In today's episode, I review a remarkable 50mm f/0.95 lens for the Leica M mount produced by the Shenzen-based company TTArtisan, which was only founded in 2019. With this lens, TTArtisan obviously takes on the biggest and most established player in the room: Leica with its legendary 50mm Noctilux f/0.95 lens. While a Noctilux sets you back 12.000 Euro, this TTArtisan alternative comes in at around 700 Euro. But is it worth it?
I took the lens with me on a trip to Hong Kong to test it properly, shooting some street shots, landscapes, architecture and portraits of a friend on Ilford Delta 100 and Kodak ProImage 100.
Let’s take a closer look at this lens, its build quality, optical design and the results it produces.
More about the lens (please note the special price at the moment):

I really appreciate how dedicated you are to testing these lenses on film. You could quickly shoot these lenses digitally and have more videos, but we wouldn't be getting those analog insights... I would really like to compare the performance to the only moderately more expensive Voigtlander 50mm f/1.0. Great photography.

Thanks so much for your kind comment. And yes, you are right. A comparison to the Voigtländer would be interesting.

Your reviews are the best. Love the combination of photos and dialogue. The portrait shot of your friend was amazing in this session. Your reviews are so well done, I often watch them multiple times. Can’t wait to see your next video session. Cheers!

I saw another comparative review that featured this lens and the Laowa 45 mm 0.95 and the Laowa had better clarity... Well, it's not like i can go for the Laowa anyway because it's not compatible with my camera mount... But at least this ttartisan is...

This comparison is absurd. If other option is priced 15x more, then is not worthed only if Unicorns come straight out of Leica's behind and they can guess Lotto numbers. With modern lenses differences are only that, they are different. Otherwise, nice video like always and your lady friend is truly beautiful.

Thoughtful review, but am I the only one who noticed the two photos with the odd-shaped out-of-focus highlight? Ovals but pointed on opposite ends.

For all the 'budget Noctilux' positioning, the tests I've seen so far make it very questionable whether the extra $11k gets you any more sharpness wide open.

As usual, stunning photographic, aesthetic and compositive skills and soothing, informative, whispered text, always spot-on and without hyperbolic sentences and shrapnel of superlatives. Thanks for your insights, you changed my appreciation of this lens and I am not even an M-system user. I am considering seriously to adapt this lens just to see how it performs against my razor sharp Fujinon 56mm 1.2 .

Thanks so much. This is very kind of you. I feel like it is easier to produce good work in an environment that is new and unfamiliar. This always activates me in a different way photographically speaking.

I love this lens. How ever you are correct, it is heavy. I use it on my canon r6 body just to make it weigh less as opposed to using it on my m11.

The obvious questions: Brightin Star 50mm .95 VS TTArtisan 50mm .95, which is better? Which is more artistic? Which customer service is better? Which will render bigger sensors like the XT5 vs XT3

Thank you for this well done review. I completely agree with your conclusion: this lens is a beast but beautifully made, takes very nice photos, and is quite the bargain. That said I also took the plunge on the Brighten Star which is about half the cost and another beautifully made super fast 50 that takes beautiful photos, although the Brighten Star does not, or at least did not at the time I purchased mine, come in an M-mount.

Interesting lens but but too much for Leica M due to its size and weight. Far more pleasant to use with an SL ( or Panasonic s1) , Nikon Z or event Sony A with a macro focus adaptor.

The DJ Optical seems to be the actual manufacturer as both TTArtisan and 7Artisans (the lens designers) lenses both carry the DJ Optical engraving on the front. Much like both Zeiss and Voigtlander having their lenses manufactured by Cosina but without having the Cosina branding on the lens.

Appreciate your work!Although Shenzhen is just next to Hong Kong,I don't find much similarity between two cities. You'll strongly fell it when you go there,as it's a city that is purely built for making money. If you want to travel to China and move around in cities I recommend you to visit Chongqing or Tianjin, which have strong and unique cultural atmosphere.

Many thanks for your detailed, informative and fruithful review of this lens. One question that crosses everyone's mind is : What are the differences between the original Noctilux from Leica and this lens? Especially when one compares the tremendous difference between the price tags of the two lenses. Is noctilux worth it just because it is a Leica jewel? Regards

Some extra info on the versions: It also comes in black and a limited-edition red, and there are two versions of silver: gloss and matte. The titanium and red versions have a different barrel design compared to the black and silver versions, having a more tapered shape with a smaller filter size. I've checked out all the versions at a local shop. Apparently, there are no differences optically between all the versions, though with the constantly-evolving nature of companies like TTartisan, I wouldn't be surprised if different coatings or even different elements have been used.

Thanks! You helped me a lot. I am looking for a 50mm lens that I can afford. Since I prefer 35mm, it has to be a special lens. This TTArtisan sounded great, but when you told me about the size and weight, I think I have to settle for f2. A pity, because I loved your wide open shots.

The fact that you need to calibrate it yourself - just no. They should do that in factory and just charge 50 bucks more for it.

Again a wonderful video, its a joy to listen and watch. If you do not own a Leica M camera or an adaptor for Sony etc , there is another lens with an 0,95 aperture . It is the already mentioned Canon "dream lens" 50mm f 1:0,95 from 1961 for the Canon screw mount cameras, but fitted with a special bayonet mount (like the Canon mirror box 2). It was produced for the rangefinder cameras Canon 7, 7s and 7sZ for analogue film, today it is also usable with an adaptor for example on Canon RF mirrorless cameras (which is useful for better focusing, because that is critical with the old rangefinders, which sometimes need adjustment). The original rangefinder version was built between 1961 and 1971 with around 19.000 units. Between 1971 and 1984 another 7000 units where built as a TV version without rangefinder coupling. The image quality is as the name dream lens describes. Fully open it has a special look with sharp center but softness towards the edges. At f 5,6 and f 8 it delivers sharp pictures but not as good as a S 50/1.8 or S 50/1.4 lens . For daily use I would prefer these two lenses. Only if you like to use 50mm in dim light or at night or you want to use the extremely shallow depht of field at 0.95 it may be useful to carry the 600 grams lens. Some of the now between 50 and 60 years old lenses had spent years on the shelf, the ring for setting the distance might be a little bit stiff, and then the handling is not a pleasure. Some people love the Canon 0.95/50 mm , some people hate it. I do not use it very often (because there is so much light) , but I like the results. Perhaps you need an ND filter to use it wide open during daylight.
