Had the stabilizer control valve blow a spool almost completely out, far enough that it was raining oil at the back of the machine, I managed to get the stabilizer leg up far enough to get out of where we were working and to a spot to work on it. I decided to replace rather than repair the valve, I reasoned that even repaired the main components were still over 30 years old, I located a new one for an outstanding price from FP Smith www.fpsmitheq.com/. The orbital hydraulic steering valve has been leaking as long as we have had the machine and it would if you ran the machine long enough it would fill the steering column with oil and it would in turn leak out on to your lap.I located and bought a new steering valve with a new steering column from www.flinthyd.com/ for half the price Case or just about anyone else wanted new and the same as a used one. The brakes had a problem since we owned the 580, someone had put brake fluid in the system instead of TCH or Dexron ATF, needless to say it killed the rubber parts. To fix the brakes I bought a pair of Hyster fork truck master cylinders off of Ebay as well as a pair of new brake slave cylinders from www.reliableaft..., the brakes will now use brake fluid and the parts cost less than one new original Case master cylinder. The parking brake has been non operational as long as we've had it, I freed the lever assembly and bought a new top quality U.S. made cable from www.brokentrac... for about half of what a new one from Case would cost.
All together with 5 new hoses for the steering valve the price of all the new parts with shipping was about $1350, not bad at all.

I'll do my best to answer your question Bill. I'm leaning toward the master cylinder(s) being the culprit. If you unlock the pedals is it doing it only on one side? If so I would change the master cylinder on that side, the reason is if you are opening the bleeder to free the brake there is pressure being kept in the system, the only reason would be the fluid cannot return. Unless the slave leaks not much goes wrong with them.

Hi MerlinxPV. I've been looking for hours to find out if there's anyone that has had to hook up the brake self adjuster spring. It's got a rod inside of it and you have to stretch the spring past the length of the rod to get it on the peg. It seems impossible with the brake lever in place. You are the only one I can find that's done it. How?????? Is there a video?

When I use Brakes they both Lock down, when I bleed they both Free up, Both my Master cylinders checked out as Good, I was told the SLAVE Unit Straight down under the Seat was my Problem, Letting Air get in Does this sound like a Good Diagnossis, and where is the Best Place to Buy the Slave unit, at Reliable After Market ???

My 70's 580 Super E had a sudden massive hydr leak just behind the front counterweights, gallons pouring out from an unknown location (can't see as hidden up behind all at front of engine and rad). Hoping its not the main seals on the pump. Machine still starts and runs but up on front loader has complete power loss. Will fill reserve tank and see if i have down pressure and better try to isolate source of hydr fluid spray. Any suggestions or recommendations? Piss poor mechanic, just getting off a long term illness and this machine is my right hand for snow and firewood work. Checked fittings for rams and don't appear to be cracked or leaking there. Thanx, video very imformative, sure i'm not the first trying to fix this problem and any suggestions appreciated!

+Jon Burton Hi Jon, it sounds like a broken hydraulic hose, you will need to remove the grill and clean out where the flexible lines connect to the pump and hard lines on the chassis.

Great video.. I just recently started working on a 580D myself. It seems to be leaking out the bottom of the steering column, but above the floor plate. There's also no brakes at all on the right side of the backhoe. Any idea what that may be? I'm thinking maybe a steering column seal if there is one, and a master cylinder? Also was wondering if you needed to take off the rear tires to do that breake work?

Hi mbtx1055, I'll do my best to steer you in the right direction. If you have a leak near the bottom of the steering column and lost your RH brake it is most likely the brake line behind the small plate has rotted out like mine. Perhaps if you take a look at my other 580 brake video it will give you a better idea what I'm referring to. You do not have to remove your wheels to service the brakes, you may find it a bit easier though to access them by removing the floor pans,seat can be a PIA

Hi, great video thanks. I am replacing a failed hose linking the backhoe arms. I cant find info on how much oil i need to put back into the system. There is a dip stick on the filler cap close to the fuel cap and there is a dip stick to the right side of the engine (I think its right side) and I am not sure I have enough oil in there or how much I should plan for to fill up now. Can I cause damage by over-filling? Do I need to pressurize the system when I install new pipe or will that just happen naturally?
@Peter-V_00
@Peter-V_00 6 лет назад
Hi Rowea1, I hope this link helps, I can tell you if your oil level is "off the stick" you can put 5 gallons of oil in pretty safely, overfilling a little really doesn't cause a problem but drastic overfilling will cause the system to to try to push out the excess oil as it warms up. Your question about replacing the line and purging, there is no need to purge the system, put the new part on and run the cylinder through it's stroke a few times and you are fine, I would suggest checking the hydraulic oil afterward. www.tractordata.com/industrial-tractors/000/1/0/105-ji-case-580d.html

It can be any number of things, lets start by establishing just which machine you have, does it use a clutch or shuttle shift?

