One of the biggest complaints you hear about BMWs is that they are unreliable. In this video I talk about 5 ways of keeping your BMW reliable and on the road for many years to come. I've owned BMWs for about seven years now and I own 3 BMW products at the time of filming the video. This gives me a good perspective on what to expect and how to keep BMWs reliable.

1) Make a dedicated folder for maintenance items you replace 2) Start buying tools to work on the car 3) find other bmw enthusiasts so you can get help or advice 4) build a good relationship with a good Indy shop
@SimpleCarGuy
@SimpleCarGuy 4 года назад
That's a great list and makes a lot of sense! There are certainly items that are better left to the professionals, so it's good to have a reliable shop to go to.

Very good common sense information. Changing the oil is #1 for the life of the car, it's crazy how the interval increased from 3k/3mo to over 5k mi. I still stick to 3k/3mo and my engines go beyond 300k. Also, I like how you stress the car needs to be driven. If a car is not driven, often, seals can dry and oil leaks can start much sooner than not. I know you touched on it, but it needs to be said again, on the turbo cars, don't use low octane gas. Tx for the vid.
@SimpleCarGuy
@SimpleCarGuy 4 года назад
You are exactly right! Those seals are not meant to be sitting and I'm surprised when people are happy to find a car that's been sitting for a few years as if it a good thing. Thank you for more detailed information!

I live in a highrise with an underground garage, and still, I did a lot with my car myself (E92 335i N54). Changed sparks, coils, battery, brakes, replaced and lubricated caliper bushings. Everything except fluids I can do in the garage.
@SimpleCarGuy
@SimpleCarGuy 4 года назад
I lived a highrise until about 2 years ago and tried to do everything myself as well. Some items you just can't do in a parking garage, but I've done a couple jobs at friend's house. Also, I had an e92 335i with an n54 for 4 years! I loved that car.

I’m glad you made this video. I have a 2015 BMW 328xi. I love it. I also have a suv and let my BMW sit in the garage and tend to drive it on weekends only to keeps mileage low. After watching this I like how you mention “drive the car, they’re meant to be driven.” Although I want to keep the mileage low, I think you’re right about driving it. Thank you! Have Fun driving!
@SimpleCarGuy

That is awesome! I've always been a big advocate of driving these cars and I hope you do! No use paying insurance etc and let it sit.

I can add to this to frequently visit the BMW forums for advice and the experience of others... Just to add I changed my interior bulbs to LED and that is a much better illumination and it uses less battery power.....
@SimpleCarGuy
@SimpleCarGuy 4 года назад
That's a great advice, I should have included that in the video. Forums, groups and friends are an awesome resource for information. I might look into LED bulbs, I think it would give my Z4 a little bit of modern touch.

The main issue all BMWs have is failed cooling system, valve cover and oil pan Gasket leaks and some electrical issues sometimes. Other then that these cars are awesome. Also i agree it's best to keep BMW engine stock only and not modify them. These cars are very picky and do not like modifications or cheap parts installed.
@SimpleCarGuy
@SimpleCarGuy 4 года назад
Definitely agree with the cooling system issues, especially those electric water pumps. At least BMWs are fun to drive!

The E89 is the best looking BMW ever made! Great advice! Those of you with the E89, make sure that the auto stop/start button on the passenger side is always on like he said. Crazy stupid "feature " considering it might save you only a couple hundred bucks over the life of the car. Compare that to the wear on the starter and no thanks.
@AudiophilMD
@AudiophilMD 4 года назад
Auto stop/start disable button that is.
@SimpleCarGuy
@SimpleCarGuy 4 года назад
Exactly! The wear on the engine and other components is not worth the few cents you save on gas. The later revisions seen to work much better, but on the early years of auto start/stop, it's not worth it. Thanks for watching!

Great Videos sir. I have a question. People always talk about increasing power or torque in Z4. But can we reduce the power to increase the mileage? Is there any mod for that? Please let me know. Thank you🤓
@SimpleCarGuy
@SimpleCarGuy 4 года назад
You know, I've never looked into reducing power so I can't really help you there. I think if you get bootmod or jb4, there might be maps for fuel efficiency, but I'd check with the manufacturers.
@BeFitWithDev
@BeFitWithDev 4 года назад
@@SimpleCarGuy yes sir. Please let me know. And the reason for asking this question is, I am from India and there are not more room/roads for a 35i's 300 HP. There is no need. So why not limit the power so that you can hopefully get better economy.
@SimpleCarGuy
@SimpleCarGuy 4 года назад
@@BeFitWithDev Do you already have the car or just thinking ahead? I would then suggest getting an sdrive20i, those are much more economical.
@BeFitWithDev
@BeFitWithDev 4 года назад
@@SimpleCarGuy I am planning ahead. Will be buying in 2021. And in India, we only have 35i. No other variant. And it usually gives around 8kmpl.
@SimpleCarGuy
@SimpleCarGuy 4 года назад
@@BeFitWithDev here one I found: www.racechip.us/shop/bmw/z4-e89-2009-to-2018/35i-2979ccm-300hp-225kw-300lb-ft.html Looks like it has different maps, some for adding power and some for fuel economy. So you can install one of those and then choose if you want to burn some money on fuel or just cruise and save.

Does the E 89 have start stop function?
@SimpleCarGuy

Mine does, first generation start/stop.
@michaelbrooks9462
@michaelbrooks9462 Год назад
Nope I replace everything junk plastic part as they fail. Added meth injection and upgraded the oil cooler and cooler thermostat and oil cooler bypass valve. I loose a few mpg however the engine runs better and extended the life of the engine. And to prevent failure of connection points I use Dielectric grease in all my connections. Also it helps to use plastic and rubber conditioners like suspension parts. This prevents dry rot and failure. Not 100% but helps. I would recommend using Amsoil as the recommended oil bmw uses is trash. And I would recommend getting protool that’s on same level as the high end scanner. Just need a windows laptop.

Fluids and filters all need to be changed, especially the ATF. It’s not lifetime fill per ZF, only per BMW. Also, park your car in a garage if possible...people living in super hot climates park their cars outside in the 100 degree heat all day and then wonder why they have issues with electrical or plastic mechanicals.
@SimpleCarGuy
@SimpleCarGuy 3 года назад
Very good tips! Fluids and filters are much more important than people believe them to be. Garaging a car is not only great in hot climates but also great for those in cold climates.
