I took my 1969 Renault 10 to Performance Remap in Gloucester to see how much power it has.... Back in 1969 it would have been 49 bhp so what's the number 55 years later in 2024? Let's find out. #Cars #ClassicCars #Dyno
I've never had a mobile phone or a laptop where the battery lasts more than 3 years before it's seriously degraded, same with my power tool batteries which are all just the same cells that you get in an EV, yet the EVangelists are always claiming that some Tesla did 2 million miles on its original battery and only lost 3% of it's capacity blah blah yeah right 🤣🤣 The thing is, I spend my time watching car repair channels, funny how many 3-4 year old EV's I've seen where the garage is quoting £20-25k for a new battery (or $60k for those Hyundai Ioniq 5's that have been making the news)
Agreed, the road tax situation is farcical. I have a van and a car, I'm the only one who drives them, and it's close to £100 a month. Annual mileage well under 10k these days. Calculate the crazy costs of administering this tax at DVLA (SORN, car changes, reminders etc) and surely it's got to be better for everyone if the tax just goes on fuel prices. Stops the huge amount of road tax evasion at the same time, and catches the foreign registered cars/trucks.
It actually encourages you to drive more, knowing that your money in tax is going to waste otherwise. Fuel tax is by far the fairest way, but we pay enough on that already.
If the nutters in our govt is serious about ev's then they don't fuel up so fuel tax won't work and if rd tax is only for evs everybody will want diesel/petrol cars 😂😂😂😂😂
Not too shabby, love cars with that configuration, had an Imp for a short while and Skoda Estelle, great fun dragging a trailer tent to Combe Martin, overtaking all the 'posh cars' dragging 5 berth caravans. Got character, love deep dish steels with fat tyres. Where's your front spots gone? Weight reduction for more oomph? (Range Rover 11.3mpg, Government love the double tax it'll collect).👍😁🇬🇧
You crazy man Geoff, your tuner got a Range Rover, now we are getting close to getting that "Geoff Steals Cars" video that shows why they won't be insured anymore, which is scary in it's own right.
My first car was Renault 8, 1964 model I got in 1973, and had four none servo disc brakes from the factory in 1964, and Michelin x radial tyres, miles in front of Morris Minors and the like.
Not bad for an old girl. The little Renault needs to remain on the fleet. Your correct at the end regarding fuel in modern cars. To save a bit of money I decided to run my modern car on the E10 standard fuel, but realised after a few weeks I had terrible running, kangaroo-ing, occasional rough running and even stalling. Switched back to E5 super unleaded and it's running smoother and has less of the issues above.
With a full service and new filters, points and plugs, & a play with the advance settings etc, you might just gain that loss back again! Or change to an electronic ignition system. If you really want to do a full restoration on the engine then new valve springs and a re seating of the valves will make a difference as will a cleaning out of the ports!
I put my 1979 Moto Guzzi LeMans Mark 2 on the Dyno at a bike shop charity Dyno day. It has 1 5/8” straight through silencers on it. The entire bike shop emptied out of people, just to listen to it! A most average 50 Bhp at the rear wheel! 😂
@@timhicks2154 yeah, I had the Pirahna electronic ignition and K&N pod filters with Conti replica pipes and I replaced the front forks with 38mm Marzocchis
Get the air pump from a 225 CI Chrysler slant six. Put it along the front drive belt. Hook it up to the carb intake. Made a Canadian Renault Le Car a little stoplight drag racer.
Chrysler your as old as me. Them air pump got ripped off and thrown away, good luck finding one. It would be funny to see if it might jump 2 hp+. though. I want him to race a go cart on a track. Just a 5 hp China clone of a Honda. just to show why we don't need big cars with 500 hp. I love them and have them, but a 4-seater go cart with say 20hp is more than enough to do 140 kph. No blistering 0-60 but it could. This also would make for a good Ev Golf cart motor swap with a small Genni to charge it nonstop. A few batteries a inverter and off you go. Best days of my life were riding my minibike to school through the ditches on .10 cent a week in the 70's. Herer in Canada they wanted 1 dollar a week and my single mother saved money letting me get that Artic cat leopard skin seat and burnt orange glitter paint 5 hp bike for my savings cutting lawns. Best 20 bucks I ever spent
The Renault is only 8 : 1 compressing I believe. Your engine will probably run better with regular fuel. High octane is just a rating for resistance to knocking / pinging. Regular fuel actually has a higher BTU content than high octane. A couple of guys I worked with were always tinkering with their engines and found out that they could do many mods to their engines for more power but using high octane didn't help at all unless this changed compression, I.E. new piston and head work. Keep up the good fun! Always fun to drive a slow car fast as they say.
That was a great result only loosing 10 Horses over 50 year. I wonder what my 1994 Mitsubishi Pajero would show, still goes well, and I run it on Shell Super Diesel, and regular service.
