500-HP HONDA TURBO B16A-POST BIG BANG BUILD

FULL RESULTS, STOCK BLOCK, CRANK, HEADS, AND HEAD BOLTS. WE DID REPLACE THE BROKEN PISTONS AND RODS, UPGRADED THE CAMS, THEN ADDED A T66 TURBO TO TAKE THE HONDA B16A EVEN HIGHER IN POWER. AFTER THE MISTAKE IN (BIG BANG B16A) PART 1, WHERE I RAN A STOCK B16A UNDER BOOST TIL A PISTON BROKE (NO EXTRA RING GAP), I DECIDED TO UPGRADE THE COMBO WITH RODS, PISTONS AND CAMS. RETAINED THE STOCK BLOCK, CRANK, HEAD, HEAD BOLTS AND P30 INTAKE. THEN ADDED BOOST FROM AN INTERCOOLED T66 TURBO.

In our research with the old 2.2 dodge turbo 4 from the 80's, they would break piston ringlands between the 1st and 2nd ring down at the 175whp range because of a hotspot in the chamber. Those same seemingly fragile pistons would go on towards 400whp once the "glowplug" in the chamber was addressed.
@Parents_of_Twins

I know you wrote a book on the focus Zetec but I’d love to see a combination build up of the zx2 Zetec with vct on exhaust side. If you work the combustion chambers and unshroud the intake and exhaust and make a sord of swoop from the side of the chamber wall coming towards the divide between intake valves and then do the same on the other side and then blend the chamber walls into the unshrouded intake and exhaust then blend the sharp edged spark plug boss and port the intake and exhaust and deck the head 100 thousandths( which would still give you plenty of piston to valve clearance) then put in a custom intake cam with more duration and use a ported aluminum probe intake and long tube headers for the N/A test and then test with turbo with an optimized tune they can make a lot of power. But I love all motors I love when you say your not a ford or chevy or mopar guy your an engine guy and I feel the same way. Keep testin. Your videos are great!

Piston rings transfer heat from the piston to the cylinder walls. Butting rings gets to be a chicken or egg conversation. Are butted rings and broken ringlands caused by excessive piston temperature? We saw less piston issues in sbe hondas as we began using bigger exhaust housings and wheels.
@1magnit
@1magnit 3 года назад
Ring gap allows the end gasses to escape into the sump reducing any detonation effects. Looking at it from a slightly different point of view you can run any engine without coolant to the point where it gets so hot that the pistons seize in the bores, once it cools it runs again and the ringlands don't break so the ring gap theory has to be wrong.
@Dr_Xyzt
@Dr_Xyzt 3 года назад
The suggestion of piston heat having an effect is a different way of looking at the way heat is transferred in the engine. -- The rings have a complicated hard life though. They don't have much thermal mass, and they see convection from the lateral gas ports, so they get the heat immediately and don't have a whole lot of surface area to conduct heat into the bore, plus the contact is at high pressure. --Look at 2:35. The piston crown is intact, but the other ringlands broke. That's a valuable lesson in piston design. From a heat management standpoint, the crown has a lot of thermal mass that's able to go down into the skirts and wrist pin structure. If that wasn't enough, the ports from the oil rings promote oil convection. -- Piston cooling is complicated. I think about it a lot when I have to choose between a short compression height piston, or a standard one. Oil surface tension. Thermal mass. Skirt surface area.

The motor makes a lot of hp, but the torque suffers. I think that is the difference between say my 1.4L Cruze, which pumps out more torque at low RPM. I’m beginning to believe that not making massive amounts of torque on the low end is the key to blocks surviving. My Grand National makes a ton of torque on the low end and guess what, the block has been known to split. One guy with a 6766 turbo made 625/683 to the wheel and his block survived but for how long I don’t know. That’s probably over 700hp and close 800 ft-lbs of torque to the crank. The 109 blocks have made over a 1000 wheel hp and probably 950 ft-lbs of torque but with every modification possible to strengthen the block. My understanding is because the block is off center that cost quite a power my having the crank pin split weakens the the engine as a whole. Maybe I’ll get Richard to Big Bang a 109 block one of these days, with at minimum replacing the stock center main caps with billet still ones.

If back in the 80's you'd tell me that a 4-cylinder can make +500hp... I would've laughed at you.
