Last year I spent 7 months living out of my transit connect and learned about the good and the bad of living in a van. Some of these things could be fixed with a larger van and a different build out, but none the less here are my thoughts.

You mean someone from the most "educated generation" ever ran into unexpected things they didn't like about eatin, shittin, cookin, tryin to bathe, workin, sleepin out of a 4.5' x 8' space etc, this can't be lol just messin but yea, i can see a lot of these sorts of vids comin out in the not so near future, or maybe not as I doubt most won't want to admit they flopped. On a positive note I see a TON of new capitalists/republican converts constantly as reality smack thems in the face HARD. I think every generation has these moments when fairytale land hits reality and then they take a step back and realize you were stupid. If you never had luxuries growin up, its not so hard to do without, but once you have, its hard to live this kind of full time lifestyle. I think its great for road trip/extended vacations, but full time, no way. #1stworldproblems I give you props for makin a go of it, don't think of it as a failure either, its a real world life experience and education you don't have to go to school for. will do you much better then the majority of 4 year schools can.

@@trodman9915 agreed. It blows my mind how much the uploader didn't base his build off of anything he really needed, or plan anything out before hand. I don't blame him for not wanting to live out of that thing. It looks soul crushing..and pulling out a loan on it and requiring full coverage insurance on top of that? Yikes. @@anninriverside755 I don't think it's a matter of not thinking the whole thing through so much as you don't know it until you experience it. So you can plan and research and still be wrong. I've been living in my minivan for almost a year and a half. Everything he said is true, but I would still pick my minivan over ever renting another room or apartment. The freedoms I have gained in vanlife I like more then the disadvantages of being a full time city van dweller. So I think it's less lying and more nothing is true for everyone and everyone is different. I think my job does give me enough time out of my van that I don't feel trapped by it. And that's a big thing to, all of us earn money different ways so what may work for a successful writer/travel blogger with a standing height van with all the modern amenities might not work for a factory worker living out of a minivan in San Francisco with little to no ammenities. The fantasy of the "full time travel" lifestyle is more at fault then van life itself. Even people who like it will admit it's tougher when you are tied to town by your work.

All good points you make. I'm a 20 year van lifer, and it all started as a trip all around the west, departing from Colorado, going to Sedona, Malibu, up to Big Sur, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Humboldt, Seattle, and near the Canadian border back to Colorado. I loved it so much, I just kept going to any where I wanted. Instead of $800 in rent, I put less than that, into traveling. I never have paid for even 1 night anywhere as I learned stealth, boon docking, truck stops, blm, rest stops (in the SE USA they have security guards which I liked), and since I was very stealth in my nice white clean Grand Caravans (with black sheer curtains I could tuck into the ceiling plastic, I was totally stealth) I could even stay in a hotel parking lot if need be, plus WalMarts. Then, in Cocoa Beach, after 20.5 years of van life, Covid-19 hit, so, I decided to rent a studio on the ocean so I could enjoy the beauty and health of the beach and ocean. It's now been 7 months of beach ocean life...plus hot showers (which I hadmemberships at community health clubs for only $1 a day [paid in 3 month terms] which had hot tubs, pools, etc!). I definitely think about going back into van life...and maybe mixing it with a studio here and there.

Get a cargo van with no windows in the back that has a metal partition which separates the cargo area from the driving area. That way your cargo area is very protected as thieves can't break in through the windows in the back (as there are none), and even if they get into the drivers area they can't easily access the cargo area due to the metal partition which locks.

When I sold my house in Germany my mortgage was down to 400 euro a month. I moved into a van, which cost me 350 lease plus tax, gas, insurance. What surprised me most was like the young man said> Van life is NOT I repeat NOT cheaper than a flat! Plus I was sort of unable to work because the hussle of finding water, parking space is so draining that u do not built up resources for daily work. It were the best 3 months of my life, but I found out, there is a reason most people live in bricked walls. Cleanliness, hands on supply like water, toilet, electricity, hot water and a personal washing mashine are perks of a certain way of civilized living. Would I do it again? Of course, but with a washing dryer combo and if I had access to a fixed monthly budget to really enjoy doing it. Also, everybody should try it, to appreciate what we take for normal like electrical sockets and hot shower on the press of a button...

