5th Gen 4Runner Raptor Light Install with Switch AND Relay

I wanted to install Raptor Lights on my 5th Gen 2020 4Runner. There are a lot of videos on RU-vid about how to install Raptor lights but I wasn’t able to find anyone who installed both a RELAY (required by the switch manufacturer) AND a dash mounted switch. I also wanted to run IGNITION power to the relay/switch so that I couldn’t accidentally leave the raptor lights on after the car was off. I ran up to my friend Stefan’s house for some help with the installation. He owns a company called THOR (thorav.us/). They manufacture LED Video walls and Stefan has a lot of electronics knowledge and experience so I asked him to help me with the install project and explain what was happening electronically in our lighting circuit.
This install is on a 5th Gen 4Runner but the concept is similar if you have a Tacoma, JEEP Wrangler, or any other vehicle that you are looking to install accessory lighting on. Our install cuts NO factory wires and is completely removable without any damage to the vehicle (aside from cutting a rubber grommet to fead wires into the cab). We chose to pull the power from the fuse panel in the dash. This COULD be pulled from the INJ fuse in the engine bay but on the 2020/21 4Runners, that fuse location isn’t ideal. Placing an Add-a-fuse in that location prevents closure of the fuse panel cover. We felt, running the main relay power into the cab and using the Ignition No. 2 fuse location would prevent exposing our fuses to the elements and would also make for a cleaner install (no cutting, trimming, or damaging any factory components).
Thanks for watching, liking, sharing and participating respectfully in the comments!

Excellent instructional video to install Raptor lights WITH a switch on basically any vehicle!! I just finish installing the lights on my 2023 4Runner TRD Off-Road, and it came out great.... Feel lucky to have found this video after watching countless other Raptor Lights installation videos.... This is the best one by far!!

Thanks for explaining the concept in detail. Most other videos out there just showing raptor light to turn on when thr vehicle is on, with no switch. This is the exact how to video I have been looking for. We need your professional friend making more video like this. There are many kids out there pretending to understand this stuff and making no good tutorials potentially even dangerous. Update: I was able to install raptor lights with oem switch and everything has been working as expected. I even used the same harness. There was quite a bit of soldering. But in the end it was all worth it.

Great video, I learned a lot which helped me install an OEM style dash switch, relay, and Raptor Lights in my 2015 4Runner Limited. I did take power from the engine bay fuse box, 10 amp INJ slot using Add A Fuse. Saw another video where Runnin4Tacos removed the nut from the bolt holding down the fuse box to slide up a little door allowing passage of the power wire up and through without cutting a little channel in the fuse box keeping it water tight. My only regret was using crimp style wire connectors which were a pain connecting different gauge wires. So far the lights work, but I may go back and solder them like you suggest. Still, the lights look great and it was a cool project!

Great Video!, but had a quick question. The main power source (12ga red wire) that goes through the relay to the lights. Is that red 12ga cable connected to the battery directly or going through the big fuse box Near the battery? For either application does it require a pig tall fuse as well and what size? I did not really see that covered in the video.

Helpful video and thanks for sharing. I have some question, If I'll install a BSM and wire a switch like this. Do I need to connect to a relay first? Or can I connect from fuse box to the switch directly?
@PictureTime
@PictureTime 3 года назад
Depends on the switch and also how much draw your lights pull. My switch recommended a relay. A relay will keep the power going through your switch low and will prevent burning the switch out.

Great video. The one thing I missed that you quickly mentioned was extending the relay battery power wire with a 12 gauge piece of wire. The wire on the kit is 16 gauge. Did I understand that correct or miss something.
@lfraseroo
@lfraseroo 2 года назад
Ok, I did miss something. I skimmed the intro a bit fast where you clearly state the kit is a 12 gauge kit. The link provided however is a 16 gauge and I missed that as well. To make matters worse, after testing that everything did in fact work from battery power, I proceeded to connect the rest inside the cab. After powering up the car, I only got half the light to the switch and no power to the raptor lights. Pulled everything inside apart and re-wired with temp connections and got the same result. Finally realized the connector that originally went to the included switch was wired incorrectly. The red and white wires were wired in reverse in the connector. After cutting all those and connecting it worked. I've got the 12 gauge kit coming. The 16 gauge had super tiny wires inside and just seemed a bit delicate. Is there a great solution to put the fuse cover back on with the Add-a-fuse? I'm probably going to pull out the Dremel unless there's a better solution.
@robertcasagrande7901
@robertcasagrande7901 3 года назад
As others have said, thank you for your simple, concise explanation. In your video, you're installing Raptor Lights and you plugged the add-a-fuse into IGN2. I'm installing a 20" LED light bar. Could I plug in my add-a-fuse to a Headlight Hi-Beam fuse, so that the light bar only comes on when the switch is turned on and when the hi-beams are on (if either of the two are off, the LED light bar would be off)? Also, you spliced both red wires together in your switch. Could I take the wire that lights up the words (on the switch), add a add-a-fuse, and insert it into the Dash Light Fuse (the words on the switch would light up when the dash lights are on)? Thanks again!
@PictureTime
@PictureTime 3 года назад
Yes. You could do that for sure. The high beam fuse is in the engine compartment fuse box. So you’ll want to go in there with your main power. Then your bat would only come on when your lights are on (THere is a separate fuse for high and low beams so you have to decide when you want the system powered). Then yes. You could run the other red switch wire to your dash lights fuse and it would light up with your dash lights.

So a few things…. 1st, why run a ground inside the cabin when there are plenty of ground points under the dash? Second, why not just add another “add a fuse’ and connect it to a power source that only comes on when you turn the lights on? Unless I missed it, why didn’t you connect the main power source at the battery to the relay, then use the power from under the dash to trigger the relay? It seems as you got both 12vdc power connections from under the dash. Finally why did you zip tie the excess wires from the harness rather than just cut to length? Other than those items it was a pretty good video. Thanks!

Trying to remember details… but the switch suggests a relay. I think a simple on off switch would be fine for this application. The led lights don’t draw much power. You’d want to have a relay for things with a larger draw. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for your question Tammy. I’m not familiar with the fuse panels on the 2019 but I think you might be able to tap into the fuse box on the engine bay for your main power. Hopefully someone who knows will chime in! Good luck with your project!

I think so but your fuse locations may differ slightly.

Why in the world would you need a relay to switch on 3 little LEDs that probably won't produce more than .5 amps? Yes relays are the way to go with most applications, such as light bars, on board air compressors, ditch lights, pretty much anything with more than 3amps to be on the safe side. But raptor LEDs will work just fine with a fused power wire and any rocker switch, even the cheap eBay rocker switches would be able to handle them. If I'm wrong, please correct me. Suddenly everyone wants to put a relay on every little thing they install, thats why they sell them by the dozens on Amazon and eBay. If you think im wrong, go look in your car's manual, and try to find the "relay" for your license plate lights lol 😂

Great point. You don’t need the relay. The instructions recommended it and we thought it might be helpful to learn about what they do and how to install one. But you don’t need a relay for these lights. I’m currently running them on my ‘21 with no relay.

@@PictureTimei apologize if i came out sounding disrespectful and rude, i take that back. Everyone should learn how to use a relay. Awesome instructional video on how to use a relay. Again, my apologies, hope you have a great Sunday 👍🏽
