August 29/2021 Summer Hike
Today we are in Banff National Park, at Lake Louise and we will be hiking The Plain of Six Glaciers Trail. The trail 14.6 kilometers out and back, with an elevation gain of 588 meters.
In order to get to this trail, you have to park at Lake Louise. This parking lot can fill up very fast, so it is best to get there early. Shuttles are also available from various locations to bring you to the lake. The hike starts off walking the length of Lake Louise, about 2 kilometers, on a wide path. A lot of people hike the lake so be prepared to see lots of people. At the end of the lake, you will lose a lot of the people. Around 3.5 kilometers the trail will narrow, and you will start you elevation gain. Soon things will start to open up, and you will have spectacular views in all directions. Around 5k you will see all the moraines on your left, and the beautiful glaciers in front of you. Around 5.5k you will reach a ledge section where the trail gets really narrow, with a big drop on your left side. Take this section slow and you will have not problems. You will then hit the switchback section which will take you up to the teahouse. At 6.7k you will reach the teahouse. If you want to buy anything in the teahouse, bring cash. A lot of people stop here. It’s about another 1.4k to the lookout. The trail is not maintained beyond this point and be prepared for some more elevation gain. Now you will see glaciers to you left in front of you, and below you. You will also get a beautiful view as you look back of Lake Louise. We stopped at 8k, as we found a nice spot to have lunch, the trail does go a little bit further to the lookout. I would rate this trail moderate.
The name Plain of Six Glaciers comes from the hanging glaciers of Mount Aberdeen, Lefroy, and Victoria, as well as the Lower Victoria and Lefroy glaciers and the hanging glacier on Popes Peak.

Another great video! I thought your hike would be more crowded - what time did you start? We plan to do this hike plus Big Beehive on August 11, 2023. We're staying at lodging that is walking distance from Lake Louise (not the Fairmont - I wish, haha!) so plan to watch the sunrise around 6am then start hiking. Best thing about the summer is long days for long day hikes.

I tried my best to keep the people out of the shots🤣🤣🤣 in this video our out and back distance was 16k, our moving time was 5.5 hours and our total time was 8 hours. Our elevation gain was 587 meters. All Trails says the loop you are going to do is 18.19k with 1017 meters in elevation gain. So plan on around 20k, All Trails always lies. I would probably say for your hike plan between 8 and 10 hours. You have a lot more elevation gain. We took it pretty slow, as I was filming and my sister had knee problems. All I can say is make sure you have lots of space on your memory card for pictures and or video. Because you are going to be blown away by the views😁😁😁 From Lake Louise to take Agnes, plan on having more people on the trail. I just hiked up to the Little Beehive last Saturday. We started at 7am and the trail going up to Lake Agnes was crazy busy with people😢😢😢 You will have an awesome adventure.

I did this hike with my wife last week when we were in Banff. Absolutely incredible experience as you pointed out that short walk along the side of the cliff was a little daunting, but we got through it totally worth it at the end.

How is the parking? Was it easily available

@paneshkumar9521 The parking is not good right now. We were there at 7am on Tuesday of this week and it was full. Everyone was getting turned away. I recommend booking a shuttle. Probably busier now due to the Jasper situation.

The ending of this trail definitely gets pretty intense with the wind that can often be found there. Such astounding views though!

I agree with you there, once I hiked it and I had crazy cold winds coming off those glaciers. Thanks for watching and commenting😁

Thanks for another great video. What hike would you recommend if I have time for 1 hike from Lake Louis area. Thanks in advance

That's a tough question. One I really enjoyed last year was Saddleback Mountain. A lot less people. I did it in late Sept and the Larch Trees had turned golden, just magnificent. You can do 3 different hikes if you choose. You can just hike up to Saddleback Pass. And of you are more adventurous you can go left from the pass up to Saddle mountain, which has a little bit of scrambling, or you can go right from the pass and summit Fairview Mountain, which would be the hardest of the three. My overall favorite though would be hiking up to Devil's Thumb via Lake Agnes. This one also has a little bit of scrambling. Hope this helps. Thank you for watching and commenting😁

I am thinking to do the beehive and plain of six glaciers on 2 separate days. After diving deeper on the trail map, would you recommend that I combine both in one day since getting to Lake Louise is challenging in July
@LIVEONALBERTA
@LIVEONALBERTA Год назад
If you combine big behive and plain of 6 glaciers you are looking over 20k and over 1000 meters in elevation. I know some people do it, but it would be a long day. I couldn't do it.

Such a beautiful hike! Your video made me plan out for when i go this year in late july as my first trip to Canada. Do you have any tips i should know before going like how long it took you? Things I need to be aware of or take to have a safe and prepared hike?

Out total time was 7.5 hours, our moving time was 5.5 hours. I go slow as I am always taking video😁 if you go during the week try to be at the lake Louise parking lot before 8am, on weekends 7am. Bear spray is a must to have. Also bring layer clothing, I have done this hike when it was nice at Lake Louise and snowing and raining up at the glaciers. It you want to stop at the tea hut, bring cash. Make sure you go right to the end for the greatest views. I am planning on doing this hike every year now.

@@LIVEONALBERTA Thank you so much! Will follow your tips! I think my main fear is hiking solo even with bear spray but i'll be doing my wildlife safety research and just be close by other hikers if possible as well.