I added the links for the master cylinder as well as the slave cylinder to the description text, keep in mind when you swap these they need to be done as a set per side (master/slave) and use brake fluid not ATF or TCH like the originals.

Hey Merlinx, I have the steering oil leaking the same as you. At the moment all I do is use it in a field on my own property and no need to use it on the road... so I put up with it. However today my gear lever fell apart from the housing and I cant find any assembly diagrams in the manual on it... how strange that is huh? Its stuck in top gear and I cant change it lol. I am about to remove the floor plate (as is in your video) but am wondering if I really need to do that. maybe there is an easier way of refitting this gear leaver? Me no very familiar with such things, but willing to learn. Thanks mate... Mike

+Mikey Strikey Hi Mikey, I'll do my best to answer your question. There is really no way to gain access to the top cover of the transaxle to service the shift lever without pulling the floor pan, it's not too bad of a job but do look it over well to make sure you locate all the bolts you need to remove, I'll warn you,the seat assembly is heavy and awkward to handle. You may get a better idea what you're up against by going to "Colemanequip . com, lookup 580D, go to the "transaxle and differential lock" illustration #182 and "TRANSAXLE SHIFTER MECHANISM, WITHOUT TURBOCHARGER" illustration #204, I think these will show you what you're looking for. By the way, I have used Coleman Equipment to buy parts from, they are good to deal with but sometimes a bit pricey on some parts. I hope this helps you out. Cheers.

Hi John, I replaced both master cylinders and slave cylinders that use conventional brake fluid, Case uses TCH with the original parts.

Can anyone tell me where the fuel pump relay is located on a 580D? I have to use a jumper wire from the fuel pump to the alternator to run the hoe.
@Peter-V_00
@Peter-V_00 8 лет назад
+Jim Gleason All of the electric relays are under the black fiberglass cover that holds the instruments, remove the 4 screws that hold the instrument cluster, unplug the the ribbon cable and tach cable then set the cluster aside, remove the bolts on the bottom of each side and lift off the cover, you may have to flex it a little to remove it.

Did you say you aren't supposed to use brake fluid?
@Peter-V_00
@Peter-V_00 7 лет назад
In the original configuration as built by Case TCH hydraulic oil is the what is used in the brake system, however, I purchased commonly used fork truck brake slave cylinders as well as master cylinders due to them costing a fraction of what genuine "Case" parts cost. Due to the type of elastomers used in the fork truck components the system now uses common DOT3 brake fluid instead of TCH hydraulic oil as specified for the brake system by Case.

hi,,merlinx what cause of backhoe cannot power if loaded of sand?
@Peter-V_00
@Peter-V_00 8 лет назад
+mario eric ga Are you asking why it will not lift the bucket with sand in it? If this is the case the loader bucket control linkage or control valve pressure relief may be the problem if all of you other hydraulic systems work okay, if any of your other hydraulic systems are also having a problem then it could be your hydraulic pump, you would need to fit a gauge to a test port to check output. If your engine seems to lack power the first two thing to check are the air filter and fuel filters, keep in mind these days the diesel fuel seems to be very good at plugging up filters sooner than days gone by. I hope this helps you solve your problem. MerlinxPV why boom comes down by itself from the raise position
@Peter-V_00
@Peter-V_00 7 лет назад
Most likely the hydraulic cylinders are leaking internally, this is the most common reason, the piston rings are worn out, items #14-15 in this schematic. Aftermarket rebuild kits are much less expensive and work well, there is no need to remove the entire cylinder, remove the rod and gland to replace worn parts. www.colemanequip.com/Case-580D-Loader-Backhoes-Parts/Hydraulics-4i/G105400-AND-G106168-BACKHOE-BOOM-CYLINDERS-0Yha/?#partdiagrams
