No, the very innovative display in the middle is NOT outdated. It is absolutely sufficient and just an addition to the digital display in the cockpit. Why do I need more when there is even MMI touch at the bottom of the center console? And why a pop-up display, you ask seriously? Simply because it is a nice option to be able to retract this display at the push of a button when not in use and to have a clean look in the console. But you think it's nicer when this little thing sticks out of the console constantly, okay... But what you probably love most are the current versions, where an Apple iPad was simply installed somewhere in the middle and where every little action has to be done via distracting touch instead of having REAL physical buttons that don't distract you from driving and at the same time look more classy and sophisticated of course.
