Love what you said about running on the treadmill and the tips you gave! I live in Germany and it is now pitchblack here at around 5pm, which is when I usually get home after work, and I've started to dread the runs on my usual routes in the woods or fields, and I also don't like running in my town/on the roads as there's quite a lot of traffic which I find very stressful. I don't really mind the cold or the weather during winter but the dark scares me, have had a few really frightening and frankly traumatising experiences running in the dark, which means I really have to convince myself to go for a run after work, and I carry OC spray and additional stuff on long runs where I'm quite far from home in case I need to defend myself. Have never run on the treadmill before except for short warm ups before gym sessions, but will absolutely try it soon! Don't know why that never even occurred to me as an option during winter, but an hour on the treadmill seems more appealing to me than an hour running in the dark all by myself.

Thanks for the insight Linda. Sounds to me like you’d really benefit from treadmill running in your training. It’s lovely to be able to lose yourself with a podcast rather than being constantly checking your footing or in your case worrying for your safety. Hope you get on with it :)

@@BenIsRunning reckon you could get a couple of videos out of it 👍🏻… one of the only problems though can be that most public treadmills don’t have anywhere to place your device displaying Zwift (such as your phone or iPad) which can be a bit of a pain. I was very fortunate to be able to train with former Great Britain and commonwealth games marathon runner Keith Anderson 2.17 at Boston aged 41 who did most of his quality sessions for the marathon on a treadmill. Where running on a treadmill benefits you is consistency of your pace when doing your speed workouts especially if the weather is bad, it helped me get to the low 30s for 10k.
@joefaifer
@joefaifer Год назад
I'm slowly starting to like the treadmill as well. My only issue is that all of the treadmills at my gym cap out at 60 minutes, and you have to reset the machine mid run if you want to go longer. It's definitely beneficial if you are dealing with a *slight nagging injury. Great vid 👍

I did my Easy Interval Method (by Dutch champion Klaas Lok) on treadmill yesterday. 6 x 1k at half marathon pace, then 4x 100m, using the Altra Vanish Carbon, which are great. They made this workout really easy, so much bounce. I am glad to see Altra getting their name out there, as they do some great shoes. Treadmill running is really useful, and it gives you a lot of control over pacing. The Stryd footpod is great for recording treadmill runs. Zero drop shoes are great, they help stretch out the achilles, and if you ever get achilles pain, you can use shoes with a drop, which then take the strain off a bit, or as part of shoe rotation.

@@BenIsRunning I tend to use the Vanish Carbons for track and treadmill speed tempo and threshold sessions, and for the odd 5 or 10k race on rougher surfaces, where my other carbon shoes, Saucony Endorphin Pro 3, would feel unstable or dangerous. I definitely rate the Altra Vanish Carbons as Altra's best shoe. Their Rivera is a good daily trainer, though a more conventional shoe shape.

I always run my 'flat' runs with the incline on 1 percent, and the 3 months prior to the marathon I just did was exclusively treadmill, on the day I performed better than expected, ofc some of that is down to the race atmosphere in my first marathon but training with the slightly incline permanently along with the heat seemed to help but not sure, originally began on the treadmill as was injured for a month and didn't fancy running miles away and it flaring up and stuck on the treadmill

At my age (65) I can't do too much on the roads, the hard surface smashes my legs up. Due to work I can only run in the dark which rules out any off road running so I am more or less forced to use the treadmill. Personally, I would not do an easy run on the treadmill but do some form of hard session which involves constantly changing either pace or incline. I find this takes away the boredom factor. Even so, about an hour is all I can take! I can't watch TV or listen to any podcast when running on the treadmill; I tend to lose concentration and fall off the damn thing!
