensitive to the high sodium. Ive since told friends hiw to svoid leg cramps, snd they've thanked me. My generation were given salt pills in high school and we all assumed we still needed more water & salt. We were never taught about potassium. PS: A can of V8 juice os a great souce of electrolytes to slam in if need. Alcoholics often drink a Bloody Mary in the morning to recover, energize & start in on another day of drinking. I doubt they know or care why they feel better, just that it works.
The ideal ratio of sodium to potassium intake is roughly 1:3 - that is, potassium intake would ideally be around three times our sodium intake. So electrolytes with 1000 mg of sodium and 200 mg of potassium in the one you are recommending may not be a good thing!
I 2nd this. I always included more sodium then potassium in my ketorade, but always felled brainfogged and dehydrated. Now i switched to more pottasium and feel much better!
Beet greens only have 290 mg potassium per cup. One third of the RDA is about 1,566 mg. I believe it takes more than one serving of beet greens to get 1/3 of the RDA.
I was misdiagnosed for more than 15 months! Blood work for potassium has to be very low before its detected. Heart palps, weak muscles, neuropathy, high pulse rate, skin issues, Brain fog. It was hell. Luckily my heart didn't stop. So much for Doctors being helpful. I found my answers here on RU-vid.
1 thing that always troubles me with all the wonderful vitamins and minerals that we have access too is how we can get them to metabolize into our system without the risk of just passing through I know you mentioned dilution as do a few others that I have seen doing videos on this important issue. Worst thing is I can see all these symptoms in myself and can't seem to rectify the situation which is extremely frustrating. Thanks for the great video you're Awesome
I have heard that it is best to get your vitamins and minerals from natural foods, if possible. Rather than having it in a vitamin pill or capsules. Next best choice is using organic natural supplements like in powders, if you can afford them. That's what I heard.
