Great job. Thank you for showing us what we are going to be in for. I love how you ground the screw driver to make it a custom spring tool. I would love to see you do a lot more repaire videos on the old Case Backhoes.

There's going to be a lot more to come on this one. For sure all the hydraulic lines.

Thanks, just finished the job on the driver's side of 530 hoe/loader, no fun, that cover, but this appears to be the easy side. I don't know how I'm going to make out with the passenger side yet. My machine has the small cab, not much room, and the bucket controls and large hoses keep a guy from even getting in through the passenger side. Anyway, thank's for taking the time to shoot and post the video. Cheers from Nova Scotia . 1965 case 530 contruction king hoe/loader.

You beat me to this repair! I've got to make some time to get back at the 580 over here. Glad you found a manual, they are handy to have. Mine came with 2 mouldy ones...when I open the pages it stinks like mould, so I usually read them outdoors. They say that the brakes on these things were never designed well right from the factory. Keep up the good work!

Vinegar will kill the mold but I don't know about the smell...If you stood for a few days riffling them in the sun, maybe...? Better than no manual though and at least you're not worried about some grease prints on them right? I got mine from Amazon. They're a re-print of older ones. One repair manual, parts catalog for the loader and backhoe, another parts catalog for the tractor itself, operators manual for the tractor, operators manual for the loader and backhoe. I think it was $130-ish U.S.D. If you've got a lathe in sight and it's pretty much operable, you might really consider it. I didn't show it, but on the drum I thought to chuck up my pin punch, stick a rivet in the hole, and run the center into the tail of the rivet, using the lathe just the same as that rivet tool they sell. On the tubular rivets it starts the flare perfectly. Also for making the bushing inserts on the frame. The brake bands are a different manufacturer. The holes aren't quite on and you don't want to get too crazy setting the rivets. I have my doubts about the bands but we'll see how it goes. I've also read that these brakes are more of a polite suggestion to "Please slow down a bit, maybe, if you could.". Before this job though, I had nothing on the right side, and the left would just lock up. Look for a lathe. Mine has a 5" swing. If you can find one with the 3 and 4 jaw chuck, that'd be pretty nice. I don't know how I'd even live without mine.

I have one of these machines I'm using daily and my uncle has one too. His advice was to always warm the brakes up first before using the machine when you'll need them. I use the stabilizers to lift the tires and get them freed up pretty good before I go up hills. Still though, I've almost shit myself coming down steep hills when one brake grabs and swings the whole machine sideways. Thanks for the video man!

My right side brake is a little grabby. Might be oil leaking on to the shoes. My steering is odd as well. Hard to describe but it's not right. I was working it for a guy up the hill for a bit and his property is nothing but sidehill. There were a couple times where I thought I was going over. I finished what I said I'd finish, he paid me well. That's good enough. Anymore this is just for my own stumps and holes.

@@heliarche The splines of the steering arms and the spindles of my machine are very sloppy . I drilled and tapped a hole in my left steering arm and used a bolt to tighten the slop out . It works great and they were shot before. I need to do the other side too. The more I use this machine, the more it impresses me. These old turds truly represent and exemplify a moment in time when manufacturers had enough pride and customer appreciation to actually build shit that lasts.

@@shitindawoodsbear2798 Mechanically speaking, my steering is nice. The hydraulic end of it though, it's not great. The steer cylinders are freshly repacked but I've still got bypass somewhere and it's not consistent either. I might go after the steering valve next and see if it can be cleaned up and rebuilt. For what I do though, it works. You have to keep in mind that the steering is odd...

One has to have a manual, I worked on machines for thirty years before I started to get manuals and it makes projects go so much easier. With all the skills you have, the spare parts and machines I am willing to bet you can make an adjustable camera mount using a clamp and or a magnet with a place for a light. I have seen two creators who use I V poles that are on wheels with large clamps welded to the pole, no cameraman needed plus a stable video, good lighting and good sound, what could go wrong! LOL

Everything I get, first thing for it is a manual. I have them for everything. I have a shelf full. Many of them are from vehicles long gone. Be wary of Haynes manuals. They're 99% right but that 1% will bite you. This job, a camera would have been nothing but in the way, or I'd have been blocking the shot most of the time. I was hoping just to get the basics across. I guess it's high time for something though. I'll play with some hard drive magnets and see if I can come up with a better setup for the other side. I've never been much for the camera or editing.

I just removed my housing today, to replace my pads and shoes. I was oh most freaking out, thinking that my loader frame, would not allow me the clearance to get them off. But somehow I found that extra 1/16" to get them off. I swear Case made that tight fit, just to scare people. Because the thought of having to unbolt that heavy ass thing, was very horrifying. Lol

It's been a little while since I did this but I remember I had to have it just right and swing it just so in order to get it out around the brake drum and all that. It took me a while to find just the right position.
