In this video Greg shows you how to read a carfax or a vehicle history report and what to look out for.There are many hidden pieces of information the Carfax report can provide. A vehicle identification number, otherwise known as the VIN is important and can provide a great deal of information on the used car that you are interested in buying. Things like highway miles, in service date, warranty related information, dealer services, failed smog checks, auction history, miles per year and odometer rollback are all important pieces of information for you to know before purchasing your car from a private party or buying from a dealer.

Never allow a dealer to just show you a print out of a Carfax. Make them email or text you a link to the Carfax report. For additional measure I would recommend pulling an Autocheck report and comparing it with the dealers Carfax link. Autocheck reports can be had free by simply finding an online dealer that uses them and replace the vin in their url with the one you want.

When a dealership does a diagnosis on your car and gives you an estimate, do other dealerships have access to this data if you never do the work? For example, if my car was found to have water in the transmission, if I opt to not fix it at this one dealership (cancelling the work order), will another dealership typically see that diagnosis and estimate? Also, will that diagnosis end up in CarFax if the work was never even done?

This video could be misleading, there are car owners that service their vehicles themselves or have it serviced by a mechanic that does not pay carfax their fees to add the service on the report. Nothing wrong with picking the one with the history but telling people to not waste their time with those that do not show the history seems wrong.
@timeactor
@timeactor 4 года назад
The service is actually free for mechanics. Carfax gets the data. Using the mycarfax app you can upload receipts of oil and filter to your car which can be shown as proof of service. Yes somebody may have maintained a vehicle but if all you have to go on when buying a used vehicle is one with history of oil changes and one without - which would you pick?

except when there IS an accident history, you get very little detail of severity of the accident. I DID see one report, though, that used the term 'moderate damage' and there was an explanation of what that meant. however, on most reports, there is little information regarding severity.

Hi Graig, did a carfax on a lexus rx 350. came up as accident side swipe, had been sold at auction but the interesting thing too is that there was a "not actual mileage" warning. car is advertised as 148k but in the report it says the first owner had until 156k and the second until 175k....I'm seeing yellow maybe even red flags. I would have a reputable 3rd party mechanic check it out but only (like yo)once it passes preliminary inspection. thoughts? Instead I also am eye balling an 056 Lexus with the Toyota 3.3 v6. I've heard you speak highly of that engine also. Cheers buddy!😉

Question my husband is a professional mechanic (he does that for a living) and I’ve hardly ever taken my car to a dealer to get any type of service other than alignment, does that present an issue to a buyer since I don’t take it to the dealer so it won’t show as serviced much on the report ???
@TheDragonSeer
@TheDragonSeer Месяц назад
You've probably figured this out by now, but: CarFax won't show personal history on the report. If you use their Car Care service, this is only a way for the owner to track their maintenance. Information added here will also NOT appear on the official CarFax report. The best way to navigate this situation is to keep meticulous records of service done on the vehicle. Present your vehicle service records to the seller with receipts, dates, odometer mileage at time of service, any replaced parts receipts and serials, oil type and oil change interval, etc. This will fill the gap and may help increase the value of the car. The vehicle service records can be kept digitally or physically. People used to keep a condensed version of the records in their glove box. In older cars, there is a section for maintenance records log in the back of the Owners Manual. That being said, if you are trading in the vehicle to a dealership, they won't care about your records and will probably trash them. If you are selling to an individual, it is possible they will also not care since most consumers are not mechanically inclined. Some people stop logging their personal service records after a high mileage, such as 150k or 200k, because at that point it won't help very much.

If the car didn't get oil change at dealer, will it still show up in carfax? To get a used car get carfax and pre-buy inspection , anything else?
@YourCarAngel
@YourCarAngel 8 лет назад
CarFax will only show services that were performed at a facility that pays Carfax a yearly fee. Dealers usually have this arrangement and that is why dealer services show up. I often see Meineke and Pep Boys on a Carfax report. However most independents are not in the CarFax network.

I live in Florida and I’m looking at a car from a local dealer. The carfax says the car came from Oklahoma sold as a fleet or lease vehicle with 36k miles on it just a few months back. Is that a red flag? Why would a dealership buy a car from halfway across the country?
@belaghoulashi
@belaghoulashi 4 года назад
Funny thing. I would think cars from Oklahoma would be far, far less riskier than cars from Florida.

Don't know if it helps answer your question, but here in utah we get used cars from back east all the time it seems. Almost all Toyotas are from New York I swear. I asked the dealer we bought a car from why most of their cars are from back east and they said they usually have lower miles back east than here in utah with used cars.We keep cars for forever or till it's about dead, those cars don't sell well if at all. Those cars from back east aren't as sought after cars like they are here in utah, especially SUV's or anything with 4WD/AWD. Especially come winter time, there is a spike in SUV cars at dealerships. Some dealerships have ties to smaller ones around the country and will ship out anything that doesn't sell well in the area or has been sitting for awhile as well which helps out both dealerships. I noticed while I was in california on a mission; low riding cars, sports cars, anything that is classic, or are smaller more energy efficient cars dominate the roads. Here in utah, we have more rugged cars that are higher off the ground or have more power to get through snow or over rough roads for off roading or sports. Low riding cars in particular get stuck on hill transitions here and do very poorly in the snow so its rare to see them. Different cars sell better in different climates so dealerships that have a hard time with certain types of cars that sit for awhile and don't sell are lost profits. In this case that car space would be better spent on different type of car. They ship it off and they will also have less cars of a particular type and less supply which can lead to more demand. That raises the price up. An excess of cars that just won't sell; means they have to drop the price just to get it sold. They have an incentive to have just enough to meet demand, but not enough that it devalues what they have in stock. It could be anything really, but that's the best I can come up with.

I think CarFax is an ok tool, but I do not understand how can a car have no accidents but damage. I recently sold my car, and I was rear ended on it. The Carfax showed no accidents. Like really. No accidents, but rear bumper damage. Very misleading

Carfax has this problem with reports. Have you seen their price tag? The cost per report is very high. I tried checking the car at epicvin.com. Plus, their reports are much cheaper and more informative, and there are photos in the report, which Carfax does not have.

Hi, I was sent the CarFax buy the owner, but there is a discrepancy - there are 13 service records on the CarFax she sent, and 15 when I put the VIN: 1J4FA69S86P777454 into CarFax. CarFax doesn't give me the full report, the owner sent it to me. Could it be fake? Does that happen?

juliana valencia It depends on what those events are that you are referring to. If they are accidents, auction events, multiple registrations etc... those are bad events. If they are maintenance entries then those are great entries.

I would go with the other truck because its personal use. Fleet vehicles are almost always abused, and 5k on the oil is too much really.
@Dubz0408
@Dubz0408 7 лет назад
Not true. Fleet vehicles arent always bad since fleets make damn sure to maintain the vehicle, via dealer service, since even an engine light is embarrassing to them. Not saying customers dont abuse them. Fleet doesnt always mean rental, could be a company car. Also most cars can go over 10k miles on oil. Its not 1980 anymore.

There is never any perspective in these videos, like, are documented oil changes the most important piece of intelligence? What if the car ran out of water and warped the head? I just wish, somewhere, you would provide a very simple list of issues to consider when I buy a car. Those carfax records of very little value. Looking at a car, driving it, and having a mechanic check the compression in the cylinders, the head, leaks, the belts, the hoses, you are trying to convince people to way over think this. sad. this video was more nonsense, for people who have time to waste, or somehow, have a job buying a used car for them. I'd love to know how much you charge, being an angel, and all.