@@bigballz4u Hi, I guess there are 2 groups of people the adventurous ones and the ones who have to join for monetary reasons. I belonged to the last group and went happily into it because I thought Oh that will be cheap! Well, it is not! Of course u are right if u have a mortgage of 2500 plus bills u save immediately, so its always in relation. At the moment, I am thinking of moving in a van, and again, I cant afford to buy one and built it. Van life looks like it is for the poor, which it isnt. U need quite a substantial amount to get started.Also its not easy to find a job on the internet because the typical callcenter job needs the cable which connects the pc with the socket in the wall, which u do not have. Working in Fiverr or something will not get u enough money to keep u going. So there are a lot of problems around it. I only wanted to point this out. Is it a great lifestyle? Of course, if u can afford it, like always in life. Like the homestetting farm or the cabin in the woods. Money is needed.

@GHSTTHERENEGADE 3 года назад
@@tarot-karma-online You get it. Van life is interesting but highly expensive starting off. You would have to take a load out to start your build and this isn't including remolding mistakes. My guess would be building a venture that would make you profit over time. I am currently working on a book but for it to work I would need to build marketing behind it in *HOPES* it takes off. What I learned thus far is 1) You will need an address that you vehicle is linked to and maintain it somehow as no insurance will cover you living in a moving object 365/24 out the year due to how dangerous humans are left to their own devices. 2) A hell of start off for your build. My guess is the lowest margin you can play with is 30k and this is not including if you have to hire someone to do the labor you aren't knowledgeable to do. 3) Learn where to park and have a security system in place. Too many people get into this life come from comfort zones. Not me, humans are opportunist and will jump on any chance they can. So have lock boxes, cameras, a protection will be another factor. This feeds into my next part 4) Isolation will be a close unwanted friend over time. Unlike what what most van lifers post, because of the sketchy side of the lifestyle you will have people keeping to themselves or their small circle. And the nomad life has all kinds of characters, from people on the run, drug addicts, unstable mental disorders, lot lizards, and so on you can bet your ass "community" won't be too much different than anywhere else I just a lot more in your face. 5) I seen your debate on money making online while on the road. Now that may be true what no amount about of cell phone, mi-fi, or public wi-fi (outside of a college library and good luck there) will ever capture upload and download like a home internet unless you are paying for the full package a month. For at&t and Verizon mi-fi you can add an additional 150 to your bill. And this is only going to work for you if the connection is worth a darn in your area. If the signal has to fight you lose a lot of data. Which means you would have to stationary in one location weeks on end unless you work a 9-5 in town. 6) Maintenance will be a bitch. Imagine a blown tire on the side of the road and that premium AAA is only good for 50 miles but the nearest spot is like 200 miles thata way. Nevermind the hotel that is breaking you over the head in price, and the sleezzy shop you gotta work with if something got damaged along the travel. Sheesh. This is what many who have done it forget happensor others who are going into it find out the hardway. I see we aren't also talking about how the people who leave go away drug/std free up only to come with one or both. The best way I seen van life is the engineer. She rents her home out,had her van built and lives out of that while working. She is double dipping and saving a fat profit while enjoying the life.

@@GHSTTHERENEGADE Wow, thats a very thoughtful explanation. Thank u for taking the time, and yes , you are right on every single point. This is what the happy vanlifers do not tell their viewers. If u want to make money, forget about the book. I have had 3 published on books on demand, and u cant live from it. If u want to work at home or while travelling, best thing in my mind is either creating websites, and I do not want to scare u if u have never done it. A lot of small businesses like lets say a mobile hairdresser do not need a wordpress or better page. U can make them one with a homepage building set up, where u use easy templates and charge them 300 to 500 quid. They do not have a fullblown website because they cant afford the 5000 they usually cost but the templates one for lets say 500 they can afford. i did this quite successfully. Also u do not have to work 9 to 5 with it. Next thing, which I also did is telephone sales. People always need sales people. thats a fact and u earn basic plus commission. I don’t live in an expensive part of the country like LA or NYC either. I do have maintenance costs on the car as that is just part of vehicle ownership. Spent last summer in a van with my wife. We traveled to a new state just about every other day though (36 total). Using a van as a permanent home is a lot harder unless you significantly modify your lifestyle to not need certain things OR have a van that is both big enough and well equipped with creature comforts. And our van was a V8 so power wasnt an issue, and gas was suprisingly not horrible at an average of 15-18mpg. Living in a van in rural areas (or semi rural where you can drive to public land for the night) eliminates a lot of the problems you mention (parking lots, worry about break ins, feeling trapped inside). I ultimately wouldnt recommend anyone try to live out of a van in urban areas for any extended time unless they absolutely have no choice or they just dont mind it. For us one of unexpected things that made life significantly easier and enjoyable was a fridge. Didnt think we needed it at first but got surprised with one as a gift and it ended up being our favorite part of the van, and really helped us avoid eating out. Finding out whats needed and what isnt for you is hard without trying the lifestyle out a little first. For us, the trip we did wouldnt have been possible without the van. Even with the cost of purchase and cost/hastle of "building" it, we still saved a ton of money vs what we would have spent on hotels and campground fees, and we never had to worry about booking a place or figuring out where we would make it to that night. Felt like total freedom. All that said, my wife and I now know that living full time together in a space that small only works in about 1 month chunks, and by the end we were very glad to be back in a house.

