Inmates listen to me good in my unit and I rarely get any disrespect. Sometimes I wonder if they respect me. How do I know this. I am pleasant enough and professional to inmates by being respectful and treating them how I wish to be treated. Sometimes I can't help but feel like some may think this is weakness. Or is it possible that my approach by inmates is appreciated so they are reciprocating by being respectful back? I am working in basically my prisons "max" so not too many offenders out at a time, and they only get about 2 hours out a day. I think for inmates officers like me are a breath of fresh air. In my facility there is still a quite a bit of old school mentality that CO's need to be "hard" and borderline rude to inmates and not help them out with anything. I don't act like that because it's not who I am and I will never be untrue to myself. Even some CO's I feel like view CO's like me as too "nice" but I honestly feel like their view and attitude is ancient. I rarely have bad shifts or disrespect there so maybe my style is working? Other CO's seem to have a lot more issues and disrespect from inmates.

I've been working the segregation unit at my prison a lot lately and I've been acting the same way. I'll be kind and respectful to them until they give me a reason not to be. There are a few legit headcases in there who tried pushing boundaries by getting me to do extra shit I wouldn't be willing to do (if I did it for them, I'd have to do it for everybody...), and when I made it clear I wouldn't budge, they'd fucking EXPLODE and start screaming at me lol. Threatening to kill me, kill themselves, kicking the doors, hunger striking, constantly screaming in an uncontrollable rage. Fuck those guys though, that sort of behavior and reaction is so over the top and unnecessary. The remaining 40-45 guys are all pretty understanding when I do have to say no, it's all in your tone, how you phrase it, and whether or not you listen to them. Some other COs will straight up say no or tell them to shut the fuck up before they've even finished what they were going to say. I'm only a few weeks in at this point, but I feel like I'm starting to build a pretty solid reputation in the units I've worked. Really just don't blatantly be an asshole, especially for no reason. Another thing I've noticed is the COs who are in good shape and obviously very muscular and strong tend to be the most chill and have the most respect, at my institution it's mainly the smaller out of shape skinny-fat type of guys who are trying to flaunt their badge and roleplay as RoboCop. One of them got punched in the face last week, and according to my supervisors and senior officers, ~99% of staff assaults are instigated and essentially asked for by the officer involved. I'm big as fuck, but I have no fighting experience and I'm well aware of that lol like you said; don't try to be someone you're not and you'll more than likely have no issues.

If you and an inmate are getting heated remember that you can step back, allow both sides to cool down and come back next tour and discuss calmly. I've found this has worked in majority of situations where both myself and the inmate are getting amped up to levels we will both do something stupid. Obviously not great for something that needs to be dealt with right here and now. -Canadian CO.

@@TierTalk in corrections have you ever thought about what youre really scared of is it the inmates is it just enforcing orders like you talked about in your last video is it being afraid that things are going to happen to you such as being raped stabbed or shot? are you afraid of just getting hurt in the middle of a fight? sometimes in corrections you just have to ask yourself what thing or what certain things am i afraid of ? i believe first if you realize whatever it is youre afraid of and aknowledge that it can help you feel less scared

Three years in April. Just completed my first Corporal Assessment. I was the guy that wanted to go to the streets, however after having kids and a family I've come to enjoy the added security within the walls. This however does not give you the right to be complacent.

The goon squad can't suppress a tier full of killers with bouncing betties. I've seen multiple officers on various videos play the "by the book and only the book" only to be laid out in a puddle of their own blood within four days of being a new hire / transfer

Not trying to be a jerk btw. It's just real obvious you need to tone it down before a transfer comes from a real hard place like the fed and they get an itch to see some intestines

Also your buddy there talking about controlling dialogue- you're never in control of the dialogue. I've watched large scale drug dealing go down around straight laced officers who were completely oblivious to what was being said even though they were yelling it across the pod at each other. Bro I dunno what kind of cake job you have but I watched a variety of videos and I can't speak for every state but- youd be either beaten half to death in the first week or you'd get beaten and raped (taking guards manhood or "authority" is incredibly common) and the most they will get even if they admit it isn't even a street charge if it's the right person with the right connections (more than half of the judges are dirty grimey in Louisiana) it's unbelievable the world you exist in and the one I got to see first hand. I was just lucky I could draw and tattoo like a mofo or I'm sure I'd have been in those same situations you would definitely find yourself in

So this was a long time ago but I honestly read your reply and had to answer. I don’t know what your facility is like but we not only have everything on camera. (There is only one room that inmates may be put in without a camera) not only is there cameras but they ALL have audio. And officers are very often listening. (The few things we don’t hear we rely on our informants to tell us.) Don’t get me wrong ofc you guys have shanks and shit among a lot of other stuff. Ik in my facility an officer has never been killed. And only two have ever even been hurt. All of us run a tight but respectful ship. Other than the sergeant ofc. Nobody fucks with her lmao
