Right now I’ve given up social media (FB, Twitter, Insta and Snapchat) indefinitely as I realized how much of an addiction it is. But in the past I’ve tried to check once in the morning and once at night-I think in general a good rule of thumb is to save scrolling, etc. for moments like nighttime when you know you’re not necessarily sacrificing real-life interactions, compared to checking in the middle of the day around friends or family, when you would be.

Love your point that when you say yes to your phone, you’re saying no to something else. Really thinking about limiting my social media use to a few time a day so I can be more intentional about my time. I recently got an Apple Watch and it really allows me to put my phone down and leave it since I never have this “what if” feeling if someone calls/Texts and it’s important . Instead of starting to scroll social media after checking a message on my phone, I can just read and dismiss it on my watch and reply if needed.

What do you guys think? Do you ever feel a little anxious or disconnected from real life because of social media? If so, what are some of your remedies?

I feel anxious in the sense that what I am doing isn't as cool or meaningful if I do not capture a cool photo of it and post it for others to see. It really takes me away from the moment because my intentions are wrong. I also am distracted from my family and friends who are visiting me when I take a break to scroll through instagram, which I will forget about in ten minutes, but I will never forget the conversations and memories that I could be having with those people. I am so excited to implement some of your technology guidelines into my life and future family! Thank you!

yes!! good thoughts Mia! It really is crazy how quick and easy it is to feel the pressure of living adventurously and instagram worthy. When in reality I'm finding that the boring and the mundane and the non instagram moments are really where the beauty and joy and depth is hidden!

This video is awesome! I love the steps you have in place for your family and in your home. I realized my addiction to social media was way more real and severe very recently. I decided to combat it by choosing to read rather than scrolling through FB or IG. Instead of falling into comparison mindset by scrolling for hours, I have been choosing to grow my knowledge by reading books I have put off reading for years. I actually started with Love That Lasts! (Incredible book. I love y’all’s humor & vulnerability!) I do have a question though. As a single woman who lives with 3 roommates, I often consume RU-vid/Netflix in my room, so as to not bother my housemates. Do you have any tips to adjust the “no phones in the bedroom” rule to accommodate someone who doesn’t have a family yet? I don’t have issues in the intimacy realm (bc single lol), but as for the not harming sleep or not centering life around screens. Just thought I’d ask. Thanks for all the wisdom y’all continuously share with others!

One I use it mostly to update myself on people’s life but lately I’ve been going through some pain because of people so I take myself off social Media and spend my time watching videos for fun and learning. Also I recommend doing something that you like besides social media for a few minutes a day. It can be anything but make sure it’s not anything social media. Honestly my life has gotten better at being honest and not putting up a front. I’ve learned more and more how to talk to people like I used to

I think that this is one of the most interesting topics to think about in this generation. As a future teacher and mom, I do not want any of my kids or students to put down the toys, books, family games, dinner table conversations for a screen. I have seen their effects firsthand through babysitting and student teaching and kids just aren't kids anymore. Thank you for bringing this into the light and for providing us with such practical ways to live freely from the bondage that technology and social media can have on us. Let's keep the conversation going!

It seems like social media is mostly just us trying to build up a following around our "brand" or "business" to make us feel better about ourselves so we don't have to deal with our hearts. I'm just as guilty of doing this as anyone. Realistically, there's not a lot of money to be had in creating content just to share with others. We almost have become desensitized to the idea of only posting the best content that we possibly can. We definitely need more boundaries in our use of technology. I'm reminded of this every time my kids want to spend time with me. They are 8 and 6 so they are innocent to the temptations that we as adults face always being connected to people on the internet.

I personally believe that we live for people’s praise through our IG posts to a certain extent. Like I got upset if certain people or a certain number didn’t like my post. Like I Legit got mad

I have Autism and social media has actually helped me to connect more with the world and has helped me to communicate with others. I found it so interesting to hear you mention the non-verbal aspects of communication. I, like thousands and thousands of other Autistic people, find non-verbal communication (facial expressions, hand gestures etc) to be confusing and face to face interaction to be unpredictable and frightening. Social media has helped me to develop communication skills and feel part of a community. These skills have transferred into ‘real life’ situations as well! I know of other Autistic people who are non-verbal and others who have crippling anxiety, yet they now have the ability to communicate through typing and clicking. I understand that your message applies to the majority of social media users but just wanted to share another perspective! Thank you for your teaching videos, I watch them every day and know most of them by heart! God bless you and your beautiful family ❤️

One thing that’s been a major help is deleting my social media apps! So whenever I want to check FB/IG I have to go onto my phone’s browser, type in the site & log in again - this slower process has helped me to stop compulsively opening & checking the app. I definitely want to get better at being less dependent on my phone (and I’m only starting to realize the extent of the habit to reach for my phone in any in-between moments) but this is at least a start. Thanks for the great tips!

I definitely have been giving myself 15 minutes in late morning, noon and evening on phone. Also when I first wake up I make it to where my phone isn’t the first thing I check. I do many others things before checking it. It’s been really nice to set standards on phones. There is so much information out there and now I’m at a point where I just want to enjoy the moments with my family and make memories and serve the Lord.

