Beating the ULEZ with a 1969 Renault 10. PART 1. What could go wrong?

Geoff goes way off script and buys a 1969 Renault 10. First we collect the car, have a nerve racking drive home, then we break down, get rescued and finally have a good look at the car before making a plan for it. It's a bit of an epic Geoffumentary. #ClassicCars #Cars #ULEZ

Geoff, that takes me back to my early driving days with a Renault 8 and then two Renault 10s. Ok, we had the weedy 1100 engines but loved them. I was “given” the 8 which was actually a scrapper, £25 and £40 for the 10s. I bought one for spares and it was better than the car we were doing up (ie cobbling back together). Happy days despite the dreadful build quality, the rampant rust and very dubious handling. Several years of happy(ish) motoring. Fully biodegradable too.

@@petersaupe7455 Not surprised in the slightest. I chose Skodas as budget East European cars worth buying because my research indicated that they were amongst the best reliable automobile technology to come out of the Eastern Bloc - and that was back in the 80’s. I was also aware some of the best military hardware was built by Skoda!!! The Russians were suitably embarrassed by Skoda’s automobile success that they never imported any Skodas into Russia for sale, even though they had a deficit of new cars for sale in the former USSR and a 10 year or more wait in a queue to get one back then. My rear engined Skodas were built like TANKS and were tough as nails. I loved the 70’s style engineering technology but it was tried, tested, proven and reliable. I enjoyed every single one I had. 1. Skoda Super Estelle 120 LSE (1983) (Codename: FOXBAT). 2. Skoda Estelle 120 LSE (later upgraded to a Rapid 130G engine) (1984) (Codename: VOYAGER). 3. Skoda Rapid 130G (1987) (Codename: Cappuccino) 4. Skoda Rapid 130G (1987) (Codename: Thunderstorm) Cappuccino was written off in an accident (not my fault) so it’s engine was transferred into Voyager. Having a 1289cc engine in that A Reg Estelle made a surprising difference! My wife drove it like a rally car 😂 - it had a colour coded Whale Tail Spoiler on it and chrome trim inserts on all the windows - also a vinyl roof. I do still miss them all.

The biggest problem with this model was that the tyres fired wet mud into the wings and they had big rust holes in them, long before they were three years old. I loved you getting worked up about the temperature gauge, this is why when going french classic, I feel air-cooled is much safer! I should say my '74 Citroën Ami8 cruises beautifully at m'way speeds and will do a bit more if needed! Looks like you had some sort of alternator/charging issue! Hence started off running sweet and gradually running became worse as voltage dropped maybe? Re the brakes - I once drove a Renault Estafette van, which had brakes that seized on and then eventually freed off but meant a lot of stop start driving! Still, looks like an absolute cracking eBay venture! Looking forward to more updates!

I had the predecessor, the Renault R8 Gordini which is now a cult item in France. It was French racing blue with double white stripe over the bonnet, roof, and trunk. They can overheat in modern driving conditions so you need to keep the engine cooling system, rad and cooling ducts in perfect condition. One of my work mates bought a used Renault 10 back in the early 1970's. The car had an automatic gearbox with a push - button selector on the dashboard. Very unusual and I had only ever seen this on high - end cars like Bristols or Iso Grifos. My mate decided to "hot" it up and bought a Nikkei/Nikki (?) carburettor kit. Problem was that the original carburettor had an automatic choke system and the new carb. had a manual choke. So a long/extended choke cable was required for the upgraded carb. which had been "forgotten". As you can imagine, cold starting was a bit of a pig because he had to find a "volunteer" to stand behind the car and hold the manual choke open until the engine had warmed a bit! Needless to say my work mate swapped it out within a few months for a Ford Corsair with a column style gearshift. He just kept buying what he thought were "good deals"!

This is grand stuff, l have a 50 year old Austin van den plas princess, you always check the dipstick next trip, then smiles all the way which a modern car doesn’t happen 🙂

One of the beauties of classic cars is that they are so basic and easy to fix that you'll never experience the frustration or anger of playing "parts darts" at multiple garages to temporarily get it out of limp mode.

I do the same with a Triumph 2500. Petrol and addative. Ooh and possibly a carton of expanding foam for the odd camera. Fantastic.😂

Geoff, the glass bottle is the expansion tank. Beware, they can explode. One of ours did.

I've had two Renault 10s. One I drove 2,500 miles from Melbourne to Perth in under four days in 1989. It didn't miss a beat, and I was very comfortable on it's superb seats. The "Crap" brakes are because it has four wheel unservo'd discs which need a hard press on the pedal, but definitely pull you up quickly. The big bottle in the front is a coolant expansion tank. IIRC the starter motor is under the manifold so does get hot. It should have a heat shield over it but again IIRC they're pigs of things to fit so it's a lot easier to put the starter motor on without it. I'd be curious to know what you paid for it.

A R10 with a 1300 engine! UK models were 1108cc, so I guess yours being a South African import makes it different - and better! Bet its a nightmare in crosswinds!
