It's a shame BYD didn't have the BYD seagull on display at the show, if it ever makes to Europe it'll maybe a better option and cheaper than a Silence S04.

Making the vehicle 'aspirational' ("Oh, look, Justin and Emily go to the golf club in theirs! How super! Okay, yah?") is marketing puff to blur the figures on that huge price-tag. Sixteen grand? Blimey. To appeal to the typical rich (yes, I did say rich) EV enthusiast who's probably already got a Tesla or two in the garage, things have to be 'reassuringly expensive', as the old Stella Artois lager advert used to say. Air-con? Just open a d*mn window. However stripped-down and basic the manufacturers made it, it'd still be better than pedalling a bicycle in the wind and rain. It needs to cost less than £5,000. So, just like the £54,000 Twike before it, yet another much-needed pleb-mobile for the masses will be aimed at bored wealthy people who fancy having another whizzy techno-toy to play with. What's the point? The EV nursery cupboard is already filled to overflowing. Make something cheaper and simpler. Forget about boutique chic and the Apple-Dyson-Tesla-Pilates-Golf-Club demographic.

A heads-up.... If you are a UK resident & own an EV, & haven't renewed your car tax this month, it would be prudent to tax it TODAY. As of 1st April next year EV's will be taxable. It is not retrospective, so if you re-tax it today you will enjoy 12 months free of road tax rather than the remaining months of your current tax. My EV was taxed in Nov last yr, I have just taxed it online today, so we now have 12 months free tax to run instead of 8 months.😁

I got a drive in the MG4 but as you say there was a mass of traffic and roadworks (and pouring rain) around the Excel which helped me get lost on the test drive route. I can confirm the in car sat nav worked pretty well to get me back! Jack Scarlett did a review of the DoGood which was released today. Perhaps because I am a bit older I liked the Morris van which took me back to my childhood with a sense of fond nostalgia.

i heard that Ora changed the name due to a legal challenge from Caterpillar, the people who make the diggers. i have not been able to verify this but it would make sense as a reason for why the name was suddenly changed from Funky Cat.

The Cyberster excited me the most and amazingly looked even better in the metal. The most fun cars I drove were the Ioniq 5 N and MG4 X power (its so fast you could unleash the power as you didn't need much room). However, the cars that impressed me the most as potential next cars were the Highland Model 3 (it was the most quiet of all 8 cars I tried) and the Ora o3 (very nice interior and amazing spec). The Volvo EX30 and BYD Dolphin did dissapoint however, the former for the interior feel and the latter for lack of regen strength and driving experience.

I was at FC-Live yesterday (Thursday 28 March) and also test-drove the BYD Seal - loved it, though it took me a few turns to get used to the reversed indicator/wiper stalks, and it's now on my shortlist for buying when I return to car ownership after a 12-year break (along with the Kia Niro EV and their EV6). Also, you weren't the only one to feel that Ora chickened out rather on the renaming of the Ora 03 - talking to one of their reps, that seemed to have been one of the most-asked questions they'd got, especially since their spec list next to the car still referred to it as the Funky Cat.

Yeah I kinda forgot the indicator stalk thing was unusual because the Maxus has the same but it is an odd choice.

I loved the Morris J-type van, and also felt it was a shame they renamed the Good Cat to some generic number.

Yeah I really like the Silence S04. It's too expensive though. Agree with You. At 12k it would be a good buy.

I test drove the Silence S04 on Thursday at the show. I REALLY wanted to like it (we have a 2013 Smart ForTwo ED at the moment) but sadly it didn't remotely meet my expectations. My wife and I went out together in it, so about 140Kg payload weight. It was noisy (more that the Smart ED which itself is not exactly quiet), so low it caught on the speed bumps, very poorly finished and the brakes are unassisted and need a really big shove to work at all. It's a lovely form factor and I like the removeable battery idea. I so wanted to like it. ;-(

@@ModernHeroes I was hoping it might have been a replacement for the Smart ForTwo ED we have, when/if that finally comes to the end of its life. We need a VERY narrow vehicle - we even have to fold in the mirros on the Smart ED to get it through a narrow gap. Back to the drawing board.

I took it out on Thursday as well, can’t say I was impressed. Ride was dreadful over poorly maintained roads around Excel and the brakes needed a lot of pressure to slow down two up even only at 20mph. I have test rode the scooter S01 before and was very impressed with its performance and handling so thought the 4 wheeler would do better.

I liked the show, good presentations, opportunity to speak to the presenters, all stands and promotions were very relevant. There wasn’t the usual space fillers selling garden furniture et al. Absolutely agree it was a fantastic advert for BYD, really professional people on the stand. Test drive of a Seal, simply lovely inside compared to the plain MG4. My favourite? Loved the converted 1960’s mini - ultimate nostalgia toy with the electrics hidden and interior design nicely echoing the original.

