About This Series
Formerly known as 'No Milk Today', this channel is dedicated to a total food self-sufficiency project. Max aims to spend a year from September 2022 to September 2023 only eating and drinking food produced on his small farm in the South West of England - and only allowing himself two imports - salt and tap water.
This series was adapted for BBC Radio 4, ‘Growing Solo’, available from April 22nd 2024

Produced by Tessa Browne

Max you have done an incredible job of overcoming the challenges that have arisen these past 6 months. Besides a huge thanks for undertaking this project and sharing it with us, I want to thank you for pointing up the necessity of educating ourselves in advance, and having multiple options for remaining self sufficient throughout the seasons.

Thanks. sorry to be late in replying. I am eating a lot of leeks. And Cheese at the moment. Leeks broiled in stock with a bit of honey and some salt are great but am SO looking forward to a bit of asparagus. !

@@MaxGrowingSolo Do you ever freeze the leeks as that's what l do when they are near to bolting and that way l can clear the ground and still use them.

@MaxGrowingSolo

Yup. only 4 months to go. The home straight will be after I’ve got the new season potatoes in June. Before then it’s a lot of leeks and a lot of greens! Thanks for taking the time and sorry it’s taken me so long to reply. Max

Great video Max - I often get asked when I do talks about complete self sufficiency and I have to admit I grow very few staples. It really is where it's at. Easy to store carbohydrates, Glad your health is good from all the meat, I'm sure you get plenty of exercise from all the gardening and smallholding work, keeps you active.
@MaxGrowingSolo

I have stopped wondering why I haven’t lost any weight and started thinking that it might be because I am actually doing ok with this self sufficiency lark. But you of all people Probs know that family life is one of the things that stops the growing folk in their tracks. Ha! And in my case a weakness for iPlayer dramas rather than digging in the rain. All the best and sorry for the late reply. There is a reason, but I can’t tell you what it is quite yet. Max

Radishes are quite tasty cooked in stews- a little like turnips. And they are quick! If you grate them with a little salt in a few minutes they have no more bite and are quite delicious. I could eat a whole dish of them as a salad!Well, y ou probably know this already.....
@MaxGrowingSolo

I still don’t have any roots. don’t think I’m organised enough. Polytunnel carrots have germinated but they are a way off yet. The game changer will be the first new potatoes in June. All the best Max

I’ve loved watching this so far. I do wonder though if this highlights the importance of trading, if you’ve got abundance of something someone needs and lack something yourself that they have, then trading surely means that communities are more likely to survive.
@MaxGrowingSolo
@MaxGrowingSolo Год назад
Sorry for the late reply Jonny. You are absolutely right. Trading would make all the difference and when I’m done in September I am going to join forces with some other local farmers to start a cashless bartering scheme. Thanks for taking the time. Max

You're very fortunate to have the supply of meat because it will keep you alive for another 6 months but take it away and add lactose intolerance to the mix and I wonder what your choices would be.The hungry gap is what it is and without the staples safely stored away, we would be in trouble. Glad to see you posting again. Take care.

Congratulations on getting this far! It is my experience too that a low carbohydrate diet has reduced my cholesterol not increased it. I wish I could own a cow, or even a goat.. You have inspired me to start making my own cheese.

Wonderful effort! Have you added pea shoots into your diet, along with your sprouts?
@MaxGrowingSolo
@MaxGrowingSolo Год назад
I am worried about stopping the peas by taking shoots but do grow sprouting seeds.
@SusanNM
@SusanNM Год назад
@@MaxGrowingSolo Oh yes, you would be growing pea shoots for the garden separately from the pea shoots for eating during your hungry gap.

I enjoyed seeing your take on the last 6 months. I agree that staples are the important thing. I can only grow potatoes so far. I have started to look into grains. But, I am not sure yet about that. I fear the deer would just eat it all anyways.

I am putting up a three line electric fence to try and stop the badgers from getting in this year with a strimable strip round the edges. Good luck for the following season. Follow the plough. Max

This is how people are supposed to live.. Big pharmaceutical companies, and supermarket chains are slowly depriving us of what being human really is. Get your hands back in the soil and come back to life.
