Hi, Heat and plastic don't go together. It will leech in your shot and have bad health effects. Just do a little research on it, and you will see. So no plastic for me.
@ggivensjr
@ggivensjr 4 года назад
Check this out about the Rancilio Silvia "Do you really have to wait 45 minutes in the morning before you draw the first shot or is there a work-around? BEST ANSWER: Actually yes more wait time is welcome. The wait time is mainly due to the thermal mass of brass this machine has. The boiler and group head is made of brass, and they get up to temp in around 30 minutes, the extra 15 is to get the brass portafilter and basket up to temp as well. Why? to simply make use of the brass! Ask yourself why did they use brass, and why higher end machines use brass and top end use copper? why not Aluminum or stainless? Simply because brass retains heat more than other types of metal, and the best is copper (which most HX machines do use). which means when you pull a shot the temp of water running from boiler to grouphead to portafilter should remain consistent till it reaches the grounds and out of the portafilter. Temp stability is vital to ensure proper extraction, cause you might have water in the boiler at right temp but until it reaches the grounds, if not brass/copper temp might drop dramatically. Wait time is to make sure all the parts are at the same temperature and so water will hit grounds and come out at the correct temp which will make your espresso taste far better. " BTW, the portafilter has no plastic insert.

Thanks for this video! I removed the plastic disk from my portafilter and I think it's improved things for a number of reasons, not necessarily related to the quality of the espresso. I usually warm my machine up properly, so the benefit you suspect the disk provides was redundant on me anyway. It has had an unexpected improvement in a couple of other areas that used to frustrate me about this machine. 1. Always wondered why the weight of the grind would be be inconsistent, even though the grind setting is the same. It turns out the variable weight was not because of the grind volume, but because trapped water under the plastic disk was affecting the weight of the portafilter. Problem solved there! 2. After washing and drying my portafilter, when carrying it back to the machine it would almost always keep dripping water (typically on the floor) which it does no longer. Another problem solved! There is also the additional benefit of knowing my portafilter can be properly cleaned. When I removed the disk, there was a year worth of coffee scum build-up which must have been tainting the output somewhat.

Don't forget to clean the group head screen. Also, I have never had the plastic piece out of the Breville portafilter but I make sure to rinse my portafilter good with hot water and sometimes remove the spout to make sure to clean the threads. That said, I am going to buy a 54mm bottomless portafilter so I can make sure my shots aren't channeling. Thus the plastic bottom in the Breville portafilter will be one less variable to concern me.

Yes I think you're right. I'm going to relive it next time. I noticed a weight discrepancy I think. Maybe it was trapped water. I usually purge in between shots tho. Right now I'm wondering why I'm getting a 3 to 1. Like 16g coffee dose in and 50g dose out

@@JD-fx1np I gave up on the automatic water flow meter. It's very unreliable on my machine. Get yourself some of the Amazon cheapy scales and then you can control the water output precisely by stopping the flow when it's at the correct weight.

I think there is a very significant and important reason to remove it as well! Water and coffee can get trapped under the plastic disc!! That’s a major design flaw on Breville’s part. I just got my machine and was wondering what the point of the plastic was. I found this video immediately and decided to take it out. Found grossness already under it! Glad for your video 😃

From a manufacturing stand point, adding the black plastic disc in the Porta filter increases the cost, and assembly complexity so there must be a very good reason to have it there, and for so long. I would not remove it though. Breville would be first to remove the disc and save millions of dollars.

Yeah I just think 90% of the users don't even think of heating up the machine proberly. Without that plastic piece there would be a massive amount of complaints about cold espresso out of that machine. For us "enthusiast" users we can take it out and enjoy a full metal portafilter.
@pk4459
@pk4459 4 года назад
You are 100% correct Bic. Like Hoon said in the vido, if you don't warm up your machine having that disc there helps the cup temperature. In these domestic level machines, probably 90% of people do not have time for a 30min. warm up. It's there for a very good reason for the vast majority of consumers.

knipsi22 this is exactly was going to be my reply. Breville has officially said the plastic is for heat resistant (helps only those who don’t warm it up). Also, they said it’s to prevent splashing (but I think this only applies for pressurized baskets).

Hi Hoon, i took out the plastic piece in my portafilter a few days after I bought my Breville Barista express. I flush my portafilter after i heated up my machine and it still retain the heat. I think the plastic piece is just to assist with the flow during extraction. Just my thinking.
@ebsanu
@ebsanu 4 года назад
Yeah I was thinking that too. If you take out the basket and watch water go through the plastic hole you'll see it make a nice vortex. It's got walls around the hole that allow this. I think it's mostly to make the shot pull go on either side of the portafilter. That way it doesn't depend on your pull quality and you can expect to get the same amount on either side of the filter and split a double shot evenly between two shot glasses.

I don't know why it would be there for splashing? Bottomless portafilters don't use a plastic filter. I think it slows the flow of the pull for those who don't dose and tamp correctly. It's more a crutch than anything. How many coffee shops you see use a spout portafilter?

Don't take this as negative, but I feel like changing the tamp pressure negates any change the plastic may have made. When testing things it's best to only change one thing at a time so you know what is causing the difference

@@sjorlando7282 Thats what they say but when I use my Breville Barista Express (BE) and the 54mm I easily get a perfect pure honey pour. Not so with the 58mm in my Brevlile double boiler. I pack it tight, get the perfect pressure but half of the pour is black then comes the honey. The cheaper BE with the 54m gives me pure honey all the time. The 58mm seems to be a lot more stubborn and fussy and does not give the honey pour so easily.

I hate to say this, I think you are spreading irresponsible advice on removing the plastic temperature insulator as an option. The insulator was clearly explained in the user manual. If you haven't read it, I advice that you re-read it over and over again. Judging by the way you explain things, I know you are just a novice "barista" wanna be. As far as measuring the brewed coffee temperature, you could only measure it deep inside the portafilter or below the group head with a thermocouple not in different cups after a few seconds. Temperature of 140-150 degrees F is quite the norm and more comfortable to drink for most coffee drinkers. Also the espresso pressure should be as close as possible to 9 bars plus or minus 1-2 bars. Sorry to say it like it is.