So not only is a personal toilet and shower FAR from priceless, it's not even worth $25 a day. It's not worth $12 a day. How much shitting and showering can someone be doing in a day to justify that price tag? What about when you're not at home? Don't you just use a public toilet of some sort anyway? I showered at a gym for $30 a month, pissed in a bottle when I was in my van and just used a public toilet whenever I needed it, while still having an "emergency" toilet just in case I couldn't wait.

Many of the comments here just say dude didn’t “prepare” or was doing it wrong. He was just being honest about what he found he did. I doubt anyone has everything planned out perfectly. I almost never see people talk about the mechanical aspects of living in a vehicle. I would need to “prepare” the vehicle to live this life (meaning the stuff that moves you, not the living space) and none of this stuff is cheap. My relatives bought a half million USD earth roamer and sold it within a couple years because it wouldn’t get down the freeway at modern speeds. The people who I see who are really killing the van life have some fairly serious money tied up and often seem to have some external support. You can tell me RU-vid and selling fairy dust pays the bills, but when a fill up is $100, some people either have deep pockets or are related to deep pockets. I’ve always said, the good builds are like rich homeless people. All that said... if you aren’t making anyone else’s day more difficult, do whatever works for you and enjoy yourself. I’d prefer to have a small home base with plumbing and tour the world to see different cultures. Whatever floats your boat, eh?

A really really good dependable mini van can be had for $3000 or less anywhere in the US. If you know how to find a mechanically reliable vehicle, or are willing to hire someone to help you, you won’t need “a bunch of money tied up in it”. Common sense goes a long way. Especially when choosing a home you will be spending a lot of time in. I wish people wouldn’t make silly comments like yours. It discourages some people from getting into this SERIOUSLY CHEAP AND RIDICULOUSLY EASY LIFESTYLE!!!
@MakeCriminalsIllegalAgain

And I don’t think anyone would be surprised to hear about your relatives experiences. I wouldn’t want to live in a prefabricated RV like that even if you paid me. Even some of the top dollar ones are made with garbage materials and things will start to fall apart quickly. Not always the case though. A very nice class D school bus (cab over or diesel pusher type) of the same size can be had for $6000 with 100k miles or so. Mechanically sound. Then it’s up to you how much you want to invest. Could be half a million or could be $500. It can be done cheap. Your relatives aren’t cut out for it.

It just seems like this was a very ill planned "van life" or rather like it was really just living the way someone would in their car, but it just happened to take place in a van. Eating out everyday isn't a direct result of van life. It's a result of not having proper storage for food or no culinary skills. I lived in my van for 3.5 years in L.A. and never once slept in a parking lot. Why? When I could just sleep in a residential neighborhood? Not in front of someone's house but maybe where there are a lot of apartment complexes and no one really feels entitled to think they can dictate who parks in front of or near their house. And I never had any break-ins in my van either. Sure it's always a possibility but that's also true when you park your car somewhere. If you're that worried then get a good loud alarm system and get a very durable trunk or safe bolted to the floor of your van. I'm glad there are videos like this out there though. I don't want too many people taking up van life. I want more people to think it's a miserable existence, so there will always be ample parking for me out there.

For me..gotta have a bed of course, countertop/desk spot for relaxing/gaming, bathroom minishower and learn how to hook up solar and some deep cycle batteries for your offtime powerneeds to run a tv/videogame console and /or pc. what do you enjoy now in your regular house/apartment? now mini size that and you are good to go.

The safety of a building can mean the difference between living a more calm lifestyle. And yes, the money going out is minimized (often) with nomadic life. Restaurant food is expensive & not as healthy if one can train themselves to just make things at home, etc. Also, the weather is pretty much always a real factor. Getting air while sleeping, etc. showering, baths, toilet 🚽....frig, cooking 🥘 baking...things to live really well while on the road. Are considerations (food & shelter) It’s well worth it for some, yes, a vacation expedition, exploring, etc is FANTASTIC!

