Now I'd like to know why the mics on your video sound so much better than when I just heard them on 2 other videos. Maybe you turned up the gain so they were all equal? That would make sense. Something that initially sounds louder will psychologically sound better to most people and is "cheating". :) It sure is surprising the sound quality one can get for about $20 these days! This was a very valuable comparison.

Hey Curtis! What sort of compact 3.5mm microphones would you recommend for capturing live action sequences? My videos utilize a GoPro on my head, but I'm looking for something better. I'm using a Zoom H1 Recorder. (I need something that not only records my voice, but also extends and captures sound details of my surroundings). Lav mics I've used (JK, Sennheiser) seem to only capture what's close to me and have a steep sensitivity drop off at a distance. Thanks!

@curtisjudd 5 лет назад
Hey Dutch the Hooligan, what type of sound are you trying to capture and how far from you is the sound source?
@DutchTheHooligan

@@curtisjudd Thanks for the response! Any of the videos on my channel are a great demonstration of the application of the microphone. It's for outdoor "Airsoft" (like paintball) gameplay videos. I'm looking for something that would pick up all the details of the battles around me (my voice - which includes occasional shouting, footsteps, bbs hitting cover around me, as well as be able to reach into the distance to capture the dialogue of players that are sometimes up to 200 feet away). I know it's a tall ask, but I figured you'd be the guy to know.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 5 лет назад
Hi Dutch, I’m at a loss, to be honest. A lavalier will capture your voice and ambient sound close to you but will have mixed results at picking up people more than a few yards away. I’d probably NOT try to hid the mic like in movie sets but keep it mounted on the outside of the outermost clothing layer and conceal the cable as well as possible so it doesn’t catch on anything. Best of luck!
@DutchTheHooligan
@DutchTheHooligan 5 лет назад
Tried a lavalier, and had exactly the result you mentioned. It's not bad, but I'll continue to look for something that reaches out a bit further. Thanks for your time & quick responses Curtis!

I use 2 of these (on Curtis' recommendation!). The Rode Smartlav+. I love it. You can hear it on my most recent videos from June 2017 forward anytime I'm talking to the camera. I used the Apurture A.Lav on my earliest videos. They both sound great with low noise (i.e., mic hiss). For my voice, I like the sound quality and natural eq just a tiny bit more on the Rode. Both are great and I always appreciate learning from Curtis!

Hi Kaya, thanks! The trick is that there aren’t any recorders I know of with more than one 3.5mm input. Those with multiple inputs usually have XLR inputs. There are some camera audio adapters with two 3.5mm inputs if that would work for you? Here’s a comparison I did some time back on three of them: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B_0od_f_QkQ.html

Just a catch-up: Bought the Aputure A.lav (not EZ) on your recommendation. LOVE IT! Thanks. HOWEVER, I found that in situations where I can don't need the plug-in power adapter (Tascam DR-60D Mk II, Sony A7II), I'm actually better off without the adapter. Opposite to your findings, I get both a better, cleaner signal and less noise without the adapter. FORTUNATELY, the "full" A.Lav cost me just about 5 or 6€ more than the EZ version. So for the extra money, I get some comfort features (headphone jack, use as a high quality headset, use in situations with plug-in power, adapter cables, case), and am still totally satisfied with the "pure" mic. Still wondering whether the EZ version (the pure mic) may be a) different from the one I bought, and b) may even have better characteristics with plug-in-power devices, but for now, I'm happy with the way it is. THANKS for your videos!

Not necessarily. Most of the microphones need plugin power if they don’t have their own battery and audio interfaces generally don’t have that feature. A mic with an XLR connector would be an option: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bhA-WGdn1ZI.html

Hey Curtis! I've been away from all this for a while but have been catching up on all your videos: great to see you're continuing to create consistently great content. This vid in particular is incredibly timely for me as I think I may have to purchase a cheap lavalier asap, although I haven't yet been able to establish if my current phone, the HTC One (M7 variant) is capable of recording from an external mic (the manual I have isn't very detailed). In any case, I have a quick question about the Aputure A.Lav: is the battery pack is just for situations where the mic wouldn't receive power or is it part of that model's design? Seems like it's the one to go for in this bunch and it's a bit cheaper than the Rode SmartLav too!
@LearnLightAndSoundSessions
@LearnLightAndSoundSessions 7 лет назад
Hello TheNorliss! The battery pack is part of the design for optimal performance and from my tests, it sounds quite good for its $35 price tag. I was able to get the mic to work directly into my phone but it didn't sound nearly as good and there was a fair bit more noise in the recorded sound. So while you can use it with phones which supply plugin power (most do), it doesn't sound as nice. Good luck!

