I have a John Deere G100. 26 years old and still going strong. It’s been a great mower

Really learning a lot from you Josh, well done! My 580 isn't even here yet but being OCD as I am, I'll plan out all my procedures well ahead! I subscribed after watching the first video about the maintenance kit. You had me when I didn't here any juvenile profanity and "filler" that some videos contain....we notice stuff like that; even in these "enlightened" times!👍

I had to build my sleeve hitch up for my x570 I have tested it now to a little over 400 lbs and Iv even lifted the front of the tractor by trying to pick up to much… I have a few videos showing it…. Congratulations on 580 keep them coming. I need a 1025r for the stuff I do but the 570 gets it done

I bought a 584 a few years ago after having a zero turn for a few years. I had a Ferris which was a good machine but on my property the zero turn broke traction at times + left tire skids around trees on my side hill yard in front of my house. Also my lower property gets soft and sometimes swampy due to a small stream that flows through my property. Zero turn would leave tear up marks or get stuck when things got wet. So the 584 was a good choice for me. It turns sharp enough around obstacles and has great traction to go through wet spots,yet only has the turf tires. But I do agree with you that the 580 & 590 models could have something more for rear hitch lifting or a plug-in hydraulic system.

My point to my rant is that the 580 is a premium mower. It's light weight on purpose for what it's designed for, mowing.

I used to be a JD service manager in Ohio. The 700 series is a serious garden tractor and has a lot of versatility. The 500 series is a better mowing machine. It's not a "beefed up x350". The 350 isn't close to being the machine that a 500 is. Many, schools cemeteries and municipal departments use the 500 series as their primary mowers and have great results with them.

I had a simplicity broadmoor and nothing but trouble, in fact had new transaxle put in under warranty and it took almost 7 months to get that. I picked it up and trailered it to a John Deere dealer here in Pa and traded it on a 580. JD gave me 3 grand for it. Paid about 5300.00 for it 3 years earlier. Haven't been able to cut grass with the 580 yet as I got a plow with it and it plowed great this winter. Now I have to figure out how to get the plow off and put the deck on for summer. I also have an E100 for camp and a 99 335 which I used last year when the 2 year old Simplicity sat at the dealer all summer. That 335 is tough. Going to put a new hood on it and use it as backup.

Being fair from a 500 series to a 700 series you're stepping up quite a bit especially in price so depending on what you buy the 500 series for what you want it to do I think the 500 series is an excellent machine you only got a acre or two for a garden 500 series would be the way to go anything more than 2 Acres you need a much bigger machine which would be your entry level machines

Josh, first off… that 738 is a sweet tractor. I owned an x540 which I loved. But was going to upgrade. I bought the 1025r for all of my tractor needs. I then bought an x394 which is a sweet mower if you only need to mow… that made the x540 obsolete. But I love it, so kept it too… I’m a JD guy… so yes, I have 3! curious, why did you buy the x738 over a compact 1023 or 1025? The price is almost the same on a 1023 with loader…
@JoshsGreenGarage
@JoshsGreenGarage Месяц назад
Well this is a 758, but same tractor just diesel. I went this route because I am military, and having to move with a 1025 or 1023 would make for a lot less room in my enclosed trailer. When you look at the specs of the two, you get more power with the 758 over the 1023, and I think about the same on a 1025, wheel sizes are the same, etc… but I just didn’t want the extra height, heavier weight of everything (found out the hard way during my recent move that the tractor, box blade, ripper, mower deck, all weights, plus all my crap was already too much for my trailer). Biggest reason is simply mowing. The 758 is a lawn Lamborghini, a mowing Maserati, a cutting Cadillac… most people say 1025/1023s aren’t the greatest for mowing. Also the 758 can use an actual 3 point, so you can use legitimate rear implements, and use of a box blade was a plus for me. Lastly it came down to the fact that I just like the garden tractors. Having the biggest lawnmower out there (don’t quote me on that, I know commercial zero turns and some other things are bigger) is pretty cool, I’d rather have that than the smallest compact tractor. I just feel like stepping into tractor tractor would leave me wanting more, at least into the 3 series. In the end it just came down to preference.

you can add wheel weights, I did. However, don't trust the part number of studs from the dealer. you are better off and cheaper making a set yourself. They are way overpriced and too short for the 570/580/590... unless my dealer gave me the wrong ones... but i like my setup more anyway.

Something you didn’t mention about the Cub Cadet is the $6099 is for the tractor only. Deck is sold separately. I was looking to possibly buy one but after seeing that it was a no brainer to buy they X580. Not to mention that the power steering and deck lift are electric on the GSX.

I just got the x580, and while I love the power steering, the seat sucks! Adjusting the springs doesn’t help…the 2 spring/pivot point design is awful. Currently hunting the upgraded seat that comes on the X700 series but backordered everywhere. Have you also noticed the x580 has a weird habit of throwing grass clippings out the bottom of the deck and off the back of the front tires and onto your legs? My X300 didn’t do that. I understand changing the seat involves removing the upper rear fender mounting surface…are you familiar with the procedure? A video on that would help…or any video on changing a seat. I upgraded my seat on my x300, but that was like 8 years ago…lol. I forget what I did. I put an aftermarket seat on and it was fantastic, but the modifications I did were horrific. Lots of drilling and cutting. Anyway….Great videos!😀
@JoshsGreenGarage
@JoshsGreenGarage 2 года назад
Well I don’t recall any grass getting on my legs from it… but I also cut really low, so maybe that is a thing if you cut higher? As for the seat, I don’t have the machine now, so can’t do anything more with it. Coulda swore though that the mounting bracket bolts on from the top, but I could be wrong… I can suggest though maybe finding one salvage, or there are many Facebook pages for JD garden tractors, and someone may have one they would sell. Sorry I’m not much help…