It's a beast Geoff. BTW, I like it better without the front fog lights. I would love to have that little Renault here in the U.S. However, I don't think the wife would be happy with me buying another car. With 4 of my own plus hers, I'm out of parking space.
So great to see you are back my phone didn’t tell me you were back and I have all the notifications on. Love the old car my Valiant is 60 next year. Seen Lee in Australia and he had a drive in a real car a Valiant. It had no air conditioner though so it was too hot for the baby 😂
@@GeoffBuysCars yes for the last 5 videos no notifications and only stumbled onto your video today In the Renault I’ve checked I’m still subscribed and have notifications set. Hope you enjoyed your time away. Stop worrying about your videos we just like you, a guy we’d love to have as a mate to chat with at the pub or at a barbie.
Just coming along M5 from Bromsgrove to Worcester this morning and over head warning signs saying “No EV charging at next services” even if you don’t like EVs that’s still got to be so annoying if you need to charge your car 🤦♂️
going along one day in a DAF 55 about 50 years back with four of us in it down a hill flat out at 65mph the driver wound the window down and the roof crumpled in on our heads, the metal is so thin the negative pressures in the car vacuumed the roof down, he rolled window up and roof went back to shape, no dents or creases, really funny little cars,
We had a 1968 in the late seventies. It was good thing the speed limit was 55 MPH. It blew a piston and was retired. It's the only engine I've seen where you can compress the valve springs by hand, and pull the keepers out.
Great result. Probably try E5 and check the timing. 'In the day' I found a decoke and a new set of valve springs, HT leads, plugs, points and air filter transformed an old OHV lump like the A series which looks simular to the engine in the Renault. Please get it rustproofed now it's in damp , soggy UK.
I had a standard Renault 10 major....(not new) definitely used.....well used, but that car got me all over what was West Germany in the days of the Deutschmark and even drove back and forth to UK a couple of times. The tyres on mine were those skinny Michelins...those fat tyres must take 30% of your HP.
Talking about car theft, the I Do Cars chap bought a X5 no keys and the car locked, showed you how to open it and then reprogramme new keys for it. Might be interesting to do a RU-vid search, it was while you were on holiday.
Geoff, check out the classics available in Portugal. There is literally no rust as roads not salted. Old Toyotas, Datsuns - cars here don't rot but get killed by poor mechanics...old Fords available but rare. Best to you!
I had a 64 R10 and a 66R11 ,great cars ,economicl and the one thing English cars did not have .Comfortable reclining seats so it was much easier to get a bit of action with the ladies.
There’s a lot of ways to regain lost power. New spark plugs, fuel filter, oil filter, air filter, an oil change, fuel additive to clean out any gunk in the tank - basically keep the engine maintained and serviced consistently, it’ll retain its power output and last longer
With your phone bill, we had issues where you would set up a direct debt, then make a one of payment and in backend somewhere in the magic billing system the one off payment would cancel the direct debt.....
It's beautiful (the Renault). I could do all the work on that myself. No smog crap just lovely engine. If you are of a certain age, you should be able to feel the 'reds'. 😂 40hp fantastic for original engine not runing on leaded fuel. My 1965 Chevy never ran as good when they stopped selling leaded fuel. But it was still better than anything you could buy now. Also had a '56 Ford V8 pickup that was a dream to drive and work on.
What's happened to the water cooling system expansion bottle? Miine had a flat floor with rubber mats, just sloshed some water in and job done. The French are not afraid to go their own way engineering wise. Remember the gear stick on the dash? (R8?)
So cool... your little French SA import still has a bit of pizazz... up the BOKKE!! 😁😁 Ja... must have been all that sunshine wine they fed the lil darling down there!!
55 Years ago, life was much less complicated. People spent their energy on the quality of family life instead of keeping up with the Jones, just to please others.
started with 49. petrol is 5% alcohol but oil is better. its had a rebuild for sure so block, head and carb are hanbuilt which COUNTS. 51 at the flywheel.
I wonder in the future how many owners will be taking there 55 year old EV to be dynoed? And still have the same pro rata power left from their original battery and motor setup🔋 🤔😲😳😁
11.3......Nothing wrong with that. That's about what I get in my Ram 2500 6.7 Turbodiesel. But I'm towing a 12K pound 5th wheel (I think it's a called a caravan over there).
Does the Range Rover come with a Greta fitted in the back seat? Nice but try parking it in Tower Car Park in York. Cars are getting bigger. Saw an old mini the other day my first car and it looked like a toy compared to the modern ones around.
Plz don’t sell the little Renault after my kids and wife my 60 year old Valiant is the love of my life. The missus knows I’m not out partying at the pub or eating money as everything goes into my baby. I love it.
