What you said about somebody looking over your shoulder. I feel exactly that. I think we spend so much time in life being judged, especially on social media. But I came to realise last night that my sketch book is mine. And I can do what I like, how ever I like. Thank you so much - from a beginner 😁👍

I'm 67 and have been drawing my whole life. I took up oil painting after my kids were grown. But I've been so caught up in having the "right technique to get things right" that I felt I'd lost my creative and spiritual input. So I signed up for the free course and have been taking a more relaxed, fun view of things. I've never quite gotten along with watercolour: a little too watery and uncontrollable for me. But Toby's course has allowed me to not worry if my lines are a little wonky and the colours run together. Beginners will get important basics in picture making and the sky's the limit in terms of how accurate or creative you want to go.

It's so true that we judge ourselves harshly and grow impatience with the process. But you're right, we need to trust the process. I know that in the beginning of a sketch I'm hating my lines but after a few minutes it starts to come together and I find myself humming a tune, swaying back and forth like a child. I feel so happy when it comes together.

These are all brilliant tips. I have to agree, getting out of our own way and putting the perfectionist in the boot😳 is always a benefit. As artists we always expect more in the moment rather than realizing it’s an accumulation of lots of little incredible moments that make for a brilliant piece. It’s our consistency and willing to be vulnerable with ourselves wherein the magic lives. We are the ones who need to show up, the ART is always there it’s just waiting for all the rehearsals to be over.😉✨🧡

You’re such an amazing teacher!! I’m just getting back to art, but I’ve been doing it for years! I took drawing classes, watercolor classes, and your right, art does evolve!! I’ve often criticized myself, because I would like to do one thing for a year or two and then I would switch..and I would think well I’m not gonna find my way doing this! I hope that made sense! So I really love this video! Thank you!

I’m a very raw beginner and yours was the first channel I watched. I absolutely love your style and how free it is. It’s just my cup of tea. My style (if one can call it that yet) is a mix of your sketching style but more ‘in the lines’ when painting. I do ink and wash and I love that style. Thank you for all your tips and how obviously delighted you are to be sharing them. 😃👍

Very often I feel like I sketch loose just because I can't draw "better" (with details at the right place I guess). So I can't enjoy it and eventually I quit. I wonder if this is a common feeling. I also wonder what's the difference between sketching loose and inaccurate drawing.
@TobySketchLoose
@TobySketchLoose Год назад
Loose art doesn't stick rigidly to the scene in front of you - it relies not in accuracy but different strengths. If your drawing is accurate that is a skill, but if you are loose or abstract then you are making decisions, you are understanding what the art needs instead of just copying a scene. I would argue that loose art is far more artistic than photorealistic art. It's also Les time consuming and more about the artistist, than the scene. And if you question whats the difference between loose and inaccurate look at van Gogh, monet, picasso, more recently Hokney- are they accurate? Or are they taking constant liberties? Ps I'm not comparing myself to those guys, just trying to stop people thinking that not drawing accurately is a sin, or shows a lack of talent.
@elgatodiaz
@elgatodiaz Год назад
@@TobySketchLoose I see your point, but Van Gogh and co. could draw Bargue plates very accurately, and then they decided to choose a very different style and that made them unique. I agree with you, photorealistic art is quite boring in the end, but you can choose to be "loose" only if you can do something else. For this reason I don't enjoy sketching loose much, because I know it's not a choice for me, simply I can't do better than that. Anyway, I know I should try ti manage the way I deal with mistakes. Thank you for your answer :)

Watercolor Self /RU-vid taught for 2 years ; I joke I can barely write my name, let alone sketch! My successful photorealistic watercolor and even abstract attempts leave me drained. I find I’m less self conscious when I create line & wash. Remember It’s not a talent show, give yourself permission to feel joy when you create art, and share your ‘low talent’ art with the world

@@elgatodiazSure they could do it but it wasn’t their style and they’re famous for THEIR OWN style not because they could copy someone else. Art is about YOU and your perspective in your lifetime and enjoying what YOU are making. No worries, Have fun!
