Here it is, the legendary Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95 ASPH versus TTArtisan 50mm f/0.95 as well as the Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH. How do these lenses compare in sharpness, bokeh and rendering? Check it out! Let me know which lens you prefer in the comments, is the Noctilux fifteen times better than the TTArtisan?
Tested on a Sony a7rii, Leica M10, M2 and M3.

Would like to know how it holds up now! I had the 28mm F1.4 and two versions of the 50mm F1.1. And Both started to fall apart after some time. Starting from grinding in the gears because of dust that wondered in to the focus control wheel to loose control over the focus heliocoid inside, the screws wore off, after I had to fasten them over 2 years of usage because it got very loose and wobbly only 4 months after I bought it.

Great reviews Andrew as always. The time your putting creating these reviews and personal feedback is well appreciate it. As for the Noctilux, which is the one I would prefer adding.....well not really due to the price, but if I had to choose I would definitely go for the Leica. But being a street photographer shooter as you know... ergonomically and size weight it's more than a brick. Your lucky you got to play with both lens..... especially the NOCTI 🔴 Excellent vid brotha!!!

I love my pre 6 bit code brass and chrome Cron. It loves on my M10P. I tend to use the Chinese fast m lenses on the SL, but find the 59 Cron, 75 Summarit and 90 pre ASPH Cron are perfect on the rangefinder

Lovely, the 50 cron in chrome is such a desired lens. I agree however the longer lenses are a little trickier to focus but at least they’ve got the size advantage over these two behemoths.

Great comparison! Imho the Noctilux is outdated and overrated. Checkout for example the Sony 50mm 1.2 GM - yes, not f0.95, but damn close. In my opinion it's clearly a better lens and - drum roll - has autofocus. Something definitively very useful at apertures of f1.2 or faster.

Good, useful presentation. Thanks! I revisited it today, after some test shooting with my new Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.0 VM. In short, nothing has yet become a serious threat to my much-loved Summilux-M 50mm ASPH. The Nokton f/1.0 VM is a quite nice supplement/complement, occupying a “sweet spot,” in size, weight, and available aperture width. I have never handled a Noctilux f/0.95, but do not think that I would want to tote that much weight or bulk, on an M camera, and the TTartisan 50mm f/0.95 is even larger and heavier than the Noctilux. If I decide that I need a “more optically perfect” 50mm M-mount lens, the 50mm APO VM would be a leading contender, but I am not paid for my images, so there is no rush. (In the long term, curiosity about the 50mm APO VM will probably get the best of me, eventually, but even an APO would probably be a niche lens, unless I decide to start using 50mm for more landscapes, or perhaps product or forensic/evidentiary photography.)

It's always strange to me when people gasp so much about the 50/.95 Noctilux, cause I never liked the way it renders images and background elements. I think the 50/1.0 Noctilux is the actual gem in the Leica stable with more spherical aberration and much more interesting bokeh, and the 0.95 is just a flex.

It may be some issues with focus or lens construction itself, cause ttartisan has a lot more noticeable vignetting and while trees look more detailed, but the background has less details than on Noctilux, plus the corners can be much sharper on leica when stopped down, while TT keeps that soft frame, not much of a deal compared to price, especially at night when you'd use min aperture the most

Video @ 12:59 - Look at the edges of the out of focus bokeh. The Noctilux is 'lamp-shading' (sharp edges on round subject matter) ! - The TT-Art is amazing with its smoothness! Still, these specialized optics are mainly for LIGHT GATHERING duty, not an Everyday Carry lens. - Remember, you're paying for the cumbersome extra bulk & weight so you can have the light striking the front element to be THE SAME as the rear element ! - And yes, when you wish to blow your background into OBLIVION, these should be used...

Difficulty with any rangefinder camera with a large aperture lens like these is focusing accuracy. At f0.95 the plane of focus is tiny demanding the camera focusing system to have absolute accuracy between lens to camera's film plane. Higher contrast is not always better, there is a balanced between contrast to resolution to out of focus rendition to in-out of focus rendition and much more. These uber large aperture lenses that are the current Foto fashion are more novelty status lenses than truly useful creative image making tools. While there are images that demand and can greatly benefit from uber large aperture lenses, majority of images do not benefit from these uber large aperture lenses.