Right now I am in an offline social media phase, it´s been a month and I´ve helped me understand what kind of thoughts are linked to the feeling of going to IG, or posting something, and what I expected from others to see on my social media. It´s been hard but I think is necessary. I will think about the tech manifesto It sounds great.

I’ve noticed for me that if my phone is the first thing I grab in the morning, then it’s what my day will be centered around. So I’ve been more careful to not reach for it as soon as I open my eyes. But rather started reaching for my Bible, it helps me focus myself on Christ and I’m not as prone to stay on my phone for longer then necessary throughout my day

Great video; one of my goals for 2018 was to be on my phone (mostly Instagram) less! Since the beginning of the year I started turning my phone completely off by 8:00 PM every night (unless I'm at work/driving home late) and remembering how many times I go on Instagram. I also keep my phone out of my bedroom.

Thank you this was well timed. I have recently gone back into my Christian faith and so YouTubing a lot at the moment. The problem is there is so much information out there that I don't know what is right or wrong. Christians seem to be battling with one another and are warning us about staying away from certain Christian Pastors etc and do this and not this but another pastor says its ok to do something that another pastor said was not ok. My mind is overwhelmed!!! This is where Social Media makes me go crazy!!!!

Kelka Tuppein RU-vid has really helped me in my walk of faith but the most real and substantial information will always be the Bible. Always stay in the Word and plug into a church with bible studies. You will begin to understand God and the Holy Spirit will guide you and it will be easier for you to discern if a certain video or teaching is right for you and disregard what isn’t.

Love it!! You and Aylssa you make a video on Enneagram! What number you both are and how your personalities draw you closer to each other and Jesus. Maybe also share how your personalities clash but how you work through that. As Bob Goff said “I’m not trying to be like Maria and she’s not trying to be like me, we’re trying to be like Jesus” Would love to hear you and Aylssa on this subject 🤙🏽

I’m going back to school and I hung out with a really bad group and the friendships ended really badly in ways that they talk poorly about me and put me down and also spreading lies to my close friends. I want to handle it in a way that is humble and God like but i don’t know how and it make me feel belittled. If you have so tips on how to overcome some of these things that are happening please let me know.

Well I don't know if it's a remedy, but I don't have a smart phone. I have a cell phone that can make calls and texts, and that's it. It doesn't even have a camera, it can't make emojis, it has a capability to connect to the Internet or put apps or something on it, but I don't know how it works and I think we actually had it disabled because it was constantly trying to connect for some reason and it was costing a cent every time it tried. Another thing that has helped is that with my family, $100 worth of minutes are put on everyone's phones at the beginning of the year. We don't use our phones much, so there's no need for the monthly plans, but when we do use them, there's a responsibility behind how much. What's nice about not having a smart phone is that you aren't always connected to everything else. I'm not getting hit with notifications all the time and I feel I am better off for it. However, I am a bit addicted to my laptop. :/

How do you deal with not having your phone in your room? I’d like to start that but my thoughts are what if something happens and someone is trying to reach you with an emergency but you can’t be reached because your phone isn’t in the room? Or what if there is a fire and all but your room is blocked and you need to call for help or something? How do you deal with stuff like that?

My biggest problem with social media is the comment section. Mostly with videos in which christians share their opinion (for example the 'middle ground' videos from jubilee). A lot of the comments are about how judgemental/prude etc Christians are. It always gets me because no, thats not true most of the time. It breaks my heart to think people see me as judgemental/prude/stupid or whatever because I believe in God and I find it very difficult to not respond to them. Maybe I should just stop reading the comments....

Pamela Hidalgo, I would also like to know this. I use to be someone always on my phone and don’t get me wrong some days I find it hard to put the screens down, but I have learned to put it down a lot of the time. I have found myself hanging out with a group of friends and out of 6 of us I’m normally the only one not looking at my phone. Sometimes I can be like come on guys look at your phones later but other times I just don’t want to be in the place of telling someone to put there phone down and I have got up and been like I got to get going because i don’t want to sit there with everyone watching or scrolling through something.

I am Gali, in the year 1980 I lost all my hopes, I became a thief and club dancer. At that time I heard about Christ, the Lord spoke with me though the Scripture. JOHN 14:6 “I AM THE WAY THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE NO MAN COMETH UNTO THE FATHER BUT BY ME.” I surrendered my life to Lord Jesus and confessed that He is the only Lord and died for my sins to deliver me from all my sins (Karma). When I totally surrendered my life to the Lord He has delivered me from evil spirits, which suffered me about 6 years. I became a new person in Christ. I love Bible so much and started memorizing the scriptures. By the grace of God I have memorized Five Thousand (5,000) Verses from the Holy Bible. Every week I also remember all the verses. Morning time I remember about 1500 verses for praise, worship and prayer. (Including 100 Psalms). This practice helps me to grow strong in the Lord and also to help others for the glory of the Lord. John 14:6 is my favorite verse; I preach this word to many unsaved people that they may find the peace in Jesus Christ because He is the Lord of all. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GWViryWWch4.html