hey, curtis, great video as always. I use your video as a reference most of the time. So glad you cover the sony ecm-cs3. I recently bought a Tascam DR-2D and itching to use a lavalier on it for interview purpose. I like to have a shorter length lavalier. Right now i am confused about which one to choose between smartlav+ or the sony ecm-cs3, they both sound good in your video. Spec wise it's clear that the rode is superior, but in your test, which one has less noise floor? and which one is the clearest sounding for vocal? I'd like to save money, but is the Rode Smartlav+ worth it for the long term? I recently bought a Tascam DR-2D and itching to use a lavalier on it for interview purpose.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 лет назад
+Eric Fernando the biggest difference is build quality. The Sony is cheaply built with plastic whereas the RODE is far more durable metal with a Kevlar reinforced cable. If you want something that'll last, I thing the RODE will likely hold up longer. But if budget is the primary concern, go with the Sony.

I like how simple and no-bs your videos are. I just bought the RODE Videomic Pro and for the price ($282.49 CAD with a $50 reduction) I am not impressed enough to keep it. I found it horrible in wind outdoors, which is why I think a lavelier would better suit my needs. I really want to get an $800 wireless Sennheiser lavelier but I think that is a bit out of my budget at this point in the game. Thanks.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 5 лет назад
Thanks Lucas. With the VMP and any shotgun microphone, they only work well if you've got wind protection when using them outside (foam isn't enough), and you get them off the camera and boomed over the person talking. So I agree, one of these lavalier mics would probably be a better choice. They'll still need wind protection, but you can get them closer. What used to be the Aputure A.Lav has been improved and is now the Deity V.Lav. I recommend that. Deity V.Lav at Amazon: geni.us/PtPd2nT

Hi Curtis, Ah, good move! I think one of the biggest improvements a lot of otherwise very good video makers could make is to use lavaliers, rather than the on board microphones. Much clearer and cuts out so much of the distracting background noise. A great kindness to older people like me who have trouble seperating speech from noise, something some commentators sadly do not seem to understand. Bob.

Hi Claire! The trick with these is that you need a way to listen to the other callers as well. You could use your MacBook's speakers, but that'll bleed back into the lavalier microphone. I'd probably go with earbuds which includes a microphone closer to you which will sound better. There are also a ton of USB microphones if you want to go down that path.

The Rode smartlav+ requires phantom power so, even with the SC3 TRRS to TRS adapter, it will not work on a number of DSLR cameras including the Canon 70D, 80D, etc. Same issue with using the smartlav/SC3 combo for a PC mic port. A Rode tech support rep suggested the SC6 ($20) adapter (plus SC3) can enable recording on a PC mic port, but he didn't offer an option for DSLRs lacking phantom power. One post suggested using the IK Multimedia iRig Pre Microphone Interface to solve the phantom power issue, but at $40 for that device plus $20 for the SC6 is time to think about using a Zoom H1n, F1 or H4n Pro or other competing device as the lav interface, albeit adding more bulk to the overall setup but delivering a more robust set of features for the lav and many other general recording capabilities?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 лет назад
Hi Joel, slight correction and clarification: The smartLav+, like most lavalier microphones, requires plugin or bias power (3-5V) which is different than phantom power (which varies from 12 to 48V). The Canon 70 and 80D will supply plugin power and should work with the correct adapter (SC3). Most late model computers have a headset port which will support TRRS inputs so the smartLav+ will work natively in those cases. Need to confirm with your particular computer. If it has a TRRS port, it will usually be marked with a headset (earphones with mic).

Good afternoon, Today I received my Sony ECM-CS3 microphone and the Rode adapter, and I have tried to record with the iPhone recorder and with the ShurePlus Motiv but both record a 1 channel sound when the microphone has 2 channels (R and L) Do you know any applications that record in stereo? Thank you!
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 лет назад
Hi! Unfortunately, the 3.5mm inputs on smartphones only take mono input. To get stereo recording on smartphones, it only works with devices which have USB or Apple Lightning connectors and support stereo recording. With those devices, both RODERec and ShurePlus Motiv support stereo recording.
@AppleTube

I'm using the iPhone 8 Plus with the Rode SC4 and the connector to lightning but none of the programs does ... Have you managed to record in stereo with this combination of micro Sony, Rode SC4, jack-lightning connector and iPhone 7 / 8 ...? It's very strange 😥
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 лет назад
No, the lightning to 3.5mm adapter is also only mono, unfortunately. The only mics that can do stereo recording connect directly to the lightning port (not with the 3.5 to lightning adapter). Here are a few examples: Zoom iQ7: amzn.to/2ij07pB RODE iXY: amzn.to/2ikjsqD Shure MV88: bhpho.to/2ijGtK9 We reviewed the MV88 here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZgTrdlvrn7s.html