Almost 9 months in, I must say that it is a learning process and-your 7th grade teacher was right - YOU'VE GOT TO DO YOUR HOMEWORK! There's also a saying, " Everywhere you go-there you are." If you have financial issues, vehicle issues, job issues, THEY ARE GOING ON THE TRIP WITH YOU. This lifestyle is not easy as some like to show. Unless you are retired and have a bottomless wallet- this is not free and isn't constant vacation mode. There's work to be done, everything takes longer in small stoves & sinks, there are other new/ different expenses like propane and small gear, laundromats. I have learned a ton, and hope to continue but some days are definitely not as fun as others. And for parking lots? I go there after dark. During the day I find parks, public boat launches and lakes/ creeks to check out. Doesnt cost anything and if you are lucky you get to meet nice locals and learn a bit about the area. Hope you take those weekend trips and enjoy the van a little more. Good luck!

For sure van life is not for everyone. But everything in this video is about the wrong vehicle, wrong laptop, and wrong or no prep.

No it isn't. The security concerns and the parking stress exist no matter what kind of rig or set up you have.

100% Jeep6242. He can’t call that “van life” he folded down the back seat and then wondered why it wasn’t working out as an accomodation, office, and love shack. Right van, right idea and right preparation and it’s a home, office and a place you can bring the ladies to. This guy might as well kit out a cardboard box and then complain it doesn’t work out real well as a home either.

@@automnejoy5308 OK. So most of what he said is about bad prep not 100%. Happy?

That's still valuable considering there are a lot of people who wouldn't consider what it takes to prep. Been watching Steffi Lee's van build videos and I was like, ok she's really putting a lot into it. Would definitely recommend those videos for anyone looking into it. I think if people were considering all the stuff she is, a lot would realize it's either not for them or that they will have to front more cash at the beginning to make it sustainable.

I've been in a smaller van for about a year now, while I would agree with most of these claims I love it. There's no such thing as a lifestyle without it's own problems and limitations. I just happen to prefer the ones that come with a van than the ones associated with renting or owning a home. To each their own! Great video! Very realistic and well thought out. Cheers!

It is always interesting to listen to someone’s experience and ALWAYS reading comments 😉.. Van life is not for everyone.. I have been living in a VW T5 for the past year and half, traveling from portugal to Norway. It has been amazing.. now I am stuck in France and it is great. To enjoy van life I believe you should take the time to build your van and not spare any details.. you should have a stationary heater too, it has to be cozy. Then the world is your home and home is where you park it! Am 48 btw

Great video, perhaps the most honest vanlife video I have seen, last 4 years I watch at least a dozen vanlifer videos a week, and this is truth people need to hear. after 4 years of research I have decided van life is not for me, I will be doing it for a few months in the summer but I am keeping my apt.

There was an article in Outside recently about thieves using device finder apps to locate electronics in vehicles parked at trailheads. Apparently then they can find out what is valuable before they break in, so they don't waste their precious time:(

The only thing I can deduce from this theft concern, is not to leave your van very long or hike very far. I would not be out of sight of my van unless I was picking up groceries.

Thank you for sharing. I think it is different for a person that is retired and able to have more freedom to stay in places that aren’t convenient for someone that needs to be by better internet services etc. I hate that you have to worry about theft, the reality is: it is a nasty way of life for a few and they are relentless and everywhere.

Surely living in a one room bedsit is no different except you're probably paying extortionate rent and bills. The whole purpose of van life is about travelling, if you are staying in one place all the time for work yes by all means pay out for an apartment but they can get broken into as well and you can't drive them to a safer place. Van life should be about escapism, it can be just as boring sitting around within four walls, as many have found out under lockdown.

That was my thought. I wouldn’t like being confined in such a small space - when you can’t get out. Also, having to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, in cold weather or rain, and bathing. Those are a big deal - to me.

I can so much refer to the feeling of fear for thefts! When I was living in the van traveling for 6 month I was scared in such places too so my boyfriend and I always went on hikes seperately so one can stay in the car. That was really stressful.

Yes, some planning about the work might have led to a more robust laptop or something like that which could take the place of the desktop. But it would have been an expensive laptop. A bigger battery or something, some way to keep it up. Of course he was in a building at first which was good and then got "kicked out", don't know what happened but maybe that was when the plan derailed, when the budget deflated. The money is always a concern, he looks like he should be monetized? But RU-vid does not make everyone a millionaire. I totally get his fear of theft though, that can happen anywhere. He is very conscious of not being able to replace things if he loses them. Needs to build up resilience and self sufficiency if he wants this to work. Or, maybe a long shot, get married to someone who likes this lifestyle so he's not doing it alone.