@@JoshsGreenGarage Thanks for the reply. No problem…I also like to cut low…keeps the ticks in the woods and off my lawn. But after a full week of rain I had a jungle to cut. New tractor got a real trial by fire! I had the deck set at just over 3” and clippings were flying out the front, kicking off the tire and all over me. But is was a dry day. But anyway…how much better is the 700 series seat? I hear it’s a massive improvement over the stock 580 seat.
@JoshsGreenGarage
@JoshsGreenGarage 2 года назад
Yeah the 5&7 series move a lot of air, so even if it is just a little windy, and a dry day, that deck will pick up everything and then maybe wind blowing it all over you? I run into that issue, AK is very dry at times. As for the 700 seat, definitely better. I love it so much more than the 580 seat. The 580 was good, but I feel like since you can’t adjust the back, the full height doesn’t get used. With the 700, I feel like the whole seat is used, and the suspension is way better. I didn’t mind the 580s suspension, but I could definitely tell a difference when I got the 7. Check out the channel “98Murray”, he has a 590 with the 700 seat. He may be able to give you a lot more info on it and the switch.

@@JoshsGreenGarage Thanks! BTW: I spray the tractor and deck with Meguiars Quick Wax. It’s a quick spray and wipe wax. Grass doesn’t stick to it and it will look new years from now. You know how it is when you get something new…try to keep it looking that way.

I mow a little over 2 acres and mow 7 months out of the year. Would you consider buying a used one for use just as a mower? I'm lookin at one at my dealer that looks and runs great,but it's at 500 hours. Hes asking $3900 for it. I've got one decent hill behind my place to mow,but it's not aweful, maybe 10-12 degree slope. The diff lock,serviceable tranny,and fs series Kawasaki are good selling points even with 500 hours on them.
@JoshsGreenGarage
@JoshsGreenGarage Год назад
Is it a 580 you are talking about? Seems like a good deal. I would definitely get it even just to mow. These tractors are ones that will last. The hours aren’t bad, just make sure to keep good oil in it, a clean filter, good plugs, and it will keep running and running. Of course, always try to talk them down a little, or maybe throw in an accessory or two

Hey Josh, I’m considering an upgrade from my X580 to an X7 series. Weighing out gas vs diesel. Diesel is of course cool. Strange question but how do you find the smoke on start up on the X758? I have to keep it in an attached garage and while I like the smell of diesel I’m not sure everyone in my house would.. if it would smoke and smell up the garage and mud room every time I use it I’d likely have to go gas. Any observations you’ve had on that ?
@JoshsGreenGarage
@JoshsGreenGarage Год назад
The only smoke I ever see is just a puff on startup. It doesn’t have a typical “diesel” smell like you would expect. Honestly I feel the gas models smell stronger than diesels if left running inside for any amount of time. I don’t think the diesel would be a problem for you
@jaybert6863
@jaybert6863 Год назад
Sounds good, I agree the X580 does smell quite strong if let run in the garage unless I start it and kick it right out side to warm up immediately. If the diesel is no worse that’s fine. Do you run a block heater ?
@JoshsGreenGarage
@JoshsGreenGarage Год назад
Nope, mine stays inside… honestly I wouldn’t mess with a block heater, wouldn’t want to mess with a freeze plug (pretty sure that’s how the Deere one is…), if it were going to be cold started, you would be better off running 0-40 or 5-40 oil… think Deere makes a 0-40 though, and add a oil pan heater pad from Napa. Way cheaper, and less intrusive. As long as the coolant is the proper mix, it won’t be an issue… 50/50 is good til -34 as it is

I have a friend who has an x580. His machine keeps pushing forward when he turns his wheels left or right It will not turn. Any answers?
@JoshsGreenGarage
@JoshsGreenGarage Год назад
Is he using a ground engaging implement? If using a flow or blade, it is so much drag that it keeps the front wheels from being effective. Front weights can help, but it doesn’t have front wheel drive, so it still may not want to turn… if not ground engaging, there could possibly be a steering unit issue, could be low on hydro fluid, hard to know for certain without being able to look at it.

how do i figure the weight max towing , i'm a big guy at 300 lbs do i have tto add my weight to what i'm towing so i will not go over the weight capacity @Josh's Green Garage
@JoshsGreenGarage
@JoshsGreenGarage Год назад
Well the 580 can pull a lot more than what Deere will say. There is no set number, but per Deere you should not pull more weight than the tractor weight, this includes you, and any ballast weights. The 580 is 686 lbs without deck, so if no additional weight, plus you, you could pull 986 lbs. keep in mind, the K72 transaxle weight limit on axle is 1,011 lbs. I can’t tell you the percentage of the machine that is on the rear axle, but safe to say 1/2, so assume with you, 643 lbs. that means whatever tongue weight you have, it can’t be more than 368 lbs. no matter how much you try to pull. Wheel weights add nothing to the axle, so they are like free additional pulling value. Stack 2 on each wheel, now you can tow 200 lbs more, but you can’t add anymore tongue weight. Hopefully this helps. Might be worth looking into an X730 at the least, you would probably be more comfortable on it.
