Is Gordon Murray's T.50 Supercar The Best Driver's Car Ever?
The 1,000 HP Naturally Aspirated V12 - • This Brilliant Engine ...
Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - goo.gl/VZstk7
Gordon Murray wanted to build the best drivers car, period. The formula is pretty simple: lightweight, central driving position, naturally aspirated V12, manual transmission, and rear wheel drive.
The formula sounds great, but it’s actually a rather difficult thing to market. What are you going to brag about? The V12 is small, and not all that powerful. The manual transmission shifts seem pathetically slow in comparison to today’s stupid fast dual clutch transmissions. People don’t care nearly enough about weight, but they do care about horsepower, and 654 horsepower can be found in family sedans these days.
When other companies are making new supercars, they’re picking what they want it to be good at. Best track car, quickest acceleration, highest top speed. But these accolades only last for so long, and they don’t even mean that the car is fun to drive. But they’re bragging rights. When it comes to buying supercars, there’s a lot of ego involved. Marketing teams obviously know this, so cars are flashy, exotic, and break records to make talking points. And while I certainly admire the engineering that goes into it, many of these exotics aren’t all that special to drive.
Here’s an example with two cars. For about $36,000, you can buy a base Mustang GT with 460 horsepower, or a Club ND Miata and Brembo package with 181 horsepower. The nearly 300 horsepower bump is all most people need to hear, and the Mustang routinely outsells the Miata on a monthly basis, by as much as 10 times the quantity. The fact that the MX-5 weighs 1400 lbs less, an absurd amount, just doesn’t seem to be an effective talking point. Very few people care.
So why is this T.50 good? Simply put, because it’s fun. I’ve had the privilege to be able to drive hundreds of different cars, and from my experience, the amount of money you spend on a car doesn’t determine how much fun you’ll have driving it. And while the T.50 is silly expensive, it says forget the records, we’re building something rewarding to drive. It’s not about ego, it’s about having fun, and that’s the edge it has over all of the other supercars today.
From The Gordon Murray Automotive Media Kit:
"The T.50 has been engineered to be the purest, lightest, most driver-centric supercar ever. Improving on his acclaimed McLaren F1 “in every conceivable way”, Professor Gordon Murray CBE is leading the team that will begin building customer versions of the 986kg supercar in January 2022. Justifying its £2.36m (before taxes) price tag, the T.50 promises to deliver an unsurpassed driving experience.
It is powered by a 100% bespoke 3.9-litre, 663PS V12 engine that revs to a record-breaking 12,100rpm, and features the most advanced and effective aerodynamics ever seen on a road car - aided by a 400mm rear-mounted fan.
The global premiere is the first time the clean lines of the exterior and the driver-focused interior have been seen. From his first ballpoint sketches, to every engineering and design detail, Murray has led the Gordon Murray Automotive team and briefed and overseen suppliers to drive the project forward at an unrelenting pace. Murray’s design for T.50 was the 50th in a prestigious line of race and road cars he’s penned over his illustrious 50-year career - both reasons combining to name the car T.50.
The most dominant characteristics of the T.50 exterior design are its purity and balance, free from the wings, skirts and vents that adorn most modern-day supercars. The clean surfaces are enabled by the most advanced and effective aerodynamics ever seen on a road car, resulting in deliberately simple, beautiful lines and a timeless appearance."

@mike brink for which electric vehicles though? I know the Porsche Taycan has a two speed transmission but I assumed that was for higher top speed since it's much more performance-oriented than most EVs on the market? It's not necessarily applicable across the board to every electric car.
@Walkerswell
@Walkerswell 3 года назад
mike brink Bicycle analogy isn’t necessarily a great one. ‘Easier’ in that case really means less force, but you have to pedal more. Work = force x distance, gears allow you to apply less force over further distance or visa versa, but from a physics perspective you don’t actually do less work, you just spread the work out over a longer time. This is helpful as different motors like operating at certain amounts of force (torque in a motors case) and at certain speeds, but human legs and electric motors are quite different so it’s not really a useful comparison other than to provide a basic idea of what gears do. Just because gearing can be useful, doesn’t necessarily mean it always is.

The funny / weird thing is we may end up seeing a direct comparison between lightweight and fun to lightweight and outright performance with both T.50 and the Aston Martin Valkyrie rolling out to customers relatively close together. The use of the fan is brilliant, and you explained it very well. More downforce at low speed and under braking, and lower drag at high speed, all due to the fan (and valves). Very good use of active aerodynamics, without sliding skirts or variable surfaces other than the moving wing. Low weight is extremely important and translates directly to fun. My Tesla Model 3 Performance will do most of what my friend's Lotus Exige will do, but must work much harder to do it. The Exige is much more fun to drive, particularly on tightly twisting roads. Low weight would be my number one criteria for a performance car driven for fun. The weight of T.50's chassis and drivetrain is incredibly low. Undercuts his classic McLaren F1. For anyone who wants to see how fun a light car is, drive a Lotus Elise or Exige.