Hi Curtis. Thank you for your videos. They are immensely helpful to us. =) We just purchased two Azden Pro-XD’s and were considering using them with the two Giant Squid Lav’s we already own (instead of the lav mics the Pro-XD comes with) via the TRS-TRRS adapter the Pro-XD comes with. We’ll be recording into the Zoom F8 via the Rode VXLR. Would this be a good/comparable option to purchasing any of the TRRS lav’s you've reviewed here? Is there any difference between the TRS-TRRS adapter that comes with the Pro-XD and the Rode SC4? Thank you again. Samuel Varghese

Hi Dihelson, I find that the A.Lav actually sounded quite a bit better on most voices than the Sennheiser ME2.
@DihelsonMendonca
@DihelsonMendonca 5 лет назад
Hi, Curtis, glad to hear that. I live in Brazil, and the "local" industry doesn´t offer many good lavalier mics, and purchasing foreing equipment is expensive. Currency here is almost 5:1 U$ dollars, so, anything like Sennheiser, Tascam, Canon, is like paying 5 times more expensive than the real price. Imagine you pay 2.000 dollars for a Shure VP-83 shotgun mic. Kind of that. I just dream about the products you review. So, although I prefer the best ones, sometimes, expensive equipment, many times I can´t afford them, and if there´s a budget good lavalier mic out there, it interests me. I´ll try to find this Aputure A.lav mic. Thanks, and keep up this great work.

Good video! Thank-you! I picked up the Sony ECM-CS3, in a large part because it uses an old 3 conductor plug, suitable for recorders which are NOT smartphones. -You can't plug those common 4 conductor plugs into a Zoom recorder, for instance. So out of the bunch, (except the one with all the complicated converter options), Sony's lav offers a high quality recording and is the only affordable clip on mic you can use with pro-level gear. Sony also makes affordable and very well built dedicated dictation recorders with high-quality compression. (The ICD PX series). I picked up one of those for $50; it's tough, runs forever on a couple of AAA batteries, has a built-in USB connector so you don't need a cable, and you get pro-level audio quality. Nothing like reliable, dedicated devices! Just drop it in your pocket, clip on the mic and away you go!

They both sound about like a $60 lavalier. The first one sounds like it was placed on the person speaking so that it picked up a bit more bass. On the second, it sounds like no effort was made to optimize the sound (which is good for a review). Overall not bad from my point of view.

Hi Curtis, what would you recommend for higher quality audio for a lav (via XLR) that feeds into my Zoom H5 which I use as a preamp to my DSLR? Or would you advise using a 3.5mm to XLR converter for a number of available lavs? Audio quality is really important to me. Thanks, Scott
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 5 лет назад
Hi Scott, the best sounding XLR based lavalier mic I’ve used is the Audio Technica AT899: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C4spfSMe78Q.html I haven’t adapted many 3.5mm to XLR but if you go that route, you’ll need a special adapter that also converts phantom power to plugin power (48V to 3-5V) so that you don’t damage the microphones. RODE makes the VXLR+ which does this.

The A.Lav comes with the right cable so no adapter is needed. It is designed for use with the battery pack which I believe feeds a different voltage than the H1 so I believe you'll need to plan to use the battery pack. It is another piece of kit and one that must be recharged periodically. So it isn't as convenient as others without battery packs. I'd say that's up to you. If you go with the A.Lav EZ and the H1, you'll just need this adapter: amzn.to/2wifLbm Good luck!

Hi Bastian, the RODE VXLR will work with a wireless receiver - I've used it with RODELink and Azden wireless systems. Hi amanieux, you could do that though because both capsules are omni-directional, the downward facing capsule would probably only be maybe 1 dB lower. thanks a lot curtis, i really appreciate your overview. I live in china and ordered an edutige 006 from america via ebay, but upon delivery the mic had a short in it, so i was kinda up the creek. Another friend told me to get the rode smartlav or the aputure a.lav. ... I think after watching this video I'm leaning towards the aputure a.lav. currently my wife is going crazy about the amount of money i'm spending on a 'hobby'... i think the a.lav. might be a place where we can meet in the middle. I'm shooting with the g7x and a yi action 4k with a zoom h1. I do a lot of motorcycle riding and vlogging while on ebike, so that added furry wind screen might be really helpful. Too bad it can't be used directly into the recorder but needs that powered preamp thingy. would love to see a video from you about syncing audio from multiple sources. cheers. I think its great that your daughter and you can have fun together doing this, I hope one day mine will too.

Hi kaspetto, haha! Yes, be careful not to annoy your wife with too many hobby purchases. :) I do have an older video on syncing that may be helpful: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dkTYpP6eec0.html There is also the A.lav EZ which doesn't have the power module which may make things easier for you. Good luck!

I haven't tried that one yet. I try to do a "cheap lav" update about once a year so I'll try to add that one next year.

Can these microphones be used with a wireless lavalier Sennheiser microphone system?

Those with TRS connectors can. We identify them in the video as compatible with audio recorders and cameras.
