Thank you so much for all of your videos. Starting academy April 9th! For people in the application process, don't lose hope. I applied back in November.

Anthony and Joe, Very informative and educational. Back in the early 1990's, I worked as a Mental Health Therapist in the local County Jail. In "Corrections Speak", I was a "Civilian" but my job was "hazardous duty." I only received some informal guidance from my boss. No real orientation or training. Looking back, it would have really helped ! Very good discussion.

Thank you sir. I totally agree with you. We need to do more when it comes to helping each other find our way in this profession

My state academy is 12-13 weeks long. I know someone who just "graduated" their 1 month long academy. I feel like my academy rushes through the important stuff to focus on unimportant things like drill and ceremony and then it produces terrible officers. I can only imagine how "trained" one is when they go through a month long academy

I agree. We do need more consistent when it comes to training across the board.

Man I want to listen but can't right now. We had like 465 graduate. It was a great experience but I was at that time going through the aftermath of the loss of my daughter.

The individualized effort dichotomy might come from the differences in corrections vs the military, there is some overlap in law enforcement and military service personnel. It's difficult sometimes to understand that our army training isn't always as relevant to every profession as we want it to be, i.e. my boot camp has nothing to do with understanding prison culture or manipulation. Correction staff don't get the kind of gratitude from the public that soldiers have perhaps received before entering a prison, and maybe that transition can leave the military folks looking for individual merit where there is less to be had.

Hey sir I just had a quick question so I’m currently working in corrections but I also want to join the national guard is a government job allowed to fire me or do they have to let me keep it while at basic training
@TierTalk

I am under the impression that they have to work with you. That is the practice I am familiar with.

I passed my Corrections Officer Exam in NYC with high 86, I've been called for orientation tomorrow. I have trouble doing my sit ups, can you tell me how the sit ups are? I heard they are incline sit ups, will the instructor allow you to hold a bar to pull yourself up while on the incline bench?
@TierTalk
@TierTalk 3 месяца назад
It depends on each agency in regards to the amount. Some may only look for thirty. But I am not familiar with any one allowing support to assist you in sit-up.

@@TierTalk Thank you for the quick reply. I'm going for NYC Corrections Officer Academy, can you tell me if they have running requirements. I'm 5 11" & 300 pounds and can run the 1.5 miles in 25 minutes on moderate speed. I work out 3 times a week, weight lifting, 2 hours cardio in an exercise bike and can only run at high speed about 2 to 3 minutes before being burned out and having to slow down. I have training for 2 years and am in decent shape for my age which is 40 year old man. I'm 5 11" 300 pounds and 40 years old. I have previous experience as a SGT/Supervisor for 8 years in my first company and hold a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice. I bring a lot of experience and academics from my law enforcement and Criminals Justice background to the department. I've dedicated my life to law enforcement and Criminal Justice, it's my passion and would love to be a NYC Corrections Officer. I'm just worried about the running part and the sit up part of the training. If I can pass that, then I know I'll make it in and pass the academy and graduate as a Corrections Officer with the rest of my class.

Hi sir. I’m 29 and in pretty good shape. I go to the gym 3/4X a week and have for about 2 years now. I’m planning on joining the academy this summer. I’m not good at running (I’m trying to get better) and can run a mile @13 min the fastest. How much trouble am I in??

I believe it may be a mile and a half and under 15 minutes. But keep pushing yourself forward. The key is about improving every day. Just don’t quit.

In West Virginia the Corrections Acedemy is pathetic. It's 6 weeks of sitting in a classroom with zero effort to pass. I heard it used to be more intense, but the lack of CO's caused them to make everything easier. They dropped anything fitness related, dropped firearms training. The instructors don't take their job very seriously either. It's a real shame. WV needs to work on their system anyway. Corruption runs deep.

They are hiring for numbers right now. I have a super overweight woman in our class. She couldn't even get up from the ground. We had to demonstrate the correct way from getting up from the ground. Her legs buckled like noodles. Took her a few tries to get up.