Great video, thanks very much! THE FAN: I think you've missed one important aspect of the fan's purpose. Gordon Murray has said elsewhere that a function of the fan is to move the centre of downforce forward from the diffuser area, to be much more central in the car. This is important because that means that the car's downforce is much more balanced w.r.t. it's centre of mass. This will significantly improve its chuckability into corners, because the front end will be so much better. Note there's pretty much no front end aerodynamic downforce components. THE FUN FACTOR: Gordon Murray has for years referenced polar moment of inertia as being a key parameter of car design for "fun". That is, how close to the centre of mass is the car's mass? For example, a car where the engine and gear box are at either end of the car may well have a 50:50 weight distribution, but it will much more strongly resist turning into a corner simply because all the weight is at the ends of the car. With all that weight converged into the centre of the car, the same weight vehicle will have a much better steering response. The same goes for the polar moment of inertia in the other 2 planes also - it's best if everything is in the middle. So yes, tyres are very good these days and a heavy vehicle handlers like never before, but the same tyres on this car are going to make for phenomenal handling. The fan has a role here too. By not relying on wings and splitters to generate downforce at the front and back, he's saving weight in the structure of the vehicle at the front and the back because he's not got the downforce at those locations. Instead he's placed the downforce in the middle of the car, where you want the balance of downforce to be in the first place and where you want the structural mass to be also. Gordon Murray has often been critical of mad cars with monstrous engines primarily because they generally end up with some enormous weight positioned away from the car's centre. I can recall his article about the Bughatti Veyron, basically admiring what an good job Bughatti had done to keep the polar moment of inertia as low as they did, contrary to his initial fears, given the size of engine they'd squeezed into the car. RPM PER SEC: You mentioned the responsiveness of an NA engine, but the figures for this engine are off the scale. 28,000 rpm/s. The NA McLaren F1, which we still think of being pretty damned phenomenal, is "only" 10,000 rpm/s. Gordon Murray is clearly using this car to correct the "mistakes" he made on the F1; no bag for a fuel tank, using proper lights instead of ones borrowed from a bus, normal sized tyres, not hiding the gear shift mechanism, making the air conditioning work, that kind of thing. The motor generator on the crank is quite important - it provides electricity for the fan, but also the electric aircon pump. By not having a belt driven aircon pump he doesn't need to design one that can survive the rev range between 0 and 11,500 rpm (or whatever it's geared to) and the 28,000 rpm/s speed change.

This is not really a whole new car, he is just rebuilding the F1 because, it is his lifelong dream and unlike most of us, he feels the F1 was not good enough.

Great video as always. I think you may have miss characterized the use of the fan just a little bit. As you stated down force and drag increase with the square of the speed. Therefore the effectiveness of the fan is much higher with speed. If it decreases braking distance by 10 m from 150-0. We can assume the majority of that increase happens from 150-50 and the benefit below 50 mph is negligible. So if your approaching a corner at 150 and can brake 8m deeper to make the corner at 50 I would say that is a justifiable benefit. But at normal road speeds I would think it is hardly noticeable.
@EngineeringExplained
@EngineeringExplained 3 года назад
I think you provide a very fair assessment (as shown in the video, the effect is more prominent at higher speeds). That said, when he says "downforce doubles" folks might think this means it has massive downforce, when it does not. It's a modest bump. That was my point.

@@EngineeringExplained you have failed to make your point and until that board has a unit of pressure on it, you can not make the assessment or assumption on how much additional downforce is generated by the fan. if anything you proved the car has a low coefficient of drag. and an engineer knows that lift(negative downforce) is different from drag. for all we currently know the fan may just keep the air at the same velocity as if the car were moving at speed, which over your 150-0 curve means the downforce stays at an amount equivalent to 150mph during 150-0 deceleration. effectively doubling the downforce during braking event. also 50% increase in "High Downforce Mode"(not double, you mis-read it in the same document i did) is not a modest bump, thats conservatively 20% more velocity you can carry around a corner.

It's everything opposite to the track car, laptimes are not a priority. It has narrow and non track focused Michelin ps4s tires. Soft suspension Low downforce. Relatively low horsepower and torque Slow gearbox. Only good thing (in track car terms) is insanely low weight.

It's a shame we won't have top gear fastest lap times scoreboard. Love to see this go up against the Valkyrie.

Yes! Slim, light cars for the win. Not fat bulky, chunky cars. Cars should be under 900kg/2000lb, they should be smaller than modern cars, slimmer, with the nice proportions and sizes of what many 80s and 90s cars had and they should be fun. We need an 800kg, 400hp sports car.

That fan is not 'underwhelming', nor is it a marketing stunt. You should have watched more videos on it before saying that.

Everyone's so performance-minded these days. Koenigsegg fans(I am one too, love the Gemera) have become the old Buggati fans(I am one too, love the second version of the Veyron) saying "More horsepower and Kmph records". Ignorant to the fact that this car as Gordon Murray clearly says as he said with the F1 are not record breakers.

An important purpose of the fan is it's ability to allow a body shape that is exceptionally elegant, as the fan adds enough aero adjustment that funky body additions are unnecessary. And the fan is not complex, it is electric and quite simple. It speaks to the changing aero conditions at various speeds in a rational way without forcing an aircraft aesthetic.

@A real bisexual petrol-head keep on enjoying living in your inferior country. If you hate America so much stop consuming so many American products like this video made by an American. Might aswell stop watching 90% of movies and tv aswell.

I would rather get this that tests the driver with the manual transmission, then some robotic trip. This is a man's sports car.
