Today I want to cover some interesting and unexpected benefits of potassium.
Many people already know that potassium supports a healthy heart and healthy blood sugar levels and helps balance bodily fluids. But, there is so much more to potassium.
You need a lot of potassium. The body requires 4700 mg of potassium every day. You don’t require even a fraction of that for other nutrients.
Potassium supports two major areas: the muscles and the nerves-and it’s essential for energy production.
Many foods people say are high in potassium, like fruit, whole grains, beans, and potatoes, are not actually good sources of potassium. The phytic acid in whole grains can even block potassium.
The best sources of potassium are leafy greens-especially Swiss chard and beet tops. Avocados are also an excellent source of potassium. Adding fish and beef to your diet with vegetables is another great way to get the potassium you need.
Causes of a potassium deficiency:
• A lack of vegetables in the diet
• Experiencing stress
• Consuming too much sugar
• Consuming too much caffeine
• Consuming too much alcohol
• Taking diuretics
• Consuming too much salt
• Experiencing an injury
• Going through a surgery
Unexpected benefits of potassium:
1. Cognitive benefits
2. Cerebellum support
3. Mood support
4. Stronger muscles
5. Protection against leg cramps
6. Countering the effects of high sodium (salt)
7. Supporting regular bowel movements
You can also try my high-potassium Electrolyte Powder to help achieve your potassium requirements, improve your endurance, and support your health. Just remember to take more sea salt if you're exercising while taking a high-potassium electrolyte powder.

Interesting! In plants over 97% of the potassium is in the plant sap EXCEPT when the plant starts filling fruit with nutrients.. then the fruit (or grain or whatever) is acting like a 1 way gateway as potassium is carrying the sugars and nutrients to the fruit. I see a lot of correlations with plants and humans on a nutritional level. Thanks Dr Berg!

In sourdough, the lactic acid produced by the fermentation itself, produce an enzyme called phytase, which 'pre-digests' the phytic acid during fermentation. Do we know if that eliminates the possibility of phytic acid acting negatively towards our body after we digest sourdough bread? I consume homemade sourdough bread I make myself at 30%-40% wholegrain rye and the rest very strong white bread flour unfortified, and in a moderate to low overall consumption. I would appreciate any feedback from the Doc! Keep up the good work!

Something worth saying on minerals and especially Potassium; it is much active to consume Potassium in solidity than electrolyte drinks. So adding vegetables, cruciferous plants, meats - will allow the Potassium to absorb into the bloodstream much faster and remain within the body longer - especially while it sits in your gastrointestinal tract. Liquid forms of Potassium passes through the body within minutes and normally helps for a little while.

I'm SOOOOO glad I found this information as the salt water pool gave my husband and I terrible leg cramps while in the pool! Bummer huh? I didn't think to use potassium to counter it!! Boy I know what to do this year!! I'm going to take potassium citrate and put it mixed with water in a spray bottle with some magnesium and put that on after swimming. Chlorine also depletes vital minerals so it's a good idea with either type of pool. Oh and I can concur completely with this list of benefits! Totally experience all of these.

I am 100% getting your electrolyte support drink mix, I did the math on your 100 servings version and it is SO much cheaper than all of the many supplements I am taking! @macheadg5er
@macheadg5er 2 года назад
Darn near impossible to overdose unless you are trying to kill yourself. Ive been fighting low potassium my whole life ended up in the hospital twice because it was so low. I started taking potassium bulk powder haven't had any issues. I take 5000mg a day of potassium (via Potassium Gluconate) If you take too much your body will just urinate it out. So unless you take like a pound of it at once you are fine.

Yes. It's the ratio between sodium/potassium that's most important but its very possible to get too much of potassium or sodium in the blood from labs and symptoms I've seen.
@markdaisey4800
@markdaisey4800 2 года назад
If you take a large bolus of potassium - say a full teaspoon worth of KCl, that may be enough to push your blood K levels up to dangerous levels. The kidneys are really good at preemptively excreting potassium as you consume it to keep the blood levels within normal range. Small doses of potassium salt such as 1/4 tsp in 16 oz of water won't be any issue. Food sources are no problem either since they take longer to break down and hence the potassium is time-released. Kidney diseases impair excretion, causing accumulation. Some diuretics called "potassium-sparing diuretics" will contribute to high blood potassium. Overall, yes an OD is possible if you have kidney disease, take certain diuretics, or consume a large bolus (think of a teaspoon of potassium salt). Food sources are the best way.

I love listening to Dr Bergs. I haven't tried keto because l stopped eating meat 3 years ago, I wasnt sure how my body would cope without it but my body copes very well, l do know some people's bodies need meat. I have bloods taken on a regular basis and so far l'm showing no signs of any deficiencies but listening to this makes me think l am definitely deficient because l tick all the symptoms, brain fog, cramps, etc. I have suffered from extreme leg cramps four or more times a night due to a back operation on my L4 and L5 discs l had 15 years ago. No one really knows why l get them. Specialists say it might be scar tissue thats causing them, others say lack of magnesium but noone really knows, l have tried many different things l have even tried sleeping with a bar of soap at the foot of my bed, its amazing what you can find on google in the middle of the night.. l've taken good quality magnesium but it hasn't worked, nothing has worked to date. It was only recently when l heard Dr Berg mention potassium can help with cramps my ears pricked up, l needed to know more. With all the years of research this is the first time l have ever heard potassium can help so l became very intrigued to know more. l recently had an appointment with a dietitian at a hospital to discuss my cramps and I mentioned that l came across Dr Bergs videos and he mentions the importance of increasing potassium if you have cramps etc, as many people are deficient and dont even know it.. The first thing she said "too much potassium can be dangerous" and the second thing she said " be extremely cautious taking on any advice from a person putting up health advice on youtube"...To be honest l did walked away from my dietitians appointment feeling disillusioned. I used to believe dietitians were the answer but from my experience its as though everyone is under the same umbrella. We are individuals and our needs are different too everyone else. I'm very open to trying potassium but l also dont want to cause any more health issues than l already have. (I was diagnosed with blood cancer - Non Hodgkin's one year ago and l'm now in remission, so it's important l do the right thing. I refused to get the jab because l trusted my body needed to heal first , there were other reasons for not getting it but that was my main reason. I'm glad l refused because l have heard others that were in remission are no longer, coincidence , l guess we will never know 🤷‍♀️) l do have an appointment with a highly regarded naturopath, so l will be interested to see her take on taking extra potassium 🤞... lm willing to try anything as long as it has benefits for my health... On a different topic, I've seen many youtube videos of people recommending zinc to help boost the immune system. Yes, there are many benefits of taking zinc but noone has ever mentioned that taking zinc long term can cause health issues. You should always have a break when taking zinc! I highly recommend doing research and for anyone promoting the benefits of taking supplements or increasing certain vitamins or minerals, they should include the health risks of overdosing, it's called a duty of care.

I'm so sorry you have so many overwhelming issues. I think the best thing would be to build a foundation of eating nothing but healthy foods. I understand cost issue with foodstamps but if you can eat a huge salad (7-10 cups organic if possible) and lots of pastured eggs EVERY DAY it will do wonders for you. The key is to get as many nutrients from quality food as possible rather than expensive supplements which vary widely in quality. Having said that, you're smart to boost your health by taking B Complex vitamin supplements that include Biotin for skin, nails and hair. Also VERY important are vitamins D3 and K2 (see Dr. Bergs many videos on that subject) and trace minerals. I know it's tempting to buy cheap frozen dinners and processed foods but you just won't get good nutrition from them. Wishing you great success and health!
