Great vid. However, you guys don't tie a stopper knot in the ends of the rope when abseiling??? Thats super dangerous and very bad practice (one of the most resons of fatal climbing accidents).

Why did you choose not to back up your belay devices with a prussik for the abseils? To save time?

Hey Maurice, thanks for your comment man. I think in that situation I felt I had enough control of the rope, there was enough friction between the device and the rope that I didn’t feel I needed the Prussik. Trust me, usually I do use a Prussik for abseiling, but sometimes if I feel it’s maybe a bit overkill I avoid it. There was one time that I used a Prussik and there was too much friction it caused me to bounce harder on the rope as I descended and it actually caused a core shot in the rope by rubbing against a rock above me. Strange situation, but something I never forgot. Hope that answers any questions. I am a massive advocate of keeping a Prussik on my harness at all times :)

@@RobbiePhillips Thanks for taking the time to reply, it's good to get an insight into your thought process and decision making. The bouncing of the rope causing abrasion is something I hadn't considered might occur as a result of the prussik. The only reason it jumped out at me is because I'm doing my Rock Climbing Instructor (formerly SPA) training at the moment, and so naturally backing up abseils is drummed into us. I found your video very enjoyable and thought provoking, not to mention inspirational. Thanks again for sharing!

Maurice Luffman I usually do back up my abseils, especially when rock fall is likely. In this scenario there was a lot of angles the rope dragged against rock as it wasn’t that steep higher up so I wanted to avoid the abrasion. I guess you just take situations as they come. There is no blanket rule for all, but there are some things that are good to always do and Prussiks on your harness is one of them, and I think 90% of situations I would back up my abseil :) hope that’s helps

@@RobbiePhillips It does help, very much so. Thanks for your perspective! All the best, Maurice