I think they’re locked in place - not 100% sure though. They’re also behind the doors despite the doors having the same circle on as the batteries.

Hi liked your video went to EE London on Thursday. Test Dr Byd seal loved it. Drive Tesla Ms @ mom. Loved the DVan but at £93995 rather expensive only sold 1 at show on Thursday. Do what are doing on the video.

EE show at Excel was disappointing, not a patch on the show at Farnborough a couple of years ago, probably less than half of the exhibitors compared to Farnborough. BYD was impressive, although the interior of the Dolphin was a bit cheap looking in places, it was still better than the MG4. Volvo EX30 was a lot more impressive than I expected. Ora 03 - I always loved the Funky Cat, but the sad truth is that it is now outclassed by the competition. As for MG Cyberstar was a beautiful car, but what caught my eye was the MG4 X Power, completely agree with the video, the green of the MG4 was stunning

The Silence is liable to theft imo because the battery can be easily removed. How it isn’t so easy to remove and take upstairs to charge every week at 40kg

Had the rental Rivian and Lightening F150 been converted to RHD or unchanged from US spec LHD? Premier league footballers apart I would imagine that renting a LHD pick-up here might be a huge insurance risk.

I wonder how long it'll be before there's second hand Silence 04s on the market though? If you think about the huge number of flats in the country, and the enormous fees being charged to leaseholders which the government is yet to do anything about (but has tentative plans for) there's a huge market for a car like object you can charge in your flat. It's no easy to dig up a concrete multi-storey car park and install your own charger, if the management company are sociopaths.

I would love to see reviews of the micro cars. My interest is primarily in L6e-BP. If you review L7 models, I appreciate if you talk about if they ar available as L6 and/or it is possible to install restrictions to get the registrered as L6. (My reasons for L6 is for young family members, until they can get a normal drivers license. And my neighborhood is mostly 30-50 km/h so 45 km/h is OK))

Silence is definitely available in L6 - but not here in the U.K. (because nobody would choose to buy one given the choice, there’s no special treatment for them over L7)

@@ModernHeroes in Norway we have different age restriction for license to drive L6 and L7 AM can start training at age 15, get the license to drive at 16 B can start training at 16, and get license at 18. I wouldn't mind an L7 vehicle, if we could temporarily restrict it to register as an L6 vehicle while necessary,

Excel Centre, the country's number 1 exhibition centre NOT to visit! Unless by train (take it a loan for the ticket) and you only want to remain inside the building.

MG4 XPower driven, not at the show but way back in September. The acceleration is Savage, however I paid the £7k extra and bought the Smart #1 Brabus instead.

To add to your ORA 03 'Funky Cat' section, I had a decent test drive and was pleasantly surprised. While it may have marmite looks, it has a lot of tech for the price! One thing that really stood out to me was, at 6ft 4, I’m able to sit in the back behind the driver’s seat in my position which is amazing in such a small car! It drives really well, with very smooth acceleration although a little more road noise than I’d like. Definitely a contender for my next EV.

The Everything Electric review of the Dogood said it's British built. Obviously, there was no detail about how many of the parts came from where. Was it just their body on a Chinese chassis or was it a ground-up British design/build?

There's no way that's the case - you can find them on Alibaba (see my previous video about the Ark Zero) The number plates on it were from a car import service...

“round trip” so you drove somewhere and drove back. Did you stay at your destination for any time at all or were you just delivering something? If you averaged 60 mph the journey took you at least 7 hours … so you stopped for at least one or more breaks … had you taken those (meal, coffee, toilet) breaks at places with a fast charger you could have made a journey of that size comfortably in my EV with two 15 minute stops.

These very small EV, what is the use case for them. They don’t seem overly practical, doesn’t anyone really want a car smaller than say a corsa. I’m not hating on them I just can’t understand who would buy them, and I am genuinely interested in the scenario where someone would buy one. I love EV and own a Tesla, but I just can’t get my head around who would want a car that small.

They’re great for places where parking is at a premium - think of it as a moped you don’t need special clothing / to get wet riding and suddenly they make much more sense.

My wife uses our Twizy every weekday to do a 30km round commute to work and back. It has more than enough range, the top speed is 85kph, there's only her in the car and it costs between €1-€1.50 to charge it up. I'd say that's a pretty good case.

Pay£20 to get in so you can be sold more stuff. Make sure you enjoy yourself having a free test drive with another guy sat next to you.

Managed to test drive the BYD Seal and Dolphin, both were excellent cars and I agree that sales will be good. The test drive was well organised but limited by the roads around the venue. The show itself was a little underwhelming but all the major players were there and got some good advice from Octopus and Givenergy on Solar and Heat pump installation. I will definitely go next year as I think with a few tweaks it will be brilliant
